What Makes The Ideal Kitchen?

A kitchen is the heart of every home, its design therefore calls for detailed planning and imagination to ensure it beats to the tune of your everyday needs. Depending on your budget and space, there are various options open to you today. Modular kitchens are the most modern and functional, and integrate various modules to give your space a fresh and pleasing design. Before any kitchen project can begin, you have to assess what you want, what you can actually have, and what would work best for you.

Here are a few key factors that go into designing the perfect kitchen:

Shape:

Straight Kitchens.

Basic Layouting: A precise measurement of length, breadth and height of the kitchen is essential to

find the right modular design that perfectly fits the available space.

Carcass: Consider the storage space you need and accordingly plan for cabinets and drawers to be

incorporated in the design.

Shutters: Timber Veneer, Metallic Polyurethane, Mild Steel etc. are used for Modular Kitchens.

But steel is the obvious choice for its long life, ease of maintenance and toughness.

Appliances: Consider the kitchen appliances that you possess and new ones that you need, and

There are five main types of kitchen shapes - Parallel, Island, L Shaped, U Shaped and

Kitchen Space

There are five main types of kitchen shapes: the Parallel, Island, L shaped, U shaped and Straight kitchens. The shape of your kitchen will be decided by various factors like how big or small your space is. By what kind of cooking you indulge in. Whether you have a small or large family. Your budget. Your lifestyle or frequency of usage, etc.

U - Shaped Kitchen

The U-shape kitchen design has become a popular choice for kitchen layouts. It is most commonly suited to larger kitchen spaces. It is a perfect layout for families who spend a great deal of time in the kitchen. The U-shape kitchen design also offers maximum cabinet and bench top space

L-Shaped Kitchen

This shape uses two walls of the kitchen for the three points of the work triangle. Often, the fridge is at one end of the long leg of the "L," the sink is toward the center of the same wall, and the stove is perpendicular, on the short leg of the "L." In contrast to the U-shape kitchen, the "L" has a long, rather than a short, wall facing into the rest of the room. Room traffic does not cross into the triangle, and, since this design uses only two walls, the triangle is long and relatively narrow, allowing for a more open layout. This setup is well-suited to a large room where the kitchen shares space with a family room. Additional counterspace may further lengthen one leg of the "L."

Island Kitchen

In Island kitchens, the island is the central focus and organizing principle. Sometimes one side of the island is for working and the other side is for casual dining. A kitchen island can be a cheap and attractive way to expand your counter space. An island can also help you add a second sink, dishwasher, or oven to your kitchen. Today, a homeowner has the option of islands made of the same materials as the base cabinets and countertop for an integral look. On the other hand, the latest trend is leaning back toward a freestanding look, with upper cabinets, base cabinets, and countertop materials in a mix of materials and colors.

This arrangement is usually used for very long rooms because it takes advantage of both the main walls. The parallel kitchen offers the advantage of being able to place all the connections of the equipment on just one wall. To avoid the inconvenience of dividing up the work areas into two parts and making unnatural movements to pass from one area to the other, it is preferable to place the work area on one wall (sink, oven, and worktop) and to use the opposite wall for storage.

Straight Kitchen

The kitchens are designed keeping in mind the available space and requirements of the clients. These are the ideal kind of basic kitchens for comparatively less space. Generally these are suitable for narrow spaces and small houses / flats. These are called so as it lines up straight against one wall without an island or breakfast counter. Often integrated into extensions and older properties, the 'straight' design can offer a stunning look when incorporating tall wall cabinets and the right splashbacks. furniture that holds inlays .

�Essentially refers to the basic structure of the boxes which go to frame the upper and

lower units.

Basic Layouting

Measure the kitchen and layout on a grid paper

Now specifically mark the following on the layout

�Entrance, Ventilation, Water Inlet

�Measure from the floor to the ceiling, the distance betweenwalls. and from the corners to the doors. Also, make a record ofanything that projects into the room such as radiators, pipes, ventilation, special angles and any other majorarchitectural features.

�Measure the size of doors and windows, as well as the heightand distance of each from the floor, ceiling and edges. It is agood idea to mark onto your drawing the space that doors andwindows need to swing open. If you are planning to have acabinet under the window, remember that the minimumdistance between the window frame and the floor should be atleast 90 cm, and preferably 105 cm.

�So you�ve measured the big stuff. Now it�s time to look at thedetails. Note the location of existing electrical sockets,switches, water and gas connections. Remember that thesecan be moved to suit your new kitchen. Mark down theapproximate position of where you would like these newoutlets, switches and connections to be placed.

General Issues with Layouts:

� Demarcate work platform (kitchen slab ) and mark its height. Incase the height is <=800 mm please check whether ornot the customer is willing to modify the same.

�Specifically check for skirting on floor, in case the same is there, the consumer should be willing to make amendments remove skirting altogether.

�Often enough budgets do not match the requirements of consumers. Therein we suggest, only in specific cases,framing under the sink and hob units. But in case of sink units, it has to either have wall or a box supporting on either side.

�Generally a unit code number is 4 digits.

�The first alphabet being L implying Lower, U implying upper unit . In case oflower & upper corner unit its LC & UC resp.

�Any unit suffixed by � WU � is a sink unit .

�Any unit suffixed with CA is a corner carousel unit.

�All units with T prefix are tall units.

�The first two numbers on the unit code implies the size of the unit in feet.

�The last digit represents the no of shutters, ranging from 1-4 only.

�Incase the unit includes an accessory it shall be ending with an alphabet.

Thumb Rules for Working Around the Triangle

�No leg of the triangle should be less than 4 feet (1.2m) or more than 9 feet (2.7m).

�The sum of all three sides of the triangle should be between 13 feet (4.0m) and 26 feet (7.9m).

�Cabinets or other obstacles should not intersect any leg of the triangle by more than 12 inches (30cm).

�If possible, there should be no major traffic flow through the triangle.

�A full-height obstacle, such as a tall cabinet, should not come between any two points of the triangle.

�Cooking hob unit should be across to the ventilation.

�The sink unit should be placed in the wet area as per the work triangle rules.

�Corner units at blind ends have to be decided.

� Top units and lower units should preferably be symmetrical in size.

�Hob unit is topped by a cooker hood in most cases so area has to be left blank. The area betweenchimney & hob / cook top should be 2½ feet at least.

Basics While Placing Your Key Units

Layout Planning

80 cm

A minimum gap of 80 cm is recommended for ideal operations between sink and the hob/ cook top unit for smooth operations.

This prevents the water splattering over the food being cooked and flame while using both setups simultaneously.

120 cm

In parallel or U shaped kitchen, for smooth movement and ease of operations, it is advised that the difference between both parallel walls be a minimum of 120 cms or more

Do not have pull out drawers installed next to the under hob microwave or cooking range as it will hinder operations of both and hence its not advised.

Cooking range and gas ovens under hobs should not have cabinet doors opening towards it drawers on both sides as it would interrupt access and may result in accidents and breakage.

Cooking range & ovens under hob should not be installed adjacent to a wall or at the dead as it would hinder the smooth operations of the cooking unit.

�What are post form shutters ? Using the latest lamination technology, we can now laminate flexible mica on the durable 18mm water-proof MDF boards or 18mm MR Plywood. The advantage of the post-forming technology is to avoid sharp edges and thereby give the shutters avery sleek and stylish look.

�What are membrane shutters ? PVC Membrane skins are imported foil sheets laminated on the 18mm water-proof MDF boards or 18mm MR Plywood. The finishing is trendy and modern. You can opt for a carving or grooving on the Shutters.
