HEY KI!
Are you interested in being involved in KISS next year? Do you know someone you think would do a great job as part of our executive? If so, go check out the KI website and check out the descriptions of the various positions. If you think you know someone that would do a good job in one of the positions, nominate them by emailing their name and the position to me at [email protected] . That’s right guys, this is a call for nominations for next years exec! We are very excited to get as many people as we can involved, and we need lots of nomina-tions! So please nominate! Happy home stretch of the term!

Description:
All participants in the world econom
y are lined up behind a single policy priority, nam
ely, the pursuit of economic grow
th. Th
e growth m
odel has served national and international interests very w
ell for more than 200 years, but econom
ic expansion is now
problematic. Planetary constraints are being
encountered and, by consuming m
assive quantities of fossil fuel, econom
ic growth drives clim
ate change. A new m
odel – the steady-state econom
y (SSE) – is proposed to resolve these problem
s. Transitioning from one m
odel to the other presents form
idable socio-economic and political challenges. Th
is sem
inar will introduce the concept of the steady-state w
orld econom
y and shed some light on transitional issues.

Description:
In the last 50 years, a concern for systems in general as articulated
from the top dow
n has evolved into thinking of systems from
the bottom
up. Systems for long conceived is as static structures w
ith a w
ell defined dynamics are now
largely seen as being far from
equilibrium, chaotically dynam
ic and not longer explicable in terms
of classical physical and socio-economic theory. In this talk, I w
ill explain how
these ideas are beginning to permeate out thinking about
cities, illustrating the path to complexity theory in term
s of how
cities emerge from
the bottom up. I w
ill illustrate these ideas using a variety of exam
ples, from fractal patterns, from
ideas about size and scaling, in term
s of new sorts of m
odels based on automata and
agents, pulling this all together in suggesting how this new
thinking is beginning to change the w
ay we think about urban futures and
ways w
e might design and invent them
in more appropriate w
ays than in the past.
