WEEK 8 TERM 1, 2020
Principal’s Message Dear Parents/Caregivers,
At present there are a number of challenges presenting globally and nationally in reagrds to COVID-19. I want to take this opportunity to reassure our KPS families that we are strictly following advice from the Department of Education who is working very closely with the Department of Health and we will continue to keep you updated as information comes to hand.
The decision has been made that from Monday 16 March schools can no longer hold assemblies, excursions, camps, local and inter-school sport, nor ‘non-essential’ gatherings of 500 people or more. This will no doubt have an impact on aspects of our day-to-day operations, however we are determined to keep the impact as minimal as possible as we aim to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students, your children.
Harmony Day activities and the canteen meal deal will go ahead as planned. Students will complete the activities in classes as opposed to Peer Support groups.
Community based events such as Easter Hat parade, Grandparents Day, ANZAC Day assembly and P&C meetings will not take place.
PSSA is cancelled until further notice.
Parent Teacher Interviews remain as planned, if we need to reschedule these visits for a later date, we will do so.
The school canteen volunteers are practicing the hygiene measures as directed. Gloves are being worn as per usual, and face masks are now being worn for the food preparation. Online orders are accepted, however there will be no over the counter sales.
Students are to place bags at their classroom in the morning as opposed to gathering for a morning assembly. We also ask for parents to assist by leaving the playground as soon as possible after dropping students off.
If your child has a cough, sore throat, respiratory illness, fever, heavy cold or flu-like symptoms they shoud not attend school. Parents or family members with these symptoms should also stay away from school as well.
I want to thank you for your continued support and cooperation in this unprecented time. Rest assured that student, staff and community welfare remain at the forefront of our decision making.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs Melissa Oostdam

EARLY STAGE 1 REPORT We have been very busy learning how to write the letters of the alphabet and the sounds that they make. We
already know the letters a, m, s, t, I and f! We are also learning sight words that help us to read more fluently.
Please practice sight words at home with your child and bring sight word books to school every Friday.
Last week we took home our first home readers to practice the wonderful reading skills we have been learning
at school. We encourage you to read with your child every day for 10 minutes and bring readers to school every
time your child is ready to exchange it for a new book.
We have been reiterating how important it is to regularly wash our hands for 20 seconds with soap throughout
the day to help prevent germs spreading. We can also cough or sneeze into our elbows instead of our hands.
Due to recent events and under Department of Education advice, we will not book our Early Stage One
excursion until further notice.
Please ensure you have connected with your class via the Seesaw app. If you need a copy of the QR code to
connect to Seesaw ,please speak with your child’s class teacher.

STAGE 1 REPORT Stage 1 have settled well into their new classes with their classmates and teachers, and we are well
underway with our learning.
In light of what is happening around the world, we have been focusing on good hygiene and how
to wash our hands. We have been making it a habit to wash our hands before and after eating.
We have been learning about place value in mathematics and working with larger numbers. We
have also been doing addition and subtraction bridging to ten. In mathematics, the students have
been exploring and investigating 2D shapes and their properties.
We have begun our technology lessons with Mr Mahoney every second week. The lessons are
continued throughout the two weeks incorporating the new knowledge acquired. Students will be
learning how to use various software programs and tools.
Over the term the students have been learning how to construct a narrative, using correct sentence
structure and the structure of a narrative.

STAGE 2 REPORT
It has been an exciting two weeks for the Stage Two children as they competed in our annual swimming
carnival. There were many stellar performances on what was a very hot day. A special thanks to all the
parents and carers who helped out on the day, it was very much appreciated. A few elite Kirrawee students
were selected to represent out school at the Zone Carnival just a few days later and competed admirably.
One outstanding child has been selected to compete in the Regional carnival which is absolutely incredible!
Over the last two weeks, Mrs Oostdam has been visiting classes and working with teachers in order to boost
our writing programs. This will continue throughout the term and aims to equip children with skills and strategies

needed to write quality coherent texts in a short time.
Home learning in children’s books has been completed quite well on a whole but children engaging in online
activities hasn’t seen as much involvement. Just a reminder that Matific, Type Club and Literacy Planet are
fantastic programs aimed to help children revise, improve and extend on what they learn in class. Children have enjoyed creating some amazing artworks based on the Cubism work of Picasso.
Thank you again for your continued support and cooperation. Stage Two Teachers, Mrs Amy Fulmer, Ms Amanda Tucci, Mr Neal Culkin, Mrs Shannon Newman & Mr Patrick Morgan
STAGE 3 REPORT
It has been a busy few weeks in Stage three with our learning programs driving deep learning experiences for
all students.
Our English unit of learning focuses on Identity and has provided many opportunities for the students and
teachers to engage in activities which explore who they are and what they stand for. This has assisted us all to
get to know each other deeply over the course of the last few weeks, certainly a helpful and rewarding as we
all find our place within the classroom and our peers. We look forward to more insights into student lives
through reading the students autobiographies due in week 10.
Stage 3 have recently been accepted into a Pen Pal group where we have been matched up with classes in
the Northern Territory and Western Australia. Students will soon begin writing letters to their paired student,
along with emails and skype sessions. We look forward to this being a rewarding and educative experience
for all.
In week 8, as a whole school, KPS will celebrate Harmony Day. Students in their peer support groups will visit
each classroom throughout the morning and learn about different countries around the world. Some
countries we are focusing on this year include...Italy, France, Cambodia, Netherlands, USA and Spain.
During week 10, parents are invited to meet with their child’s teacher for term one parent teacher interviews.
We look forward to productive and child-centred discussions where strong partnerships can be formed to

NOW WELCOMING BOTH GIRLS AND BOYS Since its inception in 1934, the Australian Air League has provided opportunities in aviation to boys and girls across Australia. Sadly, however, a girls squadron has never been founded in the Sutherland Shire. Until now! We are pleased to announce that from 2020, Sutherland Shire Squadron will be opening our doors to both boys and girls, meaning that the young ladies of the Sutherland Shire will now have access to the same opportunities in aviation as the young men. We are currently accepting submissions of interest from female cadets 8 years and older looking to join the Australian Air League Sutherland Shire Squadron or simply find out more about what is involved and the opportunities available. To register your interest, please send an email with your details to:
