Kirklees Concert Season2016/17
Box Office 01484 225 755kirkleestownhalls.co.uk
WelcomeWe are delighted to announce details of the 2016/17 Kirklees Concert Season; the fourteenth year of the unique partnership between Kirklees Council and Opera North. It is a fitting testament, that in a region so steeped in history and cultural heritage, we can continue to bring world class music to the Town Halls of Kirklees and although there is a change of emphasis this year in Dewsbury, the commitment to keep music ‘live and local’ is as strong today as when the partnership began.
In the dawn of a new era, Opera North’s new Music Director, Aleksandar Markovic, features throughout the season with two inspiring symphonic programmes and the ever popular Viennese Whirl, cementing the importance of this season to Yorkshire’s own symphony orchestra, the Orchestra of Opera North.
Gordon Stewart continues to showcase the great Father Willis Organ in his lunchtime season and with the help of several internationally renowned performers, will once again have the newly refurbished Huddersfield Town Hall filled to bursting with the finest music.
Opera North will be presenting its talent on a smaller scale in the Lunchtime Chamber Concert Season, with four concerts in the season featuring artists from across the performing company. It’s not all change though, as two of the most popular concerts from previous seasons will be making a welcome return.
Classic FM, Opera North’s Media Partner and long-time supporter of the Kirklees Concert Season, has picked through the programmes and so, on selected concert pages, you may notice the Classic FM Hall of Fame logo. Within these concerts pieces of music that have been voted as some of the all-time favourite music by the listeners of Classic FM are being performed.
We are sure you will enjoy the musical feast on offer and look forward to welcoming you throughout the year.
Phil Boughton Director of Orchestra and Chorus, Opera North
Ruth Redfern Director of Communities, Transformation and Change

Opera North’s new Music Director, Aleksandar Markovic is an ardent fan of Scriabin’s music. The colourful, eerie and almost ethereal soundscapes evident throughout Nuances fit perfectly with the dream-world created by Berlioz in his ‘Symphonie Fantastique: An episode in the Life of an Artist.’ From pastures to lavish ballroom and from the guillotine to the intoning bells heralding the Day of Judgement, there is no work like this iconic symphony.
Also based on the Dies Irae, Rachmaninov’s iconic Variations feature one of the most enduring pieces of classical music. They are performed here by BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, pianist Pavel Kolesnikov.

Stefan Blunier conducts a programme anchored with two works of a nautical flair. Berlioz’s Overture Le Corsaire celebrates the life of the brigand and his views of the sea while Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade tells the tale of the courtesan who stayed her execution by spinning out her story of Sinbad until the Sultan revoked his sentence.
No such stay existed for our other lovers depicted tonight through Prokofiev’s evocative score for Romeo and Juliet. The music in the suite beautifully captures the drama and poignancy of the doomed romance.

Enchanting children of all ages since 1982 and a perennial favourite of Opera North, Howard Blake’s score to Raymond Briggs’ The Snowman is brought magically to life alongside a screening of the film that no Christmas should be without.
Before that, John Savournin, a stalwart of Opera North productions (Kiss Me, Kate, La Bohème, A Midsummer Night’s Dream) delivers a captivating retelling of Paul Patterson’s settings of two classic nursery rhymes; Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs. Based on the Roald Dahl versions and complete with a big screen picture book to tell the stories, this concert is sure to enthrall the whole family.

Before experiencing a bohemian Christmas Eve in a Parisian garret, featuring soloists from the Chorus of Opera North, we take a musical overview of the season through the eyes of J.S. Bach, Vivaldi, Rutter and Sibelius.
With some old favourites and new discoveries, we will be sure to raise the roof with the audience carols.

Aleksandar Markovic returns to close the Kirklees Concert Season with an epic concert showcasing music at its most descriptive to paint landscapes of three different countries. From the woodlands of Finland and the realm of Tapiola, we travel across the water for Bruch’s evocative Scottish Fantasy. With its roots firmly embedded in folk music the heritage of the work is clear and Jack Liebeck, who recently recorded all Bruch’s violin works for Hyperion, is the perfect person to return to Huddersfield to bring the music to life.
Strauss’ tone poem Eine Alpensinfonie begins at daybreak in the mountains and we can vividly imagine the crevasses and rock formations as we trek ever upwards towards the summit. The contrast between the outward vistas and the inner reflection of the climber is poignantly juggled throughout this monumental work.

‘Markovic’s Heldenleben was dramatic, but without bombast… It was precise, controlled, full of dynamic and thematic contrasts, but essentially integrated’ The Reviews Hub on Kirklees Concert Season 2015/16
The Kirklees Concert Season is launched in high heroic style with Richard Strauss’ tone poem Ein Heldenleben, which charts the progress of a hero’s life in thrilling fashion. It’s an exhilarating showcase for the orchestra, encompassing the clamorous excitement of the battlefield and the passionate lyricism of a portrait of the composer’s wife Pauline in the guise of the ‘hero’s companion’. Opening proceedings are two works by Wagner.
Rienzi was the composer’s third opera and his first big success. It is Grand Opera at its grandest, and the extravagant overture, which culminates in a jaunty military march, also includes one of Wagner’s noblest melodies, Rienzi’s Prayer.

Lunchtime Concerts

The Lunchtime Concert series is back once again! At Huddersfield Town Hall, the ever popular Dr. Gordon Stewart, Kirklees Borough Organist, is at the helm for the organ concerts along with some talented guest performers. Phil Boughton Opera North’s Director of Orchestra and Chorus, has programmed this year’s lunchtime concerts in Dewsbury, showcasing the talents of the Company’s musicians along with local artists in this intimate setting.
Regular Lunchtime Concert goers often comment how wonderfully friendly and sociable these daytime events are, and with competitively priced lunches available from 11.30am, ticket holders can enjoy a bite to eat and chat prior to sitting back and enjoying the uplifting music on offer. Friendly chat from Gordon Stewart and our other season performers provides the audience with an insight into the music, as well as a few entertaining personal anecdotes.
As we are sure you are aware, the council is changing and having to look at new ways of delivering the lunchtime season. After consulting with a number of audience members last year, we have decided to implement a single £5 ticket price for the 2016/17 season. Season tickets for all 13 organ concerts at Huddersfield are available for just £43, whilst season tickets for all 6 lunchtime concerts at Dewsbury are available for just £20 – both offering a 50% saving. Whilst we acknowledge there has had to be an increase, we feel both individual and season tickets are still great value for money.
For full booking and venue details, see information toward the rear of this brochure.
Please Note – the concert on Wednesday 22 February 2017 will be held at Batley Town Hall.

Gordon Stewart opens the series with a wide-ranging programme including the piece John Cook wrote as part of the celebrations for the Queen’s accession in 1952. The Grand Fantasia in F Minor by Mozart makes a fine centrepiece, and the virtuosic Toccata by Augustin Barié a perfect finale.

Tom Osborne, co-principal trumpet in the Hallé Orchestra, is a Huddersfield lunchtime favourite. This year he opens with the Suite by Jeremiah Clarke which includes the most famous of all trumpet pieces, the Trumpet Voluntary. Andrew Carter’s exciting Petite Suite had its first performance at Huddersfield Town Hall in 2001 and was later recorded by Tom Osborne and Gordon Stewart. It is a tradition that Tom ends his Huddersfield recitals with a virtuoso piece for cornet; this year it’s the Variations on Rule Britannia.

Nigel Ogden again plays the first of our three Christmas concerts. Presenting the long-running BBC Radio 2 series, The Organist Entertains has made him one of the country’s best-known organists, and his Town Hall programmes are always full of fun and variety. He even coaxes theatre organ sounds from the Father Willis organ which are otherwise unheard in the series! This year his programme includes tributes to Eric Coates and Lerner and Lowe as well as light classical music by Dvořák and Delibes.

Gordon Stewart is once more joined by Huddersfield Boys’ and Girls’ Choirs and Derbyshire’s Flute Salad in a programme of Christmas music from all round the world. The organ solos include music by Daquin, Bach, Rawsthorne and Quef. A real Christmas celebration and an opportunity to join in singing well-known carols with the choir and Father Willis organ.

When the Father Willis organ had major work done in 1997 the council commissioned Noel Rawsthorne to write a piece for the opening recital. Dance Suite is real Town Hall music, certainly not meant for church use! Earlier in the programme Gordon Stewart plays Pachelbel’s sublime Chaconne and Bach’s massive Toccata, Adagio and Fugue.

The name Rheinberger seldom appears in these concerts, although at one time his music was extremely popular. The third sonata, based on the eighth plainsong tone, is the shortest of the 20 he wrote and is notable for its wonderful concluding fugue. Earlier in the programme come the Belgian composer Joseph Callaerts’ Toccata and the great E Major Prelude and Fugue by Vincent Lübeck. The programme ends with Albert Renaud’s sparking Toccata in D Minor.

The Director of Music at York Minster makes a return visit with a typically varied programme. Parisian composers Franck, Vierne, Cochereau and Mulet are featured, but British music is there in Spicer and Ogden. Bach opens the programme, although Virgil Fox’s arrangement of Come sweetest death paints the master’s chorale harmonization in glorious romantic organ sound.
