Post OFSTED Action Plan – March 2018 – July 2018

In January 2018, Kirkby College received a section 8 inspection, which converted to section 5, with the outcome that the school was placed into special measures. The final report was published on Tuesday 6 March 2018.

The areas for improvement identified:

Area for improvement 1: Improve the quality of leadership and management by: Establish robust and transparent systems for making and following up referrals around safeguarding. Clear roles and responsibilities for safeguarding. Clear vision for school improvement, understood by staff. Clearly defined leadership roles and responsibilities. Evaluate all aspects of the school’s work thoroughly. All improvement plans identify clear and precise actions, measurable success criteria, timescales, monitoring and evaluation. Strategic approach for provision for pupils who have SEND. Challenge staff underperformance swiftly and provide support to improve. Teachers consistently apply school’s assessment and feedback policy. Clear strategies for allocation of additional funding and evaluating its impact. Ensuring that those responsible for governance have the skills, knowledge and understanding to hold leaders to account.

Area for improvement 2: Improve the quality of teaching, learning and assessment by ensuring that teachers: Plan activities to meet pupils’ different needs and abilities. Plan activities to interest and motivate pupils. Are held to account for pupils’ outcomes.

Area for improvement 3: Improve personal development, behaviour and welfare by: Providing adequate facilities and suitable atmosphere for pupils to eat their lunch in comfort. Ensure toilet facilities provide adequate hygiene and privacy. Teachers apply behaviour policy consistently. Reduce low level disruption in lessons. Improve pupils’ behaviour at unstructured times. Further develop strategies to improve attendance and reduce persistent absence.

Area for improvement 4: Improve provision in sixth form by: Ensure teacher is supported to take strategic role to improve quality of education. Increase opportunities for student to participate in work-related learning and work experience. Improve attendance.

External reviews of governance and the use of pupil premium funding should be undertaken in order to assess how these aspects of leadership and management may be improved.

In response to these identified areas for improvement, the school is proposing to take the following priority actions, detailed below.

A centralised logging system for recording and following up concerns is adopted. Roles and responsibilities and lines of accountability are clear across the whole school. The governing body develop systems to hold leaders to account for all aspects of the schools’ work. The governing body and leaders ensure that students who are disadvantaged get the maximum benefit from pupil premium funding so their progress improves. A robust self-evaluation system is in place across the whole school.
