Assistant Principal’s Message Teacher Planning Week What happens during this week?
In the third last week and last week of this term a day is allocated to the levels and specialist teams to begin the collaborative planning of the teaching and learning for the next term. This planning is driven through one of the six transdisciplinary themes to create a unit of inquiry, e.g. “Sharing the Planet”. Teachers in teams reflect on the disciplines of Numeracy, English, Humanities, Science and The Arts and plan to incorporate important skills and knowledge into the unit. They also focus on planning “stand-alone” units within these subject areas. The specialists also plan collaboratively and contribute to one specific unit of inquiry from each level during the year.
At the heart of the transdisciplinary curriculum is the learner constructing meaning through the five essential elements: concepts, knowledge, skills, attitudes and actions. These elements go beyond disciplinary barriers and forge the curriculum into a coherent whole. The curriculum is transdisciplinary in nature because the meaning of the prefix “trans” is two-fold: to convey learning that has relevance across, between and beyond the subject areas and more importantly, learning that transcends the confines of the subject areas to connect to what is real in the world.
It is a significant undertaking by the school both logistically and financially to facilitate a time such as this, for teachers to engage in a collaborative exercise that takes into account the approach outlined above. On the day that teams are planning, the classroom program continues with the support of the specialists and casual relief teachers. The class teachers will talk to the children about this and prepare them for what to expect on their level planning day.
The different levels of the school will be planning on the following days:
Tuesday 4th Sep Level 1/2
Wednesday 5th Sep Foundation
Friday 7th Sep Specialists
Monday 17th Sep Level 3/4
Thursday 20th Sep Level 5 & 6

Principal’s Fete Stall (yes it is back in 2018) There are now 5 large packing boxes in the foyer of the school under a sign “Principal’s Fete Stall Donations” They are all however rather empty and whilst we are gaining donations for books, toys, clothes and other stalls the Principal’s stall needs some goodies. The children were all reminded at Friday morning assembly today so look out they might be raiding the cupboards at home for some suitable treasure. Please read below details of donation requests and many thanks in advance of your generous donations. Families who have joined the Kingsville community in the last few years may have not experienced this particular fabulous offering which has been a feature of some “fetes past”. So, please note the rules and expectations and essential understandings
- the Principal’s fete Stall is not a ‘trash & treasure’ stall – only treasure is acceptable (however as we know one person’s trash is another person’s treasure)
- KPS families will (that is an official direction)donate to the Principal’s stall numerous fabulous items that may no longer be wanted or needed
- KPS families will then buy these back at exorbitant ( sorry I meant reasonable prices) for the benefit of the wonderful KPS students
So, please begin to dig out all these tasteful items you know you have stashed away that no longer suit
your décor, image, lifestyle or - you no longer want, need or
- were gifts that weren’t useful, or
- to your taste or - perhaps your mother in law gave to you and she lives nowhere near Kingsville and won’t be at
the Fete to spot them for sale Forget Camberwell Market or Footscray Finds this stall will be with your assistance full of - color, design, texture, interest, have a touch of vintage and urban chic – all for the Principal “to
flog” - Reality check of course any items that you think could be sold at the Principal’s treasure
not trash stall please donate
The Transdisciplinary Nature of Inquiry in the Specialist Programs A transdisciplinary approach refers to learning that is not confined by traditional subjects
but is supported and enriched by them. Each Transdisciplinary Theme encompasses universal
understandings common across the world and open enough to embrace a variety of content areas. At
Kingsville Primary single-subject teachers, which include Performing Arts, Visual Arts, PE and Italian,
successfully integrate specialty areas into classroom units of inquiry throughout the year. This process
involves the classroom teachers, specialist teachers and the PYP coordinator. Each specialist area links
with one unit of inquiry per year level at some stage throughout the year.
At the beginning of the year, the specialist teachers study the programme of inquiry (POI) that is in place
for the school across all year levels. The teachers look at which unit of inquiry best fits in with their
specialist area, and how they can best support the classroom teacher to deepen the children’s learning
and understanding. The specialist teachers then attend part of the planning day and the discussion
Page 4
between the teachers revolves around each level’s upcoming unit and how they can integrate their
specialty area to ensure transdisciplinary learning. These conversations assist specialists in making
conceptual and authentic connections. Specialist teachers also attend grade level meetings closer to the
time of the unit to ensure continuity and that we have a common language and understanding about the
central ideas, lines of inquiry and concepts. We then also reflect with classroom teachers on the unit and
any examine any student initiated action that was taken.
Examples of how each specialist area supports and deepens a foundation child’s understanding include:
- exploring and learning about old fashioned games in PE when the children inquired into
“Family histories can help us understand how the past is different to the present”;
- the Performing Arts, Visual Arts and Italian programs making connections to the Central
Idea “Stories have different purposes and can take many forms, through performance of
stories, illustrating stories, and telling stories in other languages.
Specialist teachers also support students during the Grade 6 Exhibition. The exhibition represents a
unique and significant opportunity for students to exhibit the attributes of the IB Learner Profile
developed throughout their primary school years. This is fully supported by all teaching staff, including
the specialist teachers, who work closely with the grade 6 teachers and students to ensure that this is a
major celebration of their learning journey at Kingsville Primary School.

NAPLAN Student Reports Individual NAPLAN results have been posted to Kingsville families for students in grade 3 and 5 and should arrive in the mail soon. NAPLAN (the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) is a national test undertaken by all Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students, designed to provide information on your child’s literacy and numeracy achievements. This year NAPLAN was taken on 15, 16 and 17 May. NAPLAN results provide additional information, which can be used along with school assessment and testing. It allows you to compare your child’s achievement with other children across Australia. By itself, NAPLAN does not improve the quality of education, but it gives us a national snapshot of how our children are doing in those important skills of literacy and numeracy. We encourage you to read the report in the context of what you already know about your child’s academic performance and in conjunction with other assessment information and reports you have received. Further information on how to read the report is found on the NAP website: www.nap.edu.au/results-and-reports/student-reports.html Peter Ritchie Assistant Principal/PYP Coordinator
Updating emergency contact details When a student is enrolled at school parents must provide a range of information which includes details such as:
• address • phone numbers • parent A and B details depending upon individual family circumstances • parent occupations • parent work details • family emergency contacts
Page 5
• child health information • demographic details for students e.g. visa class status • conditional enrolment details e.g. details of any shared parenting arrangements • student access or activity restrictions details e.g. any Family Law Orders
ALL THIS COMES TOGETHER TO PROVIDE THE KEY REFERENCE POINT OF INFORMATION FOR EACH CHILD ON A DAILY BASIS. Whilst this information can be brought up instantly on a computer screen it is only as accurate as what parents and guardians provide and update during the seven years of primary school. ‘Legal Duty of Care” which requires Principals and teachers to take all reasonable steps to reduce risk to students, may be compromised if we do not have up to date and accurate details for each child. Ensuring such information is updated is ultimately a parent responsibility, but in turn the school has a responsibility to remind parents and look for strategic ways to assist parents in gaining these updates.
Please contact the school if any of your details have changed [email protected] with a subject heading of ‘Change of personal details’.

Second Hand Uniform The Second Hand Uniform shop is an important initiative within the school supporting
families to supplement and replace school uniform at a reduced cost. Since the beginning of the year the school has not had a group to run this important community enterprise. So once again I am putting out the call to the school community to find interested parents to take on the Second Hand Uniform shop. If you are able to assist in this school initiative, please leave your name at the office. This can be done in person or by emailing the school with the subject title ‘Second Hand Uniform Shop.’
Sports Update Division Athletics Well done to the 26 children who enjoyed much kinder weather this year on Tuesday 4th September when they competed in the Division Athletics carnival at Keilor Athletics Track. The children showed amazing sportsmanship and resilience when competing in their events. They were part of the Yarraville/Spotswood District of schools who competed against 19 other primary schools in the local area. From this event, I am now pleased to say that we have 12 children going through to the next level of competition, which will be held at Keilor Athletics Track on Tuesday 16th October. Well done to: Maddy Ahlip, Neylan Balbontin, Ronan Bulic, Asha Karunajeewa, Ella Laverty, Ella Leith, Jacob Marron, Ruby Masterton, Ermias Mersha, Olivia Powell, Carla Vallejos, and Jasper Waghorne on their achievements. A big thank you to the staff and parents who helped with this event. Thank you, Lorey Bentley PE and Sport Coordinator [email protected]
