DEAR FRIENDS, I love big ideas. Crafting a season’s worth of amazing music to inspire, move and entertain you is a challenge, but I’m always interested in swinging for the fences. After months of planning, manoeuvering and crafting, we’ve come up with a season that I truly believe will satisfy all of your symphonic desires! Beyond that, I also believe it will quench your thirst for the greatest live performance experiences one could ever hope for. Taking a look at our Masterworks Series, we’re offering up some of the greatest musical masterpieces in history, such as Beethoven’s Eroica, Stravinsky’s Firebird, and a triple helping of Mozart symphonies, written at the peak of his supreme compositional powers. We have outstanding guest artists including masterful pianist Vadim Serebryany, incredible violinists Yosuke Kawasaki and Bénédicte Lauzière, and a whole concert dedicated to our own talent featuring soloists from your Kingston Symphony! Don’t forget about our Pops Series: a Hallowe’en Spooktacular; a salute to the music of Superheroes; an introduction to the world of opera through the lenses of the hysterically funny company Opera 5; and the return of the incomparable Dave Bennett, performing a revue of popular music from Swing to Rock ‘n’ Roll. It couldn’t be more exciting! Beyond that, add a dash of Candlelight Christmas, Kingston’s favourite holiday tradition. Throw in two spectacular family concerts designed for young people and their families and friends, the best way to spend a Sunday afternoon. And the cherry on top? A special performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, complete with an onstage multimedia presentation to give you a behind-the-scenes look at what makes it such an extraordinary piece of music. And, of course, we’re continuing with our special videos, podcasts and pre-concert talks. We’re here to make the experience a magical and memorable one, just for you. This is a powerhouse of a season. Come celebrate with us as we perform some of the world’s best music, partner with entertainment acts you won’t believe, and above all, reap the rewards of big ideas.

Sincerely,

Evan Mitchell, Music Director

Masterworks 1

TCHAIKOVSKY & RACHMANINOFF

What inspires great composers? The Sufi poet Rumi inspired Scott Good’s work. A melody that Tchaikovsky heard performed at a market near Kiev inspired the opening theme of his first Piano Concerto. A new-found self-confidence provided inspiration for Rachmaninoff’s brilliant Symphony No. 2. This concert guarantees an inspiring start to the season!
