Dear Parishioners,
May I wish you all a very Healthy and Happy New Year! It is a joy to be part of your community and to share with the ups and downs of life that we all face. I hope and pray that this year there will be some special times to treasure together and that all will find happiness within our community.
Another year draws to a close, which has had more than its fair share of dramas in our political world! Strange that about 1 in every 3 people didn’t vote and take responsibility for the difficulties we face however hard that has been. I will continue to pray for our politicians in this New Year, whether new to post or having served for many years. May they find wisdom, courage, strength and a desire to serve the common good as we journey forward together. I will pray for us as their constituents that we might support and encourage good will towards those who have taken this responsibility this year.
I encourage you all to make new year’s resolutions that will benefit this world in which we live (not just ourselves) and especially as we face global issues and environment challenges.
A couple of occasions to let your hair down in January – the first is a Quiz Night on Saturday 18th January 7 for 7.30pm at the
Coronation Hall. Either come as a team of up to 6, or just turn up and you will be allocated a team - £5 entry fee and wonderful refreshments to buy (scotch eggs from the Nest on the Ledbury Road) and a bar. We are raising money for the “A Treasure in our Midst” Project which is putting the bid together for the Heritage Lottery Fund to re-roof the North side of the church, redecorate the inside, as well as put on activities that will draw attention to our wonderful church and its interesting past and hopeful future. Come and have a bit of fun!! Please let the office know or the project email that you will find on the posters or invites so that we can order enough food!
The second event is a concert at Aymestrey Village Hall on Friday 25th January at 7.30pm. The Shanty Men will be singing and there will be sandwiches and snacks as well as a bar. We are joining forces as a benefice, to fill the hall and raise money for the common work of the churches. Do come and enjoy the music and merriment. Tickets are available from Peter King our remaining churchwarden as Jean travels the world.
Plough Sunday is celebrated on January 5th and we will pray for our farming community at the beginning of a new year. Every blessing

Kingsland Oral History Project
Over the past few months we have been collecting the memories of older residents of living and working in Kingsland parish from before WW2 through the 20th century. You can listen to them talking about what the village and area was like and their memories of the village, farming, the stores and pubs, the school, the church and chapels, wartime, the beginning of Luctonians, and much more. Everything collected is on a new KingslandLife website page called ‘Memories of Kingsland – The Oral History Project’, which you can find under ‘History’ at www.kingslandlife.com
On our website page, for each participant, you will find the recorded interview and a time coded summary of what they talk about which researchers (or you!) can use to find a particular part of a recording. We have also added photos and documents kindly lent to us by each person.
All the recordings are on a YouTube channel called ‘The Kingsland Oral History Project’ which you can go to directly via searching the name on YouTube or Google. You can subscribe to the channel and you’ll then get an alert when new recordings are added. A copy of the recordings will also go to the Hereford Archives and Record Centre.
Over the next few months we will add new recordings but meanwhile we hope you find what we have collected so far enjoyable and interesting. We’d like to thank everyone who’s taken part so far for your valuable and interesting contributions!
If you would like to share your early memories of living in the village and parish please contact Jackie Markham (01568
708281) or Sally Deakin (01568 708839) who’d love to come and talk to you! We’d also like to hear from you if you’d like to be involved in the project by talking to residents and/or helping write up summaries of interviews.

Messy Church
Messy Church in January is on Sunday 5th
at 9.30am, Some of the more eagle eyed of
you may have spotted that I got ahead of
myself slightly last month and stated the
year as 2021! Sorry about that! We will be
journeying with the Wise Men and
considering our journey through 2020. Do
come and join the crowd, all children with a
responsible adult welcome!
December's gathering was full of
preparations for Christmas, cards,
decorations, sending out Mary and Joseph
into the village and making an advent
crown. We made Christingles and thought
of those children who are not as fortunate
as ourselves. If you haven't been able to get
your candle shaped collecting box back to
church, please drop it in to Rev Julie so that
the money can be collected up and donated
to the Children's Society.
As always, thanks to all the helpers who
make it all happen - and we look forward to
Messy Church throughout 2020, the first
Sunday of every month, half an hour of
activities and craft, a story, a song and a
prayer followed by breakfast, all in
Kingsland Church.

News from the chapels.
Rev. Deanne: The news is still good. She is a lot stronger and has spent a couple of hours at
home this week. She hopes to be able to spend Christmas at home, although she will not be
able to eat! I am not sure what they mean, but she will be able to drink clear liquids!
Further news: As we are without any pastoral support, it is intended to appoint Sharon
O’Connell, a former Salvation Army officer, as a lay pastor to ‘look after’ Deanne’s
churches, Kingsland and Shobdon included. She has led worship at Kingsland twice now
and met our regular congregation – and it hasn’t put her off – so we look forward to the
confirmation of her appointment.
Bible Study: The Bible Study Group will be meeting on Tuesdays, 14th
and 28th January
(weather permitting!) at 2-3 pm. We will be finishing our study of 1 John on
the 14th and starting a new, exciting study after that. Everyone is welcome.
We finish in time to collect children from school. There is no cost and you
do not need to bring anything except an open and enquiring mind.
Advent Festival: Thank you to everyone who took part, whether by entering or coming for
refreshments and to judge! Everyone who had a tea or coffee had a vote and the results were
as follows:
Children Individual: Peter and James
Children’s group: 1st - Kingsland Brownies 2
nd Kingsland Cubs
Adult individual: Lesley Pitchford
Adult Group: Herefordshire Badger Vaccination Group
Looking back, Looking forward: On 29th December, amongst other things, you will have
the opportunity to sing those Christmas hymns and carols you love, but which have not been
sung this year. Let me know by phone or email (see below) and come and sing!
Inspiration to Creation: Writing workshops will start on Wednesday 8th
January. Do
contact Fay Wentworth on 01568708789 or email [email protected] if you
are interested.
The Parent and Toddler Group is at Shobdon Chapel on Friday mornings. For more details

Church Lunch: The next Church Lunch will be on 28th
January, 12.30 pm at The Angel.

are on Wednesday mornings. Please contact Mary on 07769686259 if you'd like to join or

Nature Notes
After the festivities and possibly, over-
indulgence, of Christmas it can be hard to
get up in the mornings in January! For dog
walkers there is very little choice in the
matter as most of our four-legged friends
are more than ready to go out at any time of
day, whether light or dark, and in most
kinds of weather.
Dark mornings can be an excellent time for
spotting wildlife - after allowing time for
your eyes to adjust you may well catch a
glimpse of a large, silent shape of a tawny
or barn owl but even if you don't see any
movement you might hear an animal or bird
if you listen hard. Owls are noisy at this
time of year, but badgers and foxes are
busy too - rummaging for food to keep
them going through the cold winter.
Occasionally you may hear a vixen scream
to attract a male suitor as they enter their
breeding season. A walk in the hard frost
or snow on a cold winter day may reveal
which animals have been busy in the area
and where they have been travelling to and
from.
In woods, parks and gardens new life can
be seen on even the darkest day as bulbs
such as daffodils and bluebells reach for the
light, joining snowdrops which are starting
to bloom and primroses may start to appear
too. Lichen and mosses appear on trees and
stone walls and red and green dogwoods
provide spectacular colour. Hawthorn,
field maple, blackthorn and guelder rose
continue to provide food, shelter and
nesting cover for wildlife, particularly small
garden birds.
Those of you with cider fruit trees or even
eating apple trees will probably enjoy a
little wassailing coming from the Anglo
Saxon "waes hael" meaning good health
and celebrated traditionally on New Year's
Eve or Twelfth Night by pouring some of
last season's cider around the roots of the
tree, hanging toast soaked in cider in the
tree or on the base of it and firing a shot
gun off into the tree branches to ward off
evil spirits. The idea is to promote the new
season's crop, enjoy some social cider and a
jug of cider too!
Wishing you all a prosperous New Year.

Luctonians Sports Club Report
Since my last report Luctonians 1st XV
have found some form with three victories
in their last five outings. The improvement
started in mid-November when we hosted
Fylde who were sitting a comfortable
second in the league table. We matched
them in every department before going
down 25- 27. We then travelled to
Scunthorpe and came away with a
comfortable 40-8 victory followed by a 29-
3 home win over Preston Grasshoppers.
For our first game in December we took
the long trek up to Grassington in the
picturesque Yorkshire Dales. The scenery
was undoubtedly the highlight for me
because for some inexplicable reason we
simply failed to turn up, gave our most
disappointing performance of the season
and went down 25-5.
The coaching staff turned on the flame
throwers at training the following Tuesday
with the smell of burning flesh allegedly
apparent the length of North Road. It had
the desired effect however because on the
following Saturday visitors, Huddersfield,
were beaten 15-5. Undoubtedly our
defence has been a key factor in our
victories because despite periods of
sustained pressure, Scunthorpe, Preston
and Huddersfield could only muster two
tries between them. It is still work in
progress however. Although we are now
just clear of the three teams in the
relegation zone we have to retain our
recent form and push on.
Since the beginning of November our 2nd
XV has turned in five consecutive victories
with wins over Bromsgrove, Derby,
Bournville, Leicester Lions and Bridgnorth
and our 3rd
XV have also had a measure of
success with two victories in their last six
matches, a statement that perhaps requires
an explanation. Nobody seems to run a 3rd
string anymore so all their fixtures have
been against the 2nd
XVs of other clubs and
this with a side that contains more than a
smattering of last season’s Colts. In the
meantime our U14s and U16s have both
reached the quarter finals of the North
Midlands Cup.
On the social scene, we hosted six
Christmas parties for local businesses and
organizations over the festive period, with
110 punters being the smallest turn out. If
you want an excellent venue, top quality
food and value for money all laced with a
generous dose of fun and frivolity then
book now for 2020. Just mention my
name.
Huw Davies.

Kingsland Bowls Club (midNov-midDec
2019) – party animals?!
It’s an ill wind – while the fields around are
saturated and any visiting hippo would be
happy in the mud, the reseeding has seen
the grass grow well and the green looks
great, thanks to the tender ministrations of
our Super Green.
Meanwhile, Winter Social Events have
commenced. In mid-November we had an
extremely popular Italian Evening, with
lasagne to die for (soft in the middle, crisp
round the edges, just how I like it!) from
Catering Queen Signora Irina. Thanks to
all who helped with this sera bellissima; our
table won the quiz by a single point – just
as well, as I had committed myself to
crawling under the table if we lost. I’ve
lived in Italy – but nobody ever told me
what the colours of the Italian flag stood
for! Barry, you were right and I was
wrong; I eat humble pie (but I’d prefer
spaghetti). In case you need this essential
information, green is for hope, white is for
faith, and I suppose red is for charity – I did
think it might be for Chianti, but there we
are.
The Friday Event for 29th November was
my own Beastly Quiz. Some people felt it
was more beastly than necessary; they
found it tough - but surely everyone knows
that the Small Tortoiseshell is a symbol for
Denmark?! Oh, alright, perhaps that’s a bit
academic. How about sex? – no, no, not
like that, we’re British and we prefer hot-
water bottles - I meant the gender of that
screaming fox - yes, it was a vixen.
Thank you to the caterers of the evening -
the food was simple and satisfying.
Our traditional Annual Christmas Bingo
took place at the Coronation Hall on
Wednesday 4th December; Gary’s Sue had
created some wonderful Bakewell tarts iced
with holly and berries – I was left holding
the tray, trying to fend off assorted
members who thought they ought to do
quality control. Unfortunately I wasn’t
able to attend the actual Bingo, but am told
it went swimmingly, with good attendance
and some tasty hampers as well as free
mince pies – well done to Rob and Irene
Wheeler and helpers, another very
successful evening.
We had a wonderful Christmas Lunch from
Chef Supreme Morgan, who never makes
us do cold turkey – a splendid spread, with
apple crumble & custard to follow; even
fruit salad for those who had already
crumbled after the lavish main course, and
cheese and biscuits finished us all off in a
festive fashion. Congratulations to
Malcolm & Pat and all the Elves, and of
course especially Jimmy – I do like to see a
man in an apron! President Joan had
contributed a beautiful fruit basket for the
raffle, and there were various other
generous prize donations. Kevin worked so
hard behind the bar, he deserves a medal –
he also assisted me to stop the lovely
Christmas tree from flashing; members
were warned that flashing was not an
alternative to firing.
Events coming up in January – our New
Year Party(3rd
) and Pig-Racing, (17th).
A Happy New Year to all our members
and friends – see you soon!
Just a small reminder – we’ll be very
pleased if you can get subs in by end of
January!

Poppy Appeal 2019. The results of the
2019 Appeal are as follows:-
House Collections £670.55
Static points £966.44
Kingsland Church £387.61
Orleton Church £157.00
Wreaths £156.00
Donations* £937.84
Total £3275.44
* this includes sums from RBL, Lucton
School and Eyton Church
Overall, this shows a reduction of £469.29
from 2018 mainly due to a marked drop in
door to door donations and most other
sources, offset by an increase in donations.
This is the last time that Mrs Jan Nichols
will act as our Poppy Appeal Organiser. We

no one is forthcoming by end of January
