Humanitarian Aid Programs

Kimse Yok Mu (KYM) aims to save the lives of endangered people, ease the griefs of victims of disasters and the vulnerable while protecting their dignity and increasing their resilience. In order to bring effective solutions to chronic poverty, to diminish deprivation and make health care and education accessible to everyone around the world, KYM develops projects and provides social support, healthcare, education, post disaster and post conflict assistance particularly in the least developed countries and disaster zones.

KYM is committed to providing aid to people in need at their most dire moments and aims to leave a lasting impact on their lives regardless of their nationality, religion, gender or ethnic origin. KYM believes in the importance of partnerships for effective humanitarian action and for that reason cooperates with UN bodies, international organizations and NGOs. It efficiently provides disaster response and emergency aid around the globe through its strong collaboration with local authorities. Besides disaster response and emergency service KYM tries to strengthen the link between humanitarian work and sustainable development projects.

KYM has extensively worked with trained experts who have volunteered in the fields of search and rescue, medicine, and trauma counseling. These experts have worked in 11 different disaster zones worldwide and raised awareness on disaster preparedness. More than 100.000 people in Turkey were taught the necessary procedures for protecting themselves in case of disasters. In addition, the team has taken an active role in disaster response and has used top notch equipment and logistical assets to reach those in urgent need.

KYM has also extended its services to nearly 300,000 families in poverty across Turkey. Acting as a bridge between sponsors and families in need, KYM has implemented a project named ‘sister families’. These families support each other emotionally and financially in times of great need. If possible, sister families are invited to meet and talk to one another.

KYM Kindness Centers are places that offer impoverished individuals donated clothing. They are able to browse Kindness Centers as if shopping in a store and choose

the articles of their liking. KYM also provides regular aid packages to the needy families and tries to create opportunities to fight against poverty such as finding jobs for parents or providing scholarships to the children who want to continue their education.

Social Support and Food PackagesDuring 2015, we reached vulnerable regions to support people in need and distributed food packages, worth around 1,8 million dollars, to more than 100.000 families in more than 40 countries. We provided social support to registered families in 2015. We carried out cash assistance projects and delivered in-kind aid, worth 26.630.226,22 TL, to more than 35.000 families in total. 2.661 of these families, who were examined by our team to determine their level of vulnerability, benefitted from KYM’s cash asistance, worth 2.670.412,89 TL and 34.370 of them received in-kind donation, worth 23.959.813,33 TL

Development ProgramsHealthcare ProgramsKYM (KYM) focuses on long term strategies to save lives and help communities find solutions to escape poverty and vulnerability. One of the primary goals of the organization is to address health issues that directly interfere in the socioeconomic development of many individuals worldwide. Supporting health services such as medical scanning, obstetrics and gynecology are among KYM’s primary goals. However, special emphasis on Cataracts, a condition of the eye that leads to impaired vision is of top priority for KYM’s health development department. The organization, with its global partners, funds the removal of Cataracts through surgery for vulnerable patients worldwide. This eye condition, which can be related to ageing, injury, disease, or simply from birth, is treatable and its removal can allow people to enjoy a healthy and productive life. The personal and social impact that cataracts can have on people’s lives can be overwhelming and detrimental to socioeconomic development. Individuals affected can be prevented from obtaining and keeping employment, attending school if they are children, and possibly shunned by their community because of certain taboos related to vision impairment. KYM aims to provide these people, with direct emphasis on children, the chance to lead normal lives. One of the strategies of the organization is to develop additional partnerships with other development offices (both NGO and government sponsored) to increase the number of health services that provide this surgery in more countries worldwide.KYM constructed hospitals in Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Somalia and furnished medical facilitates to provide technical support to hospitals and healthcare centers, according to the needs of the host institution. From 2008-2013, KYM carried out 22,500 successful cataract surgeries in the Darfur and Khartoum regions of Sudan, Cameroon, Chad, Niger, DRC, Congo, and Central African Republic. 372 volunteer doctors conducted 67 medical screenings in 8 countries. In 2014 Mali, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burkina Faso, Pakistan, Nepal, Guinea, and the Congo Republic were added to program. The total number of cataract surgeries performed exceeded 40,000 as of September 2015. This was nearly double the number of surgeries completed during all the previous years combined. The total number of eye examinations is estimated to be around 405,000.KYM has also been engaged in medical staff training. This project aims to train the medical staff and doctors of four hospitals that KYM opened in Ethiopia, Somalia, Uganda, and Kenya. It has sent doctors from Turkey to these countries to work within their areas of specialization and to educate the medical staff there. The project also involves medical staff from these four hospitals traveling to Turkey and Europe to receive further training there.

Refugees ProgramKYM aims to provide both short-term relief and sustainable solutions to improve the living conditions of refugees around the world. As a humanitarian aid and development organization committed to providing aid to people in need at their most dire moments, it is committed to developing a humanitarian approach, including the participation of vulnerable civilians in the implementation processes of all its projects. The organization emphasizes the reinforcement of self-worth, encouraging and providing refugees a platform to achieve self-reliance. Every human being has the right to have his or her dignity respected. Ignoring the capacity of refugees to build a better future for themselves undermines this goal. For this reason, KYM designs and executes projects, with active contributions

from refugees it serves, to support self-reliance within the context of socioeconomic and positive health development.Currently millions of refugees do not have access to educational, medical services, housing and employment. KYM offers sustainable solutions to transform the living conditions of refugees through its projects that include the building of schools, hospitals, vocational training centers and capacity building programs. KYM believes that designing, constructing and funding projects that contribute to Educational Advancement, Medical Assistance, and Infrastructure Development will have a large scale impact on the lives of refugees and increase their chances for a more dignified life, with equal access to sustainable development initiatives. KYM has supported refugees through humanitarian aid programs which not only helps to improve the life conditions and provide emergent aid but also aim to empower refugees acknowledging their active role in humanitarian action. Cash assistance project carried out together with UNCHR is a good example of this.Cash assistance project was funded by UNHCR and coordinated by KYM with the aim of providing financial support to Syrian refugee families living in South-East Turkey. During the execution of project 2,825 families were identified and information on them were gathered. Separate bank accounts were opened for each family, and cash assistance were deposited to each account according to the number of family members. Through mobilizing our volunteer base of 205,000 members, we were able to execute the project with less than 2% administrative cost. All of the remaining aid was given to refugees. In addition to project’s success due to very high efficiency, this project gave refugees the right to choose what they will purchase as opposed to distributing standardized basic aid packages. The Syrian civil war, which started in 2011, has been going on for the last four years and continues with an increasing intensity. One of the most important basic needs of Syrian refugees in Turkey is to access education. Among millions of refugees, there are thousands of school-aged children. KYM addressed this urgent need for the education of refugee children through temporary education centers in Kilis and Hatay Yayladağı (in Turkey) where refugees densely live. The Ministry of Education names these institutions as “Temporary Education Centers.” In these schools, Syrian refugee teachers educate refugee children in Arabic by following the Syrian school curriculum. The program is also providing employment to refugees, as the principals,

teachers and other employees are all from Syria as well. The stationery needs of these students are provided by KYM. KYM has partnered with NGOs from Singapore and Japan to establish these schools. In addition to courses in Syrian curriculum, children also learn English and Turkish. KYM has also partnered with UNHCR for a school in Erbil, Iraq for Syrian refugees and provided all materials and stationery necessities.

Hatay Yayladağı Sakura Education CenterCurrently, there are 320 refugee students enrolled in Yayladağı Sakura Education Center and 200 in Kilis Temasek Education Center. The grades range from kindergarten to high school level.

Education ProgramEducation is arguably the best investment for sustainable development, however, neither the current state of education nor the attention it gets is at a satisfactory level in many parts of the world. Despite dramatic improvements over the past decade, progress towards achieving universal education system has slowed in the last years. Millions of children of primary school and secondary school age are still out of school while many others drop out of school. Children with a disability and girls are more disadvantaged than their peers in access to school. Also, the percentage of children attending school drops dramatically if they are living in poor households and in rural regions. In addition, approximately 250 million children are currently in school

but learning very little. Between one to three quarters of children from developing countries cannot read a single word even after several years in school and 3 out of 10 cannot do basic arithmetic.KYM (KYM) gives utmost significance to the activities in the field of education within the scope of sustainable development programs. KYM firmly believes in the necessity of providing quality education to bring about sustainable change in communities. Renovating current schools and improving their conditions, KYM hopes to make quality education accessible to children from all around the world and ensure that they develop qualifications that will prepare them for future professions. Only through quality education, they can achieve to become self-sufficient individuals, who contribute to the socio-economic development of their societies in significant ways.KYM has built tens of schools around the world and has supported education through scholarships given to students who otherwise could not afford their tuition. Thousands of international and Turkish students were given funding to further their education. In 2015, 2185 students from 9 countries granted scholarhips, worth 1.161.525 TL.

Vulnerable Children and Women ProgramKYM aims to reach out to vulnerable children living in different parts of the world and support their right to live, have access to education, protection and adequate housing, health care, freedom, clean water, healthy

food. Our purpose is to ensure that children at risk are immediately supported through sustainable solutions and their dignity is respected. Specifically addressing the needs and rights of orphans and refugee children, children with a disability and girls through building schools, hospitals and orphanages, KYM hopes to contribute to building a future in which disadvantaged children will enjoy the same opportunities as their peers and will not be left behind.KYM provided education and health care to more than around 120.000 orphans in 61 countries as of 2015. KYM establishes dormitories for vulnerable children from all around the world. KYM built 13 orphanages and renovated 18 others. In partnership with the Kyrgyzstani presidency, KYM pioneered the construction of an educational institution for the country’s orphans costing nearly $3.3 million. The school consists of a swimming pool, ballet theatre and sports center. KYM is also sponsoring a new dormitory to increase the school’s capacity and the standard of living for the students. One of the goals of KYM is to ensure women’s participation in socio-economic development of their communities through structural and sustainable improvement in their lives. Improved health outcomes, having equal access to education and overcoming cultural barriers to achieving gender parity helps women to strengthen their agency and empowerment. Healthy women are more able to actively participate in society and take collective action to advance their own interests as well as contribute significantly to the development in their societies. Educated women are more likely to have greater bargaining power and control over resources within the household and they are more equipped against violence, discrimination and violation of their rights. Although some projects specifically address women and girls, taking into account the fact that they are disproportionately affected by poverty, natural disasters and violence and they do not have equal access to education and health care, each project benefits the men and boys as well. The sustainable change can only be achieved through collective engagement and understanding which eventually is beneficial for everyone.KYM organizes vocational training programmes for women from all around the world. Women receive training in culinary arts, sewing, gardening, textiles, and electronics. One recent project by KYM in Niger has offered trainings to teach modern agricultural methods to increase fertility and food security in the region. Unlike most trainings which usually address men only, KYM has organized women-only trainings because women did not want to participate in the same sessions as men. KYM aimed to make sure that

women benefited from the trainings equally and have the power to run their business afterwards.

KYM reached 61 countries in 2015 and provided humanitarian aid and social support to 122.795 children.

Clean Water ProgramAround the world, more than 750 million people do not have access to clean water. Approximately 2.5 billion people do not have access to sufficient sanitation facilities. Consequently, a child in poverty dies from a water-related disease every minute. Women and children, who are often given the responsibility of water retrieval, collectively spend more than 140 million hours a day collecting this resource. Together, their lives are often endangered because of the risks posed by structural violence, wild animals, and water-bourn illnesses. Despite these statistics, a merely six percent of global relief aid is allocated to water access in less developed nations.

KYM (KYM) is committed to providing access to clean water for vulnerable communities worldwide. The organization has made this initiative a priority among its projected development programs. Taking into account the diverse contextual conditions that characterize many countries or regions in need, KYM aims to initiate water access projects through the construction of Water Wells with Hand Pumps. When fresh surface water is not an option, access to water below the ground can be utilized. Community residents can manually pump this water, dispensing the resource at their own pace from wells with hand pumps. Simply installing 2000 of these wells has the capacity to serve over 4 million people. KYM, with the support of its partners, plans to construct at least 3000 hand pump operated wells in different countries by 2020. Partnerships for Water Access on a local and international level are essential for the sustainability of vulnerable people to be provided this needed resource on a daily basis. KYM actively researches the organizations and government offices that are taking the steps forward in providing new initiatives for water resource development. The organization also researches the latest technological advances in water production and distribution and seeks to increase its capacity of knowledge in the subject by engaging in conferences and forums with other people working in the field. And most importantly KYM intends to develop effective communication channels that provide regular updates regarding the water wells it will install overseas. All of these measures guarantee sustainability and proper utilization of the technology by communities it serves and partners that oversea its development.Access to water is a human right. An effective approach to provide this resource and reach millions of vulnerable communities worldwide is a commitment of KYM. All people deserve a fair chance to live a healthy, economically productive and peaceful life. Accessible water contributes to this objective. KYM will work at implementing water resource projects so that all people can realize their socioeconomic potential without the threat posed by water inaccessibility and its negative impact on international development.KYM has manufactured six thousands water backpacks and has distributed them in Senegal and Chad. KYM started clean water projects in 2011 with 96 water wells. The total number of wells has increased to 1,768 in nineteen different countries at the end of 2014. As of June 2015 the number of wells increased to more than 3000. In regions where there is a need for large supply of water KYM builds water storage facilities.
