Teaching

I have taught a range of courses in the US, Sweden, and South Korea, all of which focus on student-centered learning. At student requests, I have designed and given several workshops on research design and presentation. I also engage in the scholarship of teaching and learning, and see teaching as a compliment to my research program. Course Responsible

2013, 2014: Earth System Science, Lund University. 10 ECTS credits. Designed and led course on the nine Planetary Boundaries in sustainability science (Rockström et al., 2009, Nature) for MSc students, including research and experimental design, quantitative data analysis in R, three day field camp, and introduction to scientific writing.

2011, 2012: Environmental Problem Awareness, Lund University. 7.5 ECTS credits. Designed and led course on human and natural sustainability challenges, including skills in research and experimental design, three day field camp, and introduction to academic writing.

2010, 2011, 2012, 2013:

Rural Systems and Sustainability, Lund University. 7.5 ECTS credits. Designed and led MSc course on climate and land use change and sustainable agriculture, including lectures, field trips, problem sets, case studies, and intensive scientific writing in preparation for the MSc thesis.

2012: Co-Instructor, Global Climate and Environmental Change, Global Collaborative Program, Kyung Hee University, Suwon, South Korea Designed and taught the first two weeks of an intensive four-week course on climate and global change for undergraduate and postgraduate students participating in international summer exchange program.

Research Group Leadership and Mentoring

I am committed to mentoring early-career scientists and involving them in research, starting with supervising nearly 20 undergraduates while a graduate student. I now lead an active research group, with two current PhD students and five MSc students pursuing research on global land management, ecosystem services, and food security. Of the students I have supervised, 15 MSc and one PhD have gone on to careers in academia, development, government, education, and industry.

Hired, trained, and supervised a total of 17 undergraduates (five from Wisconsin, seven from Stanford, and six from UC Davis) to collect field data, gather and analyze literature, perform lab work, analyze data, and interpret results as part of my dissertation research. Part-time during the academic year and full-time during summers. Advised team of 5 graduate students on an analysis of the impacts of climate change on international wine prices, and policy recommendations to the California legislature on competitiveness and adaptation in the wine industry.
