ENEMIES ON the hurling pitch but good friends when it comes to supporting the GAA family.

That’s exactly the position the U21 hurlers of Kilkenny and Tipperary find themselves in as they prepare for a ‘friendly’ match to boost school playing facilities.

On March 20 the rivals meet in a fundraising challenge under lights in Ballyragget at 7.30pm. In a similar fixture a year ago the teams produced a full-blooded encounter.

Tipp went on to qualify for the Munster Final where they were pipped by Clare who later beat Kilkenny in

the All-Ireland Final.Monies raised by this year’s

spectacular will go towards completing a playing pitch at the rear of the Kilkenny CBS Primary School, Stephens Street, Kilkenny. The project so far has seen the playing surface levelled and reseeded and new goalposts erected.

While the new pitch has been available to the CBS Primary and Secondary Schools since October there remains some outstanding works to be completed, including the provision of ‘ball stoppers’ and renovation of dressing-rooms.

Every week hundreds of students avail of this facility

where they learn and develop the skills of hurling and Gaelic Football. CBS Secondary School Principal Tom Clarke thanked all for their support for the weekly Lotto, St Patrick’s, Ballyragget, for the use of their facilities, Tipperary and Kilkenny U21 hurlers and all involved in promoting the GAA in the CBS schools.

The CBS have also thanked The Gourmet Store, High Street which has kindly sponsored the challenge.

Eamon Mansfield will referee the game and the teams will be managed by Richard Mulrooney (Kilkenny) and Ken Hogan. Admission is €5.Beautiful: Newly laid CBS pitch

India bound: Paula McDonald

ALTHOUGH SEVEN hours is often cited as the recommended amount of sleep we need, there is no magic number. We tend to need slightly less sleep as we age, but sleep needs are also individual..

You may function best on seven hours a night, while someone else may need nine or as few as four hours to lead a happy, productive life.

If you regularly experience difficulty sleeping, a few small adjustments to your diet may help you to get a better night’s sleep.

Drinking a glass of warm milk before bed will help you to sleep better - it’s not just an old wives’ tale! Dairy products are rich in the amino acid tryptophan, as well as calcium, both of which boost the levels of sleep-inducing substances serotonin and melatonin in the brain.

Other foods that may aid sleep include yogurt, milk, cheese, oats, bananas, poultry, eggs, peanuts and tuna - all of these foods contain good amounts of tryptophan.

Herbal teas such as camomile, lime blossom and orange blossom are low in caffeine and have a soothing and relaxing effect.

Eating a carbohydrate snack e.g. a slice of bread, cracker or piece of fruit about 1-2 hours before going to bed stimulates the release of insulin.

This helps to clear amino acid proteins that compete with tryptophan from the bloodstream, allowing more of this sleep-inducing amino acid to enter the brain. What to avoid for a better night’s sleep...

A large late evening meal interferes with sleep by causing the stomach to produce acid, resulting in heartburn and indigestion. Try to eat your main meal at least three hours before going to bed. Don’t take supplements just before bed. Some ‘B’ vitamins or ginseng for example, can make it more difficult for you to drop off.

Alcohol. Too much alcohol at one sitting causes blood sugar levels to drop thus waking you up in the middle of the night. Even though alcohol can make you drowsy and helps some people to fall asleep, too much can interfere with getting a good night’s sleep.

In addition to the hangover effect, alcohol may suppress the rapid eye

movement (REM) sleep state that’s critical to obtaining quality sleep hours.

Curbing Caffeine The stimulant effect of caffeine reaches its peak one to four hours after it’s consumed, but some people can feel its effects up to 12 hours later. Remember that whilst coffee, tea and fizzy drinks are the main sources of caffeine, chocolate also contains caffeine (an ounce of dark chocolate is equivalent to a quarter cup of brewed coffee).

If you find that you are particularly sensitive and it’s keeping you awake at night, then try to limit it to the morning time, but if you still are having trouble sleeping, try using the decaffeinated versions or eliminate it completely. It may be necessary to say no to that after-dinner espresso or late-night cuppa!

TOMORROW, Thursday, over 150 finalists from secondary schools all over Kilkenny will set up enterprise exhibition displays at Newpark Hotel, Kilkenny, before taking part in a series of judging interviews.

The SEA programme provides second level students from first year through to sixth year with the chance to set up and run their own business.

The competition begins in September at the start of the academic year and hours of work and dedication are involved before students are selected to represent their school at the county final. The SEA is a national initiative organised and promoted by the national network of County & City Enterprise Boards (CEBs), culminating in a national final on April 17 in Croke Park this year.

Last year Kilkenny enjoyed success with ‘Powercraft Ltd’ managed and run by twin brothers James and Sean Power winning first prize intermediate.

The enterprising twins are back again this year competing in the senior section with a new enterprise.

The competition certainly demonstrates that there is plenty of entrepreneurial

talent in Kilkenny. Adjudicators mark the budding entrepreneurs on key business areas such as innovation, market research, sales, production, marketing, finances and planning. Judging will be held throughout the morning and the event is open to the public from 1pm.

Winners will be announced at 2pm with a formal presentation by the Board. There will be winners in junior, intermediate and senior.

The Kilkenny Women in Business Network is sponsoring the Best Commercial Award, while the Institute of Technology, Carlow, will sponsor the Science/Technology Award. A number of other special category awards will also be presented at the County Final; most innovative product, best display, best report and best teamwork.

“The Student Enterprise Awards, now in their eleventh year, help to create an enterprising culture within secondary schools, by encouraging students to set up innovative business with their classmates, as part of a nationwide competition,” Fiona Deegan, CEO of Kikenny Enterprise Board told The Reporter.

The growing number of working parents in Ireland has increased the need for childcare facilities.Traditionally in this country, family members such as grandparents helped out with childcare while parents went to work. However, if you don’t live near relatives who can look after your little ones, there are plenty of other options available.Deciding on childcare appropriate to your needs is a major decision for any parent. There are a number of factors that will make an impact on your final decision. These include your child’s age, whether you need full or part-time care, the hours you need the services for, your budget and the services available in your area. Creches — usually in the form of day care centres where qualified adult take care of children — are becoming more and more popular with Irish parents.Creches offer a structured care service for more than three and a half hours per day. A majority of providers care for children from aged three months to six years, while some may also include an after-school facility for older children. Most creche facilities are

purpose built and must adhere to strict guidelines put in place by the Health Service Executive (HSE). A majority are also registered with the N.C.N.A. (National Children’s Nurseries Association) and are approved by the HSE.Within the facility the rooms are divided into age groups. In the baby room the age group is normally three to 12 months. Some creches have a ‘wobbler’ room for children aged from 12 months to two years. The toddler room is for children aged two to three years while the preschool/Montessori room is for children aged three to five year olds. The HSE sets in place staff/children ratios for every creche facility to follow, meaning the number of children in the creche depends on the space in the facility. In full day care, sleeping arrangements and food preparation must meet standards laid down by the Health Service Executive. Most creches now have an ‘in house’ chef who provides healthy nutritious meals for the children. All staff members caring for the children should have experience working in the field and must

have completed a Childcare Course. When a child attends a creche the parents must provide a baby bag with bottles, nappies, baby wipes, change of clothes and anything else your little one will need. So, exactly what does a creche

offer in terms of childcare? The service must provide a stimulating educational environment where children are in a room with their own peer group. The experienced childcare workers will have a structure

for every day. This will include suitable activities for the age group, imaginative play, music, circle time, arts and crafts, indoor and outdoor play. The creche should also have an outdoor play area and indoors should have a separate sleeping area and changing area. Most creche facilities are open 51 weeks a year with opening hours normally from 8am to 6.30pm. The children may attend part time or full time, depending on the needs of the parents.Childcare costs for creches largely depend on the type of childcare you choose, the number of hours and the level of staff training in the creche.Costs per child average between €800 to €1,000 per month. If a second child attends the creche they normally offer a discount. Baby places are in high demand and are more expensive. There are many advantages of sending your child to a creche,

including the fact that the premises will be close to the

family home. In addition, you can go to work safe in the knowledge that your child is being looked after in a secure, supervised and often

educational environment.

Only the best will do for our little angels

AILISH O’HANLON Opticians is located in Newpark Shop-ping Centre. The business, established in 2007, originally traded as Eyedeal Opticians.

It has now been decided to rebrand the business as Ailish O’Hanlon Opticians to empha-sise that it is an independent, Irish business run by a local Kilkenny person.

Ailish explains “I have no-ticed over the last few years that people are becoming more and more conscious of shopping local and sup-porting Irish business. At the same time people expect to receive a good quality per-sonal service. Ailish O’Hanlon Opticians aims to provide such a service.”

Ailish O’Hanlon Opticians of-fers eye examinations at very competitive prices.

Using state of the art equip-ment, Ailish carries out eye examinations in a relaxed at-mosphere, giving each patient plenty of time so as not to feel rushed. The practice also has plenty of free parking directly outside the door and is fully wheelchair accessible.

WHAT STARTED out as an ambitious new charity sportif, the 2012 edition of DID Cycle4Life raised an impressive €151,844 which was used to purchase vital equipment for the ICU in Temple Street Children’s University Hospital. The target for 2013 has been set even higher, says Cian Lynch, Co-founder of DID Cycle4Life. “We are hoping to raise €200,000 to assist in the refurbishment of the top flat, home to some of Ireland’s sickest children, a high percentage of whom are Cystic Fibrosis patients.

Although the care in this ward is second to none, the ward is cramped and in urgent need of re-development in order to keep up with medical standards and requirements. Top Flat has 22 beds for babies and children suffering from all kinds of illnesses imaginable. It has two toilets only between them and no facilities for parents. Parents sleep in a hard chair or sometimes in the bed beside their son or daughter.

Fortunate to have had the support of Dan Martin (Garmin Sharp) in 2012, the organisers are excited about the prospect of having Martin at the start line on May 4, 2013.

“Dan visited the ICU in Temple Street last November, a proud moment for us all. With an even bigger year ahead of Dan and DID Cycle4Life, to

have his commitment to being on the start line will be a huge opportunity for his Irish and International fans to ride out with our best professional in the ProTour. All can also support this worthy cause.” says Ciaran Hallinan.

World classYET another world class rider, Colin Lynch, UCI World Champion in Pursuit and Time Trial, will also be on the

start line. Colin, a member of the Irish Paracycling Team is excited at the prospect of supporting this event.

“I plan on riding the long route and I’ll be encouraging people who want to ride with me to do the same, but will be pushing all riders to sign up, even for the shorter routes.”

This year Temple Street is looking to completely refurbish this ward with three-bed wards with en-suites on all wards,

building a small school room on the ward which will become a parents’ living room and kitchenette area at night and most importantly four single-bed isolation suites with en-suite facilities and a bed for parents.

The support of this year’s Cycle4Life Appeal could completely fund one of the single-bed isolation suites. Isolation suites are vitally important – they are for children who either have an infection or who need to be protected from infection.

Cystic Fibrosis patients must be kept in isolation when they are in hospital so these isolation rooms are really vital in their care. The cost associated with one isolation suite is €200,000. With the current ward, Temple Street sometimes have to close down a four-bed ward to keep one child in isolation.

Colin is determined to achieve their target of €200,000, “With your support Cycle4life will be able to give Temple Street the space it needs to care for their little patients and make cramped, outdated wards a thing of the past. Their patients, their families and their staff deserve nothing less.”
