CHRISTCHURCH :: CHRISTCHURCH CITY

With a population of around 400,000Christchurch, in Canterbury, is the South Island’s largest city, yet much of it has the feel of a small town. Perhaps that’s why it’s known as the Garden City but with the expansive Hagley Park, Botanic Gardens, Port Hills, River Avon and numerous beaches the city certainly has an open, relaxed feel that’s hard to beat.

The heart of Christchurch is without doubt Cathedral Square - this large pedestrian square is often busy with buskers, musicians and market stalls, and of course the magnificent Christchurch Cathedral watches over the activity.

FAST FACTS >> largest city in the South Island, with a population of about 370,00

>> flanked by the Port Hills, which are actually an ancient volcanic crater rim.

>> major departure point for USA, NZ and Italy's Antarctic expeditions and programs.

>> also known as The Garden City

>> inhabited by Maori moa-hunting tribes around 1000 years ago.

>> 1850 - 1851 saw the arrival of the early settlers from England, on board the 'first four ships' into Lyttelton Harbour.

Running through Cathedral Square is the Christchurch tramway. There are five historic trams running, dating back as far as 1910. You can jump on and off the trams as a fun way to explore the centre of Christchurch.

A few minutes stroll from the Cathedral brings you to the willow-lined shores of the River Avon, which meanders through the city. A great way to spend some time is to grab a row boat from the very child-friendly Antigua Boat sheds and drift to Hagley Park and the Botanic Gardens. This is Christchurch's own 'Central Park' with miles of running / inline skating / cycling

paths, picnic spots, playground, pool, lakes, gardens, free summer shows, tennis and netball courts, woodlands, golf course, soccer pitches,

picnic and BBQ spots. Read on to discover Christchurch!

SumnerChristchurch's popular beach location.is only a 20 minute drive from the city centre - yet with soft sand, great surf and swim beach, rocks to climb, promenade, cafés and ice creams, you'll feel like you're really out of town!

If you're keen to have a go at surfing or just want to play on a bodyboard, head towards the Clock Tower and Scarborough Beach. On most days of summer you'll find surf or bodyboard hire, and surf lessons advertised on the promenade. They offer kids' or adults' classes, as well as private lessons.

The promenade is a great spot for strolling or bike/scooter riding, and at the far end you'll find café, toilets, kids' swimming pool and playground. This is also the end with the best surf.

Sumner Village is home to numerous friendly and laid-back cafés and restaurants, the well-known Hollywood Cinema, plus surf shops, supermarket and other local shops to browse. Sumner is flanked by the rugged Port Hills - gateway to Lyttelton Harbour and the Banks Peninsula and also home to numerous walking and mountain bike tracks.

CHRISTCHURCH:: BEACHES

Taylors MistakeFrom Sumner you can pop over Scarborough Hill to the tucked away beach called Taylor's Mistake. It's off the main drag - in fact, the road ends here, at the beach's carpark.

There are toilets, outdoor showers and picnic tables, and a secluded, sandy beach, that often gets the best surf in the area. At busy times it may be manned by surf lifesavers.

New BrightonTen minute's drive from Christchurch City brings you to a sandy beach that literally stretches, unin-terrupted, for miles along the coast. It's a popular beach for dog walkers, kite surfers, blowkarters, horse riders and you'll always find a great spot for a family picnic.

If you head north along the beach, a couple of hours walk will bring you to Spencerville, from where you can carry on walking alongside the Brooklands Lagoon, eventually coming out at the Waimakariri River. Each way will take just over 2 hours.

Brighton PierThe focal point of New Brighton, Brighton Pier stretches over 300m over the sea. It's a popular spot for fishing, and at the near end you'll find the New Brighton library - a haven of comfy cushions and sofas where you can settle in with a magazine or book, overlooking the ocean. There's also cafés and restaurants to hand, along with a large children's playground.

Kite DayTip Top Kite Day welcomes hundreds of kites of all shapes and sizes, and fantastic designs, every year. The summer sky lights up with colour and the creativity of the kites is a must-see! Buskers and street entertainment, stalls and family fun make this a great family outing - look out for the event early in the year, each summer.

Surfing and KiteboardingNew Brighton is a popular location to grab a board and learn to surf, or even take kiteboarding lessons.Sisco's Surf Shop in New Brighton Mall offers surfboard and wetsuit hire as well as kids' and adults' summer surf sessions.Meanwhile South Brighton Surf Club is a favourite location for kite surf lessons. It's more suited to teenagers, as the kites are large and difficult to manage at first. In fact your first lesson is all about learning to fly the kite on the beach! photo: geof wilson, christ

North Brighton and Bottle LakeNorth Brighton beach and surf club take you out of the main town beach area, to a more laid-back spot, with sand dunes leading down to the beach, car parking, toilets, café and large playground with flying fox.The Pegasus Bay walking/biking track follows alongside the beach to the entrance to Bottle Lake Forest. If you stay on the 7km stretch of sandy track you come out at Spencerville Park and the far end of Bottle Lake Forest. This is also the start of Brooklands Lagoon bird sanctuary, with wetland walks and bird viewing platforms.

Bottle Lake Forest Park is a mountain biker's paradise, especially for family or beginner bikers. There are dozens of dedicated biking, walking or horseriding tracks winding through the forest. The far end of Bottle Lake Forest brings you out to Spencerville - a recreation area with BBQs, sheltered picnic spots, paddling pool, flying fox, children's adventure playground, mini golf and the exciting Adrenalin Forest.where you can take a walk in the treetops (see page 10)

Lyttelton and the Harbour Whether you drive over the hill or through the hill (via the 2km long Lyttelton tunnel), you’ll leave the city behind and enter another world as you arrive into Lyttelton Port.

The village is a bustling, friendly place at the mouth of the Lyttelton Harbour (originally called ‘Cook’s Mistake’). You can look across the bay to the Banks Peninsula , while Quail Island sits right in the middle of the harbour (once a leper colony, the island makes for a great day trip and there are regular ferry services that dock there.)

Activities include a visit to the Timeball Station, exploring the famous Lyttelton Saturday markets, or taking a wildlife cruise and looking for dolphins with Black Cat Cruises.

You can also take a ferry over to Diamond Harbour on the Banks Peninsula . See walks and parks section for more on this trip.

If you’ve transport, it’s well worth the drive to follow the road around the Bays. There are lots of great swimming spots, playgrounds and easy walks along the way (check out Corsair, Rapaki, Cass Bay and Governors Bay for a family picnic and swim). NOTE: The harbour bays make ideal swimming spots for families with younger children as the water is generally flat.

Diamond Harbour Diamond Harbour,

Banks Peninsula, makes a great half day or day trip

- take the family and some fishing

rods, swim in the gorgeous bay, have a

picnic, walk or bbq, or enjoy a pub lunch (with

lots of space for kids to play) at Godley House. Ferries depart

Lyttelton and Diamond Harbour throughout the day, half hourly or

hourly, 7 days a week. Booking isn't required and the crossing takes around 8 minutes. Phone: 03 328 9078Prices (one way): Adult $5, Child $2.50www.blackcat.co.nz

Over the Summer (Oct - May) the tours are on Tug Lyttelton and sail at 11am on the second Sunday of the month. During the winter months (June - Sept) the tours are conducted on the Canterbury Cat and sail at 11am on the third Sunday of the month.

Boarding takes place at the public ferry terminal, just off the Oxford Street over bridge in Lyttelton. Bookings are essential. To book a free public port tour, contact Lyttelton Port of Christchurch reception on 328-8198.

Lyttelton Timeball Station Like a Scottish castle dominating the scenic port of Lyttelton, the Timeball Station is one of the few of its kind left in the world. From 1876 to 1934 a ball dropped from its mast on its stone tower, signalling the time to ships in Lyttelton Harbour. The Timeball Station is today one of only five in the world known to be still in working order. It is a rare piece of maritime history, fabulously restored and boasting spectacular views over Lyttelton Harbour. Watch the Timeball drop from practically anywhere in Lyttelton at 1pm everyday. The Station is open to visitors daily.

Quail Island Recreation ReserveSpend a half-day exploring Quail Island, right in the middle of Lyttelton Harbour. The island was used as a leprosy colony and a quarantine station by the early European settlers. With secluded inlets, safe swimming beaches and lovely walks and picnic areas, why not take your lunch and swimming costumes for a great family day out?If you walk round to the far (west) side of the island you'll look down on the eight ship wrecks that are partly submerged there. Toilets and changing rooms on the island. Black Cat run regular departures throughout the summer - ask about their treasure hunt!. Phone: 03 328 9078Prices (return): Ad $20, Chi $10 (child is 5 to 15) Family Pass: 2 ad + 2 ch, second child goes free.www.blackcat.co.nz

Explore the harbour...Take a drive round to Diamond Harbour (26km) or as far as the harbour head at Teddinton, then over Gebbies Pass to Akaroa and the Banks Peninsula. Here are some family spots on the way....

Magazine Bay - explore the marina and boat yards, take a water side stroll, visit the Torpedo Boat Museum (Summer - Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday 1pm - 3pm Winter - Saturday, Sunday 1 - 3pm.)

Corsair Bay - a favourite summer spot - beautiful swimming, pontoon, sandy beach, walking track, playground, toilets and parking.

Cass Bay - good launch spot for kayaks (or look out for local kayak demo days here), good swimming, playground, toilets, parking and walking track to Corsair Bay.

Rapaki Bay - beach, jetty, easy parking.

Governors Bay - long jetty, good for fishing when the tide is high, very popular walking/biking track, Governors Bay hotel, serving lunches, dinners and ice creams, She Café and Chocolaterie.

Allandale and Living Springs- Allandale, near the head of the lake, features a picnic reserve with toilets, and a walk/bike track joining it to Governors Bay. Living Springs, across the road, is growing in popularity with keen mountain bikers, although the tracks require fitness and some experience.

Teddington - Turn off here to head over Gebbies Pass to the Banks Peninsula.

Orton Bradley Park, Charteris BayPicnic & BBQ areas, walking tracks, horse treks, golf course, tennis, historical buildings, working farm, camping and magnificent harbour views.

Diamond Harbour - great for picnics and BBQs, walks and swimming. There's a shop and café, and the Godley House Restaurant. Horse trekking nearby in Orton Bradley Park, or great kayaking bay round the hill at Purau Bay.

WALKS:: PICNICS AND PARKS

Bottle Lake Forest Park Mountain Bike / Walking TrailsThis Kidz Go favourite has it all! Immerse yourself in miles of sandy beaches, walking tracks galore, superb forest mountain bike trails that are easy yet varied and fun, mountain bike terrain park and a recreation area with adventure playground, flying fox, paddling pool, tennis courts, sandy volleyball and BBQ pits. (Spencer Park)

The flat trails are ideal for baby buggies but this area really comes into it’s own as

a perfect place to take the kids mountain biking. Try the Pegasus Bay track which skirts

the forest, following the beach from Spencer Park to New Brighton’s North Shore. Otherwise

discover the maze of fun, winding mountain bike trails that criss-cross the forest. It’s hard to get lost for more than a few moments and you can pick up maps of the forest from the information centre at Spencer Park (Off Lower Styx Road.)Bike Grade: easy Alternative access and recreation area off Waitikiri Drive.

Macleans Island Mountain Bike TrailsPart of the Waimakariri River Regional Park, the MacLeans Track is a well-built, smooth 10km mountain bike track (now with several kilometers of extra track variations) that is ideal for family biking. There are plenty of twists and turns, bumps and small ups and downs, to make it great fun, without being too technical. Ideal for beginner bikers or family groups! Plenty of parking at the start of the track, and there's also a cabin open at weekends, selling bottled water, drinks, muffins and other goodies. You can even rent bikes (for both kids and adults) and helmets, at the start of the track (weekends only, or by arrangement from On Your Bike - 03 348 1738). Bike Grade: easy Opposite Orana Wildlife Park, McLeans Island Road, off Johns Road, Christchurch

NORTH CHRISTCHURCHSpencer ParkPicnic / Mountain Bike / Walking TrailsSpencer Park is just 15 minutes drive north from the city centre, right on the beach at Spencerville. Facilities include: BBQ pits, sandy volleyball court, tennis, mini golf, adventure playground, flying fox, toddlers' pool and tons of running around space. It's just a stone's throw from a sandy beach and the popular Bottle Lake Forest Park - a perfect forest for walks and family-suited mountain bike trails. Spencer Park is also right opposite the fantastic Adrenalin Forest - a great outdoor climbing adventure for kids and adults(see our activities section for more information.) If you want to stay on-site, right next door is Spencer Beach Holiday Park. Check our accommodation section for more on this great family accommodation.Heyders Rd, off Lwr Styx Rd, Christchurch

SOUTH CHRISTCHURCHHalswell Quarry Park- A unique, 55 hectare family-orientated park on the outskirts of Christchurch. The disused quarry makes an interesting (and fenced off) stroll, with its striking amphitheatre of steep, jagged rock walls. There’s plenty of grassy spots and picnic areas to spread out plus walking and bike tracks that wander through woods and orchards. Toilets and water on-site. To get there from Halswell, take Kennedys Bush Road south toward the hills. A marked turnoff at the base of the foothills leads into the park. A lake on the left is surrounded by the new plantings of the Sister Cities' Gardens, and on the right, the abandoned buildings of the quarry are visible. Note: Dog park located here

AROUND THE PORT HILLSVictoria ParkPicnic / Walks / Mountain Bike TrailsAccess to this extensive area of bush is from Dyers Pass Road, opposite the end of Colombo Street. Playground and picnic spot and numerous walking trails, all overlooking the whole city with a backdrop of the Southern Alps. Victoria Park runs into Bowenvale Recreation Reserve, and between them they feature some of the Port Hills best Mountain Bike tracks.Note: Dog park located here Bike Grade: moderate to hard

Barnett Park - RedcliffsJust off the main road, Moncks Bay, follow the track that sidles along Barnett Park. It climbs steadily, but not too steeply up towards the Port Hills, until you readh a large cave. From here there are fantastic views back to the sea and the Southern Alps. You can make a loop by carrying on past the cave, and following the path back down the otehr side of Barnett Park.Walk Grade: moderate Duration 1 hour

The Groynes Picnic ReserveParklands galore – 85 hectares of reserve, streams, lakes, playground, fishing, BBQ spots and walking trails. Just 15 minutes drive from the city centre The Groynes is a perfect place to picnic, feed the ducks or go for a walk. All trails are flat and there are short walks that follow the lakes and streams. Otherwise follow signs for the Waimairi Walkway for an easy 1 – 2 hour return stroll. Fishing is allowed and is definitely kid-friendly – restricted to under 17s.Look out for organised Family Days and Kids' Fishing Days. Note: Dog parks and agility coure located hereOff Johns Road, near Christchurch Airport

CENTRAL CHRISTCHURCHHagley Park Picnic / Cycle and Fitness Trails / SportsExpansive parkland (around 160 hectares) in central Christchurch, Hagley Park public reserve is totally flat and a perfect escape from city life, without leaving the city. Drive in off Rolleston Avenue – there’s plenty of parking, a licensed café and information centre. Nearby is a large playground, lake and extensive gardens. There are walking, cycling or rollerblading tracks throughout the park and indoor/outdoor Botanic Gardens. Numerous recreation areas provide tennis courts, rugby fields, fitness track, netball courts and cricket pavilion. Look out for open air concerts during summer. Christchurch City Center Main entrances off Rolleston Avenue or Riccarton Avenue.Riccarton House and BushAn inner city haven – historic house with café and toilets on-site, situated on the river bank in extensive grounds. The Riccarton Bush walk is an easy 20 minute walk through protected, ancient native forest – it’s undisturbed and is an interesting window into how Christchurch would have looked to the first settlers. In fact it’s the sole remnant of the kahikatea forest that clothed much of the coastal floodplains. The sound of birds in this pocket of forest is significant. Other than this there’s Riccarton House and Dean’s Cottage to wander through, plus lots of grass area for the kids to play.

:: AROUND THE PORT HILLS Taylors Mistake to Boulder BayFrom the carpark at Taylors Mistake, follow the cliff path around the hills. The path is quite wide and in good condition, but there are steep drop offs, so keep small children close as you round the bays. After about half an hour you come out above Christchurch's most secluded communit - Boulder Bay! You can descend down to the beach, which is lined with cute fishing and holiday baches. This is a real little haven where time has stood still - it's right on the point near Godley Head, but the rough seas, while making swimming impossible, add to the charm and atmosphere. Come back the way you came, or carry on up to Godley Head, and follow one of the higher tracks that skirts the Port Hills back to Taylore Mistake.Walk grade: easy, 1 to 2 hours

Godley Head Tunnels and Gun EmplacementsThis headland is a breathtaking coastal location, with sheer 120 metre-high cliffs towering above the Pacific Ocean. Built in 1939, the Godley Head WWII coastal defence battery is ranked in the top ten New Zealand coastal defence heritage sites.

From the carpark, either take the cliff path that zig zags downhill, to the tunnels which are not far from sea level. Kids will love the adventure as you feel your way through, with just small cut windows along the way to let in light.Otherwise, stay on the cliff and follow signs to the gun emplacements. Lots of history to explore.

Godley Head gun emplacements

Greenwood ParkMountain Bike / Walking TrailsEntrance to this 'park' is located on the Summit Road, between the Gondola and Sumner. As you drive up towards the summit from the Sumner direction you'll pass a wooded area on your right and a gate signed Greenwood Park. There's a not-too-steep track that is wide and easy for buggies. Views are panoramic - from one point you can see the Southern Alps, Christchurch City, Sumner, Lyttelton Harbour and the Banks Peninsula! Great for unusual scenic photo angles! The track comes out overlooking Lyttelton township at some old World War II gun enplacements (great for sheltered picnics!). There's also mountain bike tracks through Greenwood Park, which are well-marked, crossing the walking path about half way along. Summit Road, close to Evans Pass. Walk grade: moderate, 40 minutes each way.Bike grade: moderate.

AROUND THE HARBOUR / PORT HILLS Cass Bay - Magazine Bay walkwayThis easy waterside stroll winds from the Cass Bay playground back to Lyttelton. The path me-anders round tiny inlets, including Corsair Bay – a favourite swimming spot with changing rooms and picnic area. You come out at Magazine Bay – follow the marina from here into Lyttelton or take the road or walking path back to Cass Bay. Walk grade: easy, 30 minutes each way.

Diamond Harbour - Stoddarts Point WalkwayIf arriving by ferry turn left from the wharf and follow the pathway nearest the sea, rather then walking up the road. Follow the flat path alongside the cliff edge, through natural bush. You come out in the centre of Diamond Harbour village, near Stoddart’s cottage. Features: This walk has a stunning outlook across the harbour and there’s lots of woodland to play in. However, during the first few minutes of the walk the path takes you very close to steep drop offs. Keep children with you for the first section and take extra care if biking. Walk grade: easy, 30 minutes duration

Crater Rim WalkwayDon't miss a trip along the top of the Port Hills, called the Summit Road - you can drive up from Sumner or Lyttelton, Governor's Bay or from the top of Colombo Street. Otherwise the best walking tracks are the bridle paths from Heathcote Valley or from the Lyttelton side (takes about 45 minutes one way).

The Port Hills are all part of the extinct Lyttelton Volacao, and the Crater Rim Walkway literally takes you around the rim of the ancient volcano!

There are lots of walking tracks sign posted along the Summit Road, all part of the Crater Rim W a l k w a y .

21

Take a stroll, walk the dog, venture along a mountain bike single track, and enjoy the views over the harbour and Banks Peninsula one way, and Christchurch City, Canterbury Plains and Southern Alps the other.

The top of the Port Hills are very exposed to winds from any direction, so take a wind proof or warm top with you, even if the weather is calm in town. There is one café on the Summit Road, called Sign of the Kiwi, at the top of the Dyers Pass Road.
