Therapy with horses has been around for ages. At 7Star Therapeutic Riding Center, you will find this ageold treatment still in use today. Children and Adults withhandicaps such as autism or attention deficit disorderoften struggle to communicate, but put them with horsesand they can achieve so much. Equine Assisted Therapyhelps with physical and mental disorders. This kind oftherapy inspires patients to learn about themselves, otherpeople, and interacting with the world.

At 7 Star there are 2 highlytrained instructors who arecertified through NARHA(North American Riding forthe Handicapped Assoc-iation,) who dedicatethemselves to the health oftheir patients.

Equine-assisted therapyprovides an alternativeform of therapy that cannotbe obtained through

conven-tional therapy. “The gait of the horse mimicsthat of a human.” Says Faith Elliot (Executive Director).“Through the motion of the horse, clients develop coremuscle strength, and stimulation of brain patterns, which

Equine Therapy

improves balance and coordination.” Clients learn toconcentrate and focus on riding, which helps withsequencing, and learning to follow verbal instructions.

There are 5 therapy horsestotal at 7 Star each of whichhave something different andunique to offer individualpatients. As we were walkingthrough the stalls beingintroduced to the horses wecame to DOVE. This calmbeautiful creature walks overin a slow delicate manner. This loving mare is aneighteen year old Tennessee Walker. Dove has manyallergies and is diagnosed with COPD. With a specialdiet this mare’s asthmatic symptoms are eaisilymaintained. Dove has been on a break from therapy forthe past two months, but will hopefully rejoin the herd inNovember. “She is my favorite” says Elliot.

Next we have SMOOTHIE Also known as Smokin’ LenaBar, this horse is a 1984 gelding. He has been usedexclusively in cutting competition where he demonstrateda high degree of willingness and a hard “stop.” Smoothiewas an orphan. Maybe his explains why he likes childrenand people.

TALK is a 29 year old Gelding who is just gorgeous tolook at. He is a 25 year veteran of the cutting arena andhas participated in several large cattle gatherings. Hehas been a babysitter to many children, demonstratingthe unique versatility of his American Quarter Horsebreeding.

Artist Info: Lesley Ingham ~ I have always loved art. I have always loved creating, and I have always loved pretty things, but I had never experienced the kind of inspiration that I have now with my two precious children: Allison (3), and Kahlon (1 1/2). From the moment I knew I was expecting Alli, I began thinking of beautiful theme ideas for her nursery... and we ended up with a spring time type of theme, since her birthday is in April. Butterflies and bunnies in light pastels and sheer draperies is what I came up with. I beamed with joy each time I walked into her room! It turns out that her room matched her - light and blonde-headed, and pretty!
