Answer: Hi, Mikala! Great job; playing sports is so

GOOD for you! Here are five simple things you can

do to avoid getting hurt…

1. WEAR the right equipment to protect your body,

like a helmet for football, softball, and bicycling, or

shin guards for soccer.

2. STRRRETCHHH! Always stretch and warm up

before you play a sport.

3. KNOW the rules of the game and follow them.

4. WATCH OUT for other players and ALWAYS be

a good sport.

5. SIT OUT and don’t try to play if you do get hurt

or injured.

Play safe, Mikala, and have fun! If you have a question for

Doc Wayne, just email him at [email protected]

Ask Doc Wayne

I LOVE playing lots of

sports, but I don’t want

to get hurt and have to

wear a cast like my

friend Brandon. What do

I do? — Mikala, Age 8

The letters SPF stand for Sun Protection Factor and the number tells you how long it will protect you from sunburn. Look for 30 or higher.

A PEAcHY Summer Treat

Spring and summer can mean sunburn and bug bites when you’re playing outside, so you need to protect yourself. No, you don’t have to wrap up like a mummy, but you should use sunscreen and insect repellent (bug spray for your skin) to keep you comfortable. Ask an adult to get you sunscreen with a high SPF.Remember!

• Use sunscreen first, THEN the insect repellant• Put repellent on every two hours, more often if you go swimming.

Lets take a summer staycation!Itching to go on a family vacation this summer? Avoid that long car ride. Tell your folks to enjoy all the great places right here in our area. Check out these nearby locations for fun “Staycation” ideas:Cliffs of the Neuse State Park — Spectacular cliff views, paddling — www.ncparks.govHerman Park — Tennis, picnic area, historic park house, playground — www.greatergoldsboro.comWaynesborough Historical Village — A taste of North Carolina History — www.waynesboroughhistoricalvillage.com

In North Carolina, one in four kids under 18 is overweight. When kids are too heavy, they miss out on an awful lot of fun in life.

If you have an overweight friend, ask him or her to join you in some outdoor activities: Play basketball, ride bikes, rollerblade, run, or just walk!

If you get your friends involved in outdoor activities, “trimming down” is something that will happen while you’re busy having fun!
