Those bright, juicy cherries of course!
Choose the healthier option, This or ThaT! Once you finish, turn
the chart upside down to see if you chose wisely!
Do you get a runny nose or watery eyes or
a scratchy throat during springtime? If so, you
might have allergies (say AL-er-jees). Dust and
pollen during the spring season can cause those
annoying symptoms.
If your allergies are keeping you from playing
outside, you may need to visit a doctor, who can
give you medicine to make you feel better.
Things you can do to help:
➜ Avoid triggers (things that make you sneeze or
make your eyes scratchy) — stuff like pollen,
dust, or pet dander.
➜ After playing outside, take a bath or
wash your face and hands.
➜ If you can’t take a bath or wash up,
change clothes when you come
inside.
Don’t let allergies ruin your outdoor fun!

Is Your Sitter Qualified?
With summer coming, parents will need a qualified babysitter, but how do you determine if your sitter measures up?
Find a sitter who is comfortable with children the ages of your kids. A teenager who is great with preschoolers may not be comfortable with infants. Watch the interaction between a potential sitter and your kids.
Better QualifiedA sitter who knows CPR and emergency first aid is worth his or her weight in gold. Completion of a certified babysitting course sponsored by organizations such as Wayne Memorial Hospital, the Red Cross, YMCA, or a Safe Sitter® program is also a huge plus.
You’re entrusting the most valuable things in the world to a babysitter — your children.
So do your homework! This ThaT
WCPS students are donning gardening gloves in an effort to promote a healthy tomorrow. Last year, the Wayne School of Engineering developed a school garden as part of an Earth & Environmental Science class project. The project was
so successful that it sprouted a school-wide cross-curricular initiative centering on the question, “Why is there famine in a globally technological society?”
This year, WCPS teachers are addressing that question as part of their curriculum. Earth & Environmental Science students are taking field trips to a local downtown community garden, which provides them
with first-hand urban farming experiences. These students have also learned about recycling, using worms for creating compost, and beekeeping. Math students learned how genetics are used in farming. English students read literature addressing social and ethical issues regarding third-world countries.
The school hopes to have students work directly with elementary students at the community garden, serving as mentors and teaching them about urban farming practices.
Grow a garden!➜ Make your own growing containers from egg cartons.
(Poke a few holes in the bottom for drainage!)➜ Put a tray under the container to prevent messes. ➜ For soil, buy some “sterile seed-starting”mix.➜ Easy-to-grow seeds are lettuce, broccoli and peppers. ➜ Plant the seeds to the depth each seed packet tells you.➜ For good lighting, place the growing container and tray
by a sunny window. ➜ Water the seeds daily with a spray bottle.➜ Label your seeds with a popsicle stick placed in
each container.
Once the seeds become small plants (3-4 leaves), take the seedlings outdoors and plant them in your garden.
Happy growing!

Get Bullies to Back Off

a new health series:
Bullies may make you feel
scared. But if you know
what to do, you can get a
bully to back off.
Ignore the bully. Bullies
are trying to get attention.
Don’t give them any.
Feel good about yourself.
When you feel good about
yourself, it’s harder for a bully
to make you feel bad.
Stand up for yourself. Act brave, even if you don’t
feel brave.
Tell the bully “no” and walk away. Sometimes
it’s just that simple.
Stick together. Walk with a friend. It’s harder to
bully two people than one.
Tell an adult. Talking to your parents or teachers
about a bully doesn’t make you a tattle-tale. Bullying
is wrong.

Answer: Hi, Mikala! Great job; playing sports is so
GOOD for you! Here are five simple things you can
do to avoid getting hurt…
1. WEAR the right equipment to protect your body,
like a helmet for football, softball, and bicycling, or
shin guards for soccer.
2. STRRRETCHHH! Always stretch and warm up
before you play a sport.
3. KNOW the rules of the game and follow them.
4. WATCH OUT for other players and ALWAYS be
a good sport.
5. SIT OUT and don’t try to play if you do get hurt
or injured.
Play safe, Mikala, and have fun! If you have a question for
Doc Wayne, just email him at [email protected]

The letters SPF stand for Sun Protection Factor and the number tells you how long it will protect you from sunburn. Look for 30 or higher.
A PEAcHY Summer Treat
Spring and summer can mean sunburn and bug bites when you’re playing outside, so you need to protect yourself. No, you don’t have to wrap up like a mummy, but you should use sunscreen and insect repellent (bug spray for your skin) to keep you comfortable. Ask an adult to get you sunscreen with a high SPF.Remember!
• Use sunscreen first, THEN the insect repellant• Put repellent on every two hours, more often if you go swimming.

In North Carolina, one in four kids under 18 is overweight. When kids are too heavy, they miss out on an awful lot of fun in life.
If you have an overweight friend, ask him or her to join you in some outdoor activities: Play basketball, ride bikes, rollerblade, run, or just walk!
If you get your friends involved in outdoor activities, “trimming down” is something that will happen while you’re busy having fun!
