From the Desk of the Executive Director / CEO I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend. I don’t know about you, but I am ready for football weather. Things are back in full swing after the summer for Head Start and KATS. We are in the process of preparing for our annual agency audit by our independent auditor. Our ARRA Weatherization Pro-gram is winding down in all five of our counties. The new stimulus funding greatly increased the number of houses weatherized with new higher income guidelines and is allowing us to spend more money on each house. We have also been able to purchase six weath-erization vehicles and upgrade to new weatherization equipment. This funding will be ending this month. We had an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 for the new Stella Linney house in Wilburton. This new HUD funded house is a great addition to our group home pro-gram.

We are having our Third Annual KATS Bus Roadeo in Stigler on Saturday, September 29, 2012. Having the Bus Roadeo on a Saturday allows most of our drivers to be able to participate and bring their families. The training, food, and fellowship will be great. We hope you can join us.

Congratulations are in order for Royce Alverson and Amy Fair who received their National CCAP Certification at a ceremony in New York City on August 22nd. Larry Hall and Kenneth Barnhart also received the renewal of their National CCAP Certifications. We have twelve CCAP’s in our agency and two more are working towards certification in 2013.

her clients but by her co-workers. Stella started to work for KI BOIS Community Action in May 1980 and retired in September 2001 and was one of the original Developmental Disabilities (DD) staff. Claudia Jeffrey, Latimer County Director, who was privi-leged to work with Stella for many years, stated, “This home will certainly honor the memory of Stella who was so instrumental in the lives of the clients under her supervision.”

According to KI BOIS Community Action Director of Operations Larry Hall, “The 3,100 square foot home located on a hillside lot will accommodate six individuals. The floor plan will consist of seven bedrooms, one for each client and one for a staff member, commons area, kitchen, dining area, utility room, screened-in back porch and a safe room. This house is also unique in location….if Stella were alive she could just walk across the street and visit the six individuals who will now call the Stella Linney House home.” Hall also stated, “The staff will be supervised by Group Home Director Natalie Green. Green has worked for the DD Program for over 26 years and will do a great job at this home.”

The Haskell and Latimer Tobacco Project (HALT) recently had the opportunity to attend the 2012 National Conference on To-bacco and Health at the Kansas City Convention Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Coordinator Denice Daniels, Assistant Coordina-tor Tiffany Boyles and Coalition members Sandie Rutherford, Smart Start and Tammy Randazzo with Turning Point attended the conference August 15-August 17, 2012.

This year’s conference was titled “A New Era of Tobacco Control: Policy, Regu-lations and Prevention”. The purpose of the National Conference on Tobacco or Health is to help improve and sustain the effectiveness and reach of tobacco control programs and activities in the United States.

Keynote speakers included Dr. Howard Koh, MD, MPH, US Department of Health and Human Services; Dr. Thomas Frieden, MD, MPH, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Dr. Lawrence Deyton, MD, MSPH, FDA Center for Tobacco Products; Frances Harding, Director, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, SAM-HSA; and Dr. Erik Augustson, Ph.D., MPH, National Cancer Institute and Dr. Peb-bles Fagan, PhD, MPH, University of Hawaii Cancer Center; Dr. Jeffrey Levi, PhD, Trust for America's Health; Dr. Patricia Henderson, MD, MPH, Black Hills Center for American Indian Health; Dr. Jeannette Noltenius, MA, PhD, National Latino To-bacco Control Network (NLTCN).

Some of the issues addressed at the conference were new trends in tobacco prod-ucts, the pros and cons of E-Cigarettes for tobacco cessation and how tobacco control is going to affect the future of our nation as a whole. One of our favorite activities was meeting Ms. Terrie Hall. Terrie is a 51 year old cancer survivor from North Carolina. She is featured in one of the CDC anti-tobacco ads going through her morning routine, which includes putting in her teeth, putting on her wig and installing her hands-free electrolarynx. These ads were quite controversial, however, the calls to the tobacco helpline tripled nationwide when they came out. She was a delight to meet. The staff also enjoyed some “downtime” including plenty of shopping and good food including some of that famous Kansas City BBQ.

Terrie’s Story……………………... In high school, Terrie was a pretty cheerleader who competed on the cheer circuit. Her father was a smoker, and with more and more of her friends smoking, Terrie soon found herself lighting up in social settings. “It was the cool thing to do,” she says. She would come to smoke up to two packs a day and felt the adverse effects of tobacco from as early as 25 years old — a sore throat that never seemed to go away. In 2001, at the age of 40, Terrie Hall was diagnosed with oral cancer. As she recalls, “I had a sore in my mouth and had to go through all these grueling radiation treatments. It was awful.” Terrie continued to smoke throughout her radiation treatments. “I didn't think I had to quit. The radiation was getting rid of the cancer, so I could still smoke,” she says. Later that same year, Terrie was diagnosed with throat cancer. It was then that she quit for good. The doctors informed her that they would need to remove her larynx. “It's hard to wrap your mind around cancer, and when they told me that they were going to remove my voice box, I thought I would never speak again,” says Terrie. Today, at 51, Terrie speaks often with the help of her electrolarynx. She works tirelessly to edu-cate young people about the dangers and consequences of tobacco use. She's as active as she can be, lending her time and support to several health and advocacy organizations. “I'm busier now than be-fore I got cancer,” Terrie says. Unfortunately, cancer has returned numerous times since she was first diagnosed, and she continues to battle it today.
