KHS HIGHLIGHTER Vol. 16 No. 1 Summer, 2008 Principal's Column Hello, Kennett Students and Families! I hope that your summer is go- ing well. The high school adminis- tration and staff have been diligently preparing for your arrival/return as we move closer to the start of the 2008-2009 school year. Upon your arrival, we ask that you become familiar with a few changes. What has been tradition- ally referred to as Homeroom, will now be called Advisory Period. Our advisory period will still start our school day, as was the case in the past. Also note that the student day will now BEGIN at 7:40 with the first bell ringing at 7:35. Furthermore, we would like to draw your attention to a few changes in regard to the high school’s gradu- ation project. We will be provid- ing you with a copy of the revised Graduation Project Requirements effective with the Class of 2011. The major changes in the revised document focus on the research paper, internship, and community service hours. There will be meet- ings in the fall with students and parents (in the evening) to explain these changes, as well as gradua- tion project requirements. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dr. Tamargo or any administrator. We truly look forward to your return to school and are eager to begin another terrific school year at Kennett High School! Best regards, Michael Barber R. David Cates, a graduating senior from Kennett High School has been named a Jefferson Scholar, one of only 33 listed among the Class of 2012. In accepting this designation at the University of Virginia, Cates turned down numerous other offers including a full scholarship to Harvard University. Asked about his choice, Dave noted that the choice was difficult but that the opportunities offered and paid for through the Jefferson Scholarship, including the ability to travel and to study abroad, were what swayed him. According to James H. Wright, Jefferson Scholars Foundation President, “To be selected a Jefferson Scholar, a student must excel in the Jeffersonian qualities of leadership, scholarship, and citizenship. The Foundation seeks modern-day Thomas Jeffersons, individuals who show promise of becoming tomorrow’s leaders and whose talents and energies will benefit the University community.” The Jefferson Scholars Foundation is in its 27 th year of service to the Uni- versity of Virginia. With an endowment of $207 million, the Foundation offers the Jefferson Scholarship which includes 8 semesters of tuition, fees, room and board, and personal expenses. For an out-of-state student this amounts to a stipend for the coming school year of $38,125. The Jefferson Scholars Foundation in its release of information noted, “Throughout its twenty-eight year history the goal of the Jefferson Scholars Foundation has been to attract to the Grounds of the University the most promis- ing students in the world, students who possess exceptional talent in leadership and scholarship, and who have the potential to make significant contributions to the University as students and to the world at large as alumni. In Richard David Cates the Foundation has found an individual with such potential." Highlighting his accomplishments, the Foundation noted that Dave was an accomplished student who excelled in all areas of Kennett High School’s curricu- lum. Dave was a member of the National Honor Society and an AP Scholar with Distinction. He was president of the Student Council and for two years he was editor-in-chief of the school newspaper. Dave served as captain of the Academic Team and as assistant stage manager for the stage crew. He attended the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference and received numerous academic awards. Captain of both club and school soccer teams, Dave also volunteered with TOP- Soccer, a soccer program for children with physical or mental disabilities. He was the Wendy’s High School Heisman nominee, received the SCCL Scholar-Athlete Award, played on the Delaware state champion team in 2007, and on the first team for Chester and Montgomery Counties. He was also named a High School Scholar All-American, awarded for excellence both on the soccer team and in the classroom, by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and Adidas. Kennett High School is one of the 2950 schools eligible to present candi- dates. Eligible schools are determined by their records of course offerings and academic rigor as evidenced by SAT/ACT scores, AP course offerings and scores, and numerous other factors. R.

The Foundation seeks modern-day Thomas Jeffersons, individuals who show promise of becoming tomorrow’s leaders and whose talents and energies will benefit the University community.”

Highlighting his accomplishments, the Foundation noted that Dave was an accomplished student who excelled in all areas of Kennett High School’s curricu-lum. The gradu-ates were welcomed as alumni by association member and retiring at-tendance clerk Sandra Miller, a member of the Class of 1970. Dr. Michael Barber, Prin-cipal, ended the gradu-ation ceremony with his closing remarks. IT’S NEVER TOO EARLYTO START PLANNING …

... for the Kennett High School After Prom, that is! This year’s date is April 24, 2009. While that sounds like a lot of time, it takes months of planning, fund raising and construction to get it all done. Although we have many volunteers who stay with us year after year, we need more parents to be involved. No special talents are needed – just a desire to make prom night a fun, special and SAFE one for all of our children.

Please watch for a notice for our first meeting and fund raiser in the Fall. If you would like more informa-tion, or would like to be added to our mailing list, please contact Ellen Tetu at [email protected] or 610-274-2225.

Excerptsfrom

Commencement Speeches

Sallie PernickParents and family - turn and look upon the sea of graduates. Be proud. They are your proof of success and contribution to this world.

Julian RoseI could not have hoped to grow up with a more colorful group of people than the Class of 2008.

Genevieve BarrettAlthough it is impossible to gauge the depths of the challenges before us, the past four years together at Kennett have prepared us to handle whatever changes may come our way and to keep our heads held high as we make our mark on the world.

Allison RozsitsNext year, no matter where we go, we’ll now have the faith in ourselves to take risks and meet challenges. Although we won’t have the same safety net of teachers we can run to or peers we can call at midnight for help, we’ll be able to count on ourselves.

Madeline WilliamsWe at Kennett have all the opportuni-ties, and more, that students at other high schools have, but our uniqueness lies in the removal of the boundaries of predictability.

Ruben GaytanWe do not all speak the same language or eat the same foods, but we know how to embrace our diversity, and with that ability, we have made a strong com-munity... We have made a difference to Kennett High School. We have made a difference to this community. Now, we must go out into the world and make a difference for others.

Kennett High SchoolStudent Assistance Program

KITThe primary responsibilities of

Kennett High School are two-fold, to provide academic training for students allowing them to compete successfully in the career field of their choice and to provide socializa-tion opportunities to give them skills to successfully build relationships which enrich their lives. If a student is in crisis, that student may not learn. Schools are the only institution through which all young people must pass, thus giving school personnel a unique opportunity to identify and to support those abusing substances and/or experiencing disabling emo-tional distress.

The Kennett Student Assistance Program is designed as a prevention and intervention system. The goal is to help students and families identify and utilize community resources in-creasing their chances for academic and personal success. The Kennett Intervention Team (KIT) is commit-ted to assuring that nothing interferes with that process.

What is the Student Assistance Pro-gram (SAP)?

The Commonwealth of Penn-sylvania’s Student Assistance Pro-gram (SAP), which is administered by the PA Department of Education’s Division of Student and Safe School Services in partnership with the De-partment of Health’s Bureau of Drug and Alcohol Programs, and the PA Department of public Welfare’s Of-fice of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, is designed to assist school personnel in identifying issues including alcohol, tobacco, other drugs, and mental health issues which pose a barrier to a student’s success. The primary goal of the Student As-sistance Program (SAP) is to help students overcome these barriers in order that they may achieve, remain in school, and advance.

The KIT team is the student assistance program team at Kennett High School. The goal is to help stu-dents and families identify and utilize school and community resources increasing their chances for academic and personal success.

The team is comprised of pro-fessionally trained KCSD staff and a liaison from a community alcohol and drug agency. The team receives refer-rals from parents, teachers and students. Referral sources, as well as information shared with the team members, are held in confidence. The team functions by gathering information about student’s performance in school and working with parents to formulate a plan to help those students be more successful.

Intervention plans may include accessing community and school re-sources that may be of assistance to the student’s and his or her family.

Colleges will have the opportunity to schedule visitations at various times throughout the school day. Students can view those times in the Guid-ance Calendar section of the Guidance Web site. Students wishing to visit with a college representative must first obtain permission and a pass from the teacher if meeting with the college representative during their class time.

The PSAT is especially important for juniors who plan to attend a post-secondary institution because it is considered a practice test for the SAT. The PSAT/NMSQT is also the best route for consideration for the National Merit Scholarship Program, the National Achievement Scholarship for Outstanding Negro Students, and the National Recognition Program for Hispanic Students. More information regarding the test and its administration will be sent home at a later date.

You may also register by mail or by phone at (800) SAT-SCORE. A limited number of registration materials are available in the Guidance Office. At no extra cost, students are given the opportunity to send their SAT scores to four colleges of their choice when they register to take the SAT’s. This is important because SAT scores are NOT included on transcripts to colleges. Please ensure that your child gives careful thought to this step of the registration process and that he/she completes it thoroughly.

COLLEGE INFORMATION NIGHTAre you overwhelmed by the college application process? Where can you acquire accurate infor-mation? What exactly are colleges looking for? Mark your calendars for the College Informa-tion Night that will be held at Kennett High School on November 20th at 7:00 pm. The college selection process, application procedures and helpful resources will be discussed. We hope to see you there!

APPLICATIONS TO POST HIGH SCHOOL INSTITUTIONSYou can help speed applications on their way.

• You need to obtain and complete the application either by submitting it on-line, downloading the application or requesting a paper application from the college. If you do not apply on line and would like the Guidance Office to mail your application, it should be completed, signed, and brought in with a check or money order; a signed release form; any attachments such as essays and/or a list of activities; and a stamped, addressed envelope. It is not necessary to put a return address in the upper left-hand corner of the envelope.

• If a recommendation is needed, the student should make arrangements with the writer and provide him /her with a stamped, addressed envelope.

• Students must also arrange to have their SAT scores sent to the schools in which they are applying. This can be done at no extra cost while initially registering to take the SAT test. It can also be accomplished at a later time by visiting the College Board web site (listed above) or by obtaining an additional score report form from the Guidance Office. This is an important step for students to complete because the Guidance Office can no longer supply this information to colleges.

• The student’s transcript and related materials are mailed directly to the institution. It is important that deadlines are noted and all individuals and offices are given enough time to prepare their materials in a careful manner. Ten days school days is a reasonable amount of time for materials to be processed. Please note that the school district will be closed November 27 through December 1 for Thanksgiving. Applications should be in the Guidance Office by November 1 to allow time for processing for December 1 deadlines. Please note that the school district will be closed December 24, through January 4 for the Winter Holiday. Therefore, applications with early January deadlines must be in the Guidance Office by December 1 to allow time for processing.

ATHLETICS IN COLLEGEAre you planning to participate in Division I or II athletics in college? If so, the NCAA Initial Eligibility Form must be completed during the senior year. The NCAA Clearinghouse will certify the eligibility of students for any program in the country. Students need to download, print out and bring in to the Guidance Office the on-line Release Copy 1 and Release Copy 2 transcript request sheets. Release Copy 1 transcript request sheet will be sent to the NCAA Clearinghouse with your student’s transcript at the time it is given to the Guidance Office. Release Copy 2 transcript request sheet should also be given to the Guidance Office at the same time. This authorizes the Guidance Office to send your student’s final transcript to the Clearinghouse at the end of his/her senior year. There are no NCAA forms available in the Guidance Office. All registration forms are to be completed online at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net.

DRIVER’S EDUCATIONDriver’s education is not offered as a part of Kennett High School’s curriculum. However, arrangements have been made with the Chester County Intermediate Unit to provide driver’s education. Students may register for this course by complet-ing a form available in the high school Main Office or by calling the Intermediate Unit at 484-237-5055. Forms may also be downloaded at www.cciu.org. Classes will tentatively be conducted after school, in the evening or on Saturdays either at Kennett High School or at Avon Grove High School.

WHAT is KABC?!

The Kennett Athletic Booster Club welcomes all freshman and return-ing Kennett athletes, parents and fans to another exciting new school year!

If your student will participate in Kennett High School sports this year we hope that you will help us to sup-port them by becoming a member right away. Many high schools with strong athletic programs require fees to play each sport and mandatory Booster Club membership fees as well. KABC’s is a voluntary membership that directly benefits your athlete.

A $20 membership per family helps KABC to sponsor and coordinate Homecoming activities, honor coaches’ requests for items not included in the KHS athletic budget, organize team parent representatives for each sport and helps with the cost of Senior rec-ognitions, Senior gifts, scholarships and more.

KABC is a fun and relevant way to stay involved in your student-athlete’s high school experience. There are great opportunities to volunteer and ways to make a difference by helping to build Kennett’s athletic strength and reputation. Parents may feel they’re no longer needed by their high schoolers and step back from volunteering at this stage. Studies have shown that seeing their parents’ involvement during this time makes the greatest impact. Get-ting involved with your children’s sport provides them another view of you as a role model in the community, support-ing the idea that sports are a valuable aspect of their development.

The Booster Club meets at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each school month in Room 102 of the high school and anyone is welcome at these meetings. To learn more please don’t miss our “Boosters” section on the KHS Athletics page of the www.kcsd.org web site. There is valuable informa-tion on how to immortalize your KHS family with a commemorative brick in the concession stand walkway of our new stadium. Kennett Spirit Gear order forms are available here as well as information on how to purchase ad-vertising in the stadium or get a copy of the Friends of Maureen Jefferson cookbook.

Contact KABC President, Mela-nie Richmond at (610)274-2063 or [email protected] with any questions you may have. Go Kennett Demons !!

Nurse’s Notes Brooke Mulroy, RN, M.Ed.

ALL Parents • Please remember that Student Emergency Sheets need to be completed every year!!!!

These forms were mailed in a general information letter to parents and students in August. Please have your child return them to his/her Advisory (Homeroom) Period teacher.

• If your child receives any immunizations over the summer, please forward the dates to the Nurse’s Office so I can keep your child’s immunization cards current.

Parents of 11th Grade Students • According to Pennsylvania State Law, ALL 11th grade students need to have a physical examination. This

exam can be done either by your private physician or by the nurse practitioner here in school. If you have your private physician complete the physical, please send me a copy of it (a blank form was mailed home in June to all incoming 11th grade students). If you choose to have this physical done in school, please return the permission form you received in June 2008 to the Nurse’s Office.

Vision Screens • Vision screens are being done after student pictures on the second day of school, Wednesday, September 3rd.

Please make sure your child brings his/her glasses/contacts to school that day for the vision screen.Guidelines for Keeping a Child Home

Although students should be attending school on a daily basis, your child should stay home from school if he/she has the following signs and symptoms of illness:

• Fever of > 100 degrees F. Your child should remain at home without a fever for 24 hours before returning to school (without the need for Tylenol or Motrin to keep the fever down).

• Vomiting or Diarrhea.• Head Lice. Notify the nurse if your child is treated for head lice. Your child must be checked by the nurse

before being readmitted to class.• Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye). Children must be treated with antibiotic eye drops for 24 hours before returning to

school.• Strep Throat, Bronchitis, or other infectious disease that requires antibiotics. Antibiotics must be given for 24

hours before your child returns to school.Medication

All medication must be sent to school in the original container or prescription bottle. A note must accompany the medication from the parent/guardian and prescription medications must also have a note from the doctor. With the exception of inhalers and epipens, students may not carry medication in school. All medication will be locked in the nurse’s office and the nurse will dispense medication as needed. Federally controlled medication such as Ritalin and narcotics must be transported to school by a parent or responsible adult and given directly to the school nurse. Students are not permitted to carry controlled substances on the bus or in school at any time. Determined on an individual basis and with consent from the parent and nurse, students may carry an inhaler or epipen. The student’s name should be clearly labeled with permanent marker on the inhaler or epipen.

You can help your child avoid unnecessary ab-sences by planning your activities around the school calendar! Check the flier section of this newsletter for the year's school holidays.

Attendance Policy It is important for all school-aged children to attend school every day. Parents are responsible for emphasizing the value of daily attendance and making sure that their children attend school every day. When children cannot attend school due to illness or other lawful reasons, their parents must send a note (within three days of the absence) to school requesting that the absence be excused. The note must contain:

1) the student’s full name 2) the date(s) of absence 3) the reason for the absence 4) the parent’s signature and date signed.

If a note is not received within three days, the absence is unlawful. If a student accumulates three unlawful days, a Notice of Violation letter will be sent to the parent as a warning that future unlawful absences will result in a court hearing. If a student has more than three unlawful absences, the parent (and student, age 13-16) will be referred to District court # 15-3-04, where significant fines and other punishments can be ordered. To help parents send the required notes when their children are absent, the District has pre-printed Absence Excuse Forms. These forms are included in the flier section of this newsletter and additional forms are available in each district school. Parents may send either a hand-written note or the completed form.

Student Code of ConductThis is simply a reminder from the administration that the school is an

academic institution and a student’s dress, behavior and attitude should reflect the positive and respectful atmosphere the school wants to exemplify at all times. Please review the student handbook and adhere to the school’s rules and regula-tions.
