About Wikipedia •  Wikipedia is an internet encyclopedia project in many languages including

our Khmer language. •  Wikipedia = Wiki (Hawaiian word for quick) + Encyclopedia

•  It is free of charge.

•  It is also "open content," which means anyone can copy it for any purpose, as long as they follow certain rules.

•  It is hosted by Wikimedia Foundation (WMF), a US non-profit organization based in San Francisco, California.

•  It was established on Jan 15, 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, separating from Nupedia.

•  It is based on an older Internet encyclopedia named Nupedia. It is a wiki that runs using the software MediaWiki (like all other Wikimedia projects).

About Wikipedia •  Anyone can change the pages in Wikipedia, or even make new ones.

Wikipedia has a standard format that must apply for all pages in the encyclopedia.

•  As of January 2011, Wikipedia had about: •  17.9 million articles, and •  over 270 languages.

•  Some people think that the English Language Wikipedia shows bias and unfairness. Editors of reference works such as the Encyclopædia Britannica have questioned Wikipedia's utility and status as an encyclopedia.

•  Others believe that Wikipedia is more useful than other encyclopedias because it can be updated so quickly.

About Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) •  The Wikimedia Foundation is a non-profit foundation in the United

States that coordinates many projects using the wiki idea, and the MediaWiki software.

•  The foundation's creation was officially announced by Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales, who was running Wikipedia within his company Bomis, on June 20, 2003.

•  The foundation gets most of its funds from donations, as it is nonprofit. It also looks for grants. Some companies have helped Wikimedia by giving free computer hardware, and by hosting servers. Since people can write the wikis, Wikimedia projects are free to use.

Core principle 1: Five pillars The foundations of the Wikipedia community are summarized in 5 simple ideas: •  Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia; •  it has a neutral point of view; •  it is free content that anyone can edit and distribute; •  all Wikipedians should interact in a respectful and civil

manner; •  and Wikipedia does not have firm rules.

Core principle 2: Founding principles: The Wikimedia Foundation, the global organization which oversees Wikipedia and other projects like it, is based on important common ideas as well: •  Neutrality is mandatory; •  anyone can edit (most) articles without registration; •  we make decisions through the "wiki process" of discussion; •  we want to work in a welcoming and collaborative environment; •  our content is freely licensed; and we leave room for particularly

difficult problems to be resolved by an authority.

Core principle 4: Ignore all rules (IAR): Rules on Wikipedia are not fixed in stone. The spirit of the rule trumps the letter of the rule. •  The common purpose of building an encyclopedia trumps both.

This means that any rule can be broken for a very good reason, if it ultimately helps to improve the encyclopedia. It doesn't mean that anything can be done just by claiming IAR, or that discussion is not necessary to explain one's decision.

Summary: Wikipedia in Brief Wikipedia aims to be a neutral compilation of verifiable, established facts. This means: •  Neutral: Wikipedia does not judge or advocate specific views or opinions,

Activity: Community/User Creed Question: WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN? •  I believe in knowledge. •  I believe that making knowledge available to others is a good thing. •  I believe in cooperation and teamwork. I hope and believe that by working

together, Wikipedians will achieve results better than any of us could produce on our own.

•  I believe in the Internet. I believe that it offers opportunities for human advancement that outweigh its dangers.

•  I believe in improving articles. I believe that no article is perfect, however much I may have worked on it, and will give others the chance to make their own contributions.

•  I believe in the maintenance of a neutral point of view when editing. I accept that it's not negotiable and I think it can work. I will try to put whatever understanding I do have into practice whenever I edit an article.

Activity: Community/User Creed Question: WHAT YOU BELIEVE IN? •  I believe in consensus. I may not know what it means, but I'll try as hard as I

can to make it work anyway. I'm wrong sometimes, otherwise I wouldn't be human, and right sometimes too, otherwise I wouldn't be here.

•  I believe in being polite and considerate to others. I recognise that if I can't do that, Wikipedia doesn't want me.

•  I believe in forgiveness, which is just as well because I sometimes wish I hadn't pressed "save" myself.

•  I believe in welcoming newbies and anonymous editors. I will always remember the days when I was in their shoes.

•  I believe in discussion. I will try to initiate and participate in discussions rather than making an article into a battleground, and in that I am able I will try to encourage others to do the same.

successors. I believe in the project. •  Wikipedia won't solve all of the world's problems, but I believe it can help to

solve some of them, however slightly. Whenever I edit I will focus on the goal of writing an encyclopedia, and use Wikipedia's resources only to advance that goal.
