OPENING KEYNOTE SPEAKERLeakhena Nou,PhD,isanAssociateProfessorofSociologyatCaliforniaStateUniversity,LongBeachandaVisitingScholarattheAsianPacificAmerican(A/P/A)InstituteatNewYorkUniversity.She holds a PhD and MA in sociology (UniversityofHawaiiatManoa),anMSW(ColumbiaUniversity),andaBAinsociology(CaliforniaStateUniversity,Fullerton).

Atrainedmedicalsociologist,Dr.NouisalsotheExecutiveDirectoroftheAppliedSocialResearchInstituteofCambodia(ASRIC).Hermajorresearchinterestsincludethesociologyoftrauma,humanrights/peaceandconflictstudies,Cambodian/AmericanStudies,andAsian/Pacific/AmericanStudies.ThroughASRIC’swork,Nouhascreatedandimplementedanongoingseriesofacclaimed,effectiveeventsacrosstheUnitedStatesthateducateandempowerCambodianstoparticipateintheExtraordinaryChambersoftheCourtsofCambodia.TheseinitiativesincludetheSharedSuffering,SharedResilienceforumsandtheCambodianDiasporaVictimsParticipationProject,andtheArtasWitnessProgram.

Her research interests center on the epidemiology of social stress andhealth/illness,politicalsociology,andhumanrights.Specifically,Dr.Nouinvestigatesthestressprocessasitaffectsfirstandsecond-generationsurvivorsoftheKhmerRougegeno-cide(1975-79).Herresearchfocusesontheroleofnegativelifeeventsaswellas“dailyhassles”inpredictingthepsychosocialwellbeingofCambodianadultrefugeesandthepost-KhmerRougegeneration.SheisalsoconductingresearchonthecurrentKhmerRougeTribunalandisworkingonprojectsthatdealspecificallywithissuesofambivalence,restorativejustice,reconciliation,reparation,andhealing.Also,herongoingresearchinvestigatessymbolicmeaningsofhuman-sextraffickingincontemporaryCambodiaandexploringthestructuralsymbolicinteractionistapproachtoKhmerRougeviolence.

Dr.Nouhasreceivednumerousgrantsandfellowshipstosupportherscholarlyactivities:aSeniorResearchFellowship(2012-2013)fromtheCenterforKhmerStudies;aProjectFacultyFellowship(Spring2010)fromtheResearchInfrastructureforMinoritiesProgramatCaliforniaStateUniversity,LongBeach;andaPostdoctoralFellowship(2004-2005)fromtheInstituteforAsianAmericanStudiesattheUniversityofMassachusetts,Boston.

CLOSING KEYNOTE SPEAKERBornandraisedinCarson,California,Angie Keam was always theonlyCambodianAmericaninherclasses.Growingup,sheknewverylittleaboutherownbackgroundandwas always curious to learn more aboutherCambodianheritage. AngiegraduatedfromCaliforniaStateUniversity,Fullerton(CSUF)in2009with a Bachelor’s Degree in CommunicationsandaminorinEnglish.AtCSUF,shebecameanadvocateforsocialjusticebybeinghighlyinvolvedwiththemulticulturalcommunityoncampus.She,alongwithherpeers,re-establishedtheCambodianStudentAssociationatCSUF.Duringhertenure,sheledCSAinrevivingtheCambodianCultureNightoncampusandhostedtheannualKhmerUnityGamesin2008.Inaddition,AngiewasanactivememberoftheKhmerStudentCoalition,duringwhichsheattendedthefirstKSCConferenceatUCLAandparticipatedinvariouseventssuchtheannualCambodianNewYearParadeandCambodianNewYearCelebrationinLongBeach.ShetrulybelievesintheimportanceofcoalitionbuildingandsupportingourCambodianAmericancommunity. AtCSUF,AngiealsoservedasafacilitatoroftheAsianAmericanPacificIslanderLeadership(AAPIL)Institute,astudentrepresentativeinestablishingtheAsianAmericanPacificIslanderCommunityResourceCenter,andwasinvolvedwithprogramsandeventssponsoredbytheMulticulturalLeadershipCenterandtheAssociationforInterCulturalAwareness. SherecentlyfinishedherMasterofEducationinPostsecondaryAdministrationandStudentAffairsattheUniversityofSouthernCalifornia(USC).Herexpertiseisworkinginstudentactivities,leadershipdevelopment,multiculturalaffairs,andstudentlife.ShehasheldvariouspositionsatUSCandattheUniversityofCalifornia,Irvine,whichincludeddepartmentssuchasCampusActivities,AsianPacificAmericanStudentServices,LGBTResourceCenter,andStudentLife&Involvement.Inallherroles,she serves as an advocate for students and strives to provide a conducive and supportive environment for students to learn and growasleaders.

Monique Chhoeun graduated from CaliforniaStateUniversityofLongBeach,whereshemajoredinAsianAmericanStudies.Shewasselectedasa“DistinguishedUndergraduate”forherservice to and leadership in the CambodianStudentSocietyorganizationonandoffcampus.MoniqueiscurrentlyworkingintheCosmeticRegulatoryIndustryasanAssociateRegulatoryConsultantinconjunctiontoprovidingsafetyandreliableconsumerproductsto

consumersintheUSandEU.

Moniqueistrulydelightedandhonoredtobepartofthisextraordinaryconference,andalsowouldliketoextendhergratitudetotheCambodianStudentAssociationofCaliforniaStateUniversity,Fullertonforalloftheirhardworkinpreppingandexecutingthisconference.

CONFERENCE HOSTS

Michael Kolana Kek was not a role modelinhisearlyyears.Hechangedhis name to Michael in the third grade tobemoreAmerican,barelygraduatedhighschoolin1999witha1.99GPA,didnottaketheSATs,didnotlearntheKhmerwordfor“battery”until2007,wasplacedonacademicprobationafterhisfirstyearofcommunitycollege,anddidnotappreciatethesacrificeshisparentsmadeforhim. SomehowMichaelturnedthingsaround.In2001heattendedCerritosCommunityCollegewhereheservedaspresidentoftheScholarsHonorsClubandvicepresidentofPhiThetaKappa.HetransferredtoUCLAin2003whereheco-foundedUCLA’sPhiBetaLambda-FutureBusinessofLeaders,servedasUCLAUKSVPin2004,wasawarded2ndplaceatanationalbusinesscompetition.HeiscurrentlyemployedbytheCityofLosAngelesastheleadhousingandeconomicdevelopmentanalyst,andhelearnedtoap-preciatethesacrificeshisparentshavemadeforhim. MichaelcurrentlyresidesinthecityofLongBeach,ownsacorginamedBaicha,andfrequentlyspeakstostudentsontheimportanceofinternships.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS

I. CULTUREA. Affirmation Thisworkshopwillaffirmnegativethoughtsandstatementsaboutself-imageandstereotypesthroughapositivelight.Discussionswillallowparticipantstodissecttherootsofthesestereotypes,toworktogethertoovercomethebarriersofstereotypes,andtoinvokeunityamongothers. B. Food For Thought This workshop includes videos and improvisational skits to show generationalgapsandlanguagebarrierswithintheCambodianAmericancommunity.Duringdiscussion,participantswillreflectontherelationshipbetweendifferentgenerationsandconflictingissuesfromwhichtheyarise.Inaddition,participantswilldelveintotheimportanceofpreservingtheCambodianculture.

C. In My Shoes ThisworkshopshedslightuponthesharedexperiencesintheCambodianAmericancommunity.Participantswillidentifywithothersonaninterpersonallevelbylisteningtoandlearningfromthepersonalstoriesofparticipants.Discussionswillreflectonthecommonalityinexperiences.

II. SOCIAL ISSUESA. Mental Health Facilitator: Amina Sen-Matthews - Orange County Asian & Pacific Islander Community Alliance (OCAPICA) Mentalhealthisessentialtoaperson’swell-beingandtheabilitytoliveafullandproductivelife.Peoplewithuntreatedmentalhealthdisordersareathigh-riskformanyunhealthyandunsafebehaviors,includingalcoholordrugabuse,violentorself-destructivebehavior,andsuicide.Thisworkshopexploresthestigmas,assumptions,andmythsofmentalhealth.

B. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder The Cambodian Family (CamFam)Facilitators: Phalen Lim & Sundaram Rama ThePost-TraumaticStressDisorderworkshopfocusesontheimpactofPTSDwithintheCambodiancommunity.ParticipantswillbepresentedwithobservationsthathavebeencollectedinrecentyearsthroughtheCambodianFamily.Discussionswillbeheld to critically analyze how PTSD affects participants and the peoplearoundthem.

Max Bet (Gambling) Facilitators: Caylee So and Sophin Zoe Pruong-McCreery IsthereanexistinggamblingproblemwithintheCambodiancommunity,andwhyisthetopicsoseldomtalkedabout?ThisworkshopexplorestheCambodianAmericanidentityandaimstodelveintotheCambodian-Americanexperiencewithgambling.

III. POLICYA. Sentenced Home?Facilitators: Paul Chorn, PraCh Ly, David Ros (One Love Move-ment), and Katherine Kouot (API Equality-LA) The attainment of American citizenship is a common dream for immigrantsofforeigncountries,andthestruggleagainstunjustdeportationduetopastandrecentlegislationisongoing.FortheCambodiancommunity,thisdreamisvivid,aliveandstrong.Pastand recent legislation has tampered with these dreams creatingnightmaresofincomprehensibleproportions.Monstersofthepastwillultimatelyhaveyoupackingyourbagsandsendingyou“home”.

B. Khmer Rouge Tribunal 2012: Memory and Justice Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam) Facilitators: Sreinith Ten & Suyheang KryGenocideisthedeliberateandsystematicexterminationofanational,racial,political,orculturalgroup.TheKhmerpeoplehaveenduredunimaginablepainandsufferingatthehandsofPol Pot and his regime that claimed the lives of nearly 2 million people.Afterthreedecadesofsilence,survivorsaregatheringintheextraordinarychambersofCambodiawhereanunprecedentedtrialsupportedbytheUnitedNationsisinsession.AmongtheatrocitiescommittedbytheKhmerRouge,seniorleadersarechargedwithcrimesagainsthumanity.Theworldcontinuestowatch and listen in horror as survivors recount the hell they went through.Itistimeforjustice.

TheDocumentationCenterofCambodia(DC-Cam)isanindependentCambodianresearchinstitute.Since1995,theinstitutionhasbuiltareputationasaninternationalleaderinthequestformemoryandjustice.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONSIV. LEADERSHIP

A. Presidential Roundtable Facilitator: Angie KeamEverystudentorganizationstrivestobebetter.Thisdiscussionfacilitatesthegrowthofeachorganizationbysharingdifferentexperiencesfromstudentorganizationrepresentatives.Thepurpose of this workshop is to share what works effectively in runningastudentorganization.Whetheryouareapastpresident,currentpresident,interestedinbecomingpresident,orjustamember,thisdiscussionwelcomesall.

B. Color Me Blind Learntodevelopyourteambuildingandleadershipskills.Thisworkshopisahands-onapproachthatfocusesonyourcommunicationskills.

C. Business Ladder Facilitators: Chad Sammeth, Chhaya Tan, and Calvin Takagi Tabata Business Ladder is a workshop that introduces tested and proven strategiesgearedtowardscatapultingitsaudienceintobecomingsuccessfulinbothabusinessenvironmentandtheirpersonallife.Teachingswillbebasedonrefreshingideasonhowtoapproachchallenges facing the current generation and instill leadership qualitiesthatareapplicableindailyroutines.Theconceptsandideasacquiredwillenforcethenotionthatsuccessisnotjustaonetimeachievement,butrather…somethingthatyouwillliveandbreathe.

WORKSHOP FACILITATORSAmina Sen-MatthewsisanOutreachInterventionSpecialist(OIS).ShegraduatedfromtheUniversityofCalifornia,RiversidewithaBachelor’sdegreeinLiberalStudiesandaminorinEducation.ShehasaMaster’sinCrossCulturalEducationfromNationalUniversityandholdsateachingcredentialinCaliforniaandTexas.Shewasateacherinthepublicschoolsystemforsixyearsbeforechanging her career path to work in the community where she felt she could make

moreofadifference.SheiscurrentlyworkingattheOrangeCountyAsianandPacificIslanderCommunityAlliance(OCAPICA)asanOISinthementalhealthpreventionandearlyinterventionprogram.Sheisresponsibleforcasemanagement,conductionofworkshops,andsupportgroupfacilitation.AsanOIS,sheisstationedattheCambodianFamilytoworkwiththeKhmerpopulation and provide prevention and early intervention of mentalhealthservices.

Phalen Lim lived through and survived the CambodianGenocideinthelate70’s.Intheearly 80’s Phalen and her family immigrated toAmericaasrefugeesandresidedinalow-income,high-crime,andsociallyisolatedneighborhoodinthecityofSantaAna.ShevolunteeredattheCambodianFamily,anonprofit,community-basedorganizationservingrefugeesandimmigrants.Forthepast20years,shehasworkedasayouthcounselor,communityorganizer,traditionaldanceinstructor,familycounselor,andmentortovariousyouthandadultsupportgroups.AsthecurrentDirectorofthePlanAheadYouthProgram,her role is to support and inspire young people to achieve higher educationandtobecomealeaderintheircommunity PhalenservedasaChairoftheOrangeCountyCambodianCom-pleteCountforthe2010Censusandco-foundedtheOrangeCountyCambodianAmericanNetwork.SheearnedaBachelor’s,teachingcredential,andMasterofScienceinCounselingfromCaliforniaStateUniversity,Fullerton.In2009,PhalenwasawardedtheCaliforniaPeacePrizebytheCaliforniaWellnessFoundation,applaudingherasanintegralleaderincombatinggang violence and promoting cultural pride and understanding in SantaAna.

WORKSHOP FACILITATORSSundaram RamawasborninCambodia,livedthroughtheCambodianGenocide,escapedtorefugeecamps,andcametotheUnitedStateswithhisfamilyin1981.HeearnedhisBAinLiberalStudiesfromtheUniversityofCalifornia,Riverside.

SundaramiscurrentlytheExecutiveDirectorattheCambodianFamily,a31-year-oldnonprofit,community-basedorganizationprovidingservicestomulti-

ethnicrefugeeandimmigrantchildrenandfamiliesinOrangeCounty.Theorganizationprovidesservicesinthreeareas:workforcedevelopment,communityhealth,andyouth.HehasbeenwiththeCambodianFamilyfor18years.Hispastinvolve-mentincludes:boardofdirectorsoftheSantaAnaEmpowermentCorporationandOrangeCountyAsianPacificIslanderCommunityAlliance,andcurrentlyheisontheCommunityAdvisoryBoardofKOCEandaSteeringCommitteememberoftheNationalCambodianAmericanHealthInitiative.RecentlyhereceivedaCommunityLeaderAwardfromOrangeCountyHumanRelations.

Caylee SowasborninarefugeecampinThailandonSeptember17th,1981,justafter her parents’ escape from the reign of PolPot’sKhmerRougeregimeinCambodia.Whenshewasthreeyearsold,herfamilyimmigratedtotheUnitedStates.Shegrewup in Northern Virginia where she spent mostofheryouth.In2000,soonafterherhighschoolgraduation,CayleejoinedtheUSarmedforcesandservedintheVirginiaArmyNationalGuardforthenexteightyears.There,shewroteforalittlecolumncalledCaylee’sCorner,anewsletterthatwas sent out to friends and families of deployedsoldiers.Inbetweentourofduty,CayleeattendedNorthernVirginiaCommunitywhereshediscoveredherloveofwriting.Creativewritingledtotheatre,andtheatreledtofilm;all mediums that had one things in common: they all captured stories.In2011,CayleewasawardedtheZonta’sWomeninFilmgrantforMostPromisingYoungFilmmaker.In2012CayleereceivedherMFAinFilmProductionatDodgeCollegeofFilmandMediaArts,havingwontheBestPictureandBestDirectoratherschool’sCecilAwardsthatyear.

WORKSHOP FACILITATORSSophin Zoe Pruong-McCreery is the owner ofPruong-McCreery,abusinessconsultingfirmspecializinginprofessionaltraining,multimediamarketing,andadvocacy.Hercurrentcreativeprojectsarefo-cusedintheartsandentertainmentindustry.Shehasextensiveknowledgeandexpertiseinpromotions,productionsandeventscoordination.ShereceivedtheJohnGreenleafWhittierTuitionscholarshipfromWhittierCollegewhereshegraduatedin2001withaBAinComparativeCultureswith

minorsinSociologyandSpanish.AwardedwiththeHeritageLanguageFellowship,shewentontostudytheKhmerLanguageandSoutheastAsianStudiesattheUniversityofWisconsin,Madison.AsawomanwhovaluestheeducationandpromotionofCambodian-Americanartsandculture,sheisthrilledandhonoredtoservethecommitteeproducingthefirstAnnualCambodianTownFilmFestival.

BorninSiemReap,Cambodia,Sreinith Ten grewupwithastrongbeliefthateducationisthewaytoprosperity.Withastatescholarshipin2007,shepursuedherundergraduatestudiesatRoyalUniversityofPhnomPenh,InstituteofForeignLanguagesTeachingEnglishasaForeignLanguageinPhnomPenh,Cambodia.Claimingfirstprizeinauniversity-widepublicspeakingcontestawardedSreinithintoastudentexchangeprogramtoKobe-ShoinWomen’sUniversityinJapan. ShebecameavolunteerattheDocumentationCenterofCambodia(DC-Cam),anindependentresearchinstitutewhichcollects,documents,andresearchesonKhmerRougematerialstoserveforjusticeandtruthintheaftermathoftheKhmerRougegenocide.She was a translator and staff writer for the Searching for the TruthmagazineprojectofDC-Cam.ShehasworkedwithKhmerRougesurvivorsrecountingtheirpersonalexperienceslivingthrough genocide and writing their stories for the magazine publication.ShehasattendedthetrialsoftheseniorKhmerRougeleaders and wrote descriptive summaries of the court sessions for thepublic.SreinithiscurrentlypursuingherMastersinPoliticalScienceatNorthernIllinoisUniversity.

WORKSHOP FACILITATORSSuyheang Kry completed her undergraduate workinEducationfromtheRoyalUniversityof Phnom Penh and participated in trainings suchastheGlobalLeaderforJusticeProgram(USA)andInternationalTraininginHumanRights,PeaceandSecurity(Sweden).Herdrive and determination led her to pursue a Master’sdegreeinPeaceandConflictStudiesattheUniversityofMassachusettsinLowell.

SheworksforDocumentationCenterofCambodia(DC-Cam),anindependentresearchinstitutededicatedtopromotingmemory,justice,andreconciliationforthecrimesforthepastfouryearsasbothatranslatorandvictimassistanceoftheVictimParticipationProject(VPA).ToenhancetheachievementofjusticeforKhmerRougecrimes,VPAworkswithsurvivorsassistingtheminexercisingtheirvictimrightsbeforetheKhmerRougeTribunal,to create a more meaningful participation and space where the projectcouldcontributetohealingtheirpasttraumaorreconcilethemselvesthroughtheirjudicialparticipation,andtoestablishamorecomprehensivehistoricalrecordoftheKhmerRougeperiod.TheVPAhasassistedover1750survivors.

PraCh Lyisaninternationallyrenown,criticallyacclaimed,awardwinningartist.Hisdebutalbumisthefirst#1rapalbuminCambodia.Newsweekproclaimedhimas“thefirstCambodianrapstar”.Throughmasterfullyricsofpowerfulrapmusic,hismusicnotonlyentertainsbutalsoeducates.HislyricshavebeenpublishedbymultiplepublishingsandiscurrentlybeingusedforSoutheastAsianStudies.

HeistheyoungestcoordinatoroftheCambodianNewYearCelebrationinLongBeachCalifornia(2002),theGrandMarshalofthe2ndAnnualCambodianNewYearParade(2005),andwasawardedbytheCambodian-AmericanBusinessAssociationfor“SuccessfulBusiness,EntrepreneurshipandCommunityServiceExcellence”(2011).HeisalsothefounderandCoordinatoroftheCambodiaTownFilmFestival,ChairmenoftheBoard-WestCoastCommitteeforCelebrateAsia,CEOofMujesticRecords,andFounderandCo-OwneroftheOrphanageProductions.

WORKSHOP FACILITATORSChad Sammeth is a leading advocate for the CambodiancommunityinLongBeach.Growingupdistantfromthecommunity,hewasdiscouragedbythebadpressandimageregardingCambodiansinLongBeach.Withnohelpful solutions to the community problems,ChadmovedintoLongBeachandbeganvolunteeringinthecommunityinvariouscapacities,startingwiththefirstever,CambodianNewYearParadeinApril2005.

Sincethen,hehasbeenrecognizedbycitycouncilmembers,civicleaders,communityleaders,religiousleadersandbusinessleaders.HeiscurrentlytheProjectCoordinatorfortheUnitedCambodianCommunity,acommunitybasedorganizationinLongBeach.HeservesontheSteeringCommitteeasTreasurerfor“BuildingHealthyCommunities:LongBeach,”atenyearinitiativetoimprovehealthdisparities.HealsoservesonboardfortheCatalystNetworkofCommunities,anorganizationfosteringchangeagentsandsocialentrepreneurship.Hislatestroleinvolvesthefirstever,CambodiaTownFilmFestivalandisthefounderofCambodianYoungEntrepreneursSociety(C-YES).

Chhaya Tan is currently employed with JP MorganChaseintheMortgageBankingindustry.Previously,hespentfiveyearswithWellsFargoEquipmentFinanceandwasthechairmemberoftheWellsFargoDiversityCommittee.Hehelpedbuildeventsandtrainingseminarstopromotediversity.HealsoservedasaboardmemberwiththeWellsFargoCommunitySupportCampaignandhelpedorganizepartnershipevents.

Outsideofthecorporateenvironment,Chhayaisactiveinvariousorganizations that help foster leadership and community develop-ment.Heisthevice-presidentandco-founderofAscendArizonaStateUniversitywhichenablesAsianandPacificIslanderstorealizeleadershippotentialinabusinesssetting.Duringhisten-ure,Ascendwonthe2011-2012OrganizationoftheYearaward.
