KHEAA 4 Adults Returning to School 2020 If you didn’t complete high school, you can: • Pass the GED ® test to earn a high school equivalency diploma issued by the state. • Earn 12 credit hours with a grade of C or higher in four qualifying, general education courses at a Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) school and be awarded a high school equivalency diploma issued by the state. You also may be able to take online classes through Kentucky Adult Education Skills U. To do so, you must be at least 16 years old, live or work in Kentucky, and not be enrolled in high school. You’ll need internet access and an email account. After you register online, your county’s adult education center will contact you. If you want to earn a GED ® , create a MyGED ® account at www.ged.com, where you can find information about preparing for and taking the test in Kentucky. Your account will tell you who can take the GED ® test and has study guides, links to Kentucky Skills U centers, a list of Kentucky test centers and a test schedule. If you’re eligible, you can receive free educational services at Kentucky Skills U centers — there’s an office in every county in Kentucky. Your adult education center may provide the Ready™ test free as part of your educational plan. For a list of Skills U centers, go to your MyGED ® account or see pages 8–13. To earn a GED ® , you must pass the four parts of the test: mathematics, language arts, science and social studies. The test must be taken on computer at an official testing center. Kentucky residents must be 19 or older to take the GED test or, if 18, have been officially withdrawn from school for at least 90 days as certified by the local school district (school superintendent may waive waiting period). The withdrawal form and directions for submitting it are available at your MyGED ® account at www.ged.com. Those taking the test must also have a Kentucky address and pass the GED Ready ® official practice test. You can find the Kentucky testing policies at your MyGED ® account at www.ged.com. Testing accommodations are available for people with documented disabilities. If you need a testing accommodation, you can ask for details when you create your MyGED ® account. You can also email [email protected] for more information. To earn a Kentucky high school equivalency diploma by taking college classes, you must be at least 19 years of age, not have a high school diploma or its equivalent, have a Kentucky address and meet the admission and placement requirements of KCTCS institutions. Enroll in a KCTCS college and complete at least three credit hours in each of the following content areas, as certified with an official KCTCS transcript — written communication, quantitative reasoning, natural sciences, and social and behavioral sciences. You must earn at least a C in each required class. Once you have competed the courses, there is a $25 application and processing fee to receive the diploma. You can a find list of the approved classes and obtain the application form at www.kyskillsu.ky.gov or by calling 502.573.5114.
