Residents,
Dear KHRA Residents:
What a contrast, from the record snowfall this past winter to
record heat in June. Summer has just started and we have
already had many days above 90°. Please be attentive to the
needs of the elderly and young children as this kind of heat can
take a toll on them very quickly.
This kind of weather puts a high demand on the air
conditioner (AC) units. If you have any problems with the AC
please contact maintenance. Please be patient, we will handle requests as quickly as possible.
Many fun activities are planned for the summer. Please participate; these activities are a
great way to get involved in your community. The biggest of all community events is Fun Fest
and all KHRA resident associations have “block parties” planned. Riverview will be having
Rhythm in Riverview again this year on July 19. Also, we will be conducting Xtreme
Challenge again from July 13 – 15. There will be lots of fun for kids!
We have completed a number of Capital Fund activities this year in the roofing of Holly
Hills, Lee and Cloud along with window replacement in Holly Hills, Dogwood Terrace and
Tiffany Court. We were also able to replace a number of HVAC units in Lee. Funding for
additional work on HVAC in Cloud and parts of Lee is expected soon. Thank you for your
assistance and patience as our contractors complete these improvements and will be doing so
again in the future.
Lastly, KHRA is very proud of the student residents who graduated from high school this
year. We wish them well in their future efforts. Have a great summer. Keep cool and be safe.
Sincerely,
Terry W. Cunningham

value-based decisions, as well as reinforce that they are important,
valuable and beautiful, just as they are. The “All About Me” curricu-
lum is divided into three - 4 week sessions that foster healthy growth in
each specific focus area. A 5-K Race is scheduled in December in
Johnson City. For more information & to sign up, contact Aiesha Banks
at 392—2552 or 392-2577, or Nancy Durant at 392-2531 (LFLC).

What happened to Spring?! Seems as though we went from Winter to Sum-mer. If April and May are any indication it looks and feels like we’re going to have a hot, hu-mid Summer.
The following are some Energy Saving tips for cooling:
Set the thermostat at “one” temperature for cooling & leave it there. Raising & lowering the thermostat increases electrical consumption & creates problems with the HVAC system.
Close the curtains & blinds, especially during the day, to help keep the rooms cool. Doing so helps prevent solar heat from the sun which warms the rooms.
Keep the doors & windows closed!
Keep furniture & other items away from the return air vent so the thermostat can sense the air temperature. Also, do not block the supply air vents with furniture & other items.
On a Safety note:
Do not leave the range and/or oven unattended while cooking, frying or baking! More lives and property are lost due to range fires than other fire related incidents.
Please! Please! Please! Keep children away from the mowers and their equipment. Their mowers, trimmers and blowers are noisy…so they may not know when children are present.
Please keep litter & trash picked up & disposed of into the dumpsters. Trash, litter & personal items such as toys, bicycles, lawn chairs, etc. may cause someone to fall and is time consuming for the mowers to either move or trim around!
School is out so please make sure that children are supervised while outside and keep them away from the streets, parking lots and alleys.
Tripping, slipping & falling can cause serious injury. Please use steps and stairs inside & out & use the handrails! Keep extension cords, TV cables, loose rugs, toys and other items out of the way.
Summer storms can bring high winds, lightning, hail and heavy rain. If your electricity goes off during these times check with your neighbor to see of their power is off also which it probably will be. If so, call the power company (AEP – Appalachian Power) at 1-800-967-4237 to report the outage.
We have accomplished a lot over the past 12 months with both the ARRA stimulus (American Recovery & Re-investment Act) and Capital Funds:
Re-Roofed & new guttering at Lee Apartments & Cloud Apartments
New Windows with security screens at Holly Hills and Tiffany Court
New HVAC systems at 36 apartments in Lee Apartments.
We are working on plans to expand the Community Building at Lee Apartments for much needed office space for Housing Management and working on plans to begin replacement of HVAC systems at Cloud Apartments.
Please remember to call 392-2541, 245-6469 or 245-5561 Monday thru Friday 8:00 – 4:30 if something is in need of repair. For After Hour Maintenance Emergencies (after 4:30 Monday thru Friday & on weekends & holidays call 245-5561. If you need Emergency Medical, Fire or the Police call 911.

mentary, as well as, a part time student at ETSU where she is a double major in So-
ciology and General Studies. This is Christin’s second year working as a Summer
Associate with VISTA. She said she “believes this program has been beneficial to
me because it has allowed me to meet and work with new people as well as provide
training which has helped expand my job experience. But, most importantly, it has
allowed me to give back to my community in helping those in need within the 10
weeks with KHRA and the Resident Initiatives Programs.” Welcome “back” aboard!

work with Veterans as a social worker and that will allow me to include my nursing back-
ground in with it.” She added, “I am glad to be working with KHRA because my mother
has been with the company for 24 years, and I feel like I have grown up around the com-
pany and the great people that work for it.” We are pleased to welcome Kelly to our team!

May 30th—June 4th, residents of KHRA were happy to welcome back their friends from Petal, Mississippi who
travel each year to Kingsport to sponsor Bible School in each development of public housing. Groups gathered
in the community rooms of each development and large numbers of children enjoyed the crafts, music, and
“the message.” Sponsored by Sullivan Baptist Association, the Petal, Mississippi’s Calvary Baptist Volunteers”
treated our youth with food, prizes and lots of love. They are looking forward to returning next year. Hopefully
the Lee Community will be able to host the group next year. Due to moving our Housing Management office to
a new office, the community room will be available for Lee residents to enjoy this event. Many thanks to Cal-
vary Baptist in Petal Mississippi and we will see you next year!
Kingsport’s Parks & Recreation staff, Travis Sensabaugh
and Darius Davis, have over 31 youth enrolled at Lee Family
Learning Center. When field trips to Wetlands, Fun
Expedition, and others are scheduled, they have more than a
full house. Anyone not attending the Summer Playground
Program can head on out to unit # 2 and you will find Travis
and Darius waiting for you. They will make it a fun and
adventurous summer. (Free lunch is provided)
Cloud Resident Association members / residents held
weekly clean up days in their development to help KHRA
with the debris left from summer activities and extra traffic.
These are some of the volunteers who showed up weekly to
clean up their neighborhood. KHRA would like to thank all
those who volunteered to spruce up their community. Way to
go guys! Thanks so much!

The new Riverview Community, which is 38 homes; 22 of which are single-family dwell-
ings and 8 duplexes is becoming a reality. Our initial lease-up for our families will begin as
early as July 1, 2010 in the two homes on Wheatley Street. The four off-site units on Carver
Street are anticipated for occupancy mid-July to August. Our families have worked hard to
obtain complete eligibility status with a continuing progress toward becoming self-sufficient.
Transferring into Riverview will be a new phase in our families’ lives as they progress thru the Family Self-Sufficiency pro-
gram.
For the remaining of the single-family dwellings and duplexes, anticipation to begin occupancy is set for late September or
early October. As a premier rental development, the new Riverview community will have a strong focus on moving toward
self-sufficiency therefore:
To be eligible to occupy Riverview as a working family the following criteria must be met:
* All adult members must be employed at a minimum of 30 hours per week or be considered a full-time stu-
dent or the combination of both.
* All adult members must have completed the Steps to Economic & Personal Success class.
* Family must be enrolled in the FSS program.
The Riverview community has 8 units designated for Elderly/Handicap/Disabled households. Although these households are
exempt from the work requirement, the Steps to Economic & Personal Success class must be completed as well as the en-
rollment in the CSS program. Should you be interested in the programs and services available in the new Riverview Com-
munity, please contact Darlene Gibson, CSS Specialist at 423-392-2548.

AMP Camp
Advanced Manufacturing Camp
(AMP) was a grant funded camp
attended by our youth. It was
designed for students completing
the 6th & 7th grades and sponsored by Northeast State.
AMP Camp provided participants with exciting & interac-
tive activities designed to teach them about the processes
involved in developing products that effect their everyday
lives. They met at RCAM Operations Lab and were able to
tour Eastman Chemical Co., KCHE Chemistry Lab and
Domtar. They ended their activities by giving several pres-
entations on Quality of Life and the exploration of what
type of lifestyle they hope to have when they are adults and
what sort of career and income will be required to sustain
their lifestyles.
