The global financial crisis seems to be reversing slowly. There are incipient signs of improvement in most countries, although we have still far to go before the global economy is back on the same level as for a few years ago. In large parts of the world, consumers are still very cautious despite historically low interest rates, rising public spending and decreasing taxes. Economic activity has ceased to fall, but the light at the end of the tunnel is not yet so bright that we really believe the crisis is over. And there is perhaps a good reason for that as the financial crisis was perhaps a sign of more than a crisis in the financial system. The crisis was perhaps a sign that the world economic order is changing. Large significant countries like Brazil, China and India are emerging. U.S. and Europe are similarly plagued by very large underlying economic imbalances. We can take our own industry as a good example of what is happening. In Europe, manufacturers and fur farmers are subject to a wide range of adjustments which are probably justified, but which overall make it extremely difficult if not impossible for the industry to survive in international competition. Cost level is high and tax pressure significant, which compared with the eternally rising costs of environmental initiatives, working environment, animal welfare, social obligations, energy, etc. in conjunction with increasing administration as a result of a very tight control by public authorities mean that altogether it gets increasingly difficult to offset rising costs by increasing productivity. We are losing competitiveness in all areas. Most industries are in the same situation and therefore European economies lose dynamics, growth stalls, consumers tighten their belts, and the domestic market is suffering which gives further impetus to the downward spiral. The emerging countries are not yet plagued by these problems why the world economic balance is upset. Life is lived forward-looking but we
understand life backwards. And this very fact makes it often very difficult to accept and thus implement the adaptations of companies and organizations that are needed to survive in a dynamic world. In the autumn, Danish television broadcast a totally manipulated transmission on animal welfare at Danish fur farms. The transmission had no political consequences, but notwithstanding, the broadcast was totally misleading; it has nevertheless forced us to focus on how we can avoid similar broadcasts in future. Over the past few years we have worked on the development of a very advanced operating system for the fur production which will be implemented on the Danish fur farms this year. We must so to speak accept that the surrounding community requires that all parts in the chain are professionalised. At the same time the fierce international competition makes requirements for continuous improvements in efficiency and quality. Kopenhagen Fur has therefore signed several cooperation agreements with major manufacturing areas and retail centres; all with a view to strengthening
the parties’ competencies. Similarly, industry associations face new times. In some countries, the fur industry is so weak that it would perhaps be useful to seek the cooperation of the general organizations. Europe should no longer be seen as an area of 25-30 independent countries. More and more decisions are now made in Brussels and both farmers and trade organizations must accept this. And finally, the economic balance of power has - even in our industry - moved eastward. It should of course also be reflected in the industry’s international way to organize itself. Fur farmers are in the process of adapting to the changing times. At present a small working group is preparing proposals to reorganize the IFTF. The fur industry has survived for millennia because it has constantly adapted itself and seen new opportunities. There is no evidence that this ability to adapt has been lost.

Royal gala show in hong KongThe show was part of the big trade- and industry drive in Danish fashion and design in Hong Kong. HRH Prince Joachim and HRH Princess Marie of Denmark and a number of Hong Kong celebrities were present at the event sponsored by Kopenhagen Fur.
Qi Qi, Nina Lam, May and Wilson Woo and Olivia Lee Davies were some of the Hong Kong celebrities on the guest list along with 300 other guests at Kopenhagen Fur’s gala dinner and fashion show in Hong Kong in November that celebrated the trade and industry drive in Danish fashion and design in the region. The consumption of luxury goods has defeated the financial crisis in Hong Kong and last year it went up 20 per cent. - The mentality in China and Hong Kong is generally different from the western world concerning the consumption of luxury goods, says Kopenhagen Fur’s Managing Director Torben Nielsen. - Analyses show that the need for showing economic prosperity grows in times of crisis which the growing demand for luxury goods reflects. Therefore, it is important for Danish fashion and design to seize the moment and exploit the unexploited opportunities on the Hong Kong market, says Torben Nielsen.
ChiLdren’s furAt the fashion show creations from Danish designers such as Benedikte Utzon, Louise Amstrup, TOKLUM, E & L LUNDQVIST, Whiite and Soulland were on the catwalk. As a surprise, the brands had each created a children’s fur coat which HRH Prince Joachim and HRH Princess Marie of Denmark were very impressed with. Fur for children is the latest trend on the international market. - People were most excited about children’s fur. Especially the accessories; It opened their eyes for fur in other
shapes than coats, says Event Manager of Kopenhagen Fur Christina Jürgensen. According to her, the evening was a huge success: - It was one of the biggest events in Hong Kong. Celebrities, successful businessmen and the press from Hong Kong and China were present. Never have I been at such an exclusive and thoroughgoing event, and we succeeded in showing that fur can appear as anything from beautiful flower decorations on the tables to accessories, Christina Jürgensen says.

Rikke Dalsgaard (47) is always carefully prepared, even when it comes to taking a chance. When she chose to quit her job as Group Marketing Director in leading Danish telecom company TDC, it was without a new job opportunity at hand. However, it granted her time to spend with her family, something that was not possible on a large scale earlier. Her husband did the same, and for six months they went round the world with their 14 year old daughter. After six months abroad, Rikke Dalsgaard was ready to join an organization again, preferably of a certain size. The Kopenhagen Fur ad just felt right: - To work with the entire value chain, from farmer to global buyer, on a strong and traditional Danish foundation, is a privilege for the few. I had to apply for that position, Rikke Dalsgaard says. Especially the continuing process of change that Kopenhagen Fur is constantly
involved in attracted her: - Only one thing is kept holy at Kopenhagen Fur: the cooperative idea and the faith that the cooperation between equal people and companies fortifies. Everything else can be discussed. We are simply forced to be the most efficient. Otherwise we cannot make it in the tough international competition, Rikke Dalsgaard says.
froM serviCe to saLeIn connection with Sales Director Erik Neergaard’s retirement there have been some thoughts on the future structure of the international sale. This has resulted in a new Sales Organization in which three formerly independent working areas are now combined; The Skin Supply Department, the Quality Department and the Customer Department. Kopenhagen Fur’s office in Beijing is also part of the Sales Organization, and to ensure
a continuing professional and smooth handling of the auctions in Copenhagen, an auction group of very experienced employees has been established. - What was right yesterday might not be right today and perhaps not at all right tomorrow. Kopenhagen Fur must adapt itself to changes in the surrounding society, Rikke Dalsgaard states. It is noticeable that the general trend is towards fewer fur breeders who tend to run larger businesses in a more professional way which is why the way the organization helps the farmers to strengthen their businesses must be changed. The surrounding society makes more and more political demands on how to run the farms, be it environmental or welfare issues, and Kopenhagen Fur plays an important role in providing the right tools for the farmers to deal with these issues. The organization is very strong on IT-related issues such as breeding, skin

statistics, feeding analysis etc. - I am convinced that these types of systems will be of more importance for the individual farmer in the future, because the demands on efficiency, quality and farm management are growing, Rikke Dalsgaard says.
China and russia taKing overThere have been some significant changes for the customers as well. The fur industry used to be centred on Europe and North America, but today China and Russia are taking over. In recent years, Kopenhagen Fur has made a serious effort in China. Not only is China the world’s largest consuming country, it is also the world’s largest fur manufacturing country. Without question, China is Kopenhagen Fur’s most important market. Since 1996 Kopenhagen Fur has its own office in Beijing which today counts six indispensible employees since success in China depends heavily on a fundamental knowledge of Chinese culture and business traditions. Kopenhagen Fur’s partnerships in China already counts cooperation agreement with leading education centre Tsinghua University and a wide range of certified fur retail centres in China. Now the time has come to include the large fur production centres.
ProfessionaL CooPerationThe main part of the fur production in China is carried out in six fur production areas. The Sales Organization is now implementing the strategy, and
Kopenhagen Fur has signed four cooperation agreements, the last two to be signed in February. The purpose of the agreements is to ensure a continued, professional and commercial cooperation with fur manufacturers in these areas. - The agreements attract much attention from the official China, because we are helping the Chinese furriers to become even more competitive by strengthening their understanding of international business and by adding further value to the products via fashion knowledge and new techniques. We hope that the Chinese manufacturers learn to appreciate our fine skin qualities, says Rikke Dalsgaard, who looks forward to carrying through these changes in a Sales Organization that counts 36 employees with some 650 years of experience.

The Danish Radio Girls’ Choir gave a concert in The Danish Church in London in November partially sponsored by Kopenhagen Fur.
The church was filled with people all present to hear girls choir and see them perform.
- I was very impressed. They moved around in every corner of the church singing Danish Christmas carols and classic songs, says head of Customers Department Brian Tufvesson from Kopenhagen Fur.
The choir, that was established in 1938, consists of 40 girls aged 16-21. Countess Alexandra, the patroness of the choir, accompanied them to London.
The choristers were all wearing red fur hearts by Kopenhagen Fur during the concert. The big Christmas tree in the church was decorated with fur as well.

For the first time ever, a male Top Lot was for sale at a Kopenhagen Fur auction. The buyer of the 50 Glow Velvet Kopenhagen Purple quality skins was Mr. Kam Lam from K C Enterprises, who was surprised to find male skins as a Top Lot. He bargained well and bought the skins for 450 DKK per skin. - Male skins are not only for the Russians, he said and revealed that the skins most likely are going to be used in some promotion garment. Mr. Kam Lam also bid for the female Top Lot that consisted of White Velvet skins, but he had to let it go to Mr. Tony Yu, who took the female Top Lot on behalf of Wai May Fur & Fashion Co. Ltd. at a price of 400 DKK per skin. Mr. Yu has been a Kopenhagen Fur customer for more than 20 years, and the December Top Lot became his second Top Lot buy in Copenhagen. The skins are likely to be used for a promotion garment, he said.

Harbin International Fur City (HIFC) was in December awarded Kopenhagen Fur Certified Boutique by Kopenhagen Fur. The ceremony was celebrated by a joint fashion show and the appearance of Hong Kong celebrity Ms. Michele Lee along with over 400 guests and 12 of the most important media in the region.
The certification is only another proof of HIFC’s leading position in the local market. Invested by KC Fur of Hong Kong, HIFC’s modern façade stands out in a prime location for affluent residents. The inside is covered with trendy decorations and a convenient floor layout. From 5 February to 13 June 2010 more than 100 pieces from the Merzbacher Collection will adorn the walls of Louisiana Museum of Modern Art at the exhibition ‘Colour in art’. The pieces have been selected with colour as the cue and in dialogue with a number of works from Louisiana’s collection. - The exhibition is a true horn of plenty and we had the exceptional chance freely to pick out pieces from one of the worlds finest private art collections, says curator at Louisiana Helle Crenzien. The Merzbachers’ astounding collection of art is one of the biggest
private collections in the world and reveals the variety of ways in which colour has been used by European artists in the 20th century. The heart of the collection began 30 years ago, but its roots go even further back to Gabrielle Merzbacher’s grandfather, Bernhard Mayer, who was an affluential fur merchant in Zurich. He began purchasing modern paintings from famous artists like Cézanne, Picasso and Van Gogh that the Merzbachers later inherited. - When I first saw his paintings I thought “if I ever become successful, I will collect paintings.” And so it

PersonaLity refLeCting PaintingsHe was born in Germany in 1928, but like so many other Jews, his life changed dramatically after Kristallnacht. He was sent with a children’s transport to Switzerland by his parents, who later on died in Auschwitz. Werner Merzbacher stayed in Switzerland for 10 years and got his education with the help of scholarships. In 1949 he emigrated to the United States where he met Gabrielle Mayer and entered the firms New York furriers and Mayer and Hoffmann. His difficult childhood had a deep impact on which genre of art he liked. - When you collect art, I guess you collect by your own character. The art expresses who you are. When I was young I bought more sombre and political paintings. Now I really appreciate colours, Werner Merzbacher says.
sharing suCCess and PassionWerner Merzbacher and his wife
returned to Switzerland in 1964 and Werner Merzbacher became sole owner of the international fur traders Mayer and Cie. Ever since he has played a big role in the fur trade and he has been a valued customer at Kopenhagen Fur for more than 50 years not missing one single auction as far as he can recall. Werner Merzbacher’s great success enables him to seriously purchase his
passion of colourful paintings. He likes to share this passion with other people and is very happy to exhibit his paintings in Louisiana which he thinks is one of the most beautiful museums in the world with its nature surroundings. - I really appreciate if other people enjoy my paintings. That is the reason why I lend them out for exhibitions, Werner Merzbacher says.

Over the past two months, representatives from Kopenhagen Fur’s sales organization have been visiting customers and manufacturers throughout China, presenting the possibility of new business opportunities between Kopenhagen Fur and the manufacturing areas. This initiative was followed up by signing ceremonies in November with Chinese manufacturers and Mr. Torben Nielsen, CEO of Kopenhagen Fur, together with Mrs. Rikke Dalsgaard, CSO of Kopenhagen Fur. The first signing took place in Haining where Kopenhagen Fur and Haining China Leather Market signed a future-oriented agreement for the advancement of local fur industry in the region. Three years ago Kopenhagen Fur and Haining China Leather Market formalized cooperation on training of sales staff, sharing design resources, and conducting joint marketing campaigns. In autumn 2008 they staged a fashion show of Haining styles in Copenhagen for European audience and media. This time the new agreement targets the manufacturers. Kopenhagen Fur will organize education locally in Haining, as well as in Kopenhagen Studio
in Copenhagen and at the Tsinghua University-Kopenhagen Studio in Beijing, for entrepreneurs and senior management of fur companies. The education will not only give participants thorough understanding of the auction procedures in Kopenhagen Fur, but will also introduce them to modern marketing, branding and general management knowledge. - The post-financial crisis era will be even more competitive than before. It’s not enough to be competitive in quality and price, said Mr. Torben Nielsen, CEO of Kopenhagen Fur. - The fur manufacturers must enhance their competitiveness through design, marketing and general management. Accordingly, this is the focus areas where we will work together with the Chinese manufacturers. When we help our business partners to grow, then Kopenhagen Fur will grow too. Haining China Leather Market is the largest fur coat retail and wholesale centre in the world, housing over 300 well-equipped fur shops. Last year a total of 150,000 fur coats were sold, and two thirds of them were made of Kopenhagen Fur skins. The business opportunities
within this area are great. As an example, the turnover on the day before the signing ceremony was 70 million yuan (approx. DKK 60 million). Haining China Leather Market expects to copy its combo market model in selected cities of China. The first one will be unveiled in northern China’s Liaoning Province, a 170,000 square metre market holding 300 fur shops and 200 leather shops. Further, a coming new market in Haining will add 200 new fur shops to the Haining area, i.e. a total of 500 new fur shops by Haining China Leather Market next year, meeting a demand of 250,000 fur coats. Beijing is on the radar, too. The company has completed restructuring into a holding company and is scheduled to complete a listing on the Chinese stock exchange in January 2010. Mr. Ren Youfa, chairman of the board of Haining China Leather Market, warmly embraces the new agreement. - The new cooperation agreement extends the partnership into education and services for manufacturers. It comes at the right time and will help our local industry to grow further.

WorLd exhiBition ProMotes danish vaLuesWhen Kopenhagen Fur participates as a national partner at Expo 2010 Shanghai, it is partly to emphasize its engagement with the Chinese design industry and cultivate valuable contacts, and partly with the expectation that Expo will ultimately provide a greater understanding of Danish values and hence competitive advantage in the lucrative Chinese market. Expo Shanghai 2010 is the world’s largest exhibition ever, and the Danish Government’s contribution to the exhibition is record high. According to Torben Nielsen, Managing Director of Kopenhagen Fur, Denmark’s presence at Expo is a valuable long-term marketing and he is a keen supporter of the massive Danish Expo participation. - We expect that the Expo in the long term will focus on the cultural and commercial values that are the basis for
many Danish companies. It is values that Denmark can be proud of and which the government should promote. For they can certainly give Danish industry an edge in the highly competitive Chinese market, says Torben Nielsen. Kopenhagen Fur is a global company with its main focus on the Chinese market. obsessed with wealth. He falls into the arms of the
devil himself, who prepares the way for the young
man’s decline into poverty and madness. The
demonic-comic opera was composed in 1951 as a
melodically extravagant paraphrase over the styles
of classical composers, with a Stravinsky twist.
The Rake’s Progress is performed in English with
Danish subtitles.

MirÓ - i WorK LiKe a gardener
ARKEN’s exhibition focuses on the last twenty
years of Miró’s life when increasingly he was
experimenting with the medium of sculpture. We
are introduced to the artist’s wondrous universe
through painting, sculpture and drawing.
All works are on loan from Fondation Maeght in
Saint-Paul-de-Vence in southern France that owns a
unique Miró collection.

CoLour in art
Louisiana has been given the unique opportunity to
take its pick of one of the world’s very finest private
collections of art, the Swiss Werner and Gabrielle
Merzbacher’s rich collection. The works have been
selected with colour as the cue, and in a dialogue
with a number of works from Louisiana’s collection
together forming an exhibition of colour in art and
the many discussions of colour up to the present
day.
The exhibition will feature more than 100 works –
including nine Kandinsky works.

KOPENHAGEN FUR auCtion sCheduLe and offering 2009/10
In the season 2009/2010 Kopenhagen Fur
expects to offer a total of 17.9 million mink
skins which is reduced by approx. 600,000
skins on last season’s figures. The Danish
mink production will decline by approx. 4%.
Pearl, White, Sapphire, Pastel and Cross
mink will be reduced most, but also Black is
declining in number. The number of skins
in Mahogany, Brown and Glow will increase
marginally, while Silverblue will rise by ap-
prox. 12%.
The great demand for the Velvet quality has
had the effect that a large part of the mink
production has been diverted to this type
while the production of longhaired mink
skins is being reduced.
For each of the five scheduled auctions
there will be a varied offering of the qualities
Platinum, Burgundy, Ivory and Quality A.
The qualities I and II will also be offered.
Purple, Kopenhagen Fur’s top quality, will
be offered at the auctions in February, April
and June, and top lots will be sold at all
three auctions.
