Jeetu Nanda, President

Letter From The PresidentDear Alumni and Friends of KIS,

It is that time of the year again where I have an opportunity to engage you all with updates on KFI and KIS, sharing information and soliciting your help in embarking on projects to help Kodaikanal International School and Kodaikanal community.

This year saw the sad demise of Gene Hennig the founder president of KFI. Any amount of praise for the way Gene lived his life is inadequate. His obituary is a fine testament to a remarkable man (http://www.startribune.com/gene-hennig-no-bucket-list-needed-after-a-life-of-adventure-and-caring/324021491/). KFI is honored to have been associated with Gene and I would like to express my personal gratitude for Gene and all his efforts.

Another transition happened this year when after six years of service Jerry Nichol retired as Executive Director, and after a selection process, handed over the reins to his daughter Julie Nichol Stengele in July.

We have a dynamic KFI Board with the addition of Mary Coleman Lowry taking over the Treasurer responsibilities, along with newly elected members Akshay Birla and Stan Kuruvilla adding finance and legal expertise to the mix. Akshay is a graduate of Woodstock and this will help re-ignite collaboration with our sister school.

With the transition, we continue to embark on the journey to enhance interaction and engagement of KFI with all our alumni. We have voted to have KFI board meetings in different areas of the country where alumni chapters would be able to arrange a chapter meeting/ gathering and have an opportunity to meet Board members and promote their ideas and interests in Kodaikanal.

In the spirit of transparency, included in this newsletter is the audited financial statement of KFI. Please let us know if you have any suggestions and/or comments regarding the financial statement.

As a member of the KIS Council, I’m delighted to report the school is doing well under the leadership of Corey Stixrud. We received certification by the Council of International Schools moving KIS to the elite group of schools in the world to work collaboratively to shape international education while inspiring development of global citizens by connecting ideas, cultures and educators from around the globe. We also joined the Green Alliance of Schools and continue to move towards promoting stewardship of our natural resources in our community.

The number of enrolled students has slipped, but plans are in place to improve this. The Ganga Campus is up and operational and middle school students reside in the new dorms in Westover. There are now nine alumni on the KIS Council, which I believe, is the most we have ever had.

I would be happy to elaborate on any of these exciting advances. Please join the Kodaikanal Friends International page on Facebook to get additional information, or feel free to contact me directly.

I conclude by wishing you and your family a very blessed holiday season and encourage you to join KFI in promoting and preserving the KIS experience for upcoming generations.

Dear Alumni and Friends of Kodai School!

I am delighted to be writing to you again - to be back working in support of Kodai School and its alumni! I am encouraged by the warm welcome extended by so many of you and also the reports coming out of the school.

KFI has moved its operations from Pennsylvania to New Hampshire. While KFI’s email address remains the same, other contact details have changed: 353 Kings Highway, New Durham, NH 03855 USA Phone: 603-998-7471 | Fax: 603-515-1494

It is exciting to be part of KFI and be involved in an organization that gives scholarships to students, making it possible for them to study at KIS and have that special Kodai experience! In my introductory KFI Board meeting, we were able to approve each grant request received because of your support and your gifts to KFI. In 2014-15, the following grants were made:

• Excellence in Education/KFI Scholarship $19,430

• Russell De Valois Memorial Scholarship 10,025 (Classes of 1943 and 1944)

• Marilyn Scudder Scholarship (Classes of 1956 and 1955) 6,000

• Aung-Thwin/Reble Scholarship (Class of 1964) 6,150

• Keith & Marcine DeJong Scholarship: 2 music student awards 6,000 and support for the music trip to Mumbai

• KIS Global Education Scholarship 2,570

• Music: funded Paul Jaikumar’s training to repair the chapel organ 2,185 with Rollie Rutz Organ Builder in MN

• Pipe Organ: paid for the purchase of the organ in the KIS chapel 13,530

• Social & Environmental Experience: purchased smokeless stoves 7,600 for homes in Kodai (MN Chapter)

• Poondi Solar Panels: funded solar panels for the watchmen’s 4,000 houses at Poondi (Class of 1966)

• Total Grants given in 2014-15 $77,490

If you have an idea for a project your class, dorm mates, or family would like to fund, please get in touch. There are numerous ways we can support our alma mater: Highclerc, Kodai School, Kodaikanal International School. I hope you will join me in working together to support the educational mission of KIS.

I’m thankful for my father, Jerry Nichol FS, who along with our predecessors Jane Cummings ‘56, Ellie Carman Macfarlane MacDonald ‘54, and Pete Jenks FS, set things up so well for KFI, and for daring to dream of ways to continue supporting our school and the community of Kodaikanal.

Sincerely,

Julie Nichol Stengele ‘80, FS 93-05 and 06-10Executive Director/Development Officer

From Our Executive Directors

Dear Fellow KIS Alumni in North America,

Thank you; thank you; thank you! Thank you for the encouragement, trust and support you gave to KFI during my six-year term with Kodai Friends International. When we present our five loaves and two fish individually they don’t appear to amount to much. However, when multiplied, they bring blessing to many. Imagine what benefits the students and alumni of Kodaikanal International School would receive from the support of 100% North American Alumni and Friends of KIS. No gift is too small to be multiplied.

When I spoke by phone with former KFI President, Gene Hennig, a few days prior to his death, he expressed his confidence that he had left KFI in good hands. In my retirement in June 2015 I have that same confidence in the new leadership. My desire and hope is that you will give Jeetu, Julie and all the other KFI Board members your wholehearted support in the years to come! Thank you!

Jerry Nichol FS 72-98 and 00-01
