WILLIAMS-GRAND CANYON LODGE No. 38
Williams, AZ - The Lodge on Route 66 rolled out the
red carpet and treated us to a fantastic dinner. Wor-
shipful Master Danny Harness and his crew pulled out
all the stops.
This Lodge is right off Historic Route 66 and has a
ton of history. Thanks to our Masonic brethren for
their hospitality.

ANNOUNCEMENTS & OTHER THINGS
NOBLE SOCIETY OF FREEMASONS
“We are Freemasons! The word is a compound of two separate words, “Free”
and “Mason.” The freedom of one’s mind is at the core of who we are. This freedom
of mind encompasses freedom of worship, freedom of thought, freedom of action,
freedom from ignorance, freedom from extremism, and freedom from tyranny. We
are speaking of “enlightened freedom” or “Liberty,” not the vulgar freedom to simply
do whatever one wants. The second word “Mason” emphasizes the concept of build-
ing; building a better self , a better community, and indeed, a better world. In other
words, as Freemasons we stand for enlightened individual freedom and (we) encour-
age the building of the temple of humanity. The institution that binds together is a
Society and not an organization … We are the Noble Society of Freemasons.

FOUNDATION STONE
Until the development of steel-frame construction in the 20th Century, most buildings were erected by stack-
ing stone on stone. Each part of the building was marked by ceremonies. The foundation stone was the first stone
placed underground at the beginning of the building’s foundation. The cornerstone was the first stone placed above
ground level—its is a large stone, marking the northeast corner of the building.
The ceremonies of placing those stones were under the direction of the stonemasons who built the building,
although the highest officials of the church and state usually participated, including the king or his representative.
These ceremonies were occasions for public celebrations and fairs, each marking the
progress of the construction. Cornerstones have played an important role in the his-
tory of the United States as well as Europe. George Washington laid the cornerstone
of the nation’s Capital building, both in his role as President of the United States and
as a Freemason. Before that, Benjamin Franklin, while Grand Master of Pennsyl-
vania, established the tradition beginning with the cornerstone laying of the state
house in Philadelphia.
