Becket Keys Open Events

Over the past three weeks Becket Keys has welcomed over a thousand families to the school so that they could take a tour, find out about the facilities on offer and listen to Mr Scott-Evans’s talk to parents and potential students about the faith filled, academic journey that was on offer to them as part of the Becket Keys family. Teachers, students and support staff have all given up their free time in order to promote the school. Visitors were able to observe drama rehearsals, listen to talented students play music, join in with food technology and science lessons, play basketball in the Sports Hall and try some wonderful food samples in the Bistro. The school has had the most wonderful positive feedback from the many visitors about how helpful they found the students and staff, and how enthusiastic the tour guides were and there were many comments about the friendly atmosphere around the school.

Dear Sir/Madam,

We attended the open evening tonight and just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed it.

We had Demi from year 9 and Tom from year 7, although Tom had to leave us early to take another family around, he was a lovely boy!

Demi was wonderful! We all loved her! I worry for my daughter who has recently been diagnosed with Asperger’s, and she struggles to make and maintain friendships, but Demi put my mind at rest assuring me that all the children are so friendly and all make friends easily. This was evident with her interactions with every other student and teacher that we came across. There was a lovely girl in the Mandarin department who showed my daughters how to write hello in the language and she is off to China in a few weeks, she was absolutely lovely and so good with my girls.

The teachers really got involved with my daughters and especially in the Science department, they had a fantastic evening!

I have been on a lot of tours and this was the best, I always look to what the students and teachers are like to judge a school, and yours are a credit to you.

I just wanted to let you know how fantastic your students are and to say well done to Demi.

Many thanks,

C.V. x

Mandarin Trip

Tonbridge School

The Year 10 students who have just started their GCSE Mandarin course had the opportunity to visit another school who also study the subject. The aim was to see how other schools teach Mandarin, and learn from other students and teachers. After our successful visit, Mr Wu, Head of Mandarin at Tonbridge school, said he would like to bring some of his students to visit our school in the future.

“The visit to Tonbridge school was absolutely amazing. I could not believe what I saw when I stepped out of the mini bus. I saw an astonishing 15th Century building staring back at me. Once we got into the classroom, the teaching was

good, the teacher, Mr Wu, was a very passionate teacher and he believed in his students. (But he is not as good as Mrs Zhao). The way that Tonbridge school teach their students is very different, for example, they do a lot of their lessons from the text book whereas Mrs Zhao teaches from her knowledge and her experience. Overall I think that the visit to Tonbridge School was very useful. “

Oliver Legon – 10PP

“Our trip was a very interesting insight to other schools in the country who learn Mandarin. The school is very different to ours but we still all worked together in our Mandarin lessons. There were some similarities in the lessons which was good, as even though they are a private school, we learn the same sort of curriculum. In the afternoon, we went on a tour of the school. It was very impressive. We were all quite surprised by the amount of subjects and sports they offered, and were amazed by the grounds. Overall, I really enjoyed the trip.”

Berlin History

TripYear 11

On Sunday night, Year 11 History students returned from a busy 3-day trip to Germany’s capital, Berlin. They were there to trace the footsteps of some of Europe’s most significant historical events, to improve their knowledge of both the Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany, in preparation for their GCSE exam, through an array of guided tours and learning activities.

The visit proved a great success with students displaying great enthusiasm for the arduous trip schedule and getting used to long walks, early rises and late nights!

On arrival at Berlin’s Menninger hotel we met Steve, our excellent guide for the three days. With the aid of glorious sunshine, we began with a walking tour

around some of the most important landmarks in Berlin, including the Reichstag and the Brandenburg Gate, as we learn about Germany during the First World War and the emergence of the new Weimar Republic. In the afternoon, students were given the freedom to explore the Jewish memorial, before visiting the site of Hitler’s Bunker. After dinner, students explored the awe-inspiring roof terrace and dome of the Reichstag building designed by British architect, Norman Foster, in 1990.

Day two and students were up early to catch a train to the Berlin Wall Memorial Site where they learn how close the world came to nuclear Armageddon in the 1960s, then on to the German Historical Museum. Students were able to see an array of exhibits that charted Hitler’s rise to power, including the use of propaganda and terror methods employed by the infamous Gestapo. Weary but resilient, the group continued on to the Bebelplatz, to learn about the Nazi book burning of May 1933

before returning to the hotel for a well-earned dinner and rest.

Day three began with a journey by train and bus to the north of Berlin to visit the sombre Sachsenhausen concentration camp at Oranienburg. This proved a testing experience for all, reflecting on Nazi methods of terror and fear as a tool of control prior to and during WWII. The site of the crematorium which used to burn the many thousands of primarily political prisoners is one that will live with us all for many years. The exposure to all this history meant students felt a real sense of the tragedy of the period, and Steve and staff alike were impressed with their sensitivity and intelligent questioning. In the afternoon, we were ready for some much lighter entertainment, with a visit to Alexanderplatz for some shopping and a well-deserved Currywurst – well for Mr Goldstein and I at least!

The students were a credit to the school, displaying impeccable behaviour, asking intelligent questions and eliciting positive comments from Steve. I am sure they will remember this trip for many years to come. Mr D. Braniff

On Wednesday 5th October, a number of coaches arrived at the school to take Year 9 and 10 students to a Careers Fair in Thurrock.

The fair included a large number of stalls promoting many different exciting careers and university courses. Students were able to gain more information on a number of opportunities, including a career in engineering, the army, music and much more.

All students had a fantastic time, exploring the different options available to them and discussing the GCSEs they would need to in order to pursue different careers.

Students were also presented with a range of merchandise, including pens and bags and also had the opportunity to win prizes by taking part in different competitions as they walked around.

The students were excited about the range of opportunities available to them. We hope this event has inspired the students to strive towards the career they deserve. Miss S. Ellis

Netball Year 8 & 9

On Tuesday 4th October 2016 Becket Keys entered the district netball tournament for the first time since the school opened. The team included students from years 8 and 9 who played against 4 other teams. The top 2 teams from the pool would go through to the next round of the national competition. Players included Isla Bradley, Molly Whymark, Bethany Mayo, Emily Barrett, Rebecca Sharp, Amelia Walker, Ella Brook, Maria Gamble and Scarlett Day.

We entered this competition without knowing the standard we would be playing against but we believed that our girls were skilled enough to face any team. The standard was extremely high but the team matched this standard performing to the best of their ability for four games in a row. We had victories against William De Ferrers and St Martins, drew against Boswells School and lost against New Hall School. This

meant we drew with a team for second place in our pool. Unfortunately for our team, the other team won on goal difference and so they progressed to the second round.

Despite this close call, our students performed fantastically and showed excellent team work throughout. We look forward to our next opportunity to take part in national level sport.

Netball Year 9 On Monday the 3rd of October, Becket Keys played a match against Hylands School. The match began well with Becket Keys making timely interceptions and dominating the court. As the game played out, it became clear that the opposition were improving with each quarter. The game was a tough match and both teams played very well. Becket Keys managed to retain their lead and won the game 5-7. Well done and congratulations to Emily Barratt, Rebecca Sharp, Isla Bradley, Molly Whymark, Bethany Mayo, Georgina Loader, Rosie Howse and Elizabeth Endicott.

Netball Year 10 On Thursday 29th September, the Year 10 netball team competed in the district netball rally at St Martins School. The girls had a tough first two matches against St Martins and

Brentwood School and although there was some great defending from Divine and Holli, the teams were too strong for us. In our third game, we played against Anglo and the girls played some excellent netball, combining well in the centre third and the goal third. The intricate play between Grace Burrell, Lauren Pamenter and Rebecca Stroud helped to produce a victory. In their final game against Ursuline, the girls continued to play well, and were unlucky to lose against some quality individual players. Well done to the whole team, also consisting of Rachael Davison, Alice Keely, Mia Ballantyne and Scarlet Mellor.

Football Year 8 Becket Keys kicked off their season away to Moulsham and, unfortunately, couldn’t quite find the result that their performance deserved. Becket Keys found themselves 0-1 down early into the game as they failed to track their man at a corner. However, good play further up the field led to a chance for Sam Donovan, who was clipped inside the area and a penalty was given. Sam stepped up and coolly slotted the penalty home to make it 1-1. Seconds before half time, a lapse in concentration at the back let a simple header breakthrough for the opposition forward and he duly obliged to put Moulsham 2-1 up at half time.

The second half saw a completely different performance from Becket Keys as they dominated possession and were playing great football further up the pitch. The introduction of Will Horne into centre midfield helped reignite the team and Sonny Parnell was shifted to centre back from there he was able to control the game. The Moulsham keeper made several impressive saves and their defence came through when they somehow saved a looping header from Cederick Asante on the line. Becket Keys continued to press but it wasn’t to be as Moulsham managed to grab a late goal on the counter attack to win 3-1. Man of the Match: Sam Donovan

Swimming GCSE swimming continues on Monday, students will be assessed as part of their final exam.
