KEYNSHAM & DISTRICT TWINNING ASSOCIATION
Keynsham’s twinning with Libourne, on the River Dordogne in South West France, goes back to 1978. The association are a friendly group of local residents who meet regularly with an aim to foster good relationships with our French neighbours and promote greater cultural awareness. Libourne has a population of 22,500 slightly more than the population of Keynsham which is now 16,000. Libourne sits very closely to the River Dordogne and is surrounded by miles of vineyards. We are always looking for new members, if you would like to be involved please do not hesitate to contact us. The new Keynsham Town Council news magazine.
We hope you will all enjoy the new format of the quarterly newsletter, which is delivered to every household. We wanted to fi nd a more exciting and interesting way of communicating with you all. We are keen to publicise news of any group or event, so please contact us.
These are extraordinarily exciting times for our Town with the Town Centre regeneration likely to start in the autumn and plans for the Cadbury site taking shape.
We hope to see many of you at the Music Festival on Sunday 1st July and at the many events in the Town in the week prior to the festival. We are sure it will be another huge success.
Keynsham in Bloom entries must be in by 22nd June and we are hoping to build on our initial successes last year in South West in Bloom where the Town won a silver award. In September we will be holding a second Youth Fest and we are hoping that as many youth groups as possible will take part.
We are fortunate that the Battle for the Winds vehicle will make its last stop at the festival. This art project will be based in Weymouth during the summer to celebrate the Olympic sailing event.

DANCE – FOR THE OVER 60’SCome along; stretch, loosen, relax and dance your body awake for the over 60s. KEYNSHAM PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETYThe Keynsham Photographic Society is a well-established society that was formed in Bristol in the 1950s and then re-located to Keynsham.They are a small friendly club of approximately twenty fi ve members and welcome all who are interested in all aspects of photography including; fi lm, colour, black and white and digital. Their programme comprises lectures, practical and studio evenings, competitions, member’s nights and photographic outings. The Society is also a member of the WCPF which is the Western Counties Photographic Federation which comprises ninety eight photographic clubs and societies covering a large geographical area of the South West Region. The Society meet from September to April so the 2011-2012 season has just come to an end. YOUTH festKeynsham Town Council organising the second year of Keynsham Youth Fest “is to provide an event for Keynsham Youth” and to celebrate young people and promote the positive activities and opportunities they can and do participate in.
Youth Fest will allow the many youth organisations (with members aged 7 years upwards) of Keynsham to come together to show off their skills and talents. Our programme includes dance and musical performances on the bandstand, sporting organisations giving displays, a selection of stalls with youth groups promoting their organizations, free inflatables, a large inflatable football pitch provided by Somerset FA on behalf of Keynsham Town Junior Football Club, skateboarding and scooter exhibitions and competitions run by Crucial BMX.
One of the supporters of this year Youth Fest is the Quest for 2012 project (which is funded by Bath and North East Somerset Council and Future Bath Plus).Quest is about encouraging young people and communities to mark 2012 as a special year with projects and activities that “make a local difference”. Keynsham Youth Service and Quest are planning youth volunteering and training to support young people to join in and take a lead.
Quest are also providing a touring performance by Battle of the Winds that opens celebrations of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Sailing events in Weymouth (July 26th-28th), created and produced by Cirque Bijou and the Desperate Men, in collaboration with seven lead artists gathered from across the South West plus the integrated performance company Breathe. Keynsham Youth Fest will mark the last performance of the Battle for the Winds South West tour including circus skills and their unique cycle powered wind machine a “flatbed” man powered vehicle as a portable stage.We hope to have a youth led parade to launch the festival, marshalled through the High Street that would include the Battle of the Winds cycle powered vehicle. The parade will be a showcase of our talent with young people on scooters, BMX, drummers and dancers.

COMMUNITY@67Community@67, based in the heart of the community in Keynsham’s Park Estate and serving residents across Keynsham and beyond, is a volunteer-led community centre with residents at its heart. The range of activities on offer is inclusive and available to all from young mothers and youngsters to job seekers and retired residents. Based at 67 Queens Road, Keynsham, Community@67 already offers a shop, café, free IT classes and internet café, job seekers and mentoring clubs, book club and crafts. A maths homework club for Year 5 and 6 students starts soon on Wednesday afternoons 4-5pm, with further activities planned including quiz and Scrabble events. 2386 SQUADRON – AIR TRAINING CORPSThe 2386 Squadron are an organisation dedicated to helping young people succeed through adventure training, aviation and drill. The 2386 Squadron has 40 cadets who meet at the TA Centre every Tuesday and Friday from 1845 until 2115. The squadron is organised into 3 fl ights, A, B and C. It is organised in this way to enable interfl ight competitions to take place in as many activities as possible. The more a cadet participates and achieves the more points they will earn for their fl ight. There is access to a shooting range, local fl ying and gliding and many sporting and adventurous activities. There is usually at least one additional activity taking place on a weekend a month. FEAR HALLFear Hall is located in the town of Keynsham. The main hall, which can seat up to 120 people, is an excellent venue for meetings, craft fairs, jumble-sales, small scale stage shows or presentations etc. There are two smaller function rooms also available which are suitable for club or group meetings. FRY’S HOCKEY CLUBFry’s Hockey Club has been established for over 30 years. The club house is Fry Club on the grounds of the Cadbury factory in Keynsham with their home games being played at Wellsway School. Fry’s Hockey Club off ers hockey for the whole of Keynsham and beyond. It is the only club in the local area, off ering the three ladies’ teams, two men’s’ teams and a mixed team. The club welcomes players of all ages and abilities through their range of teams.Through the clubs three year development plan they are hoping to encourage young people to take up hockey as a great way of being active, meeting new people and developing as team members. In England over 2 million people play football on a regular basis so it’s no wonder that the Town Council have embraced one of our nations favourite sports and manage the Manor Road football pitches for the community to enjoy.
There are fi ve pitches with changing facilities at Manor Road which can be booked for the season. Sunday mornings are particularly popular and the Town Council have stipulated that priority over the pitches must be given to Keynsham teams as well as those that have played the longest at Manor Road. The Town Council are so passionate about our local football teams that a discount of up to 40% is given to those adult teams booking for the season as opposed to adult teams booking from outside Keynsham, there is also discounts available to local Junior teams and those local teams wishing to book on a per match basis.

FRIENDS OF MANOR ROAD COMMUNITY WOODLANDManor Road Community Woodland, owned by Bath & North East Somerset Council, lies on the eastern edge of Keynsham and close to Saltford Parish. It is managed by the council in partnership with the Friends of Manor Road community group. Since 1993, with grant aid from the Forestry Commission, over 19 000 trees and shrubs have been planted on the 21-hectare site. In 2005 a 4-hectare wildfl ower meadow was sown and the site was declared a Local Nature Reserve.The ‘Friends’ group carry out monthly task days in the wood when they work on; stone wall building, bulb planting, footpath work, coppicing, pond clearance and pruning. KEYFORD DANCING SCHOOLThe Keyford dancing School is now in its 38th year under the ownership of Patricia Veale, with its name deriving from KEYnsham and SaltFORD where the classes are held.Thousands of boys and girls, since 1973, have enjoyed classes in Ballet, Tap, Modern & Street Jazz. In the last few years they have been able to take part in the Opera & Ballet International in their productions at the Bristol Hippodrome and the Theatre Royal Bath. Hundreds of children have also appeared in the Fry Club Pantomimes and other local productions.Dance is a great way of keeping fi t and healthy. It also off ers many benefi ts that extend outside the dance studio; development of confi dence, creativity and building of teamwork skills. GIRL GUIDING IN KEYNSHAMGirl Guiding Keynsham District is a very active group of over 340 members who take part in a very exciting programme of activities in a unique, safe, girl-only space which is relevant to today’s girls. Their programme is designed so that the members work together in small groups, taking as many of their own decisions as possible about how they spend their time. The district off ers a number of sections to suit a number of age ranges; Rainbows for ages 5-7, Brownies for ages 7-10 and Guides for ages 10-14.Being a member of Girl Guiding gives you plenty of opportunities and the chance to explore your world and make a diff erence. Modern guiding believes in empowering girls and young women to make the right choices for themselves and those around them. Keynsham Methodist Church is situated over two sites in Keynsham, Queens Road Methodist Church & Victoria Methodist Church. Keynsham CemeteryKeynsham Cemetery is situated at Durley Hill, Keynsham. The cemetery is a peaceful and attractive resting place to serve the residents of Keynsham. The layout is designed to offer a range of internment choices such as lawn plots, traditional (kerb) plots, coffin burials, caskets of ashes and scattering of ashes. The Town Council aim to offer a sympathetic service to the bereaved and deals with enquiries from the public, funeral directors and monumental masons.
The cemetery is open to the public weekdays and weekends and an attendant is usually on duty Monday to Thursday 8am – 4pm and 3.30pm on Friday’s.

Dial-a-Ride is a door to door fully accessible minibus service for those who cannot use conventional public transport. People can use this service to go shopping, attend appointments, visit friends and play an active part in community life.The Dial-a-Ride service can be used for journeys within the Keynsham ward boundaries and any resident of Keynsham, Saltford and these villages who CAN NOT use conventional public transport is eligible to register for Dial-a-Ride. Nosey Parker – four experienced local musicians performing a lively and varied mix of rock, jazzy pop and reggae.Gavin Osbourne – singing about; love, nostalgia, break-ups, girls, burgers, clown-costumes, the cosmos and village stakeouts, Gavin Osborn brings his story-songs to Keynsham Music Festival for the very fi rst time.Waitress for the Bees – Emma Hooper’s solo project, using viola, accordion, saw, electronics, and vocals to play you quirky and aff ecting songs about dinosaurs that will make your heart hurt.Trish Brown – a distinctive style that fuses the best of original jazz and blues with funky overtones and sublime vocals.Bigtopp – an 8 piece ‘Horn-Stomping’ show from the South coast. With a heavily reggae-inspired set and some great jazzy moments on the sax this performance will keep you on your dancing feet. Three Kings High – with music rooted in Hip Hop, this band has incorporated a Soulful, Indie edge that has diversifi ed their sound to ensure that all types of crowds can enjoy and indulge in their versatile show.Some Velvet Morning – A stripped back power trio with a fi lthy bass, melodic vocals and a heavy back beat. This bands infl uences range from the Police, Fleetwood Mac and U2 with a little bit of White Stripes mixed in.Troy Ellis & the Hail Jamaica Reggae Band – likened to his father, Alton Ellis, in many ways, Troy is not your average performer. Mixing dance, vocals and a burning
desire to party like his audience. Backed by his very own Hail Jamaica Reggae Band consisting of seven musicians with a large horn section and extensive experience in Reggae and Ska music, this is the perfect band to end the night with.

Dada Shango play acoustic roots in a bluesy, folksy, africany, arabiany kind of a way.2:50-3:30pm Victoria Klewin and the Truetones – a 6-piece band from Bristol, performing a heady blend of vocally-driven blues, jazz and soul with both sparkling originals and restyled classics. 3:50-4:30pm Holika – It’s rare to come across such raw talent as this and it’s even more of a treat to sit down and listen to it. Holika are a breath of fresh air into this country’s music scene. 4:50-5:30pm Rainy and the Dust – afro- Latin, rock and reggae infl uenced grooves, infused with the positivity of Rainy’s lyrics and tied together by an eclectic and laid back musical style.5:50-6:30pm Baraka – a 5/6 piece World Music Band based in Bristol. They take their inspiration from the music of West Africa, South Africa, The Caribbean and Ireland, producing their own heady mix of global beats, intricate rhythms and soaring melodies. 6:50-7:30pm Anima Circus – in the last year Anima Circus have stomped with the likes of Babyhead, Yes Sir Boss, Congo Natty, The Resonators and Dub Pistols.

SOUTH WEST IN BLOOMIn conjunction with Keynsham In Bloom, the Town Council are entering the Town in the South West In Bloom competition. As this is a community event the Town Council is seeking local community groups that would be interested in supporting the Town Council with the Town’s entry. This competition not only judges the (town/village) entries on their floral/gardening/allotment expertise/ingenuity but judges areas like community spaces, river/conservation projects, activities such as clean ups and graffiti clearance projects that have been undertaken.
The theme for this year for both Keynsham In Bloom and South West in Bloom is ‘Celebration’ including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Olympics, the Seasons and nature. The planting schemes include colours such as pink, orange, blue, yellow, purple and green. Entrants are encouraged to consider this theme when planning their entry.

KEYNSHAM & SALTFORD LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETYThis Society was originally formed as a non-profit making voluntary organisation in 1965. It was concerned with researching and recording the history of the Keynsham and Saltford area. Since 1965 the Society has accumulated a large archive of photographs, documents, maps and transcripts from primary sources and newspaper articles. The society welcomes a variety of experienced speakers who give illustrated talks on a wide range of subjects.Membership of the Society is open to everyone who is interested in local history. The society runs from September to April so the 2011-2012 seasons just come to an end. KEYNSHAM ANGLING ASSOCIATIONKeynsham Angling Association was founded in 1903. It currently offers Coarse and Game fishing to over 450 Members at Century Ponds, on four miles of the River Chew and around five miles of the Bristol Avon. Century Ponds is a two-pond Carp and silver fish venue located at Stockwood Vale, Keynsham. It contains a good stock of Carp to mid-twenties. The venue is easy to access and holds a total of twenty six anglers and has ample on-site parking. The River Chew is classic roving water, featuring a good range of Coarse and Game fish. The Association Members are entitled to fish on three stretches of the Bristol Avon as part of the Club’s affiliation to the Bristol & West of England Federation of Anglers. The River Avon is an excellent all-round venue teeming with species including Bream, Chub, Roach, Carp, Pike, Barbel, Perch, Tench, Trout and Dace. KEYNSHAM BRASS BANDThere has been a brass band in Keynsham since before the Second World War. The original band was wound up in approximately 1975 and was then reformed in 1980.There are currently twenty five players in the band, ranging from sixteen to sixty years plus. Around fifteen of the players have been with the band for over ten years and some of these members have been with the band since it was reformed in 1980.The band has a varied repertoire, which leans away from the traditional brass band sound of marches and suites in favour of more contemporary arrangements. KEYNSHAM CRICKET CLUBThe Keynsham Cricket Club play in the Premier League of the West of England Club Cricket Championship and were Premier 1 Champions in 2002. They have a beautiful ground off the Wellsway in Keynsham and their Pavilion is open all year round with a bar and cooking facilities. 1. THE SNAKE The worst crime against skatepark etiquette. Don’t ride out of turn, taking no notice of how long others have been waiting to go. People who do this are normally seen acting like a spoiled kid or pushing in front of you at the bus stop. Make the most of being at the skatepark by all means, but let’s play nice and take it in turns eh?
2. THE CIRCLER Don’t be the person who keeps going in circles. You are not duty-bound to ride in circles which continually block anyone from being able to go. Use your eyes and check other peoples lines to make sure you are not on a collision course with a 20 stone BMXer.
3. THE UNSEEING Don’t look at your feet or follow your mates blindly about. Keep your eyes open and remember at busy times it is a good idea to stand back for a bit and see how other people use the space. It is not a good idea to stand next to a hip which another person is trying a trick over, they won’t be able to see you until they land on you. Oh, and if someone asks you not to stand somewhere it is probably for your own safety so don’t return to the same spot 5 seconds later.
4. SNAKE BROTHERSThis is a group of snakes which work together to prevent anyone else from using the bowl or anything else. And if you do manage to sneak your turn, get ready to feel their glaring eyes bore in to your skull. Don’t think the space is just for you and your mates; the park is open to all ages. Just make sure you use the park with the best of your abilities. So don’t try using the bowl if it’s the first time you’ve skated.
5. THE STANDER Resolutely they stand and cannot be moved from their chosen place. Normally a place between you and the rail, or the ledge, or the ramp.
6. THE SITTEROnce they stood tall, but now they sit. They sit on the edge of the ramp, ledge, grind box or on the rail itself and refuse to move when asked. They tend to invite their friends along for a long discussion who then join them sitting in the same spot, taking up more valuable riding space. We know more benches are needed but the concrete is for rolling on.
7. THE TRAFFIC DODGER Please don’t let your kids run about the skatepark as if through traffic on a dual carriageway. This is one of the biggest and busiest skateparks in the country, and has many talented riders who visit and can be going at quite a speed. If you want to run about kids go to the amazing adventure play park next door.
8. THE ABSENT PARENT These are the parents who drop their 8 year old child at the skatepark and then go home. Be responsible and supervise those who are young and encourage them to wear helmets and pads. They will only learn how to use the skatepark responsibly if encouraged to do so by their parents and from watching older more experienced riders. The skatepark is not a safe baby sitter. 9. THE WANDERER This is someone who lacks direction. Don’t ride ignorant of those about or the general pattern of traffic at the skatepark. You see the bank is situated so you can get speed as you ride towards the hip, and anyone caught between the bank and the hip is ‘in the way’, as they say. This has some of the same qualities as ‘the unseeing’. 10. THE MESSYThe worst thing to ride on is a sticky surface. Please keep all fizzy drinks, sweets, and especially spit, away from the concrete. Glass and other sharp matter should not be in the park as it is a danger to all users. Please use the bins provided and respect the area you are free to hang out in. It’s also cheaper to walk to the bin rather than litter and risk a £75 fine.

Keynsham SchoolsGARDENING CLUBThe children at Castle Primary School in Keynsham are changing their entire school grounds with the help of their dedicated caretaker and the gardening club.Not only are the club planting beautiful flowers around the school grounds to bring a smile to everyone’s face but they have also worked very hard to create fantastic allotments and potting shed so that they can grow their very own vegetables.The gardening club are growing potatoes, carrots, cabbage, lettuce, parsnips, strawberries and many, many more delicious vegetables and fruit. All of these are picked and used in the school kitchen.The gardening club are planting trees around the school as well as creating a very interesting conservation area around the school pond which enjoys frogs and also a family of ducks which visit regularly.Well done to every member of the gardening club, the school grounds look fantastic.

NEW PLAY OPPORTUNITY IS A QUALIFIED SUCCESS FOR SCHOOL’S LUNCHTIME TEAM
Staff at St Keyna Primary School in Keynsham have been awarded their first official play certificate with support from Bath & North East Somerset Council and the charity Children’s Scrapstore.
Following 15 hours of training from the Children’s Scrapstore, the school’s 10-strong team of lunchtime staff have successfully completed a playwork course endorsed at level 2 by the national organisation SkillsActive.
Bath & North East Somerset Council has loaned the school a Scrapstore PlayPod – a converted shipping container in the playground which is filled with fun, colourful materials designed to encourage children to play outside.
All contents are supplied by the Children’s Scrapstore which collects and reuses clean waste materials from local businesses, such as foam shapes, cardboard and plastic tubes and drums, netting and packaging.
Councillor Nathan Hartley, (Lib-Dem, Peasedown), Deputy Leader of Council and Cabinet Member for Early Years, Children and Youth, said: “This project is a huge asset to St Keyna School and the staff have embraced this opportunity to deliver a fantastic experience for the children. Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Play Policy supports children’s right to play both at school and in their communities. Research shows that children’s enjoyment of schools increases when they have a good experience of play; they get lots of physical outdoor activity, come back into class ready to learn and have time to build important friendships.”
Rob Sandel, Deputy Headteacher of St Keyna Primary School said that; “The introduction of the PlayPod has been a tremendously positive development for our school. Our children have really enjoyed the opportunities it has given them to get involved in a very wide variety of imaginative and creative play activities. Watching our oldest children working alongside some of our youngest to build shelters and dens has been great fun for everyone! As a school, we are very proud of our lunchtime staff for the commitment they have shown toward gaining this qualification, and look forward to continuing to build on the success our PlayPod has been thus far. We would also like to thank Councillor Brian Simmons for the assistance he has given to our school through the provision of his Ward Councillor Initiative grant.

Keynsham Allotment Association was established in 1987 to provide allotments to the community of Keynsham. The Association looks after 120 allotments at the site on Park Road, Keynsham. It is subsidized by Keynsham Town Council, which financially supports the Association with rent payments and major repairs that are needed at the site.The Association takes responsibility for allocation, inspection of allotments and maintenance and management of the site. Each allotment is approximately 150 square yards in size, and there is a water supply at the site.
