The early-year live entertainment calendar is thin. You’d think thatgiven these circumstances, Chicagomusic fans would be resigned to hibernating for a few weeks beforeventuring out again. But then they’dbe missing one of the musical highlights of the year.

That’s because every January, duringone of the quietest periods for livemusic in town, bluesman Buddy Guytakes a break from his busy touringschedule to give his hometown atreat, settling in for four weeks at hisSouth Loop club Legends (700 S.Wabash, 312.427.1190). The settingseems to energize the legendary guitarist as much as it does his legions of local fans, with raucousperformances in a compact roomthat go a long way toward heating up wintertime in Chicago.

Guy continues his annual January res-idency at Legends this week, takingthe stage Thursday through Sundaynights. Several shows have alreadysold out, so be sure to call ahead.
