DCON, or District Convention, is the last NE-IA convention of the Key Club year. This convention includes activities such as icebreakers, workshops to improve local Key Clubs, and social time to meet new people. In addition, District Convention is the place for district board officer elections. This convention is a great opportunity to become part of the NE-IA district board! It is also a place to share ideas and success with other Key Clubs as well as brainstorm new fundraiser ideas, icebreakers, or fun activities for Key Clubs to do in the future. This convention is a big help to plan for a great new Key Club year!

Governor’s Initiative

Hello Nebraska-Iowa Key Clubbers! My name is Mary LaPorte, and I am your 2014-2015 District Governor! I am very excited for our year in service together! I would like to take this opportunity to invite you all to participate in my Governor’s Initiative, to raise money for the Eliminate Project. "e Eliminate Project is a mission to rid the world of Maternal Neonatal Tetanus (MNT): an extremely painful disease that afflicts babies born in unsanitary conditions. It is completely preventable. My goal for Nebraska-Iowa is that all clubs raise $334 for the project. Each club that reaches this goal will help to completely vaccinate 185 mothers, so that none of her future children will contract MNT. Please bring this project back to your club, and consider raising money for this initiative! Summer is a great time to raise money through car washes, $re works stands, or ice cream

stands! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

"e Eliminate Project is one of the major partners of Key Club International. "e Eliminate Project helps rid third world countries of maternal and neonatal tetanus by providing vaccines to those in need. To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more than 100 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. "is requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled workers and much more. $110 million needs to be raised until MNT can be fully eliminated. $53,057,702.19 has been raised so far, and there are only 25 countries le% to eliminate MNT from. Another $67 million needs to be raised by 2015 to achieve the target goal. Keep up the good work and help eliminate!

"e 2013-2014 International Convention took place in Anaheim, California this past July. Like any good convention, this one started out with a giant sel$e. "roughout the convention, attendees had many opportunities to attend workshops, listen to speakers, and raise money for ELIMINATE. One of the most popular activities was the Dance for Eliminate which took place Saturday night. At ICON, the new International Board was elected, making last year’s International Trustee Maria Palazzolo the 2014-2015 International President and Kevin Zhang the International Vice President.

"e International Convention even had its own hashtag! To check out convention pictures on Twitter or Instagram, use the hashtag #KCCA14.

Tips for Planning Your Key Club Year Right

The first meeting; In planning your key club year, the first step is to get together with your officer team and make an outline or calendar of events and goals. This will help your team and club to stay organized and aware. Talk and plan to address what your club's needs are. Below are suggestions on what to address at this first officer meeting.

• Market Your Club - Members are the most important part of every key club. They make stuff happen! Market your club and get the word out to potential new members before school starts. Sustaining and gaining members will help you throughout your year. Make sure to start this early.

• Confirm Dates for Future Officer and Club Meetings- Decide what days will work best for everyone and stick to it. Be flexible with everyone's needs, but in the end have confirmed dates or a schedule for when the officers will meet. Also do this with whole club meetings. Everyone is busy; your club needs to have structure so that members are aware of meetings and are able to attend.

• Plan Events- Service is the reason for the club. Plan your service events! Talk about our preferred charities and local projects you can work on throughout the year. Plan on accomplishing at least two service projects a month. Visit the Key Club international website for good service project ideas. There are also many international events such as Eliminate week and Kiwanis One Day.

• Get the word out about District Key Club- Put District Events into your club's schedule! Area Rallies, DCON, and even ICON are great things to let members know about. Make sure these get onto your calendar.

• Create a communication system- Find a way to let everyone in the club get information. This can be through email, Facebook, or texting, but you must plan your way of communication. Decide who will be in charge of this and how often they need to use it. Communication is also important among the officers. Create a way to let everyone to know the current situation.

• Get In Contact with Your Community- Talk with your Kiwanis Family and community groups! Let them know your club wants to be involved.

Make this Key Club year great! 8

Service Projects Throughout the Year

• Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF: TOT is simple service project that is available to any club! All you need is a date, and some willing Key Clubbers. You are able to get TOT boxes sent to your club, just order them free of charge from the Key Club Store. Using your boxes you are able to go door-to-door and ask for donations. This project is a super simple way to raise money for the ELIMINATE Project.

• Leaf Rake: With a leaf rake you are able to serve all different kinds of people in your community. Choose a nice fall day and take some of your Key Clubbers around your community to help someone in need who are unable to rake, or just as an act of kindness.

Fall:

Winter:• Snow Shovel: Mirroring the Leaf Rake, grab some Key Clubbers and some shovels

and shovel the sidewalks and driveways of other community members. You can let these community members know where you’re from and help make Key Club a household name.

Spring:• Ditch Walk: Adopt a Highway as a club! Set a date to go clean up a ditch. You will

need some gloves, bags, and a few hours depending on how messy your ditch is, but your work will not go unnoticed. People recognize the work you do and they appreciate it. This project is also appropriate for Fall and Summer.

Any Time of Year:• Movie Night: Find a location, whether this be your school library or auditorium (if

one is available to you), set a date, and choose a movie. A movie night can be an easy way to raise money for your preferred charity or the ELIMINATE Project! Charge an admission fee then sell snacks, or even have a bake sale during the movie.

• Food Drive: Host a food drive in your school our in your community. While you’re collecting food work with a local food bank to find out when your club can stock it for even more service opportunities.

Rustic Pathways has now teamed up with Key Club International! Rustic Pathways is one of the newest co-sponsors to team up with Key Club international. Rustic Pathways is a program in which young adults can travel all around the world and experience new cultures while completing service projects in that area. While attending one of these programs you will eat the local cuisine, encounter local culture, and grow as a service individual. Rustic Pathways has joined with Key Club to organize 10 trips just for Key Clubbers! These trips have been scheduled for the 2014 year, but are being postponed until the year of 2015. Some of the special Key Club trips include Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Fiji, and many others! While on a Rustic Pathways trip you will be doing a specific job to give back world-wide. Whether it be a summer camp leadership program or building a school, Rustic Pathways has so many amazing opportunities for students just like you!

Helping children today will change the future of tomorrow. Since it’s beginning Key Club International has challenged members and clubs to create a lasting impact. This idea is d e m o n s t r a t e d t o d a y t h r o u g h t h e organization’s Major Emphasis Project, a focus adopted in 1946, “Children: Their future, our focus.” Key Club International pairs with many other organizations focused on youth in order to meet this goal. Promoting and Marketing Your Key ClubAs the 2014-2015 school year starts, getting your club “out there” is key (no pun intended). The bigger image your club has, the more that can be done within the school and community. Many people may not even know what key club is, so that’s a good place to begin. Start by making posters saying what Key Club is and what we do. Put those up in your school and places often visited in your community. Another great way to get your club known is by setting up a booth at a community event. These events could range from

sports events to bake sales; the more, the merrier. Within your school, raffles and scavenger hunts can get other students involved with your club, giving you the chance to promote what we are all about. If your club already has some influence, start to bring in other K-family members and work together. If you start promoting Builders Club, it will lead to member growth in both Builders Club and Key club. More members equals bigger projects with even more people to help! So this year, get your club out there and promoted!

YOF or Youth Opportunities Fund is an amazing resource available to any and all Key Clubbers. Essentially this is a pool of money that you can apply for through an easy application that is reviewed. Once approved, the money from YOF is intended to fund service projects that you might not otherwise be able to have. Scholarships for high schoolers are also taken from the Youth Opportunities Fund. Key Club International encourages everyone to not be held back by financial limitations which is why the YOF was created, so you can better serve your home, school, and community. Take advantage of this great opportunity to help fund your great service idea!
