Key Concept Description

Self-Awareness Self-awareness is the ability to accurately recognize one’s own emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence behavior. In this unit, we will explore the following concepts: strengths and opportunities, self esteem, identifying emotions, and self-efficacy (voice).

Self-Management Self-management is the ability to successfully regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in different situations. In this unit, we will explore the following self-management concepts: self expression, self-control, stress management, and calming strategies.

Life Values Life values are beliefs that guide our actions and behaviors. They are the behaviors that help us lead successful lives and relationships. Life values shape our decisions and help to determine our choices. We will focus on three of our twelve in the unit: being respectful, listening and following directions, and not hurting others inside or out (no hurts).

Manners Our bodies do gross things that we cannot always control. However, we can use manners to excuse ourselves or show respect for those around us when our bodies unexpectedly make noises or smells!

Healthy Behaviors When we understand what is going on in our bodies, it is easier to stay healthy. Sneezing into a Kleenex or your bent elbow, eating right to help your digestive system, and covering wounds with band aids keeps you and those around you safe.

Animal Grossology Scientists examine animal waste, or scat, and other bodily fluids to understand how animals eat, live, and if they are healthy. Healthy animals indicate a healthy environment, which is good for humans!

Human Grossology Humans have eleven body systems, but the ones that do the most gross stuff are our respiratory system (snot), our digestive system (where burps, barf, and farts start) and our excretory system (poo).

Unit Key Concepts*Shaded areas are SEL-based concepts. Non-shaded areas are theme key concepts.

TABLE TALK CONVO CARDS

If you want to poop more, eating fiber-rich foods like sweet potatoes,

raspberries, black beans, and edamame can help. Have you tried

any of these foods?

Researchers have found that many people spend less than 10 seconds

washing their hands and many people do not use soap. Why is this no bueno?

We swallow most of our mucus unconsciously. Drinking more water

can help us to thin out our mucus. Do you like water? Why or why not?

Some foods produce more gas than others: wheat products, dairy products,

cabbage, apples, radishes, broccoli, onions, cauliflower, and (of course)

beans. These are high-fiber, sugary foods that the body has trouble digesting. Do

you like any of these foods?Which ones?

Your poop is about 75% water. If you don’t drink enough water, it can

become harder to pass. How much water have you had today?

Eating our own boogers is not actually harmful, but it is not

suggested to include them in our daily diet as they can be really gross. Demonstrate how to properly sneeze

into the crook of your arm.

Some animals - including seahorses, lungfishes and platypuses - have no stomachs. Their food goes from the

esophagus straight to the intestines. Why is it better for it to take more time

to digest food for humans?

Sweating is the body’s air conditioning system. When sweat is released, it coats the skin to remove heat from the body.

When sweat evaporates, you cool down. Salts and urea are left behind. That’s

why sweat tastes salty and feels sticky. When do people sweat the most? Is it dangerous when we stop sweating?

Clayton Youth Enrichment: 1215 Country Club Lane, Fort Worth 76112 ph. 817.923.9888Our mission is to serve communities of North Texas by providing quality programs that foster the

TABLE TALK CONVO CARDS

Puking is important for your body. It gets rid of the stuff that your body thinks could be

dangerous to you. In fact, throwing up is so important that there is part of the brain called the vomit center that causes this uncontrollable act. Do you think you can stop yourself from puking?

Why is that not a good idea? Should you make fun of someone that gets sick in your class or during

the school day?

During the Middle Ages, bathing was not instyle. Not having to bathe was a sign of

wealth. They certainly did sweat and stink, however - and covered it up with perfumes,

oils, and spices. How many times a week do you take a bath or shower? What is your favorite kind of soap or body wash? Do you like soaps or perfumes that smell like fresh

laundry or like flowers? Why?

Some frogs belch their babies into the world! What is a belch? What are some other words for belch?

Chronic nausea and vomiting are symptoms of acid reflux disease (heartburn). Some people have

chest pain or asthma caused by acid reflux. What are some medicines you can take (with

parent permission) for acid reflux?

Until age 12 or so, sweat glandsaren’t active. That’s why adults are

so stinky and kids aren’t usually. What can people do to help with the

smell of stinky sweat?

It’s a myth that dog saliva is cleaner than human saliva. There are hundreds of different types of bacteria in a dog’s mouth. How many times a day should

a human brush their teeth? Can you brush a dog’s teeth? What kind of

toothpaste do you use?

Boogers are actually “nose garbage,”The air is filled with dust, smoke, grit, bacteria, tiny fungi, pollen, soot, little

metal pieces, ash, fuzz, sand, and evenitty bitty meteorites. The mucus is usedto clean that stuff out of the air. Why isit important to trap these things in the

mucus in your nose or eyes?

“Tonsil stones” are mucus mixed with natural mouth bacteria that forms a dime-sized collection that looks like cauliflower.

It gets stuck in the roof of your mouth with your tonsils, and you can cough it

out. It looks really gross, but it’s a natural phenomenon. It just freaks a lot of people

out.” Why would it freak you out?

Objective: To think about what your likes and dislikes are in an imaginative way.

Supplies:• White or construction paper• Crayons• Markers• Watercolors or finger paints• Table covers• Water• Paintbrushes• Cups• Oil and chalk pastels• Music, and something to play it on• Optional: Seeds, cups, and soil to grow and care for flowers

Adult Prep: Purchase flower seeds to plant into cups and all of the tools necessary to care for the plant. If students will take them home, type up a care label to place on the cup.

Time: 30-45 minutes

Group Size: Individual

SEL Connection: Self-Awareness, Self Expression

Introduce the Activity: Ask: What is your favorite kind of flower? If you were a flower, what kind would you be?

Activity: Instruct children to draw a picture of the kind of flower you’d like to be. Color it with the provided art materials and include words or pictures around your flower that answer these questions. What type of flower are you (can be imaginary name)? What color(s) are you? Where are you planted? Would you want to be picked or left alone? If someone were to pick you, who would you want to pick you? Whom would you like to be given to as a present? Where would you like to be placed if you were in a vase?

Extension: Plant a seed into a cup with soil and care for it either at home or at Clayton.

Reflection:Content/Thinking: What inspired your drawings? Explain each part of your drawing and how it answers the questions we asked.Social: Why is sharing about yourself with others important?Personal: How does it feel to share about yourself? How does it feel to hear about others?

Appreciation: It helped me when... I really liked...

Closing: Hand Dance - Put on music. Students will sit in a circle and when a dance is called out, make the dance movement with just your hands. Dances to call:

• The Disco• The Hitchhiker• The Sprinkler• Go Fishing• Raise the Roof• Drive the Car• The Monkey• The Chicken• Fist Pump• Freestyle

Details Directions

Objective: To explore having empathy for yourself when you make mistakes.

Supplies:• “The Bad Seed” by Pete Oswald• True or False cards• Timer• Music, and something to play it with

Adult Prep: Secure the book and read it before you meet with your group. Find a calm, quiet, comfortable place to read. Laminate True or False cards for each group.

Time: 30-45 minutes

Group Size: Small/Individual

SEL Connection: Self-Awareness, Respect, Listening, Following Directions, Self-Management

Introduce the Activity: Show the cover of the book and tell the children the title. What do you think the book will be about?

Activity: Read the book aloud.

Extension: True or False Game - Place children into trial tribes. Pass out True or False Cards to each group. The leader will read questions and set the timer. It’s important for everyone to listen to the question and ask if it needs to be read again. Groups will discuss what the answer may be. When time runs out, stop talking and put up either the True or False card based on what your group decided on.

Questions:• Some people are just born bad. (F)• The sunflower seed acted bad because he was sad and hurting, and being bad protected him from feeling. (T)• When bad things happen, they will never get better. (F)• If you feel angry, sad, scared, or lonely you are a bad person. (F)• You are precious and lovable. (T)

Reflection:Content/Thinking: Imagine if you were a seed or nut character in the book and you learned the seed was bad because he lost his family. He felt bad about himself, so he wanted others to feel bad. What could you do to be a good friend?Social: How did your group do in deciding on answers? What happened if you chose the wrong answer? Did you forgive yourselves or teammates for not picking right? Why are you like the seed if you did?Personal: At the end of the book, the sunflower seed overhears the pistachio say, “Actually, he’s not all that bad anymore.” What is something you wish people said about you?

Appreciation: I am lovable because... I am worth it because... I belong because...

Closing: Opposite World Freeze Dance - Play music and, instead of freezing when the music stops, freeze when the music is on and dance when it’s not.

Details Directions

Objective: To create a poop project, and explore patterns, as well as the importance of what we eat.

Supplies:• White school glue (2 oz. per color)• Vibrant food coloring• 1/4 cup of water• Laundry starch• Six cups• Plastic forks• Measuring cups• Glitter, craft jewels, sparkling accessories

Adult Prep: N/A

Time: 30-45 minutes

Group Size: Small/Individual

Key Concept: Animal Grossology, Healthy Behaviors

SEL Connection: Self-Awareness

Introduce the Activity: Explain: Your body takes in air, food, and liquid to grow and get energy, but you can’t use every bit. Air, food, and liquid contain leftover material your body can’t use, otherwise known as waste. Your poop looks like what you eat most of the time. What would unicorn poop look like?

Activity: Divide into groups of three to five and pass out the supplies. Tell students that each cup will make a different color of slime. In each cup, add 1/4 cup of water, squeeze a few drops of food coloring, add two ounces of glue, and then 1/4 cup of laundry starch. Add glitter, sparkles, or other bling, and stir. Let it sit for five minutes. Take out each slime and work it together with hands to remove any remaining stickiness. Stretch it out one at a time and arrange the slime in a rainbow pattern on a flat surface. Twist them to make a long colorful strip, then swirl the strip into a poop-like pattern.

Extension: Say: We are what we eat, or at least your poop is. We have no idea of what unicorns might eat (maybe rainbows), but, if we were a unicorn scientist, we would analyze their poop to find out! A stool analysis is a series of tests done on a stool (feces) sample to help diagnose conditions affecting the digestive tract, including infection (from parasites, viruses, or bacteria), poor nutrient absorption, or cancer. What you eat matters because it determines how you feel, how much energy you have, and even what you smell like. When you eat healthy, your digestive system uses what you eat to replenish your body and feel good. If your digestive system is irritated, you may have diarrhea (runny poop). Too much diarrhea can mean you’re sick. In your group, make a list of the healthy and unhealthy things you ate today. What would a scientist find in your poop?

Assessment:Naturalistic: Create a list of foods a unicorn may eat to make sparkly poop (real/make-believe).Mathematical/Logical: Count how many colors are in your unicorn poop.Verbal/Linguistic: Work with a leader to create a recipe for unicorn birthday cake.Bodily/Kinesthetic: Create a dance where you twirl around and use ribbon batons like the swirly unicorn poop.Visual/Spatial: Draw a unicorn picture.Interpersonal: Discuss your favorite foods with a groupmate.Intrapersonal: Create a healthy menu grocery list.

Reflection:Content/Thinking: Why is eating healthy important?Social: Did your group honor the agreements while creating your poop?Personal: How did you feel when it was your turn to help with the project?

Appreciation: I liked it when... I admired how...

Details Directions

Objective: To explore gross jobs.

Supplies:• Flip chart/markers• Gross Jobs handout• Tape

Adult Prep: Read and learn about the gross jobs so you can discuss with your students. Create as many flip charts and sets of directions as you plan to have groups for.

Time: 30-45 minutes

Group Size: Small/Individual

Key Concept: Human Grossology

SEL Connection: Self-Awareness, Being Respectful

Introduce the Activity: Say: There are a lot of jobs out there, but some are really gross jobs. However, the simple truth is, most of these gross jobs are necessary for us to live comfortably!

Activity: Leaders will print, cut out, and paste the pictures of the gross jobs onto the flip chart to the left and leave room to the right for groups to paste the descriptions on later. Cut out a set of descriptions for each group (you may wish to laminate). Pass out a set of the prepared flip charts and descriptions to each group. Instruct them to read the descriptions and tape them next to the pictures they think they represent. After a set amount of time, review the answers.

Extension: Say: In many cases, we may not notice the people doing gross jobs; we just think our streets stay clean and garbage disappears. Being aware of the people that make our lives easier and less gross is important to understanding our society. We need to respect and not judge people who do gross jobs. They are important parts of our society and handle things we often don’t want to think about. They deserve our respect and a thank you! Invite someone to your site to present to the students on their gross job. Research other gross jobs (exterminators, lab technicians, phlebotomists etc.).

Assessment:Naturalistic: Discuss and explore gross jobs in nature or that help the environment. Research animals that do gross jobs for our environment.Musical: Create a commercial and write a jingle to sell your gross services to the public.Mathematical/Logical: Take a vote on who would do the gross jobs explored. Add up the most and least popular gross jobs, and place the results in a pie or bar graph.Verbal/Linguistic: Create a comic strip superhero that does a gross job for the good of all.Bodily/Kinesthetic: Perform a role play of the comic strip story created.Visual/Spatial: Illustrate the comic strip.Interpersonal: Discuss jobs with your group and why you think that job would use your strengths and talents.Intrapersonal: Research a job you may want to do in the future.

Reflection:Content/Thinking: Why would people do gross jobs? What would happen if nobody did those gross jobs?Social: How would our lives look if these jobs weren’t done? Can you name other gross jobs?Personal: Would you do any of these jobs? What kind of job do you think you’d be good at? What do you plan to do as a future career?

Appreciation: It was interesting to... Our group did a good job...

GROSS JOBS

Maggot FarmersFarmers raise maggots to sell as fishing bait or for agricultural purposes.

Chimney SweepBefore everyone had heating in their homes, fireplaces were the only way to get heat. Due to the small spaces, young boys used to climb up into the spaces to clean them. Nowadays, it is not as dangerous and we have equipment to help us! Ash and soot stick to chimney sweeps as they clean.

DishwasherMost kids don’t like to do the dishes or load the dishwasher. Imagine if youwere a restaurant dishwasher who had to clean up after hundreds of strangers every day!

Whale Snot CollectorResearchers study whale boogers to examine disease patterns in these oversized mammals. Scientists actually invented a remote-controlled helicopter to harvest their snot.

EMTEmergency Medical Technicians are often fire fighters or ambulance drivers, and are the first ones on the scene of accidents, seeing people attheir worst. Blood, vomit, poop, pee, and guts are a daily possibility. When not fighting fires, many firefighters are doing much more than rescuing cats from trees.

Lift Pump RemoverWhen you flush a toilet, the waste is sent to a treatment plant, where it enters a five-story high lift pump chamber. Sometimes, the pump breaks so a person wearing SCUBA gear has to swim through the mess and tie a rope to the pump so that it can be pulled out and replaced.

Vomit CollectorSome amusement parks have these specialized janitors on hand to handle vomit messes from roller coaster and rides. Bodily fluids can carry disease, so they have an important job to keep guests healthy by cleaning these accidents up correctly!

Bacteria ChaserBacteria doesn’t generally live in the most sanitary of conditions, which means these scientists often find themselves in damp, hot, and extremely smelly locations. They discover harmful and useful bacteria to protect and help humans, and plant and animal life.

ACTIVITY:BURPING BAGS

Component: S.T.E.M.Age: Pre-K

Details Directions

Objective: To simulate the process of gasses filling up our bodies and being released in belches.

Supplies:• 1/3 cup vinegar• 1/4 cup warm water• Quart sandwich bags• Two Tbsp. baking soda• Paper towels, tape• Food coloring• Glitter, cake sprinkles• Two empty water bottles per group• Yeast• Sugar packets• Balloons• “Alpha Belch: A Noisy A-Z Book about Animals Who Burp!” by Stephen White

Adult Prep: Portion out materials. Identify your outdoor area. Read the book before and find a comfortable, calm, and quiet place to read.

Time: 30-45 minutes

Group Size: Small/Individual

Key Concept: Human Grossology, Manners

SEL Connection: Self-Management

Introduce the Activity: Explain: Ruminating animals eat their food, store it in their stomach(s) and burp it back up to chew again. Some well-known ruminating animals include cattle, goats, sheep, giraffes, bison, yaks, water buffalo, deer, camels, llamas, wildebeests, and antelope.

Activity: This activity is best to do outside in the grass. Instruct children to place two tablespoons of baking soda into a paper towel. Fold the paper towel into the shape of a pouch and tape together. Mix the vinegar and warm water together in a bag. Place food coloring and sprinkles inside, drop the paper towel pouch into the bag, seal it tight, and set it on the ground. The bag should start to swell and explode.

Extension: Stomach Gas - Divide into groups of three to five. Pass out two water bottles per group. Instruct students to fill one with warm water and the other with warm water and a sugar packet. Take a packet of instant yeast and split between the water bottles. Put a balloon on top of the water bottles. The bottle with yeast and sugar will eventually have an inflated balloon because the yeast is eating the sugar and producing carbon dioxide as a by-product, thus blowing up the balloon. Describe this as the yeast belching and farting as it eats the sugar.

Assessment:Naturalistic: Brainstorm or research a list of animals that belch methane gas, which hurts the environment (cows, goats, sheep, buffalo, camels).Musical: Have your whole group blow up balloons. Hold the end to keep the air in. Let go and see what music we create. On three, use different amounts of pressure by just barely pinching or pinching the end tightly to see what sounds we can make.Mathematical/Logical: Count how long it takes for your balloons to blow up/your bags to burst.Verbal/Linguistic: Say the following sentence as fast as you can three times: “Buffaloes belch better than blue birds.” Try not to get tongue tied. Create your own tongue twister.Bodily/Kinesthetic: Your bellies feel gassy. Let’s try to rub our bellies and pat our heads, and switch on the leader’s cue.Visual/Spatial: Draw a belching animal.Interpersonal: In some countries, burping after a meal is good. Why would this be true?Intrapersonal: Make a list of foods that might make you gassy.

Reflection:Content/Thinking: What was happening in your experiments? How is that like your stomach?Social: How well did your group work together?Personal: How does it feel to talk about gross, but natural things?

Appreciation: I liked today because... My favorite thing that was said today was...

ACTIVITY:HEALTHY HANDWASHING

Component: S.T.E.M.Age: Pre-K/Primary

Details Directions

Objective: To simulate bacteria on our hands as we test two handwashing methods.

Supplies:• Cocoa powder• Oil• Paper towel• Soap• Water• Digital timer• Construction paper• Paper• Pencils• Pens

Adult Prep: Spread tablecloths on tables.

Time: 30-45 minutes

Group Size: Individual

Key Concept: Human Grossology, Healthy Behaviors

SEL Connection: Self-Management

Introduce the Activity: Explain: It is normal for us to have some bacteria on our hands. In fact, good bacteria are part of the immune system, helping us fight skin infections. Having the wrong harmful bacteria on our skin or too much bacteria can make us sick, however, so we must wash our hands regularly and in the correct way.

Activity: Pour oil on each student’s hands and then sprinkle cocoa powder. Wash hands to get all of the cocoa off. When you’re done, press your hand on a paper towel and see if any cocoa comes off. If yes, wash some more.

Extension: Michigan State University researchers studied handwashing and found the presence of signs about handwashing appears to have a positive effect on the way people wash their hands. Inspect your local bathrooms and find the signs that tell you to wash your hands or how to wash your hands.

Assessment:Naturalistic: Experiment with handwashing to see which method is better. Method 1: Just use water. Method 2: Use water and soap. Use the Scientific Method to make a guess and test it.Musical: Sing “Happy Birthday” or a similar song while washing your hands.Mathematical/Logical: Time how long it takes to get all the cocoa off your hands.Verbal/Linguistic: As a group, write the directions to wash your hands in the best way possible.Bodily/Kinesthetic: Try the activity again, and, this time, wash your hands in a pattern. Make sure you get between your fingers, on the back of your hands, and your nail beds. Does this take longer?Visual/Spatial: Trace your hands on construction paper. Color the parts of your hands you think will have the most germs. Hint: It’s most likely the parts that touch the most things!Interpersonal: Discuss with a partner a time when you got really dirty or messy. What did it feel like? How did you clean up?Intrapersonal: Make a list of times you should wash your hands.

Reflection:Content/Thinking: Based on your observations, should a healthy handwashing procedure include soap? How many seconds should it take?Social: Certain jobs require you to wash your hands more than others. What jobs may require a lot of handwashing? Some examples are restaurants, doctors, nurses, nail technicians, hair dressers, dentists, exterminators, chemists, jobs that work with chemicals or blood, etc.Personal: How does it feel when you have dirty hands? How can it help you to be healthy to wash your hands correctly?

Appreciation: Today, I was glad that I learned... Thank you to...

HANDWASHING

What is the best way to wash your hands? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advise:

• Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.

• Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.

• Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.

• Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.

Supplies:• Five cups crunchy cereal• Three cups rice crisp cereal• Two cups skinny pretzels• One bag white chocolate chips, or powdered sugar and soy butter• 2 1/2 cups mini marshmallows• Microwave• Bowls• Tray• Tie-dye kit• Birdseed• Two cups flour• One cup salt• Water• Paper• Pencil• Rubber bands• Craft sticks• Masking tape• “The Pigeon Has Feelings Too” by Mo Willems

Adult Prep: Secure use of microwave. Check all allergies. Portion supplies.

Time: 30-45 minutes

Group Size: Small/Individual

Introduce the Activity: Say: Birds, unlike mammals, don’t produce urine. Instead, they excrete nitrogenous wastes in the form of uric acid, which emerges as a white paste.

Activity: Tell children to mix all the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Melt the white chocolate in the microwave for about one minute. Pour the melted chocolate over the dry ingredients and spread on wax paper to cool. If you do not have a microwave, you can roll the cereal in soy butter and powdered sugar.

Assessment:Naturalistic: Did you know that an average adult can poop two pounds a day. Elephants can poop 80 pounds a day. A guinea pig’s poop can smell sweet like candy. Research animal poop facts.Musical: Create a poop cheer that starts with “Give me a P...”Mathematical/Logical: Poop is made up of 75% water and the other 25% is part fiber, dead bacteria, and live bacteria. Create a mixture of bread to water in a bowl that matches the percentages of poop.Verbal/Linguistic: Read “The Pigeon Has Feelings Too.”Bodily/Kinesthetic: Make a slingshot out of pencils, craft sticks, masking tape, and rubber bands. See how far you can shoot a “pigeon” or balled-up piece of newspaper wrapped with tape.Visual/Spatial: Make bird seed playdoh by mixing flour, salt, and birdseed with sufficient water to make a playdoh texture.Interpersonal: Work with a partner to create a pigeon potty design. Keep in mind that pigeons have tails and no hands!Intrapersonal: Healthy poop is shaped like a log or the letter S. Create a poem where every line starts with the letter S.

Reflection:Content/Thinking: What did you learn about pigeon poop through this activity?Social: What values and agreements did your group practice while working in groups? What challenges did you encounter? What successes did you experience?Personal: How did the pigeon poop taste? Did you try it right away or did you have to think about it? Why?

Appreciation: It was a lot of fun when... I was happy to hear that...
