REDONDO BEACH DOES ABOUT FACE ON FACEBOOK

By Kristin S. Agostoni Staff Writer Posted: 08/22/2010 10:17:31 PM PDTUpdated: 08/22/2010 10:21:00 PM PDT

“If you're following Redondo Beach on Facebook, this probably isn't

news you'll like. The city is giving up its page, or at least putting it on

hiatus. Until local leaders are satisfied that the use of the popular

social networking website won't leave the city open to legal challenges

or violations of open meetings and public records laws, they've ended

a pilot project that put Redondo Beach on Facebook about a year

ago.”

CITY BAN ON FACEBOOK

About Face: Leading City

Firms Such As Dresdner

Kleinwort Have Blocked

Networking Sites.

“More than two thirds of London companies - led by top city firms - are now

banning or restricting the use of internet site Facebook over fears that staff are

wasting time on it. Many firms have now warned employees that "facebooking"

during office hours is a sackable offence.”

FLORIDA PUBLIC RECORDS LAW IN A NUTSHELL

• Access to public records guaranteed by Florida Constitution and Statute.

“Every person has the right to inspect or copy any public record made or received

in connection with the official business of any public body, officer, or employee of

the state.”

Fla. Const., Art. 1, §24

inspected and examined by any person desiring to do so, at any reasonable time,

under reasonable conditions, and under supervision by the custodian of public

record or the custodian’s designee.”

THE TRAIN HAS LEFT THE STATIONOR…

• Government needs to get on board with social media – and take the steps necessary to protect itself.

• 2009 PEW Internet & American Life Project – 1 in 5 internet users searched for political information, posted political views or engaged in civic activity on a social network.

Page 25: Kevin S. Hennessy Managing Shareholder Lewis Longman & Walker, P. A

…THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL IS A TRAIN?• Newspaper readership declining, local news
