Since beginning my graduate work in architecture this past year I have developed an increased interest in the relationship between the architecture of communities and the passage of time. I have become fascinated with architecture’s role in the shifting paradigms of society. I am passionate about discovering ways to celebrate the past and welcome the future through transforming architecture on both the scale of the building and the community.

Environmental Design Studio, Fall 2012Project Duration: 2 Weeks

A bipartite division of space: a garden and a room, serves as a peaceful escape from the fast-paced market district of Charleston, SC. At the point of threshold between the garden and the room, the vegetation that lines the main axis shifts from a heavy, tall, grounded vegetation that anchors the low form to the ground to a light, barely grounded vegetation. The head-level walls of the garden that are anchored into the earth exist as untreated steel that will rust showing its age over time to reflect the city’s rich historical context. The tall ephemeral light walls of the sunken room define a vertically axial space that is more transient and reflective to echo the city’s history, ‘The Holy City’.

MUSEUM OF THE CITY

Environmental Design Studio, Fall 2012Project Duration: 5 Weeks

As a capstone to the Environmental Design Studio I was tasked with creat-ing a formal composition as a representation of the City of Charleston SC. The assigned program consisted of a rectangular volume, a cube, and four separate walls types to respond to light, meter, threshold, and mass. Extensive research of Charleston’s landform, urban fabric, culture, and growth over time served as the basis of my design decisions. Designed to hold the corner of Market and Meeting Street, the museum plays a very important yet silent urban role. Existing to quietly showcase one of the city’s most historic sites, the Daughter’s of Confederacy Building, the museum exists to define the central spine of market street by responding to the existing scale, rhythm, and thresholds. The museum’s parti was to organize the program along a central spine that defined the separation between the inside and outside spaces.

Consisting of recycled materials, Bike Box is a transportable shop. An eight foot cube that redefines conservation of space while functioning as a 150sf shop when expanded. A tripartite division of space: A space for purchasing, a space for Repair, and a space for recycling.
