Offertory Anthem: K. Lee Scott ......................... Summer ChoirSearch me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any evil inme, and lead me into the way everlasting. Where shall I go from your Spirit? And where shall I go fromyour presence? Anthem: Samuel Liddle ......... Gail Hall, sopranoHow lovely are Thy dwellings, O Lord of hosts! My soul longeth, yea, fainteth, for the courts of the Lord:My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Yea, the sparrow hath found her a house, and the swallowa nest, where she may lay her young, even Thine altars, O Lord of Hosts, my King and my God. O Lord Godof Hosts, hear my prayer. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tentsof wickedness. For a day in Thy courts is better than a thousand.

Worship Notes:Participants: Jerry Taylor our minister of worship and music and organist-choir director, presentstoday’s sermon from the series, “Jesus the Difference Maker” — . Randy Daniel, chairman of our board, an elder and financial planner, hosts today’s worship. Christi Wilson who isactive in our music program, reads today’s Scripture Lesson. Peter Bath who came as a youth pastorfor our congregation in 1980 and hired Jerry Taylor in 1986 when he was elected senior pastor, presentstoday’s Prayers of the People.

As we gather for worship the Handbell Ensemble, which is under the direction of Joan Ulloth Dorgan, rings Linda Lamb’s setting of Martha Jean Hoehn (who was Jerry Taylor’s bosswhen he arrived at Kettering 28 years ago yesterday) and Jerry Taylor play the two-piano arrangementof Gordon Young’s most popular piece

(hymn 645) is a 19th-century American Christian hymn, written by Daniel Roberts,a graduate of Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the United StatesDeclaration of Independence in 1876. The tune, was composed for these words by GeorgeWarren, who was organist at St. Thomas Church in New York City.

was composed in 1918 by American composer Roy Ringwald (1910 - 1995) andovernight it became the theme song for American vocal artist, Kate Smith. Ringwald was extremely bashfuland was almost a recluse. Born in Helena, Montana, he grew up in Santa Monica, California and residedin the Palos Verdes Hills at the time of his death. Choir leaders everywhere rated Roy Ringwald as one ofthe most accomplished arrangers of that time. In 1935 Ringwald joined Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians asa singer and arranger. Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians were considered for many years to beAmerica’s finest all professional choir. Jerry Taylor sang with them briefly during his years at IndianaUniversity.

is a setting of Psalm 139 and was composed in 1994 by K. Lee Scott who is anAmerican composer living in Birmingham, Alabama. This anthem, discovered only 10 years ago, hasbecome a favorite choral piece of Jerry Taylor and our choir.

is based upon Psalm 84 and heard in a setting by Samuel Liddle(1868-1935), an English organist/pianist who accompanied many of the great musicians of his time andoften wrote music for them. This anthem was probably composed for John McCormick. Gail Hall,mezzo-soprano soloist, was the choral/voice teacher at Spring Valley Academy for many years beforemoving to Escondito, California to be near her children and grandchildren. This piece was sung in the veryfirst service that Jerry Taylor coordinated as the new minister of music in 1986.

is a hymn written by Arvella Schueller, director of worship at the Crystal Cathedralin 1986 and sung to the tune which we know best with the text, “O For A Thousand Tongues.”

from “Symphony No 1” by Louis Vierne is played in honor of Dr. Melvin West who was Jerry Taylor’smajor professor, and who played this piece when he left Kettering Church as the Minister of Music to goto Union College. Jerry Taylor has played this piece at all the major events and changes in his career.

Our Church History in 1990

Although senior pastor Peter Bath had announced he was leaving in the previous December,he actually didn’t move to the college until mid February. Meanwhile, the pastoral searchcommittee worked diligently with the conference to find a replacement. In April it wasannounced that Wilmore Eva would be coming in the summer. In the interim, Dan Stevensadded to his work of education and young adults, the role of acting senior pastor. Greg Taylorwas pastor for youth, Jerry Taylor was the minister of music and Val Shober was the officemanager. In July Don Miller accepted Spring Valley Academy’s invitation to be the guidancecounselor and Bible instructor, and the next month we said goodbye to Kendra Haloviak, ourintern for the year. She had done such a good job that the Church Board voted to replace herwith a woman pastor. Though some were called, we were unable to get any women to come.

It is safe to say that missions was a high component of church in 1990. Joyce Agardchampioned a drive to send 1000 Bibles to Russia. Wendy Goodman was a student missionaryto Poland and Shawna Hartloff went to South Korea. The Kettering Young Adults sponsoredanother trip to Mexico led by Pastor Stevens. This time San Luis Potosi was chosen, and achurch was built in that city. Students from Kettering College (then KCMA) went and KatieAdkins later joined the church because of the trip. An interesting aside: the group hadoriginally intended to bunk each night in a chili factory, but at the last minute were divided outamong local homes. Although this made it harder to get together for meals and worship, itturned out that we escaped sore throats, burning noses and watering eyes. The farewell partywas held in this factory and after just 45 minutes, we “gringos” were wiping the tears from oureyes. What would it have been like if we had slept there, we wondered? The 4th Annual TalentShow was put on to fund this mission trip.

A church-sponsored trip to Bavaria to see the Passion Play in Oberammergau in July was led byPastors Greg Taylor and Stevens. It was a 17-day trip through Southern Germany, Austria,Yugoslavia, Venice, Geneva, Paris and London and 45 people participated.

Back at home, the church is bustling with activity: In January we observed Christian UnityWeekend by having a pulpit and choir exchange with Fairmont Presbyterian. Once a month theadults and children met together in the sanctuary for Sabbath School in a program called “All inthe Family” where the children’s divisions could report activities and all could sing children’ssongs together. A second Mission Pageant was held in March with pulpit guest JuanitaKretschmar speaking on our mission at home.

Our Church History in 1990 (continued)

The church was growing also. The Baby Boomers children caused a bubble in primary age kids thatcaused us to form 3 primary divisions, one for each 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades. The Applegates,Adams and others gave great leadership to these divisions. Spring Valley Academy also an-nounced a fund raising campaign to expand additional classrooms and cafeteria to their facilities.

The July General Conference Session in Indianapolis was much on the minds of our churchleadership who were not hesitant to bring bold proposals to the conference constituency in May(some to be passed on as agenda items to the General Conference):

(1) that Ohio Advance no longer came from church budget but rather from member donations and that the conference would restructure the fund to be broader in scope than just support of Mount Vernon Academy;(2) that Ohio speak on behalf of women in ministry in light of theGeneral Conference session;(3) that long-range plans be created to make Camp Mohaven a retreatcenter for the state; and(4) that the Union work to downsize thus freeing up funds for church projects.

The Eva’s joined us in a bus charter for the last weekend of the Indianapolis event.

Music at Kettering was as full as ever, with a concert on 2 pianos, organ concerts by local andinternational artists, a string ensemble led by concert master Peter Ciaschini, and a ThanksgivingConcert with choir, orchestra, organist Robert Moncrief and a violin/piano duet by Ken and SallyChristman. December closed the year with the usual Friday evening concerts by the school andthe Candlelight Concert by the music department. A Chrismon tree was erected in the FellowshipHall to celebrate the symbols of Jesus.

Of all the members that joined us in 1990 there is only one that still worships here at Kettering, ourchurch treasurer, Edward Mann. Children born in that year that are now making inroads intoleadership are Danny Udrea, Kirk Shoemaker, Bradley Woodin, and Rebecca Sweet.

History notes written by Dan Stevens.
