ROCK

Mexico, how do you feel being together for so long? What do you do to get along so well despite the stress of touring?DE: It’s hard to spend time with so many people, everyone has their own personality, but the years have taught us to get to know each other and tolerate each other. Sometimes joking amongst ourselves helps to relieve any tension, especially during our long trips. The trick is tolerance and to look at everything with a sense of humor knowing that despite any differences we care a lot about each other.

KH: Which is your favorite song or songs to play live?DE: I love playing Caminemos Juntos, that song inspires and relaxes me.

KH: Panteón Rococó has always been a band that speaks against repression and racism, why is it so important for you to send this message?DE: While on tour, we’ve seen some cities where racism is still very strong and taken very seriously by anti-racism groups. Our band itself has been a victim of aggression from a neo-Nazi group, and there are many immigrants that suffer from discrimination in Europe and in the

It’s hard to find a band that’s been together for 17 years, let alone one that has been as productive as Panteón Rococó in that time, having released 9 full-length albums and participated in numerous compilations. Putting the ska in Mexican Ska, Panteón has flourished and sold thousands of records both at home, and in Europe, especially in Germany. They

are so popular there that they had to enlist the help of European label Übersee Records, to keep their fans satisfied and their albums stocked. Their popularity comes from blending several styles of popular music such as rock, punk, salsa, cumbia, mariachi, reggae, ska, and mestizo, which make for a very energetic groovy sound. Add to the mix their lyrics full of political statements or messages of doomed love and you have a recipe for success. We recently had a chance to interview Dario Espinosa, Bass player of Panteón Rococó, to tell us more about their upcoming album, how they get along while on the road, and why they speak against discrimination and racism.

KH: We’re anxious for the release of your upcoming album, “Ni Carne Ni Pescado.” What does the name signify and what can we expect from this ninth Panteón Rococó album?DE: When we told our German manager that our new album would have unedited songs, covers, and a mini tribute to Panteón Rococó, he repeated a well-known German phrase, “ni carne ni pescado (neither beef nor fish) which is the equivalent of “ni Chana ni Juana” in Mexico. He said this because the album is not defined to its content; it’s a little bit of everything. When it was time to choose our album title this one was highly voted by the band.

KH: The video for your last single, “Quiero Bailar Contigo”, shows several band members dancing in the streets with strangers, were these rehearsed actors? Where did you record and who was the best dancer?DE: In reality, we only shot in Mexico City, and we found everyone dancing in the video spontaneously. They were mostly tourists, and people that work in the downtown area, that’s why the video turned out so natural and fun. In my opinion, the best dancer was Felipe with the Japanese tourists; he gave the dance his own style.

KH: Recently, you celebrated your 17-year anniversary at the Palacio de los Deportes in

United States. When we look at Mexico and we see our own people discriminating against our indigenous population, or the poor, or people of color it’s sad and something real that we must work to change.

KH: What can the fans in Washington DC expect for the show on July 23 at the Howard Theatre?DE: It will be an intense show with lots of dancing, and rocking to both our classic and new songs from the next album. We’re going to really take advantage of this unique visit so that people feel like they are in a live Panteón show in Mexico; hopefully none of the Washington fans will miss it!!!

You heard it here Panteón Rococó fans! This will be a unique opportunity to see one of the most beloved and popular Mexican ska/rock bands performing their hits and new songs in your own backyard! To find out more information about the show and to get tickets go to: www.tickeri.com/events/panteon-rococo. See you there, and make sure to bring your dancing shoes!

POP

By Ellen Flores

Last year, “On The Floor” became the Most Watched Music Video by a female artist in the History of YouTube, with a staggering 500 million views. It almost seems as though anything she touches turns to gold and this summer won’t be the exception. Embarking on her biggest tour to date, Jennifer Lopez will be teaming up with Spanish singer heartthrob Enrique Iglesias and the dynamic duo from Puerto Rico, Wisin & Yandel for a tour that is being dubbed as one of the hottest music tickets this summer.

Enrique Iglesias’ start was definitely like an Experiencia Religiosa. The son of the legendary Julio Iglesias, Enrique began his career singing in his native Spanish language. After worldwide success, he then made the jump riding the Latino music crossover wave of the early 2000s and making a name for himself in the English language market. His crossover solidified him as a superstar and to date, Enrique is one of the top grossing Spanish entertainers currently on tour. Undeniably, the biggest Latin recording artist in music history, Enrique has 22 #1 singles on the Billboard Latin Songs Chart, as well as, multiple #1’s across the Billboard charts with a combined 68 No. 1 charted positions. Hits like Rhythm Divine, Be With You, Do You Know? (The Ping Pong song), to the video sensation Hero featuring guest stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Mickey Rourke. Enrique has given the world a heavy and intoxicating dose of his haunting crooning voice combined with the undeniable sex appeal that comes with the Iglesias last name. His latest record, Euphoria, is a tribute to his Spanish language roots and club sound that has garnered him multiple collaborations with artists like Juan Luis Guerra, Pitbull, and Wisin & Yandel. You might know a little song called I like it, right? Euphoria has been one of his most successful albums to date with over 5 million albums sold.

IT’S SATURDAY NIGHT AND ALL YOU’LL WANT TO DO IS DANCE AGAIN WITH YOUR PAPI, GET DOWN WITH SOME SEXY MOVIMIENTO THAT WILL HAVE YOU SAYING I LIKE HOW IT FEELS! LUCKILY, WASHINGTONIANS WILL HAVE THE CHANCE TO LIVE IT UP ON SATURDAY, JULY 28 AT THE VERIZON CENTER WITH JENNIFER LOPEZ, ENRIQUE IGLESIAS AND WISIN & YANDEL. TRUST ME, THIS WILL BE A SUMMER SHOW THAT YOU WON’T WANT TO MISS.

You may know her as a judge on American Idol, a fashion and fragrance designer or simply remember her as the actress that played the beloved Selena back in the ‘90s. Nonetheless, Jennifer Lopez ( J.Lo) has had a multifaceted successful career spanning over the last decade. Her start as a Fly Girl on the show In Living Color got her career jump started as a dancer and her face known on the small screen. It wasn’t until 1999 when we got our first chance to hear Lopez as a singer with the album “On The 6”. A tribute to her roots as a dancer and girl from the Bronx taking the 6 train to the city, “On The 6” was catapulted to the top by the influence and power of the MTV TRL generation. The success of the debut single and video for “If You Had My Love” made her become one of the first Latina artists to score top 5 status on the show. J.Lo had officially become a household name in America.

Trendsetter and empire mogul, J.Lo has set records by being the first woman (and Latina) to have a #1 Billboard Top 200 Chart album ( JLO 2001) and #1 movie (The Wedding Planner) at the same time. She set the standard for celebrity branding in fragrance, apparel and accessories.

When it comes to collaborations, El Duo de la Historia Wisin & Yandel know a thing or two about that. From their humble beginnings in the mountainous city of Cayey, Puerto Rico, Wisin & Yandel have had a huge role in evolving and transforming the reggaeton genre into the sound and force that it is today. Los Líderes have been the go-to guys for reggaeton crossover collaborations. Artists of the caliber of David Bisbal, Franco De Vita, 50 Cent, Akon, and Pitbull have called upon them to give their music some flair.

Wisin’s aggressive and in-your-face sound is masterfully complimented by Yandel’s harmonies and hooks. Over 13 years of partnership have allowed them to continually grow and evolve their sound by challenging themselves to surpass their previous work. The crowning jewel of this partnership was the monster album Wisin VS Yandel: Los Extraterrestres. This album was the launch pad to the reggaeton club sound we know today. On tour, Wisin y Yandel have proven to be a force to be reckoned with, becoming the only artists in the Urban Latin Music genre to sell out both the Staples Center and Madison Square Garden in the U.S.

With combined album sales of almost 125 million, Enrique Iglesias, Jennifer Lopez and Wisin Y Yandel are more than just superstars, they are some of the most dominant powerhouses in music today. Known for their spectacular and engaging stage shows, Jennifer Lopez, Enrique Iglesias and Wisin & Yandel will give fans the ultimate summer concert experience; a night filled with audio visual amazement and non-stop dancing. ¡Suelta! █

FAMILY

he once in a lifetime spectacular adventure, with fire-breathing dragons, and a captivating story “How To Train Your Dragon,” will appear in Washington, D.C. at the Verizon Center from July 19 through 22 for eight astounding shows.

The live show was created by DreamWorks Animation, producers of the Academy Award®-nominated film, How to Train Your Dragon, which grossed approximately $500 million at the worldwide box office and opened as the #1 film in over 30 countries. The show features 23 ferociously talented dragons, some bigger than a city bus, all flying across the venue.

“We are very excited to have the How to Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular show,” said David Touhey, senior vice president and general manager of Verizon Center, “to see dragons come to life and let the audience immerse themselves in the story line will be an unforgettable experience.”

The spectacular is guaranteed fun for the entire family and is apt for all ages. It will be especially magical for those who enjoy the mythology of the dragon creature. The story is set in the mythical world of Vikings and wild dragons. Based on the book by Cressida Cowell, it centers on Hiccup, a Viking teenager who doesn’t fit in with his tribe’s

longstanding tradition of heroic dragon slayers. Hiccup’s world is turned upside down when he comes across a dragon that challenges him and his fellow Vikings to see the world from an entirely different point of view. The story presents a vision so grand in scale that only DreamWorks Animation and Global Creatures could bring How to Train Your Dragon to life in front of a live audience.

“In our film, audiences around the world were transported to the mythical world of Vikings and dragons… and now, we are excited to immerse them in a one-of-a-kind live event in How To Train Your Dragon Live Spectacular,” said Jeffrey Katzenberg, chief executive officer of DreamWorksAnimation.

According to the press release the cast of performers is assisted by an international technical team who has collectively created many of the world’s most memorable spectacles. The team is led by award-winning director Nigel Jamieson, who won the 2011 Helpmann Award as Best Director for his production of Opera Australia’s La Fanciulla del West, as well as production designer Peter England and costume projection designer Dan Potra. The dragons themselves are created by Sonny Tilders and his team at The Creature Technology Company, whose work includes Walking With Dinosaurs – the Arena Spectacular. The cast of 23 dragons pays homage to all of the favorites from the DreamWorks Animation film, including the single largest animatronic creature

ever made by The Creature Technology Company. The stunning score features compositions from Icelandic singer-songwriter Jonsi from Sigur Ros and Oscar-nominated British film composer John Powell, who created the original score for the feature film.

The show breaks every rule of theatrical entertainment to fully immerse audiences in ways that have not been attempted before. It utilizes the full venue, maximizing every dimension of the performance space to transport audiences into a mythical world of fire-breathing dragons who soar overhead at great speeds. The state-of-the-art animatronic technology and large-scale cinematic projections interact seamlessly with the live actors, who bring DreamWorks Animation’s heart-warming story to life through theatrical storytelling, martial arts and acrobatics.

With critics around the world calling the live show “Nothing less than sensational” it is a must see event, but before going to the show, do not forget your fierce Viking stare and find the dragon’s blind spot, the two major rules to train your own dragon. Don’t miss this show at the Verizon Center, July 19th through the 22nd! █

FESTIVAL

n Sunday, August 12, Baltimore County will transform into summer’s premier spot for “El Festival Latino de Maryland”. All roads lead to the Timonium Fairgrounds where music

and Latino pride will collide. This year, the festival will celebrate a wide range of acts that span through the entire musical spectrum from grupero, reggaeton, and vallenato, to bachata. If the music doesn’t call your name, then definitely come for the food. From pupusas to bandejas paisas, the festival will have a little bit of everything for everyone, just like mom used to make.

Kicking off the lineup is a hodgepodge of local DMV artists like Dewin, Doval G La Controversia, Jenni Hilin, Impacto Urbano, The Orphans and Durank. Each artist will give their own spin and add local flavor to the festival’s music offerings. Come for any of the headliners and stay to support these amazing local acts, you might be surprised at the talent we have in our own backyard!

Make sure to dust off your cowboy boots and hats and get ready to sing along to Chicago’s own grupero sensation Montez de Durango. They will be performing some of their biggest hits onstage at the fairgrounds. If grupero music is not your thing, that’s ok, we’ve got you covered. Come anyway and enjoy some authentic dembow beats with Puerto Rican reggaeton duo Plan B performing hits from their latest album as well as classics from back in the day.

If you are looking to get in touch with your Colombian side and get down with some heart-pumping, cardio workout approved cumbia and vallenato, you are in luck. El Tigre Sabanero Aniceto Molina will be present with his accordion and sombrero vueltiao to make you sway. Salvadorian sensations Mr. Pelon 503 and Hermanos Flores will also take the stage on Sunday night.

Still not satisfied? El Príncipe de la Bachata, Frank Reyes will be filling everyone’s heart with bachata rhythms and unique vocal styling that make him one of Dominican Republic’s premier bachata recording artists.

Regardless of your musical preference or what type of home cooking you are craving, you should make an effort to come out and enjoy a lovely fun-filled afternoon brimming with music and food just like back home. DELIVERS SHAPESHIFTER ALBUMorn Carlos Augusto Alves Santana in Jalisco, Mexico in 1947, Carlos Santana found his success with the band which took his last name in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s with a unique take on rock music

that included Latin and African instrumentation and rhythms. The band incorporated timbales and congas into the bluesy, trippy and now classic rock sound popular at the time. After their first wave of success the band retreated into increasingly experimental (and less and less commercially viable) works until the late 1990’s saw the release of the surprisingly commercia-lly popular Supernatural (1999). Popular artists of the

day (Rob Thomas on “Smooth”, The Product G&B on “Maria, Maria”, lead singer of Mana Fher Olvera on “Corazon Espinado”) collaborated on the album to achieve widespread pop appeal. Santana attempted a similar pop formula on the follow-up to Supernatu-ral, 2002’s Shaman, to considerably less commercial success. After this second peak of popular acclaim, Santana continued to release records aimed at appealing towards the modern pop audience. 2012’s Shapeshifter sees the band returning to its political and classic rock/jazz fusion roots.

The back cover of Santana’s latest album, Shapes-hifter, contains the following message from Carlos Santana: “The young country of Australia made a conscious decision and collectively agreed to offer

an apology to the Native Aborigines in 2008. Inspi-red by their understanding of what had transpired, the United States also signed The Native American Apology Resolution into law in 2009 by our President. I encourage any and all countries (that have not as yet done so) to acknowledge the first people of their land and make this a collective global effort.”

Since Santana’s first peak of popular success came in an era of widespread commitment to politically awareness (arguably naïve though it may have been) action, Carlos Santana’s hopeful dedication to social consciousness in the present is not surprising. Though Santana’s dedication might resemble the self-righteous

Santana & The Allman Brothers @ The Merriweather Post PavillionMonday. July 30thFor more info: www.merriweathermusic.com

>>>>> platitudes of lesser artists, Santana’s compassionate, trenchant, music redeems, refigures and

complements his off-stage/out-of-studio preaching.

The music is politically conscious in the best way. Breaching the mystical (spiritual) and the humane, Santana’s music lends a wisdom that could be powerfully humbling as in 1974’s “Practice What You Preach” from the great Borboletta (1974) or “Samba

Pa Ti” from 1970’s redoubtable Abraxas. Santana’s famous one-two punch of “Black

Magic Woman/Oye Como Va” (made famous through their legendary

1969 Woodstock performance), is a fitting link to Fleetwood Mac—“ Black Magic Woman” is a Fleetwood Mac cover-- another band who explores the mystical (particularly Stevie Nicks: “Rhiannon”, “Black Ma-gic Woman”, “Dreams”, etc. )

to enrich revelations of the human individual.

Santana’s grea-test strength has

always been his gift for emotionally evocative guitar playing. The Latin

twist (“Oye Como Va”, Latin style

percussion) on rock he achieved with the band,

tapped into the bluesy legacy of the rock genre to striking effect. Through a lengthy ca-reer, his ability to fuse melody with recogniza-

ble human experience has remained a constant.

Here on Shapeshifter, the poppy vocal guests that accompanied Santana’s emotive music and guitar pla-ying on Supernatural and Shaman, are mostly absent (with the exception of the very solid “Eres La Luz” which sees Anthony Vargas providing vocals). The myriad vocalists on Santana’s more commercial efforts not only updated his sound but also re-contextualized and focused his soulful instrumental expressions. On his most popular hits with Michelle Branch (“Game of Love”), Rob Thomas (“Smooth”), Fher Olvera (“Corazon Espinado”) and The Product G&B (“Maria, Maria”), vocals served to enrich Santana’s skillful, me-lodic guitar by answering his throwback classic rock virtuosity with wide-eyed modern pop soul in an array of iterations (Thomas, Branch, Olvera). This com-pleteness of expression is definitely missed, however, Shapeshifter’s intent is to highlight and intensify the effect of Santana’s instrumentation (with the guitar at the forefront of course). Shapeshifter aims for a purity of soulful effect (songs like Metatron for instance) and to a large extent succeeds. This method unites Santana’s instrumentation to Shapeshifter’s mysti-cal/spiritual conceptualization and lends it meaning through its emphasis on human emotion. Thus the political moves are connected to a larger meaning (check the Native American album art) of history, faith, and humanity.

Santana performs at Merriweather Post Pavilion with the Allman Brothers, Monday, July 30, 2012. █

FOOD

By Manu Mayor

he name says a lot. Parrillas del Sur focuses on what it does best... parrillas! This restau-rant is like a little piece of the border between Argentina and Bolivia. It’s not surprising since one of the owners, Teresa, is

Argentinean and her husband is from Bolivia. What we get on the menu is a pleasant mix of Argentine BBQ and Bolivian dishes that go together like peas and carrots, like white on rice, like (well you get the picture)!

Without a doubt, the Parrilla Argentina familiar is the main draw. If you know Argentinean food you know the main focus is on meat! Beef of all kinds and a lot of it! The composition of the dish might be familiar to you from other places that offer these dishes: Short ribs, tenderloin steak, chicken thighs, chinchulin, Argie sausage, morcilla, etc... What might not be familiar to you however is tasting all those cuts with the right balance of crispness and juiciness. The meat here is juicy! Let me say it again, the meat here is

JUICY! I hope you got the hint. This is what makes or breaks a parrilla and they got it right. They got it right and juicy!

The Parrilla Argentina comes with a choice of sides from, white rice, rice with cheese, yucca, fries or plan-tains. So which is the best partner to the parrilla? That depends on your taste. Other dishes include milanesa de carne Argentina and on the Bolivian side, fricase, salteñas and silpancho. As appetizers you can find empanadas Tucumanas and cuñapes, a cheese bread specialty from Santa Cruz, Bolivia.

The venue is welcoming and has a familiar feeling to it. One of the walls is made to look like stones and near the entrance, a water wheel moves at its own leisure giving a nice calming effect as soon as you walk in the door. A wooden stand next to it makes you recall places further south from here. One side of the venue also has a stage, where a show called “Las Maridas” takes places for ladies only on Wednesdays. You can also find karaoke nights and live music on a regular basis. The venue is new and the owners are

Somewhere between Argentina & Boliviastill adding on to the layout, the menu, and the drinks based on customer feedback. A new wooden corner bar has just been setup in the back that will soon fea-ture a number of South American drinks just in time for the hot summer months!

Parrillas del Sur pays good attention to its custo-mer service. All of the staff is friendly and incredibly upbeat. A lesson many restaurants could learn from. The owners here understand that running a family restaurant doesn’t mean you can abandon excepted standards. If you are in the mood for good parrilla, good service, and reasonable prices then Parrillas del Sur in Annandale, VA is a no-brainer. The fact that they have the best chimichurri sauce around doesn’t hurt either! For more information visit: http://www.parrillasdelsur.com/.

The Contagious RITMO of

LOCAL TALENT

by Veronica Brown

udith “Judicita” Condezo has been dancing since the age of 3. Her parents are salsa promoters in the DC area and she grew up in the world of Latin dance, meeting and working with artists like Celia Cruz an Jerry Rivera. Her passion for salsa led her to create her first dance group in high school and this continued

into college as she started the salsa performance group Tumbao at her Alma Mater Virginia Tech. Judicita now leads and performs with Ritmo DMV a Latin dance group she started with the help of her dance partner Doh Kim. They have performed all over the east coast, internationally, and have appeared on national television. This dynamic dance group made up of dancers from around the globe has been showcased at the Hispanic Heritage Awards, Prince George’s County Latino Festival, various national and international salsa congresses and they currently have an upcoming performance at the prestigious New York Salsa Congress in September. We chatted with Judicita about being a Salsera in the DMV area.

KH: When was the pivotal moment when you decided to pursue your passion for dance?J: After graduating from Virginia Tech, I decided to take some time off to spend with family. I joined a local salsa group and participated in the New York Salsa Congress. During rehearsals I sat down and observed the magnificent choreographs that were on stage and I promised myself it would be my choreography up there one day. Now that my group will be performing there, it has all come full circle and I am excited to watch my dreams become reality.

KH: Who is your favorite salsa icon?J: Celia Cruz is my salsa idol. I had the honor of meeting Celia and she blew me away with her personality. I only hope that I can emulate her success and humility.

KH: Where do you look for inspiration for your Ritmo DMV choreographies? J: It comes from music, and it starts with a great song. I

create a story out of the music, dance must tell the story of the song. You can have great moves and cool tricks but if you don’t connect with the audience through a story then it just won’t work.

KH: What would you say to someone in the area who wants to learn how to dance salsa and doesn’t know where to start?J: The DMV is a great place for beginners. Many places offer free or affordable salsa lessons. Two great spots are Clarendon Grill, and Cherrydale Firehouse, both located in Arlington. Get some people together and have fun it’s all about the practice. You can also always just talk to me and join Ritmo DMV!

KH: What salsa is in your current playlist?J: I have three songs in my head at the moment, “Recuerdame”, by Marc Anthony and La Quinta Estacion. “Regresa a mi”, by En Clave, and “Quimbara”, by Celia Cruz.

KH: How important has your Peruvian heritage been in your dancing?J: Very important. I often find myself using terms from Peruvian folklore dances when I am in the studio, I danced marinera and festejo as a child and these foundations add another dimension to my dancing and my choreographies.

KH: What are your favorite salsa spots in the DMV area?J: I like Salsa Room in Arlington, and Lucky Strike in DC. When I feel like doing some hardcore salsa, I head over to Mr. Mambos a salsa meet-up that takes place the second and fourth Saturday of every month at the DC Dance Collective Studio.

KH: If you weren’t dancing, what would you be doing?J: If I wasn’t dancing I would be pursuing my academic career in Bio-Defense. I have a B.A in Biology and I plan to eventually get my masters and then a P.H.D in Pathogenic Bacteriology. I have two very distinct passions but I am as

passionate about biology as I am about dancing. KH: What has dance taught you?J: Patience, as a director, a businesswoman, and a performer. Discipline, due to a back injury I suffered some years back, I’ve had to work that much harder to prevent any further injuries. Recognizing my limits and learning to as we say, “guardar pan para mayo”, has been a valuable lesson. Finally, dance has taught me how to be myself. Dance allows me to express what is inside me and in turn, this self-expression has helped me figure out who I am as a person.

ead-to-toe prints are in for summer. Show your creative genius by mixing-and-matching prints in bright colors, pastels, or playful designs inspired by everyday objects. Candy apple red, neon blue, lime green, and electric yellow hues that were seen in the spring join forces in summer’s eye-catching print looks. Switch out lime green and substitute a cool refreshing mint green when putting together pastel print outfits. Also, look playful and chic by wearing standout fruit and vegetable, floral, or aquatic-

themed prints. These are just a few examples of what designers have been showcasing on the runways. Pair these looks with print heels in the same color family as your outfit, or with metallic accented shoes.

VENUE

“HAVE YOU BEEN TO THE FILLMORE YET?” is a question many Washingtonians have been asking their friends ever since the much-anticipated venue opened its doors in downtown Silver Spring, MD late last year. The Fillmore without a doubt instantly became one of the nicest concert halls in our area. This space looks impeccable. The concept for the venue was inspired by the legendary Fillmore in San Francisco, California (the Mecca of psyche-delic music and 1960s counterculture featuring acts like the Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, and Jefferson Airplane to name a few). The Fillmore at Silver Spring features red velvet curtains, black fixtures, wooden floors, and chandeliers that give the venue an elegant feel as you walk into the main concert area. A generously sized sta-ge is the focal point here, and the venue can accommodate up to 2,000 concertgoers, very comfortably. The cool air is constantly flowing on the main floor, blue lights illuminate the various bar areas keeping things cool even when the music gets hot!

Every spot is a great spot to see the stage, whether you like to be in the middle of the action on the main floor or want to watch the show calmly from the seated balcony or

VIP areas. The venue also boasts several full service bars, two on the main level, one in the upper level, and one in the lower level each equipped with its own seating area and LCD screens displaying the show so you never miss a beat. All bars run along an entire side of the room making it easier to get your drink on!

When the lights are dimmed, and it’s time for the show to start, the professional lighting takes the experience to another level. The colors and sounds all come together to create a first-rate atmosphere and deliver a beautiful show each time. Adding to the comfort of the experience is the excellent location! In addition to the many restaurants and bars surrounding the venue in the downtown Silver Spring area, there is a 2,000+ public parking garage only two blocks away, which is free on evenings and on weekends. Since the venue is also metro accessible via the Silver Spring Metro Station, all the shows are scheduled to end in time to catch the last red line train out.

You can find all types of artists playing at The Fillmore, and lately quite a few Latin artists are making their way there. On August 22nd, Argentine rock heavyweights, Los

Enanitos Verdes will grace the stage for some “Lamento Bo-liviano” sing-a-longs. El Grupo Niche will perform on July 19th, and DC’s very own ska/reggae/rock band Nayas, will host their 10 year anniversary and CD-release party there on July 20th. To finish the month off with flying colors, Gianmarco will make his way back to the area playing the Fillmore on July 27th.

The Fillmore is easy to get to, well designed, and an overall great concert going experience! What else can you ask for? Next time an artist you like is headlining at The Fill-more, don’t think twice about it, get your tickets and enjoy a night of hassle-free entertainment. █

NIGHTLIFE

KH: What did you want to be when you were a kid?J: A Doctor. I wanted to be a doctor. It turned out a very different way. (laughs).

KH: How did you get started into DJing?J: Skipping parties. I still remember. Started DJing with the original Walkman (laughs). I had to buy a second one and just went very old school, pause, play, pause play. After that a teacher from middle school found out I was DJing at parties so he helped me start DJing at the middle school events, like proms, homecomings..etc. After that I actually started DJing at the Washington Spirit boats,

I was DJing for different ethnics groups and I had to have everything not just Latin music. No one knows about that part of my DJing career. Soon after I started DJing at the clubs and that’s when everything got very busy.

KH: How did you start DJing on the radio?J: I started talking to concert promoter Cato Zegarra. Kept blowing up his phone every day until he finally gave me a chance

to DJ at the sold-out Lean Back Concert at the Patriot Center. After that I

started opening for the all the sold-out concerts like Daddy

Yankee, Aventura, Enrique Iglesias..etc.. At one of

these concerts I met JR, so I started blowing

up his phone too on a daily basis.

One day I was having a bad

day and he called me to start DJing at

the radio at El Zol’s guaya

guaya show. So, gotta thank JR for getting me to start at El Zol. Been at the station over 7 years now.

KH: What artists/DJs do you get inspiration from?

J: Top of my head my favorite artists to listen to is Los Bukis, Marc Anthony, Aventura, Vicente

little kid but I still remember. People think Joe is so lucky for being at the radio, djing..etc, I’m lucky that I’m alive and here. If you think about it, right now sometimes we complain about little things, try to go over there and be a kid in the middle of a war. That’s something very few people know about me.

KH: Tell us about your other projects aside from DJing?J: Aside from DJing, I’ve produced a lot of events. I brought artists like PlanB, Alexis y Fido, Voltio. I was running all these concerts before they got very big. The newest project is being an on-air personality. Many people don’t know but I’m the guy behind “La Situacion” which is hitting hard right now. He is a very hilarious Salvadorean character. Outside of that, family, father, husband, son.

KH: Where can we find DJ Joe nowadays?J: Right now you can find me Wednesdays at The Palace with El Zol’s live broadcast. Fridays at Midtown, Saturdays I’m at LOVE nightclub with Migo Productions and DJ Xplosive. Mondays I’m at Diamond Lounge (old star lounge) with the Dream team, Rey Parker, DJ Xplosive, DJ Legend and DJ G.

Fernandez, Juan Gabriel, Marco Antonio Solis, in English my favorite is Brian Adams. They see me at the club yelling and mixing “get it from the back, get it from the back”, then I go home and I play some Bukis! They don’t know that side of me (laughs). For DJs my favorite ones are Playero, Nelson. That’s my times. En Estados Unidos guys like Camilo.

KH: What makes you different from other DJs?J: It’s different. Like before it just wasn’t how I DJed, it was the feedback I got from the people. I could also go and play very different genres. One hour I could go somewhere and play punta, then rock, then hip hop, then reggaeton and bachata. Nowadays, it’s the way I market myself, its not only DJing. I’m always consistent, now I know how to market myself well. I couldn’t market myself if people didn’t accept me. I’m going into my 14th year DJing.

KH: What song never gets old?J: Las clasicas. If I had a choice... I think I would have to say Mana’s Oye Mi Amor, Big Boy’s La Voz Sensual, any songs from the first Aventura CD, old school reggaeton like la cripta, those never get old.

KH: What’s something that no one knows about DJ Joe?J: Um, something very deep. Most people don’t know, by the time my little brother was born, I was like 5 or 6 and had to experience la Guerra del Salvador. I still remember we had to hide under the beds, hearing helicopters, hearing people screaming, el toque de queda where you had to be home by a certain time. I was
