Welcome to the third edition of Sustain for 2015.
The picture theme for this edition of
Sustain is Port Julia - commemorating
their success at the Keep Australia
Beautiful National Clean Beaches
Awards, where they won the
community action and partnerships
category. Congratulations Port Julia!
The end of term 3 is looming up on us, and schools across the state are busily working
on their submission for the KESAB & Recyclers SA Video Competition. We are looking
forward to their presentations, showcasing their schools recycling efforts and the
partnerships they have developed with their local recycling depot.
Judging is about to start for Sustainable Communities and we have entries from all
over the State, including Fowlers Bay to the West, Farina to the North, Mount Gambier
to the South and Monash to the East. We will be sharing photos and project
snapshots on our Facebook page during judging, so make sure you like our page to
stay up to date.

The dynamics of KESAB environmental solutions continues as the South Australian community collectively
builds on a more urgent need to engage and respond through environmentally based sustainable
practices and behaviour. Demonstrating the scope of engagement and activity by KESAB and our skilled
Education Team I take this opportunity to share some stories from across my desk that have occurred
during the past several months.
Office of Green Industries SA
July 1st announced the beginning of the “new” Zero Waste SA with the Office of Green Industries SA(GISA)
commencing operations. KESAB environmental solutions is pleased to continue our close working
relationship with GISA with a revised Service Level Agreement to deliver Litter Index Data and social
research, Wipe Out Waste schools program and implement litter education, campaigns and resources in
partnership with stakeholders who significantly add value to KESAB initiatives.
Local Nuisance & Litter Control Bill Consultation
“At last, recognition that litter is pollution!” says KESAB
During August the EPA conducted a number of community consultation sessions and presentations across metropolitan and
regional/ rural South Australia outlining the proposed Local Nuisance & Litter Control Bill. KESAB has been advocating to
respective South Australian Governments for many years to review and modernise ways and means, underpinned by regulatory
approaches, to strengthen litter reduction and enforcement in South Australia.
The National Litter Index data recently released by Keep Australia Beautiful National shows South Australia, whilst maintaining the
leading edge in beverage container recovery, is lagging behind other states when it comes to other litter streams including
plastic, paper and in some instances, illegal dumping.
The proposed LN&LC Bill also addresses illegal dumping, dust and noise at the local level encouraging councils and authorised
agencies and bodies (KESAB?) to work with community to place the responsibility fairly and squarely on litterers and polluters.
Outcomes from the consultation process will ultimately shape the final Bill to be debated in Parliament later in 2015 or early 2016
thereby enabling South Australia to once again capture the mantle of being the cleanest State in Australia.
India Trade Mission
In August, KESAB was invited to participate in a large Trade Mission to India to build
relationships and identify potential global environmental partners for the future. Needless to
say India has huge environmental challenges with the population of New Delhi alone being
larger than the whole of Australia.
Along with other trade delegates representing a variety of sectors including defence, food
and wine, water, agriculture, sports and arts, KESAB sat alongside Zero Waste SA to engage
Indian stakeholders in waste, education and options for vocational training.
From a KESAB perspective, the opportunity highlighted global needs that quite often
Australians, living in the “lucky country”, do not fully appreciate. With South Australia a
recognised leader in waste management and our aspiration towards Zero Waste, combined
with our culture and understanding of waste diversion and continuous improvement to
maximise waste as a resource, we look forward to developing long term relationships in India,
especially with a strong community interface through KESAB education and teaching skills
developed over almost 50 years.
SA Water Partnership
KESAB environmental solutions and SA Water have announced a three year program to work with DECD developing curriculum
based learning resources and lessons for APY Land schools and communities. Focus will build education, awareness and
understanding about water quality and quantity in the remote aboriginal lands. Resources will embrace teacher and student
Professional Development with action and lesson plans supported by interactive resources and learning.

Sustainable Communities Awards Planning
Following the huge success of last years KESAB Sustainable Awards program by broadening presentations and show casing
participating groups, KESAB is already working on the 2015 Awards scheduled Friday November 13th 2015.
This year, the Sustainable Communities program has over 150 category entries and judging for the program is underway.
Behind the scenes planning of venue and event program to “fit” as many presentations and information sharing into the
program is a challenge. This year we are seeking to include displays by KESAB stakeholders and partners to encourage interface
between “Green” sectors and the community.
Community action is the core ingredient of Sustainable Communities and the face of environmental sustainability continues to
change and demand responses to new challenges.
The Awards event is one way of ensuring information exchange and strengthening communication between the broad
spectrum of community groups and actions, and each year KESAB is seeking to value add to overall environmental outcomes.

Immaculate Heart of Mary school, got into a week of nude food for Keep Australia Beautiful week.
To see whether there was a noticeable difference, they conducted a Bin Materials Audit in
a ‘normal’ week, and then one day during their Nude Food Week and ..
Their overall material to landfill was reduced by 58%, which included:
a 58% reduction in Food and Drink Packaging
an 85% reduction in Uneaten (still wrapped) food.
Furthermore, there was a positive response from families, who found that being able to see
the audit results laid out at school at the end of the day was critical in helping them make
simple changes.
Well done to Immaculate Heart of Mary -we look forward to seeing if they can keep up
their Nude Food culture.

Clean Site® - Focus on SA High Schools
KESAB’s Clean Site® program provides industry educational material developed
and implemented in partnership with state and local government, Master Builders
SA, Housing Industry Association and building and construction industry
organisations.
The program delivers education and training embracing best practice on
construction sites through on site demonstration and information resource
material to engage the building and construction sectors in environmental
sustainability, best practice site management and resource recovery
opportunities.
Deliverables embrace structured environmental toolbox inductions engaging
students through a state wide network of high school students via the
Doorways2Construction initiative as a result of a partnership with the Construction
Industry Training Board.
Learning and education is facilitated by a skilled trainer delivering materials and resources developed by key stakeholders and
regularly reviewed and upgraded to meet environmental sustainability education standards and regulatory changes.
Recent highlights have included:
Delivery of ‘Environmental Toolboxes’ which support industry health and
safety inductions on major construction sites to provide onsite action to
complement and support Environmental Management Systems, e.g., over
200 contractors on BADGE major construction projects
Increased focus on Construction Industry Training Board
Doorways2Construction program with delivery of environmental toolbox
inductions to statewide network that included 20 High Schools, over 470
students and 30 teachers over the past 12 months.
Recently, Clean Site® program coordinator, Dick Olesinski travelled to the south
east visiting schools in Bordertown, Millicent and Mount Gambier delivering
environmental toolbox induction training and reaching almost 100 students.
Participants completed assessments which provide them with the environmental
awareness and knowledge required on today’s modern construction site.
KESAB’s Clean Site® program provides a simple and cost effective approach to the building and construction sector, schools
and councils, to raise the bar in order to comply with environmental legislation to ensure a sustainable future for South Australia.
City of Playford Green Organics Project
KESAB conducted a food waste pilot program with the City of Playford between May
and July 2015. The project targeted a sample of residents with a green organics
collection service.
Approximately 200 residents were engaged through face to face conversations (via
doorstepping). Doorstepping provided an opportunity to deliver education which
assists residents in understanding the full potential of the green organics bin for food
recycling. One third of residents spoken to through the doorstepping program
pledged their commitment to food scrap recycling, allowing a sticker demonstrating
their commitment to be placed on their green organics bin.
Inspections of the waste and green organics bins of households who took the pledge
were undertaken over two collection weeks, to measure if residents were diverting
their food scraps. Inspections showed almost 70% of green bins, and approximately
15% of waste bins, contained food.
To complete the project, a bin audit of waste and green bins was conducted to measure the diversion rate of food. Data was
compared between residents who had been spoken to through the program, and residents who hadn’t.
The audit showed that people who received face to face education diverted an average of 3.80kg of food in their green bin
per week; three times as much as people not spoken to through the program. Over the course of a year, this would equate to
around 100kgs of food per household diverted from landfill. An excellent result!

‘Stuff!’
Litter Less Official Launch
‘Stuff! Making sustainable choices at home’
Have you ever wondered what to do with stuff at home that you no longer want or need?
EnviroMethodTM has developed a ‘Stuff! Making sustainable choices at home’ education CD resource.
The resource is designed to empower students to make sustainable choices when disposing of common
household items.
Curriculum based, the CD resource contains activity sheets,
SMART Notebook files, cross-curricular lesson ideas relating to
recycling, and fascinating recycling facts!
Targeted at primary and middle years students, the resource is
$49.95 (plus postage) and can be ordered from the
EnviroMethodTM website, www.enviromethod.edu.au.
Litter Less, the new curriculum linked multi learning resource developed by KESAB
environmental solutions was launched Wednesday 26th August by Minister for Education
and Child Development Hon Susan Close MP.
Alberton Primary School students and teachers were the first school to use the resource
undertaking a litter hazards and impacts, and a litter breakdown activity with a focus to
create a litter free school.
Following teacher surveys and extensive research of international litter resources, and the
involvement of a supportive working group, KESAB Education Team identified need for a
new Litter Less learning resource targeted at Years 4 – 7 incorporating multiple learning
styles and interactive aspects. The resource is built on a platform of lessons structured
around three themes supported by inquiry questions which are key to understanding
littering behaviour and the effect of litter in the environment.
Litter Less lessons have been written to align with the Australian Curriculum and take cross
curriculum priorities and general capabilities into consideration. The learning program
embraces local, national and global contexts whilst considering the environmental, social and economic impacts of littering.
The Litter Less resource has been developed by KESAB through a partnership approach supported by the Australian Packaging
Covenant, Wrigley’s and Zero Waste SA.
