The Cutting Edge

Monthly Newsletter of the Ottawa Lapsmith and Mineral Club

Now that the snow is melting away some of us are thinking of places we would like to go collecting in 2018. The following is a review of the club's fieldtrip policies: 1) The Corporation does not have a position called "Fieldtrip Director", thus, the Corporation does not have any official fieldtrips or fieldtrip insurance.

2) Within the club there are volunteers who will allow others to accompany them in their travels. Dates, destinations, meeting times etc will be advertised in the club bulletin as a service to members.

3) Both members and non-members may tag along at their own risk and expense. Be prepared to be left behind once the volunteer calls it a day.

4) If there is a limitation on visitors preference will be given to club members.

5) The club does not provide transportation, accommodations, food or medical services. You must drive yourself or make private arrangements with others.

6) Persons under legal age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

7) Some localities require prove of insurance. Our volunteers do not go to such places.

For example:

I am going collecting in the Bay of Fundy April 21-29. I am making arrangements for myself. I will be driving myself. Anyone who wishes to tag along may, and we will share expenses.

Another club volunteer, Frank Stoyles, has requested that others volunteer to lead local collecting trips. His knowledge of where to go is limited and exhausted.

Trekking across Cambodia

Monday, April 16, 2018, 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. Location: OLMC Workshop 1000 Brookfield Road, Ottawa, ON

Dr Piilonen will be talking about hunting gems in Cambodia and about the Canadian Museum of Nature's large research program to describe the Ratanakiri Volcanic Province from which gem zircons are sourced.

Dr. Paula Piilonen is a researcher at the Canadian Museum of Nature. She specializes in studying the minerals in alkaline rocks that contain rare-earth elements such as zirconium, niobium and titanium. Her work focuses on understanding how these rare elements form minerals, how they behave in different geochemical environments, and what their presence or absence can tell us about the rocks in which they formed.

For more information about Dr Piilonen, you can visit: http://nature.ca/en/research-collections/science-experts/paula-c-piilonen

The fieldtrip season is on!

Once again, I am willing to take groups to some of the sites that I like - Beryl Pit, Craigmont, Perth, maybe Mountain Grove, Rideau Ferry, but I am limited in two ways:

1. I intend to travel quite a bit this summer. Nevertheless, I can work in 4 trips or so, but, 2. I do not know many of the more local sites that would probably be of interest to club members.

It would be great if some people could share the field trip coordination with me. Someone who knows a local area would be great!

And, this invitation includes other Central Canadian Federation of Mineralogical Societies who may want to invite OLMC members!

I will depart Ottawa Saturday April 21st and return Sunday April 29th.

I will be leaving for the Bay of Fundy, Saturday April 21, 9 AM in front of the workshop.

I will be staying near the Quebec/New Brunswick border that night and arriving in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia late April 22.

There are many possible places to stay in Parrsboro. Early favorites are: http://thesunshineinn.net http://www.riverviewcottages.ca/accommodations

I will be meeting my Guide, Doug Wilson, at the Amethyst Boutique (902-489-4367), 76 Victoria St in Parrsboro at 9 AM Monday morning. His fee is $150/day.

Agenda is as follows and it is weather dependant:

Randy Corcoran for the boat trips is most able to accommodate the group and carries the appropriate insurance. Please note that the weather will be a particularly limiting factor this time of year. All boat trips will be contingent on marine conditions on the day of the trip and Randy’s decisions aren’t negotiable. For safety reasons, Randy will have the full authority to decide whether to go ahead with an excursion. He is the captain; his decision is law. Randy will be operating a Zodiac that can carry as many as 6 passengers. He can do one or two runs a day at $300/run.

All collecting will be beach collecting. It is illegal to collect on the cliffs. Most trips will require some hiking and relatively intense physical exertion at times, some, just a long walk on the beach.

Here's what I propose:

Monday April 23 – Parrsboro shore – Partridge Island, Wasson’s Bluff, MacKay Head; walking/hiking only. Each site is about 4-5 hours to visit, so Partridge Island in the morning, Wasson’s Bluff in the afternoon. MacKay Head can be an alternate choice if we need to cancel a boat trip. Minerals: excellent zeolites – stilbite, chabazite (exceptional), heulandite, analcime, natrolite plus

calcite, rare native copper, chrysocolla; MacKay Head: quartz cave flowers and cutting material.

Tuesday April 24 – Free day – Fundy Geological Museum (I can arrange a tour), Ottawa House Museum, Age of Sail Museum, Joggins Fossil Centre (UNESCO site). Shopping: Tyson’s Fine Minerals, Amethyst Boutique, Fundy Treasures, several excellent antique shops; Dinner: Black Rock Bistro.

Wednesday April 25 (alternative day: Friday April 27) – Five Islands and/or Two Islands by boat. Put in at Five Islands wharf in the morning. Collecting time will be 9-10 hours due to the tides. Plan for about a 12-14 hour day (if desired the trip can be reduced to 5-8 hours). Minerals: excellent zeolites – stilbite, chabazite, gmelinite, analcime, natrolite plus calcite. Very

fine agate and jasper are abundant, some very large pieces to 10lbs or more.

Thursday April 26 (alternative day: Friday April 27) – Cap d’Or / Bennet’s Brook by boat. Put in at Horseshoe Cove in the morning. Collecting time will be approximately 9-10 hours due to the tides. Plan for about a 12-14 hour day (if desired the trip can be reduced to 5-8 hours). Minerals: excellent zeolites – stilbite, chabazite, heulandite, mesolite, thomsonite, analcime plus

apophyllite, native copper, calcite, rare chalcocite. Agate and jasper are also available, water-worn mesolite and thomsonite are cuttable, rare chrysocolla and copper-included eolite/silicate can be spectacular.

Friday – Free Day or rescheduled boat trip

Alternatives options:

April 25 or 26 – Minas Shore – Whale Cove, Rainy Cove, Cheverie – 2.5-hour drive early in the morning; leave Parrsboro at 8:00 am; arrive for collecting at 10:30 am. Collect all day. Minerals: calcite, barite, manganite, gypsum (massive pink, white, grey, black; excellent alabaster

with embedded selenite crystals, satin spar – white, pink and orange), howlite, probertite, danburite (massive nodules), rare fluorite, celestite, anhydrite. Lovely wave-sculpted alabaster pieces are abundant at the Cheverie beach locality. Collectible specimens of fair quality of most minerals are abundant.

April 25 or 26 – Ross Creek – 3-hour drive early in the morning; leave Parrsboro at 8:00 am; arrive for collecting at 11:00 am. Collect all day. Minerals: Stilbite, heulandite, calcite. Excellent abundant agate and jasper with rare petrified limb

casts, some with amethyst or smoky quartz cores, occur at Lime Cove, a short hike.

Doug will check with various businesses and museums for hours of operation. Some may not be open for the season yet by the time of your trip; however, they will sometimes open for a group.

Assuming 12 people boat expeditions will cost $62.50/day. Land expeditions will cost $12.50/day. You will need to bring warm clothing, waterproof clothing, hiking boots and minimum collecting tools. This is beach collecting. If you can pry it out of the mud and carry it, it is yours. Doug will be bringing heavy tools if needed.

I can take two passengers in my vehicle. Club members and non-club members may accompany at their own risk and expense. You can meet me there if you so wish. Expect a $1000 trip. I request that serious parties contact me. Collecting fees will be payable to me in Parrsboro. Be forewarned!! The Bay of Fundy in late April is not the tropics. Expect cold, windy weather with snow and ice on the cliffs. The water will be even colder.

The 52nd annual gem, mineral and jewellery show for the club will be held at the Nepean Sportsplex, September 15-16, 2018. Unfortunately, the club could not get the next weekend, but maybe next year.

Based on last year's post-show meeting, there are some intriguing ideas to make improvements including advertising and how certain areas of the show could work better.

One of those areas is the position of Show Chair. The club should not rely on the same person year after year to organize this critical activity, until that person suddenly leaves. I hope that one or two other club members could take on this role once or twice in order to provide a reliable backup team in case of an unforeseen disaster.

The Show Chair is a single point of contact for the show, can delegate tasks to the team, and makes sure the work stays on track. In my opinion, a person who already has experience managing a small team or who has some project management background will do well. For anyone who wants to learn these skills, it is a great opportunity. I look forward to mentoring anyone who is interested. The Executive Committee appoints the Show Chair after the Annual General Meeting in April.

Also, everyone, please consider volunteering for some sort of task at the show, whether it is helping to advertise, for setup/takedown, or for a two-hour shift at one of the booths. I think they are all enjoyable experiences, and the time passes quickly. Of course, you would still find plenty of time to take in the show and shop.

Dear OLMC members,

The Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre specializes in physical rehabilitation for people who have suffered traumas, strokes, been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Cerebral Palsy, ALS, Spinal Cord Diseases and also those with amputations, to name a few.

Every month people are diagnosed with a disease or suffer an unexpected trauma/illness and are not prepared for the dramatic change in lifestyle they are faced with. Many are unable to return to work, resulting in financial hardship. The Volunteers of the Rehabilitation Centre recognized the need for financial help for their medical devices and daily living aids, as well as in-hospital therapeutic programs designed to assist patients learning to live with these aids, and have been helping Rehabilitation Centre patients since. Last year TRCVA gave grants totaling nearly $46,000 to patients with medical needs.

The Rehabilitation Centre Volunteers Association (TRCVA) is holding their 19th Annual Spring into Motion Auction & Dinner on May 10th, 2018 at the St. Elias Centre in Ottawa. This is their biggest fundraiser of the year and proceeds from the event are used to help the Rehabilitation Centre patients.

Many medical devices are not covered by OHIP. To outfit a bathroom with over-the-toilet commode, bath bars, bath bench, and hand held shower can cost up to $700.00. A leg brace can cost between $250.00 and $5,000.00. Wheelchair costs range from $1,500.00(manual) to $10,000.00(power) and specialty bed up to $7,500.00. Prosthetic Devices may cost a minimum of $15,000.00 within the first 18 months of amputation. Imagine if you did not have insurance or the financial means to pay for these!

TRCVA is making a call for donations from OLMC Members for our auction this year.

Any items such as: Necklaces, Pendants, Earrings, Bracelets, Anklets, Ring, etc. as well as any carved stones or gems for home display can help!

We also will accept gift certificates including those for workshop/design/fabrication course, and cash donations. Alongside your donations we would like to place your brochures and business cards to give you some business exposure.

Please contact Anna-Lise Regimbald at [email protected] for further details and to make arrangements for delivery/pick up of your donation.

The owners of La Fibule (www.lafibule-inc.com) have offered to visit the workshop and provide a design/fabrication course on a weekend, free of charge if the club can provide accommodation.

Would anyone be interested? Let us know, and we can explore further what would be feasible, OLMC Executive (see our e-mails at page 9) or to any Workshop Supervisor
