CHAPTERI

FOREST AREA

The forest area under the Administrative charge of ForestDepartment is11309.4754 km2 at the close of the year 2011-2012and forms 29.10% of the total geographical area of Kerala state(38863 km2).

Distribution of forest area according to Legal Status is givenin Table 1.1.

Reserve Forest:

The forest reserved under Section 19 of Kerala Forest Act andincludes forest notified under Section 4 of said act.

Vested Forest:

Any forest vested in government under Section 3 of the KeralaPrivate Forest(Vesting & Assignment) Act, 1971.

EFL:

Ecologically Fragile Land means any portion of land held by

any person and lying contiguous or encircled by a reserve forest orvested forest or any other forest land owned by the Government andpredominantly supporting natural vegetation; and any land declaredto be EFL by the Government by notification in the official Gazetteunder Section 4 of Kerala Forest Act.

Forest Cover:

The forest cover in the state based on interpretation of

satellite data of February 2009 is 17300 km2which is 44.52% of thestate geographical area. In terms of forest canopy density classes,the state has 1442 km2area under very dense forest, 9394 km2areaunder moderately dense forest and 6464 km2 area under openforest. District wise forest cover in different canopy density classesare given in Table 1.11.

Plantations under Kerala Forest Development Corporation(KFDC):

A State owned public sector undertaking was set up on24.01.1975 as an off-shoot of the Forest Department pursuant to therecommendations of the National Agricultural Commissions report1972 to mobilize institutional finance to establish large scale forestplantations over 80000 ha for the development and establishment ofwood based industries in the State.
