About Thiruvananthapuram

Thiruvananthapuram or Trivandrum is the capital of Kerala and also the third largest city.Located in the south-western tip of peninsular India, Thiruvananthapuram is bordered byArabian Sea in the west and Western Ghats in the east. Thiruvananthapuram city, situated at an average elevation of 6 meters above sea level, is theadministrative headquarters of Thiruvananthapuram District. Located on the banks ofKaramana and Killi Rivers, it is categorised under Seismic Zone III by the Geological Survey ofIndia.History of ThiruvananthapuramThiruvananthapuram got its name from the deity Lord Anantha or Shesha of SriPadmanabhaswamy Temple of 7th AD, on which Lord Padmanabhaswamy (Vishnu) is seen tobe in a reclining pose. As per historical records, Thiruvananthapuram was a famous port cityduring 1050 BC and it maintained trade relations with the Middle East and Mediterraneancountries. The earliest known rulers of the region were the Tamil Kings called Yadavas or Ays, who ruledfrom 3 AD to 10 AD. Later, it came under the Venad Empire. The region prospered in 1745under King Marthanda Varma, who formed the princely state of Travancore and madeThiruvananthapuram its capital.Thiruvananthapuram was submitted to Lord Padmanabhaswamy, the presiding deity of SriPadmanabhaswamy Temple, and the Rajas of Travancore thence ruled the region on behalfof Lord Padmanabhaswamy as ‘Padmanabhadasas'.People & Culture of ThiruvananthapuramThiruvananthapuram rose to become the centre of arts, culture and intellect in the 19th centuryduring the rule of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal (1813 – 1846) and Maharaja Ayilyam Thirunal(1832 – 1880) of Travancore. It played an active role in the struggle for Indian Independence.Post-Independence, it merged with the Indian Union. The city became the capital of the state ofKerala in 1956. The economy of the city is driven by IT, medical/bio-technology and medical tourism.Malayalam, Tamil, English and Hindi are the main languages spoken in this region. The majorevents in the city are Onam, Attukal Pongala, Aaraat of Padmanabhaswamy Temple, Vishu,Vettucaud Perunaal, etc. Attukal Pongala is an annual festival which, is held at the Attukal Temple inThiruvananthapuram every year. The festival is held for 10 days with the ninth day being themost important. It marks the largest gathering of women in the world, for which it holds aGuinness World Record, where boiled rice is offered to the goddess in earthen pots. Thepresiding deity of the Attukal Temple is Attukal Bhagavathy who is an incarnation of Shakti andthe temple is often considered to be the Sabarimala of women. Another major tourist attractionin Thiruvananthapuram is the Kadammanitta Padayani Festival. The performances are a must-see for all tourists visiting Thiruvananthapuram in April.

After we visited Napier museum nice museum it was, There is a beautiful walkwayaround the museum and Well maintained museum, nice walk around, nice mural paintings.Thiruvananthapuram zoo it is also a nice zoo there is lot of animals I have never seen in others. It is a nice place for beautiful and romantic trips." - Ravi Kumar, Eluru, 4 days ago

Every thing you want to know about the city"I recently came back from a trip to Trivandrum and Kanyakumari. The city has a tropical climateand so is hot and humid throughout. The rains can be a dampener if you visit during themonsoon. The roads are relatively clean and there is lot of greenery everywhere. The city is notso modern and sports a traditional look. A lot of shopping places and a vibrant atmosphereprevails.

Getting around :- It is a lot easy and the auto drivers generally are helpful, friendly and rates are reasonable. (Thisis very much different to what I experience daily in Bangalore). But still do ask them and fix aprice before you board. The local KSRTC buses though are plentifully available are hard toidentify and the destinations are almost always displayed in Malayalam only.

Getting In:-Trivandrum Jn and Kochuveli are the 2 main railway stations in the city and trains connectTrivandrum to most parts of India. Lot of state transport and private Volvo buses are availablefrom nearby cities. Trivandrum airport is located close to city (about 20 minutes by car/auto fromthe city centre) unlike many other cities.

Too see:-Kovalam beach, Padmanabhaswamy temple, Zoo, museum, Veli tourist village andshankumugham beach are some of the important places to visit while you are in the city. Mostof the attractions are all located well within the city and close to each other, except the Kovalambeach. KTDC has package tours a half a day sight seeing for some 300 per head. Butpersonally I feel it is not required as most attractions are nearby and autos can help you.

Tips:-Always, book your hotel in advance if travelling with family and I did a mistake of not doing so.Once I reached there, I could not find accommodation in some good hotels that I had short-listed and then had to settle in a shabby lodge where there was no decent eatery near by.

Avoid visiting the city when monsoon is at its peak, the roads gets clogged and is difficult tomove around.

At the zoo, take the service of the battery operated vehicle at 50 rupees per head, the best wayto see around within a short time and the driver cum guide (Subin) was very good and helpful.

Do not miss the museum as we find some old artefacts, history of kings, different tribes inKerala, Kings chariot and so on, but what I liked the most was the model of the famousGuruvayur temple carved in wood. Simply amazing !!

The temple has strict dress code and we need to leave almost all our belongings in the cloakroom and it is a chaotic process. So be prepared for the same. The best approach would be toplan the temple as a stand alone itinerary and leave all your belongings in your hotel or have

Page 4/14

someone in your group retain all your belongings while the rest visit the temple.

Food :- During my short stay I enjoyed the food at Hotel Annapoorna, a vegetarian eatery located closeto the temple and the East Fort bus stand. I have seen some good reviews about the Indiacoffee house located opposite the railway station, but could not go there owing to lack of timeand bad weather. A lot of road side eateries are present, they smell good and tasty, but not surehow hygienic they are and personally I would not risk having any food at such places being atourist.

Overall a nice old clean city with some good attractions and relatively good local people." -Saty, Bangalore, Aug 31, 2014

Thiruvananthapuram - truly the capital of God's own country!"When we booked our flight tickets to Thiruvananthapuram, enroute to Poovar, it was simplybecause it was the nearest city to which flights were available. We had a day in hand, due toticket availability problems, and while my husband just wanted to catch up on some muchneeded sleep, all I wanted to see was the Padmanabhaswamy Temple. Our expectations fromthe city weren't too great, which is probably why the city was a real surprise to us.

Our first view of the city was from the air, a stunning melange of the clear blue of the sea, thelight brown of the sand, and the bright green of the palm trees, extending as far as our eyescould see. Add this to the simple beauty of the airport itself, built in the traditional Kerala style, and I was happy to have arrived.

The city itself was a wonderful fusion of the old and the new, with most of the city still retainingthe original Kerala architecture, with quite a bit of greenery around every house, while themodernity is very visible too, with numerous residential complexes coming up, especially in thesuburbs.

But what I shall forever remember about this city is the sight of women driving autos andrunning petrol pumps all by themselves. Truly liberation of women from the usual sterotypes!!!

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: The main attraction of the town, is of course, thePadmanabhaswamy temple - where Vishnu reclines on Adishesha (also known as Anantha),with Brahma seated on a lotus (Padma), emerging from his nave (nabha). The name,'Thiruvananthapuram' itself means 'The Abode of Anantha', also known as Adishesha. Thistemple belongs to the royal family of Travancore, who still play a major part in the templeactivities. It is a beautiful temple, built in the Tamil style, with a beautiful gopuram. The temple itself ishuge, with beautiful sculptures all around. NOTE: Men are allowed into the temple only with dhotis. Pants/shorts are not allowed. Forwomen, only sarees or skirts(full skirts, pavadas) are allowed, salwar kameez not allowed.

Page 5/14

The Attukkal Bhagavathy temple is another attraction for the devout, and is known as theSabarimala of women, since it is mostly frequented by women. The main deity is Bhagavathy orDevi,in her incarnation as Kannagi. (Kannagi is well known in southern India as the herione ofthe 'silapathigaram' a story about Kannagi and her husband, who undergo trials and tribulationsand finally are unfairly treated by the king of Madurai. When her husband is unjustly executed,Kannagi brings forth the power of her righteousness and sets fire to the whole city. She isbelieved to have passed through Kerala on her way back, and there are numerous templesaround Kerala dedicated to her. The temple is small, but beautiful, and well worth a visit.

The Museum complex, which comprises the Napier Museum, which houses beautiful sculpturesand collections of the royal family, the Sri Chitra art gallery, which have some beautiful works ofart, including paintings of Raja Ravi Varma, and the zoo, is a must-visit. More about theselater....

Activities & things to do: You can set aside a day just for the Museum complex. Whether youare an art lover, or just like to see beautiful things, or if you have kids and have to keep themengaged, this is the place for you.

We were enchanted the minute we entered the complex, when the sounds of the traffic werereplaced by birdsong, and my son was thrilled by the sight of kingfishers and babblers flyingabout happily. There is a huge garden/park, where you can lounge around for ages withoutanyone disturbing you. The place is large enough for you to remain at peace even in thecrowded holiday season. Children can run around without being told not to walk on the grass.

The zoo, especially, is great for kids, one of the better ones in India. The animals are not incages, but in huge enclosures separated by moats. My son loved his fist sight of ostriches, zebras and giraffes, while being thrilled by the lions, leopards and the huge variety and numberof deer.

The bird section and the snake house are disappointments, and can be ignored, but even then,be prepared to spend half a day in the zoo itself!

The memory that I shall carry of the zoo is the sight of hundreds and hundreds of bats all overthe trees, making a noise like nothing I have heard before. This was the first time I realised thatbats could be seen in the day, and it was just great!!!!!

The Museum complex is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9AM to 6PM. It is closed onMondays.

There are lots of other places to visit around Thiruvananthapuram.

Foremost among these, and also the most popular is Kovalam Beach, about 15 Kms away, probably the most famous in Kerala, and with due reason. The beach is not just beautiful, it isalso among the safest, with life guards all over the place. While we amused ourselves making

Page 6/14

sand castles and playing in the water, there are also other things to do. There are lots ofboatmen who take you to see corals and coloured fishes. While we did not have time to take upthe boatman's offer, it is something that must be tried out!

Another interesting beach is Shanghumugham Beach, just on the outskirts of Trivandrum. Lessknown than the other beaches around, this beach is a wonderful attraction with its white sands.

The Padmanabhapuram Palace, the seat of the Travancore Empire and the home of its royaltyis about 55 Kms from Thiruvananthapuram, and is known for its beauty and rare articlespreserved in it.

These are by no means the only places to visit around Thiruvananthapuram. As the capital ofKerala, it is very well connected by road, rail and air to all parts of the state, and there are lots ofother interesting places to visit.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Thiruvananthapuram is well connected by road, rail as well as air to all parts of the country. As to accommodation, there are plenty of options allover the city, to fit all budgets.

If you plan to visit temples in Thiruvananthapuram, or anywhere in Kerala, carry suitableclothes. Men are not allowed to wear pants, and have to only wear Dhotis. Shorts are notallowed even under the dhotis, so beware of the guards at the entrance trained to see what youare wearing!!!!Women can wear sarees or long skirts, but salwar kameez are not allowed.Only small-sized purses are allowed inside the temple, so it is better to leave your mobile andcameras at home. However, the good news is that, if you are caught unprepared, there are cloak rooms to keepyour valuables, and even dhotis on hire are available. So, go ahead, and enjoy a vacation in the capital of God's own country!!!" - Anu, Mumbai, Jun5, 2009

East Fort & Chalai - the commercial essence of this town"East Fort, the old quarter of Trivandrum was the seat of the kings. Chalai is the busy marketthoroughfare, once the commercial centre of the city and still one of its main marketplaces.Place retains the old, 'oriental bazaar' atmosphere.

Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Wander around this area just after sundown and absorb abewildering array of activities - from a group of blind singers belting out malayalam movienumbers over a pa system to a bunch of pentecostal preachers rousing the flock with 'fire &brimstone' sermons. Also, if you are a hard-core non-vegetarian with the ability to subsumehygiene considerations for the best chicken in the world, make a beeline for 'Hotel Rehmainya',a 100 sq feet wonder. Established over 60 years ago, Rehmainya purveys its special brand ofmelt-in-the-mouth chicken in a unique style.
