POST SECONDARY ENROLLMENT OPTIONS ACT

(PSEO)

Post-secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO) * Permission to Enroll forms are required for each student * Local district pays a maximum of $250 per class. Additional cost will be paid by parents including tuition and books during each fall and spring semester enrolled. * Student earns dual credit (high school and college credit) * If the student fails the class, the tuition will be paid by the parents. The Post Secondary Enrollment Options Act provides an opportunity for assisting local school districts in expanding opportunities for capable students. The act was enacted in 1987 to promote rigorous academic pursuits and to provide a wider variety of options to high school students by enabling eleventh and twelfth grade students to enroll part time in nonsectarian courses in eligible post secondary institutions of higher learning in Iowa. Ninth and tenth grade students who have been identified as Talented and Gifted and any eleventh and twelfth grade students enrolled in public school districts can enroll in approved university, college or area college courses and receive credit that may be applied toward high school graduation.

Students are encouraged to take the national A.P. test which can earn them college credits.

AP Calculus Gr. 11-12 Elective Prereq. – PreCalculus & Discrete Mathematics AP Calculus is designed to be the equivalent of a college Calculus I course (but covers some Calculus II material as well). The course can be divided into three broad areas that include limits, derivatives, and integrals. A focus is placed on preparing the student for college mathematics courses. Students are encouraged to earn college credit by taking the national AP exam upon completion of the course. It is encouraged that students take AP Calculus the semester directly following the semester they complete Pre-calculus. AP Biology Gr. 11-12 Elective Prereq. – Advanced Biology AP Biology is designed to be the equivalent of a college introductory biology course usually taken by biology majors their first year of college. The course can be divided into three broad areas that include molecules and cells, heredity and evolution, and organisms and populations. A focus is placed on preparing the student for college science classes including taking notes from lecture and producing well-written lab reports. Students are encouraged to earn college credit by taking the national AP exam upon completion of the course. It is recommended that students have previously taken (or are currently taking) Human Anatomy and Physiology. AP Chemistry Gr. 11-12 Elective AP Chemistry is a course set up to give student’s opportunity to experience college level curriculum while still in high school. The curriculum is established by the College Board who writes and evaluates the national AP tests. The curriculum includes the following topics: Atomic Structure, Bonding, Stiochiometry, Gases, Phase Changes, Thermodynamics, Solutions, Equilibrium, Acids and Bases, Kinetics, Oxidation/Reduction, Electrochemistry, Nuclear Decay, Organic Chemistry and Descriptive Chemistry. The style of class will depend on the student’s interest in being fully prepared for taking the AP Chemistry exam in May.
