Kentucky stateUniversity hasgrown and evolvedto become thestate’s unique,small liberalstudies institution,serving studentswithout regard totheir race, age, sex,national origin, oreconomic status.

the Universitywas chartered inmay 1886 as thestate normal school for Colored persons,only the second state-supported institutionof higher learning in Kentucky. During theeuphoria of Frankfort’s 1886 centennialcelebration, when vivid recollections of theCivil War remained, the city’s 4,000residents were keenly interested in havingthe new institution located in Frankfort.toward that end, the city donated $1500, aconsiderable amount in 1886 dollars, and asite on a scenic bluff overlooking the town.this united display of communityenthusiasm and commitment won the day.the new college was located in Frankfortin spite of competition from several othercities.

recitation Hall (now Jackson Hall), thecollege’s first building, was erected in1887. the new school opened on october11, 1887 with three teachers, 55 students,and John H. Jackson as president.

in 1890, KsU became a land grantcollege, and the departments of homeeconomics, agriculture and mechanics

were added to theschool’scurriculum. theschool producedits first graduatingclass of fivestudents in thespring of that year.a high school wasorganized in 1893.this expansioncontinued into the20th Century inboth name andprogram. in 1902,

the name was changed to Kentuckynormal and industrial College for Coloredpersons. the name was changed again in1926 to Kentucky state industrial Collegefor Colored persons. in the early 1930’s,the high school was discontinued, and in1938 the school was named the Kentuckystate College for negroes. the term “fornegroes” was dropped in 1952. Kentuckystate College became a university in 1972,and in 1973 the first graduate studentsenrolled in its school of public affairs.

over the past 30 years, more than 30new structures or major buildingexpansions have enhanced Kentucky stateUniversity’s 511-acre campus, whichincludes a 203-acre agricultural researchfarm.

Kentucky state University is thesmallest of Kentucky’s public universitieswith an enrollment of approximately 2,700students and 155 full-time instructionalfaculty members.

mcCutchen is the director of the Kentucky stateUniversity Concert Choir and director of Choralactivities at Kentucky state. previously, mcCutchenhas taught music theory and jazz piano at st. olafCollege in northfield, minnesota, directed the vocaljazz ensembles at the University of minnesota, as wellas served as director of the african american Choralensemble at indiana University, Bloomington. Whileat indiana University, mcCutchen received hisdoctorate in choral conducting from the Jacobs schoolof music. He received his undergraduate in musiceducation with an emphasis in choral conducting andpiano from the University of Kentucky. prior toteaching at the collegiate level, mcCutchen taught inthe Fayette County school system in lexington,Kentucky, teaching arts and Humanities at tatesCreek middle school and chorus at Henry Clay Highschool and school for the performing arts (sCapa) oflexington.

While at st. olaf, mcCutchen toured with the st.olaf choir. His arrangement of Amazing Grace wasrecorded on the st. olaf Choir Great Hymns of FaithCD, Vol. 18 and was also performed at the WorldChoir symposium, held in seoul south Korea.mcCutchen’s arrangement of Ol’ Time Religion/Whenthe Saints Go Marching In, was recorded by theamerican spiritual ensemble, everett mcCorvey,director. as a conductor, pianist and composer,mcCutchen premiered his Jazz Vespers for Chorus,Soloist, Orchestra and Jazz Quintet in Curitiba, Brazil in2013. in the fall of 2014, the Des moines Communityorchestra commissioned and premiered mcCutchen’sWe Shall Lift Every Voice and Sing: A Historical Narrativefor Chorus and Orchestra, to commemorate the 50thanniversary of the Civil rights act. most recently, inthe summer of 2016, he served as guest conductor,pianist and composer with the Guri santa marcelinaYouth Choir and tom Jobim Big Band in sao paulo,Brazil. He has performed and lectured with nea Jazzmasters, composer, David Baker, bassist, richardDavis, and publisher, educator, Jamey aebersold. Heperforms regularly with his jazz trio and quintet.

the Kentucky state University ConcertChoir begins its 51st year under thedirection of Dr. Keith mcCutchen.mcCutchen comes to the choir, followingthe 50-year legacy of former director, Dr.Carl smith, programming diverse concertsthat reflect all genres of choral music.Composed of undergraduates from allacademic areas of the university, theconcert choir is a well-rounded, diverseorganization that upholds the higheststandards in performance, as well asacademics. the choir has appeared inseveral major cities throughout the Unitedstates and has also performed in foreigncountries, including montreal, toronto,and nassau, Bahamas.

in addition, the choir is a frequent guestperformer for the Frankfort and Kentuckycommunities, university functions and thestate government. a choral documentarywas filmed and featured on Germantelevision in the 1980’s. the choir hasperformed for the regional and nationalamerican Choral Directors associationconventions. the choir was first placewinner at several choral competitionsincluding the national spiritualCompetition held at music hall inCincinnati, ohio and a two time winner ofthe annual Historically Black Colleges andUniversities Choral Festival, held in lasVegas, nevada.
