WelcomeA message from the Chair of the Kent Law Campaign
“Fantastic news”
And why is this fantastic news? Because, we have reached almost two thirds ofour Campaign target and so we can – and will – now go very LOUD indeed inorder to raise the remaining funds to make the new Law Clinic and Moot Courta reality.
Firstly, a high decibel “thank you” to everybody whose contributions arerecorded in the pages that follow; and most especially to:• Our numerous and generous donors, and particularly, of course our twomajor benefactors, The Hon Charles Wigoder and Dr Kennedy Wong;
• The Kent Law School’s amazing students for their award-winning effortson behalf of the Campaign;
• The University for its commitment to match pound for pound everythingthat we are able to raise;
• Our Patrons and my fellow Campaign Board members;• Staff from the Kent Law Clinic and the Kent Law School• Hilary Edridge and Anna Pollard from the Development Office, whoseunflagging optimism has kept our spirits up, when (just occasionally) wewondered whether it would really be possible to raise the philanthropicfunds we required.
Secondly though, an even more ear-splitting message to all of you who have notyet supported the Campaign, perhaps because you were, very understandably,waiting to see whether it really could succeed. Rest assured; it certainly will. So, hold back no longer! Please pledge or donate now by visiting the Campaignwebsite www.kent.ac.uk/lawcampaign. If that’s not possible, then at the veryleast, please join us at one of the Campaign events which we are planning tohold over the course of the next twelve months.
These will start with the Kent Law Campaign Public Launch on Wednesday6th November, 2013 in London at The Gherkin; will include a CanterburyLegal Walk in June, 2014 and will extend, and become part of, thecelebrations which the University is planning to mark its 50th Anniversary.
Thank you for your generosity, your continued support and for being part of thecommunity which continues to improve the University of Kent.

OverviewThe Kent Law Campaign, a £5millionfundraising project to build a new home forthe Kent Law Clinic and the Law School’sMooting Programme, is preparing to leavethe Quiet Phase of the campaign cycle andmove into the very exciting Public Phase.The Quiet Phase provided us with anopportunity to complete our plans, build astrong Kent Law School alumni communityand test potential donors’ receptiveness tosupporting the Law School’s goals. In anycapital campaign it is traditional to securehalf the funds required before the publiclaunch, so this initial work with alumni andfriends was crucial in securing ‘leadershipgifts’ and pledges. We are now pleased to
announce that we have exceeded the firstphase target of £2.5million and are planningto move into the next phase of theCampaign in the autumn.
FundraisingDuring the Quiet Phase of the Campaign,we have raised £3.3million (including GiftAid and the University’s match) throughgenerous gifts from our alumni, staff, friendsof the University, Trusts and Foundations,companies and our students. We would liketo thank everybody who has donated to theCampaign to date, your support really ishelping to bring our vision to reality.

Officer at the University) took part in askydive and as a team raised in excess of£3,000. Hannah Bignell (K10) swam theequivalent of the English Channel over 10days in a local swimming pool raising£1,500 and a team of 16 alumni, students,staff and friends took part in the ThreePeaks Challenge, a gruelling trek to climbthe three highest mountains in Scotland,England in Wales within 24 hours and raisedthe magnificent sum of £8,350. Other eventsincluded the Thames Path Challenge (a50km walk along the River Thames), the 30Day Challenge (giving up alcohol!) and asponsored walk from Canterbury toWhitstable.
Of her challenge, Hannah Bignell said: “Iwas the Chair of the Kent Law CampaignStudent Committee 2012/13 and decided toleave the University with a splash byswimming 22 miles in the local pool over aperiod of 10 days; this is equivalent to thewidth of the English Channel. The challengewas extremely tiring and I found it incrediblytough at times but I just knew that I had tokeep on swimming to achieve my personaland fundraising goals. The Law Campaignpresents amazing opportunities that will
benefit everyone who gets involved;students, colleagues and the community.The Clinic is an asset, not only to theUniversity of Kent, but to society and it givesstudents first-hand experiences of what lawis like in reality. The mooting programmeallows individuals to develop and enhancetheir advocacy skills. The result of thisproject will allow these invaluableexperiences to expand and grow and I feelhonoured to have been a part of it.”
