What is Kent International Pathways?Our courses are designed especially forinternational students whose first language may,or may not, be English and are intended to developboth your academic and linguistic ability in orderto fully prepare you for future study.

Our range of pathway programmes are deliveredacross our main Canterbury campus, with aprogramme running at our Brussels centre, aswell as our locations in Hong Kong and Turkey.

If you need to extend your existingacademic qualifications, study skillsor ability in English for direct entryto an undergraduate degree at a UKuniversity, why not apply for theone-year International FoundationProgramme at the University of Kent?

The International Foundation Programme (IFP) at theUniversity of Kent was one of the first to be offeredby a British university and has been in existence forover 25 years. The programme has been specificallydesigned to prepare you for academic study on awide range of undergraduate degree programmesin the humanities, social sciences and sciences,including pathways to architecture, biosciences,business and management, chemistry, computing,economics, electronic engineering, forensic science,law, pharmacology and physiology, physics,psychology, and sport and exercise sciences.

Students on the IFP are full members of theUniversity with access to all our leisure, support andstudy facilities on campus. We also offer you a placein our purpose-built student accommodation.

On successful completion of the IFP (and throughmeeting the University’s rules of progression andEnglish language requirements), you are guaranteedentry on to a full undergraduate degree at theUniversity of Kent. You will also qualify for a10% loyalty discount on the fees for your degreeprogramme.

Course structureThe IFP is a modular course taught over three terms,starting in September or January. All students takeone module in Academic Skills Development andeither take a module in English for Academic Studyor complete a Project. These classes differ from‘English language’ classes as you will be workingto develop skills to fully enjoy your academicexperience in the UK. These include, for example,developing your sense of responsibility inseminar/group work and as an independent student,improving your skills in time management, projectmanagement and individual responsibility towardslearning, and developing your analytical and criticalskills. You then choose up to three other subjectmodules depending on your chosen pathway.

AssessmentAssessment is through a combination ofassignments, coursework and examinations.

Entry requirementsTo gain entry on to the IFP you need the following:• a good academic school-leaving certificate with

particular strengths in subjects that are relevantto your intended area of study

• GCSE grade C Maths or equivalent, for somedegree programmes. If you do not have thislevel of qualification, you will need to take theIFP Maths and Statistics module

• 5.0 IELTS, with no less than 5.0 in each section.

In addition, for applicants wishing to pursue the IFPleading to Architecture or Fine Art, a portfolio of workis required. After you have made your application, wewill contact you with details on how to submit yourportfolio.

Entry requirementsTo gain entry on to the Graduate Diplomas, you need the following:• equivalent of an honours degree from a UK or

other approved university in a related subject,or an equivalent professional qualification.Consideration will be given to applicants holdingequivalent qualifications or work experience.Prospective candidates for certain GraduateDiplomas must be holders of a primary degreerelating to a relevant discipline, eg, Politics andPsychology. However, as we deal withapplications on a case-by-case basis, exceptionscan be made which take into consideration yourindividual circumstances, prior qualifications,

Who is this course for?The Graduate Diploma qualification is for internationalstudents who may not qualify for direct entry on to aMaster’s degree programme for a number of reasons.It is important to note that we take a variety of factorsinto consideration when assessing your application,so the basic requirements outlined here are aguideline only. The typical candidate profile variesdepending on the Graduate Diploma applied for, butall applicants need to indicate that they have a strongcommitment to academic study and an appropriatelevel of English.

About the Graduate DiplomaThis programme offers you the opportunity todevelop your independent study and research skillsthrough a combination of academic subject andEnglish for Specific Academic Purposes modulesacross a number of disciplines in the sciences andsocial sciences. The Diplomas are jointly deliveredby the University of Kent’s top-ranking academicschools and Kent International Pathways. Onsuccessful completion of the Diploma, and throughmeeting the University’s rules of progression, youmay choose from a number of postgraduateprogrammes offered at the University of Kent.

At the beginning of the course, you are providedwith an opportunity to discuss your module choiceswith both the International Pathways Manager and alecturer from your chosen academic discipline. Youare provided with one-to-one advice and guidanceto ensure that a bespoke timetable is created whichmeets your individual academic and linguistic needs.On successful completion of the programme, andthrough meeting the University’s rules of progressionand English language requirements, you areguaranteed entry to a full Master’s degreeprogramme at the University of Kent.

PRE-SESSIONALCOURSES/ENGLISH FORACADEMIC PURPOSES The University of Kent offers speciallydesigned pre-sessional courses toprepare international students,who do not have English as a firstlanguage, for academic study.

These courses focus on developing your Englishlanguage and study skills so you can meet the levelof proficiency required for your chosen programmeof study. If you complete one of our Pre-sessionalCourses, and achieve a final grade which meetsyour condition of entry, you will not need to takeanother Secure English Language Test (SELT)such as IELTS.

Students on a Pre-sessional Course are fullmembers of the University with access to all ourleisure, support and study facilities on campus. Wealso offer you a place in our purpose-built studentaccommodation.

Course structureKent offers a series of Pre-sessional Coursesthroughout the academic year. These course rangefrom five to 37 weeks and are designed to take youfrom your current level of English up to the levelrequired for your chosen programme of study. Whichcourse you take depends on your current level ofEnglish and the level required by your future courseof study.

There are a number of Pre-sessional Coursesdelivered at our campus in Canterbury and ourBrussels centre. • 37 weeks beginning the October before you start

your degree programme• 8 weeks beginning the October before you start

the January International Foundation Programme • 28 weeks beginning in January • 17 weeks beginning in May • 10 weeks beginning in June • Six weeks beginning in July • Five weeks beginning in August.

Course aimsAt a UK university, you are expected to workindependently, lead seminars and give presentations.To help you do this, our Pre-sessional Courses:• introduce you to the UK university learning style

and academic culture• improve your grammar and further develop your

vocabulary • expand your critical thinking skills, particularly in

academic reading and writing• develop your ability to read academic texts, listen

to lectures, participate in seminars and deliverpresentations.

TeachingKent International Pathways at the University of Kentadministers the Courses, providing an intensive, full-time course of study with approximately 20 hoursof classes per week. Teaching includes lectures,seminars, workshops, independent research tasks,and group and pair work.

JUNIOR YEAR ABROAD(JYA) ENGLISH PLUS

JYA English PLUS has been designed to meet the needs of studentswhose first language is not English.

AssessmentAssessment at the end of the Pre-sessional isthrough a combination of coursework and the KentInternational Test of English (KITE). Assessmentat the end of the whole programme will dependon the modules you have taken.

The programme consists of three parts: 1 British and Academic Culture2 Pre-sessional3 Kent Academic Term(s).

British and Academic Culture is designed to helpyou become accustomed to your new study andlearning environment. This is followed by the Pre-sessional Course that develops your language andstudy skills required for UK academic study. In KentAcademic Terms, you study a series of academicmodules offered by a range of academic schoolsacross the University of Kent.

The programme is offered in two different formats:either a full year (from April to April) or part year (fromApril to December). At the end of the Pre-sessionalCourse, you are assessed on your language skills.This helps to determine which modules you shouldfollow from September onwards.

Full-year programmeThe schedule for the full-year programme is:• Mid-April: two weeks of British and Academic

Culture• May to late August: 17 weeks of Pre-sessional• Mid-September: general and academic

orientation along with other Kent undergraduatestudents

• Late September to mid-December: first termof academic study

• Mid-December to mid-January: winter break• Mid-January to early April: second term

of academic study• Early April: programme completed.

From September, students select two modules(worth 30 credits) in English language. Most ofour students also choose 90 credits of academicmodules from those offered at Stage 1. If this levelof study is too advanced, we offer foundationmodules in history, literature, politics, sociology,philosophy, business management and economics.

Please note: for advanced students the Englishlanguage modules are optional – you can choose120 credits from those offered at Stage 1 or 2.

Part-year programmeThe schedule for the part-year programme is:• Mid-April: two weeks of British and Academic

Culture• May to late August: 17 weeks of Pre-sessional• Mid-September: general and academic

orientation along with other Kent undergraduatestudents

• Late September to Mid-December: one termof academic study

Most of our students also choose 45 credits ofacademic modules from those offered at Stage 1.If this level of study is too advanced, we offerfoundation modules in history, literature, politics,sociology, philosophy, business managementand economics.

ACCOMMODATION

Our University accommodation allowsyou to make an easy transition toliving in the UK. You don’t have toworry about finding somewhere to liveand all of your basic bills, except for aTV licence, are included in the rent.

Our Canterbury campus houses over 5,000students. Rooms are in flats, houses or colleges andare offered on a self-catered or part-catered basis.All of the bedrooms are single occupancy and manyhave en-suite facilities. Your rent includes the costsof electricity, gas, water, personal belongingsinsurance and internet access.

Students who study on one of the Kent InternationalPathways programmes are offered Universityaccommodation for the pathway programme/course as well as the first year of their chosendegree programme.

Undergraduate self-catering optionsFor self-catering accommodation, you share a self-contained house or apartment with other students.Each has its own fully equipped kitchen, so you canchoose to cook your own food or eat out on campus.These houses or apartments are let for the entireacademic year (39 weeks), so you can stay thereduring the winter and spring vacations. Apartmentshave en-suite rooms, houses have a sharedbathroom. The rooms have access to a kitchenettewith a kettle, microwave and small fridge.

Undergraduate part-catering optionsBed and bistro accommodation is available toresidents of the main building at Keynes Collegeand Becket Court. The package includes an en-suitebedroom with breakfasts and dinners in our flagshipbistro, Dolche Vita, on weekdays and in Rutherforddining hall at weekends.

Bed and breakfast accommodation is offered inRutherford and Eliot Colleges only. Accommodationcosts include breakfast (or an allowance towards anevening meal) in Rutherford dining hall. There is awide variety of other places to eat around thecampus.

If you choose part-catered accommodation, allrooms have access to a kitchenette with a kettle,small fridge and microwave, suitable for preparinghot drinks and snacks only.

These rooms are only available during term-time;this means that your rent does not cover the winterand spring vacations. If you are here for a short-termstudy programme, shorter accommodation staysmay be possible, subject to availability.

Postgraduate shared apartmentWoolf College provides postgraduate students withpurpose-built accommodation on campus.

All rooms are single occupancy and have en-suitefacilities. Most rooms are arranged in flats for fiveto eight people with large shared kitchens. Somestudio rooms are also available, with their ownkitchen facilities.

Accommodation at Woolf College is available on afixed 51-week contract. Any postgraduates whoseacademic registration is shorter than 51 weeksshould contact the Accommodation Office beforemaking an application for further details.

If you prefer to live off-campus during your pathwaystudies, our Accommodation Office can provideinformation and advice to help you find suitableprivate accommodation.

SUPPORTIVEENVIRONMENT

There is a network of student support services where you can go for help andadvice provided through Kent International Pathways.

We also have a number of Kent InternationalPathways graduates who lead social activities.You can contact them with any questions youmay have throughout the year.

Meet people from home – Kent’s‘buddy’ schemeTo create a supportive student network, Kent hasset up email groups and a student ‘buddy’ scheme,which allows you to contact other students from yourhome country. But the support doesn’t end there;after you graduate, it’s also possible to get in touchwith Kent alumni in your own country, providing a life-long network of friends and professional contacts.

Pastoral supportOur Student Support Officer and Senior Tutor arehere to make sure you are offered the best possiblepastoral support, to enable you to make the most of your experience at Kent. You are encouraged tomeet with the support team for confidential pastoralsupport including concerns around general welfare,health and wellbeing, and personal problems.

The team can also help you to make contact withthe other support services available at the Universityincluding the Medical Centre and Pharmacy,Nursing Service, Student Support and Wellbeing,and the Chaplaincy.

Academic supportWhen you join one of our programmes, you areassigned an academic adviser for the durationof your studies. The Academic Adviser is here toprovide you with independent advice on all aspectsof your academic development, including youracademic progress and feedback on assignments.

We also offer an Academic Peer Mentor Schemewhich aims to improve learning and performancethrough pairing past pathway students with currentstudents to provide further academic peer support.
