Looking out for Very Important People

The V.I.P Project uses local volunteers to offer low- level support to people experiencing social isolation or loneliness. The volunteers engage with the community to identify and connect isolated people and help build strong relationships and increase activity levels – whether by taking part in the Trust’s activities or being referred to other local services that meet their needs.

Volunteers meet one-to-one with the participant for five sessions and build an action plan based on the participant’s needs. Previous participants have been involved in NHS health checks, weight loss sessions and physical activities such as Zumba, belly dancing and breathe and stretching sessions. They have also benefited from volunteering opportunities and workshops on nutrition and diet, heart health awareness and mental health.

After completing the course, one participant said:“(The) problem was I was overthinking and had become introverted. I was never part of any groups before, I just stayed at home. I got physically sick, but I am better now and I go out more and do a lot more walking.”

For further information on the VIP Project please contact [email protected] or call 0208 969 6300.

Independent Health Complaints AdvocacyIf something goes wrong with NHS care or treatment, you have the right to free and independent support from an Advocate to make a complaint. POhWER’s Independent Health Complaints Advocates are available to give practical one-to-one support if you need it. POhWER were able to help Peter, who got in touch with their Independent Health Complaints Advocacy Service because he was denied treatment for the removal of varicose veins and was in some distress as he was told the veins are life threatening if not removed. Advocate Linden explained POhWER’s service and how they can assist. They wrote a complaint letter together and Peter sent it to the NHS. Within 3 working days the Head of Governance called informing Peter that they will review their decision not to treat him for the removal of his varicose veins if the GP provides further information in line with their criteria. Once received, an appointment for treatment can be offered in as little as 2 to 3 working days. Peter was very happy with this.If you want to speak confidentially to an Advocate about making a complaint about a hospital, GP, dentist or any other NHS-funded service, call their Helpline on 0203 553 5960, email them at: [email protected] or visit their website at www.pohwer.net for more information and a range of self-help tools.

One-to-one psychological therapies in English, Arabic and Farsi

Caring can be challenging; you may really want to support someone, but sometimes it can feel like a difficult and upsetting experience. When you are spending a lot of time thinking about someone else and the impact of their illness, and not enough time looking after yourself, it can affect your mental health and make it harder to stay well. Accompanied with isolation, lack of sleep and feelings of frustration and guilt, the caring relationship can make you feel emotionally and physically exhausted, making it a struggle to cope with everyday demands. Most carers need some additional support. It can be really important to have someone to talk to; a family member, friend, or someone at a support group. It is also advisable to seek professional help. Talking treatments like counselling can give you a time and space to talk about your worries, address difficult feelings, and explore how looking after someone else affects you.If you are registered with a GP in Kensington & Chelsea, Queen’s Park or Paddington, contact Community Living Well for short-term one-to-one psychological therapies in English, Arabic and Farsi.E: [email protected] | T: 07715 636 626

K&C Carers ForumThe Carers Forum is an opportunity to have your voice heard and to feedback to those responsible for local services,

including your local Councillor.

The next meeting of the Carers Forum will be in October 2018 (date to be confirmed) and we’d encourage as many carers to come along and feel involved.

If you’d like any more information on the Carers Forum, do pick up the phone and speak to Service Manager Anita Doshi on 020 8960 3033 or email her on [email protected]

Would you like to become more involved? We are currently looking for a local carer to chair the meetings of the Carers Forum in RBKC.

This is a great opportunity to help local carers to have their voices heard in the borough. We will be sending out the Carer Chair role description and application form to all carers in September. At the next Forum you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the role, or you can give Anita a call.
