The month of July means many things to people…It is
the start of the second half year, “Dog Days of
Summer” begins, summer school has started for those
lucky kids, summer camps, trips to the beaches or
mountains and big outdoor celebrations.
We have many ways to celebrate these July
traditions. We are located about two hours from the
mountains, one hour to the Chesapeake bay, two
hours to the ocean, just to name a few. There are
many wonderful summer camps for the children to
enjoy, whether it is at the YMCA or a sleep away
camp at Sandy Hill in Maryland.
There are many local farmers markets to buy fresh,
local produce. Kennett Square has a wonderful
collection of local farmers and artisans that bring their
products every Friday from 2 PM to 6 PM.
Kennett Square is hosting the finale of the Chesco
Gran Prix bike race on July 13th. It is a bike race that
brings professional racers from all over the United
States and Canada. There are races held each day in
a different town: Malvern, Parkesburg, Eagle,
Phoenixville, Oxford and ending in Kennett Square.
Portions of the proceeds will benefit Alex’s Lemonade
Stand. The Merchants of Kennett Square are holding
a Sidewalk Sale on July 20th and July 21st. Please
visit them and see what wonderful merchandise lies
within our town.
July is also a wonderful month to watch Fourth of July
parades. Most are held on July 4th
. The town of
Hockessin, Delaware hosts a wonderful small town
parade that is a wonderful slice of Americana. For
more information, please see “hockessinjuly4.org.”
It is always time to remember to schedule your

Here are some fun Fourth of July facts to
celebrate our nation’s 237th
birthday.
1. 56 men originally signed the Declaration of
Independence in Independence Hall in
Philadelphia.
2. Samuel Wilson (1766-1854), a meat
distributor to the United States Army during
his life, became known as the original “Uncle
Sam.” He marked all his barrels of meat with
“US” since the meat was to become US
government property, however, soldiers
colloquially referred to the “US” labels as
Uncle Sam in reference to Samuel Wilson.
The term later became consistent with
referencing the US federal government.
3. The Liberty Bell was replaced by the
Centennial Bell in 1876 in Independence Hall
Steeple after it suffered a major crack.
4. Benjamin Franklin is featured on the $100
note, with a duplicate of a historical painting of
Independence Hall on the reverse side. The
$100 note has been the largest US currency
denomination in print since 1969, the same
year that the $500, $1000, and $10,000 notes
were retired. Historical figures Benjamin
Franklin on the $100 bill and Alexander
Hamilton on the $10 bill are the only non-
presidential figures featured on US currency.

Summer Water Safety Tips
For the Beach, Shore and Lakes:
o Check local surf conditions and tide
times. Always swim when a lifeguard is
present. Even advanced swimmers can
drown.
o Be aware and learn to recognize riptides.
If you are caught in a riptide, swim
parallel to the shoreline until you are free
from the pull of the current. Signal a
lifeguard for assistance. Do not panic!
Drowning isn’t what Hollywood portrays it to be;
especially in young children. “Fight or flight”
responses cause a rush of blood to the
extremities and can prevent a person from
shouting for help or raising their arms to signal
for assistance.
When enjoying the water by boat, always make
sure everyone has a personal floatation device.
Boat safety also requires a designated captain,
preferably one who has experience.
Dental Fact: Why are X-Rays needed and why are they good
for your overall health?
X-Rays are a form of radiation used in a
variety of healthcare environments. X-Rays
allow for a view of things that cannot be
seen during a regular clinical exam. By
delivering safe and controlled doses of
radiation, an X-Ray can provide your
dentist with valuable diagnostic
information such as: exposing hidden
dental decay, locating plaque below the
gum line, identifying bone loss, and also
reveal abscesses, cysts, and even tumors.
Our office uses a digital x-ray machine,
allowing us to utilize 80X less radiation
than the background radiation that we
receive from the sun, the environment, and
even cell phones and microwaves
Please feel free to ask one of our
hygienists at your next appointment if you
have any questions or concerns regarding
your care.
She laughs at everything you say.
Why?
Because she has fine teeth.
