Employee Services

Employees have needs and employee services describe these needs. Employee services require quite a bit of space. Their locations will affect employee efficiency and productivity. The quality of these services will affect the quality of work life.

Parking Lots

• Parking lots should be a 1:1 ratio (1 parking spot for each employee)

• Best assignment is first come first served• Must be ADA compliant

Locker Rooms

• Locker rooms give employees space to change from their street clothes to their work clothes

• The size of the locker room is directly proportional to the number of employees

• Staggered shifts could reduce congestion• The size of a locker room is found by multiplying the number of

employees by 4 square feet per employee

Restrooms• As a rule of thumb, one toilet is required for every 20 employees• Restrooms should not be further than 200 feet away from any

employee• Special accommodations and provisions must be made for

employees with disabilities as required by the ADA• The size of a restroom is 15 square feet per toilet, washbasin and

entryway and 9 square feet for urinals

Cafeterias or Lunchrooms

• Lunchrooms should provide a comfortable, pleasing environment in which to recuperate from work and eat lunch

• A lunch period starting every 10 minutes will reduce waiting time or the number of facilities required in a 30-minute lunch period

• The size of a lunchroom will depend on the number of employees, the type of service provided and the facilities included

Recreational Facilities

• Recreational facilities are becoming more important every year• Health conscious employees are better employees• A workstation layout drawing must be made for each facility• Facilities can include a gym, health club, table games etc.

Drinking Fountains• Drinking fountains should be located within 200 feet of every

employee• Each drinking fountain will include space for the drinking fountain

and the person getting a drink• 15 square feet should b allowed for each drinking fountain

Medical Facilities• When a plant reaches 500 employees, a registered nurse is usually

justified• If a plant has 3000 employees, 6 nurses would be justified and a

doctor to supervise the medical staff• Nurses require facilities such as waiting rooms, examining room,

medical supplies and record and reclining areas• One nurse would require a 400 square foot area
