Sometimes these receptor areas become overwhelmed, resulting in misdirected or confused messages, leading to poor rubbish removal, inappropriate directions and decreased efficiency of the body parts under the control of those receptors. Here is an example: several years ago, an acquaintance offered to help Dr Hart when he learned that Liz and Dr Hart were to be away from home for several weeks. He had nothing to do and was bored. So Dr Hart showed him where and how to do some simple slashing with a tractor and slasher. On returning home, the slashing had been done very well. Also, he had decided, on his own, to do extra. The result was some slashing of Liz's special plants. Well!!! Was that ever like an overactive receptor! In our body that would be like chaos in a body part and would require control to bring it back to a calm and sensible behaviour. Chiropractors will often "inhibit" these receptors by applying a steady calming pressure on these offenders. On the other hand underactive receptors may require stimulation, like a sharp tap to get their attention. Bit like a sergeant major in the army. Sometimes there will be several receptors involved; some overactive and some under active. Of course, checking the affected vertebra or other body part will usually show a vast improvement. Note that the healing has only just begun, much like the housekeepers need a little time to get all the cleaning back to scratch.

Do you have senior moments? Many of us joke about “senior moments”. You enter a room and can’t remember why. You misplace your keys. You fumble for words.

But when they start happening to you more frequently, they’re not funny at all. Sometimes it can be embarrassing; like when you’ve forgotten someone’s name. Sometimes it can be quite worrying, leaving you wondering how long you will be able to stay sharp.

How does ageing affect the brain? The ageing process can affect the brain in several ways. Changes in the structure of nerve cells over time result in the brain shrinking. The brain depends on a constant supply of oxygen and nutrient rich blood. With age there can be changes in the blood vessels within the brain as well as those that carry blood to the brain. In elderly people, the following symptoms have been associated with impaired blood flow to the brain:

• Difficulties with concentration and memory • Dizziness • Tinnitus and headaches • Confusion • Lack of energy and tiredness • Absent mindedness

What can you do to support your brain health as you age?

Genes and lifestyle influence how you age, but there are things you can do to help your brain stay as sharp and healthy as possible.

• Get adjusted. You may have noticed we are actively testing balance when we do our re-evaluations. It takes a lot of brain work for you balance standing on one leg, and even more work when we close our eyes and stand on one leg. If the chiropractor has not tested you recently, please ask us to do an update.

• Work up a sweat. One observational study followed more than 600 seniors and found those engaged in physical exercise shed the least amount of brain shrinkage over a three-year period

• Eat wisely. • Challenge yourself. Just as lifting weights strengthened your muscles, keep your mind engaged to increase the

brains vitality. Read, write, do puzzles (NO, TV does not count) • Social interaction. Especially in combination with physical activity, it engages in areas of the brain involved in

memory and attention. E.g. dancing classes may combine by catching up with friends, as well as moving.

Dr Hart likes to explain to patients how the light pressures that we use could possibly affect the problems that they are having. Here is an explanation that covers much of what we do. Receptors are like ‘middle management’ which directs the background that keeps various areas of the body healthy and ready for action. Much like good housekeeping staff. So Dr Hart showed him where and how to do some simple slashing with a tractor and slasher. On returning home, the slashing had been done very well. Also, he had decided, on his own, to do extra. What Happened in February?

Not keen on paperwork? Neither are we….but it is important to track progress. We have recently changed our forms at the office. Periodically we will ask you to answer a few questions to update your information. We want to focus on your good health and improvements, but we need to know if anything has changed. We know when people are in pain it affects their life in different ways. How do your problems change your ability or behaviour? E.g. if you have a headache you may not sleep well, may be grumpy and may have an upset stomach.

Amy did Year 10 work experience.

Many Thanks Chris, for making valentines chocolates

for us to give away. Dr Tara ate the leftovers J

Natalie pretended not to have a birthday but we had lunch anyway.

Staff Update Dr Hart

On the hottest weekend of the year, Dr Hart searched through his archives to find something to remind him of why he lives in Queensland. The first picture shows a road to his work place, when it is impossible to go anywhere, before the road is ploughed and the next day when it is possible to drive, IF you can get onto or off the road. The second picture shows a LOT of shovelling to access a driveway. That would have taken a week of furnace like weather to melt.

He listens to Dr Tracy more these days. Dr Hart is at work on Monday and Thursday.

Dr Tracy

Dr Tracy enjoys the challenge of having a student working with her. It might look “easy” when you watch us adjusting but there is a lot of brainwork going on behind all our chiropractic assessments. Dr Tracy sometimes explains learning chiropractic skills like learning to play piano. Start with ‘chopsticks’ and eventually you can play a symphony. (When it comes to piano Dr Tracy didn’t make it past “chopsticks”) Dr Tracy is working Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Saturdays

Dr Chan

Dr Chan has been enjoying the summer with a couple of local camping trips with friends, and a horse ride with her mum on the Noosa North shore. Dr Chan works Friday & Saturdays each week.

Dr Tara

Dr Tara played lots of tennis in February, in Toowoomba, and out at Brymaroo & Kulpi. She's enjoyed having friends come to stay and showing them around Toowoomba. Tara's looking forward to a busy March with Chiropractic seminars in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Dr Tara works Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturdays.

Dr Sandie

February was the start of the busy period for Dr Sandie with Hamish starting swimming lessons again and starting Rugby Tots. Dr Sandie also started silver smithing classes again and made herself a pearl ring. This month she is off to Melbourne for a weekend to do a Switched on Kids seminar. Dr Sandie works Wednesday morning, Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.

Sue

Sue has spent many hours last month updating the family tree on her mother’s side, ahead of a large family reunion in September. It took a lot of work with lots of rechecking each section, but she really enjoyed doing it. Sue also got away for a lovely weekend with some friends on the Gold Coast. Sue is very grateful to Dr Tracy and Dr Tara for putting her back together and keeping her back stable after trying to be Super Woman and juggling 5 bags of shopping, while closing the tail gate on her car. Not a good idea!

Natalie

Natalie has always believed and always promoted chiropractic care, lately her mixed bag of life has been pretty full on, so she can't emphasise enough how regular adjustments have saved her physically and mentally to sustain balance... with the New Year already near to the quarter, be sure you find your balance!!

Leiza

For Leiza, February began with many cuddles with a new granddaughter, “so darn cute makes your heart burst”. She did lots of bragging & showed everyone gorgeous little Georgie. Then Leiza came back to work to save for more visits. Big thank you to Nat & Sue covering at work for Leiza. Thanks also Chris for the Yummy chocolates for Valentines fabulous creations.

Congratulations to Dr Sandie and Tim on the

news of expectation of #2 sometime in the middle of

the year. Red Ted is pleased with all the new

babies in the office to keep him company.
