CHAPTER 1

1.1 Preface

I have background on computer science, physics and mathematics. For me, kendo is very difficult. I find that thedependency of different parts in kendo is high. For example, in order to improve a bad habit in kendo, we always needto improve several minor habits in different components. It is similar to that case that we need to go into differentclasses or files in other to fix a single bug. It is a bad programming habit. But it is a intrinsic property of kendo or anysports.

In addition, I always find that there are undefined terms in kendo such as “Tenouchi” and “ki ken tai ichi”. I know thatthey are important components for kendo but I am not crystal clear of what they really are. I find that it is similar tothe case of “inertia”. We use “inertia” to explain things but we do not know what it is.

In conclude, I hope I can improve my kendo by building this website. The things in kendo are scattered but related. This website serves as a hub to gather these components.

It is very likely that my ideas and opinions on kendo are wrong given that my time on kendo is not long. Please correctme by reaching me in email.

17Kendo Basics II: Tsugi ashi

1. Left foot move first. In other words, back foot moves first, front foot goes next.

2. Usually, front foot moves first in kendo.

3. Just gain move distance.

4. The extra distance makes a huge difference.

5. It has a disadvantage. When you move your left foot, you may get hit. Because it is difficult to response whenthe left leg (the power leg) is moving.

6. When the left foot passes the right foot, it becomes, ayumi-ashi.

Tip of the Week - Fumikomi

1. ‘fumikomi’ = ‘stamp strike’.

2. Should not lift the right leg too high

3. kendo is trying to move forward instead of upward.

4. Imagine an plane (stealth fighter) flying in a low height to avoid the radar detection.

5. The stamping is generated from the left leg as shown in 02:47

6. If you lean forward, it means you cut by the upper body and you cannot achieve Ki Ken Tai Ichi ().

An intersting exercise

1. Your partner hold you.

2. get attention to your lower body.

3. Relax your upper body

4. Imagine your right foot is a stealth fighter hiding the ground

5. Put pressure on the left leg.

6. Feel the tension on your lower abdomen

Two types approach

1. short approach and big stamping.

2. big approach and short stamping.

VIDEO

For the first video, imagine there is a person holding you from the back.

For the second video, it is same as what sumi sensai covered in the first video. The kicking hakama is not that obvious.

For the third video, the left leg of this child seems not that straight.

1. Start at a fixed line.

2. Hit the sensai’s shinai.

3. They jump at very relax manner as shown in 01:25.

1.3. Footwork 5

1.4 Suburi, Cutting

Tip of the Week - Hayasuburi

1.4.2 Text

Sueno sensei and the 45 degree myth

1. Kendo training should be a step-by-step process, based on getting each stage right before you move on to thenext.

2. To reach a good level of men suburi before attempting tobikomi (, means dive, jump, plunge) men

3. We should not bring them back to a point where he have to open our elbows, but that the swing should go backas far as it can while keeping the arms in correct cutting position.

4. Relax your arms immediately after striking men, so that the shinai could bounce upwards, allowing your forwardmotion and following zanshin to continue smoothly.

6 Chapter 1. Contents

Page 11: kendoHub Documentation · Sumi sensei lesson on kiai 1.The sound comes from the the tare position. 2.Left hand two fingers grip. Other fingers just grip. Don’t grip too much

5. There are many paths to the top of the mountain.

Big or Small?

1. Why do you tell me to cut big when you cut small?

2. tenouchi (the holding) is particularly relevant to making small waza (means techniques, skills) work

3. Kote is by definition a small technique

4. Nuki men (escrape from the opponent’s attach and hit his men) is a great example of big technique.

5. kensen = “the tip of a sword or shinai”

6. tobikomi = =”dive, jump, plunge”

7. sutemi = = “throw away the seed”

8. the cutting motion should be elliptical

9. suburi that “bringing the shinai back against your buttocks” is not the way to hit men.

10. The psychology is simple, people were relieved at having to do only 200, but as this was more than the standardset 20 or 30 they relaxed from the start, saving energy for the last few.

The following are from the comments.

1. adding a rotation (slight) with the focus in the center of the tsuka, between your hands will increase the speedof the kensen by 30%.

2. a push/pull motion between the left and right hand is also an important part of delivering the strike quickly.

3. At my age I move slowly and see slowly, so when I see an attack it looks slow and I can beat it.

4. learn good debana (You can foresee the motion of your opponent hence you can hit him before he starts hisattack.) timing and it does not matter how fast the other guy is.

5. to push the left hand forward and pull the right hand back as you raise the shinai and then push the right handforward and pull the left hand back on the strike.

Timing of one

1. the weight of the cut should be in the shinai’s monouchi and that we should aim for maximum extension usingthe shoulders, elbows, wrists and tenouchi in that order.

1.4. Suburi, Cutting 7

Page 12: kendoHub Documentation · Sumi sensei lesson on kiai 1.The sound comes from the the tare position. 2.Left hand two fingers grip. Other fingers just grip. Don’t grip too much

kendoHub Documentation, Release 1.0.1

2. His view was that 45 degrees is the natural extension angle of the shoulder joint and that if we reach back beyondthis point then we have to change our grip.

3. By keeping to the 45 degree rule we are able to lift the shinai and strike in the timing of one (ichibyoshi). If wego beyond that point, we follow a timing of two, as the movement is broken as we rearrange the positions of ourfingers on the tsuka

The following are from the comments.

1. do a lots of suburi where the shinai comes right back to touch the body before going forward.

2. I still keep the pressure with my left little finger so that the kensen does not drop below the horizontal.

3. I actually prefer the more natural horizontal to strict 45.

4. Nothing new really. Only hard to master. And then practice is often a little different form theory.

1.5 Distance

1.5.1 Text

One step too far

1. No: start outside of striking distance; take a step towards their opponent, take another step whilst raising theshinai and another one when bringing it down.

2. Yes: to step into range maintaining chudan kamae then raise and lower the shinai in a continuous movement, simultaneously taking a second step to strike the target.

3. Good start is to practice suburi, concentrating on making the up and down movement in the timing of one(ichibyoshi).

4. You can also practise men drills stepping into your own uchima distance without lowering or lifting the pointof your shinai and then raise it as you push off from the left foot and bring it sharply down on your opponent’smen as your right foot hits the floor.

1.11.1 Kendo Techniques : Basic Cutting - Men - The Kendo Show

This video demonstrates how to hit men in 3 different ways (levels). They are basic, intermediate and advance.Besides, there is an interesting advertisement in the middle of the video.

basic:

1. Start at the far distance (i.e. toma), which is a good distance. Use the suriashi footwork to approach youropponent. The left foot palm should not raise too much.

1.9. Seme Text 11

Page 16: kendoHub Documentation · Sumi sensei lesson on kiai 1.The sound comes from the the tare position. 2.Left hand two fingers grip. Other fingers just grip. Don’t grip too much

kendoHub Documentation, Release 1.0.1

2. Kiai

3. Step in to the attacking distance, which is namely as “issokuittou no maai”. It means “one step one cut distance”.

4. At the attacking distance, “raise and push the right leg” and “raise the shinai as big so that you can see youropponent (i.e. over head)(p.s. opponent refers to an imaginary opponent)”.

5. Draw the left leg and do the men strike. Pay attention to the “tenouchi” (i.e. holding). Cut to the chin.

6. Return to the Kamae.

7. Return to the attacking distance.

advertisement:

They use suriashi and wood sword to practise striking men. In details, launching right leg while raising shinai. Then, drawing left leg while dropping shinai.

The girl at 04:51 seems doing men in a different way. Her upper arm drops first. Then the lower arm drops.

The kirakashi is different from what I have learnt. The left hand is not in the middle.

At 05:26, the RHS uses the shinai pointing to his right to defence. Then hits men from his inner side. After that, itseems that he hits the kote from his outer side. Then he launches the right leg (left leg has not been moved) and hitsmen from his outer side.

immediate:

1. After arriving the attacking distance, we should not move the left leg to swing the shinai. Just launch the rightleg.

2. Use suriashi to pass through the opponent.

Then, in the demonstration.

At 08:40, the first men is same as what he has taught. At 08:44, the second men employs the “drawing left leg to swingthe shinai”. The 3rd and 4th men are same as the 2nd men.

advance:

1. Use small movement to swing the shinai.

2. From the far distance, step in.

3. As we leap forward, instead of bring the shinai over head, push from left leg, leap forward and strike with smallaction without making a huge swing.

4. Raise the shinai so that the tip is above your opponent’s head. Be aware that the shinai should not point back-ward. Must stay forward as shown at 09:51.

5. As in the large version, we still need to cut to the chin in order to make nice solid strike. When we cut, we timethe hands and feet together.

6. Carrying your body weight with your feet.

7. Moving the feet before hand.

8. Small does not mean fast.

9. The most important is “all together is one”.

Then, in the demonstration.

The 1st and 2 nd men:

Approach and stand still and does not “drawing left leg to swing the shinai”. The 3th and 4th seems to use “drawingleft leg to swing the shinai”.

1.12 Paul Shin

1.12.1 Kendo and Iaido Concepts: Omote vs. Ura

1. Omote vs. Ura

2. Which side of the shinai you should use to execute the waze.

3. Your shinai and your opponent’s shinai are usually touching on the omote side.

4. When you look down your shinai, your left side is the omote side while the right side is the ura side.

5. Omote = outside while Ura = inner

6. The blade is facing up when you wear the katana.

7. The name is written in the omote side in the middle of the holding.

8. The disadvantage of displaying the katana in omote side is that you cannot use sword easily at the emergencycondition.

9. Example of using short form in commander: kote suriage men on the omote side

I use my omote side of the shinai to block his kote strike and hit his men.

1.14.2 26-9-2016 (Mon), 0600pm-0800pm HKUST LG 4204

Welcome, it is the first extra practice in this fall semester. It will be hold by 2 senior members, namely Coleman andAnthony. Another 3 senior members, namely Nero, Star and Ryan will come to help.

The followings are the content of this extra practice.

1. The basic structure of shinai (It represents a Japanese sword).

What does the rope in the top of shinai represent?38 inch sword for ladies while 39 inch sword for gentlemen

2. Kamae

Like having a normal walk and just stop.Like having a wok () in the torso. One fist between the torso and the shinai. Why? It allows you to escape from your opponent’sattack.

3. Distances (Maai)

Three distances as stated in reference (1).1. Tma (T-ma) — long distance2. Issoku itt-no-maai (Itto-ma) — one-foot-one-sword distance also called chma — middledistance3. Chikama — short distance

4. Footwork (Ashi-sabaki)

suri-ashi (sliding footwork)imagine an A4 paper between your right foot palm and the ground.Left leg should never cross right leg.Weight distribution: 60 (right): 40 (left), 50 (right): 50 (left)

Someone will tell you to have 60% of weight on the right leg while 40% of weight on the leftleg.Someone will tell you to have 50% of weight on the right leg while 50% of weight on the leftleg. In my opinion, it depends on the situation. You should try to vary the weight distribution tofind out which one is better in the given circumstance.

5. Suburi

Swing without cutting a specific target. What is it purpose?A practice: Two Suburi swing and then One stepping footwork to move forward.

6. The basic men cut in reference (2).

It is our target in October. It is completely fine/natural that you cannot do it now.

1.14.3 29-9-2016 (Thur), 0500pm-0600pm HKUST outside LG 4204, 0600pm-0700pmHKUST LG 4204

It is the second extra practice in this semester. There should be about 10 freshmen joining this practice. We cannotbook the LG4204 for 2 hours because we submit the application late.

Hence, we will meet outside at the LG4204. Then, we will go to LG3003 for practising the footwork for the first hour. Then, we will move back to LG 4204 for the later hour.

First, recall what we have done in the last extra practice (26-9-2016) and yesterday regular practice (28-9-2016).

Reminder/Comment of the last extra practice.

1. Kamae (The upper body part)

4 things1. The arms should be relaxed. As release (c.f. hea in Canotnese) as possible.2. Positive slope and never negative slope of the shinai. The actual slope depends on the height ofyour opponent.3. One fist between the torso and the holding.4. Center line. You cannot see the center now. After you practise for a longer time, you can see thecenter line more clearly.

2. Footwork

kendoHub Documentation, Release 1.0.1

Fumikomi (Stamp)The Fumikomi Men taught by Ken senpai is as follows

1. Raise up the shinai by raising up your body a little bit.“raising up your body” refers to the motion that you want to take something at the shelf in a highposition but you cannot reach it. So you raise and extend your body to try to take it.2. At this moment, your shinai has been raised and your body has not moved yet.3. Launching your left leg to push the right leg while swinging down the shinai.

Some beginners do an advanced version. They do not do the above 1st and 2nd steps. They simply do the 3th step and try to raise the shinaiwhen they launch the left leg.It is very difficult. Some of the senior members will try to do this version as a practice. However, beginners should follow the version of Ken senpai instead of the others.

The followings are the content of this extra practice

1. Kamae

2. The five stages of footwork as covered in 29-9-2016 (Thur) extra practice.

3. okuri-ashi () with left foot at front

4. okuri-ashi with right foot at front

Same as above

5. Ayumi-ashi (A type of footwork akin to normal walking)

2 beat version, large and slowly.1st beat: push from your left leg to launch the right leg

2nd beat: Pull from the right leg and hence the leg leg cross the right leg and then use the right leg (It is atthe behind now.) to push the left leg.

6. Two people stand in the Issoku itt-no-maai.

Feel the connection between you and your partner. When one side moves forward, other moves backward to keep the distance

7. Swing the shinai with footwork

1. At the normal kamae position. (left leg follows right leg)2. Raise your shinai stationary.3. Push from the left leg (the left leg do not move) to move the right leg forward and swing down theshinai.4. Use the left leg to draw the right leg while swing up the shinai and place your right leg behind the leftleg.5. At this moment, the kamae position is reversed. (right leg follows left leg)

If you want to have the soft copy, you can find it under the session “Reference”.If there are too many people, I will print more of it and bring it next time. The book in Reference (1) is a good book. It also serves as a dictionary to understand some terminologiesin kendo.I do not suggest you to read the whole book at this stage (i.e. learning kendo for 1 month). Just flip it atyour leisure time.

1. We will first revise the footwork taught in last extra practice (6-10-2016).

okuri-ashi () with left foot at frontokuri-ashi with right foot at frontSwing the shinai with footwork

2. Frog jump

3. Explain the mechanism/basic flow of Kihon-Uchi (basic striking or cutting)

To begin with, I will explain some important terms in the footwork part.1. Fumikiri: push-off or the leap forward using the left foot when in chudan2. Fumikomi: stamp on the floor with the entire sole of the right3. Hikitsuke: the act of snapping the rear foot up.In conclude, we use fumikiri to drive off from your left foor at the Issoku itt-no-maai, moving yourright foot word as a result of shortening the distance.Perform fumikomi and strike at the same timeHikitsuke just occur after the strike and stamp (Fumikomi). Without hikitsuke the action ‘cutting’cannot be completed.(c.f. You cannot cut a bread by simply pushing down from the top. You have to slice it)The remainder is when and how to raise the shinai.1. You can raise the shinai stationary.2. You can raise the shinai when you execute the Fumikiri.3. You can move your right foot forward using the power of your left foot without lifting yourshinai. Then, raise your shinai above your head as you bring your left foot by straightening the right leg(Hikitsuke).
