Usage guide Depending on the condition of the substrate, the KEMPEROL® Fleece and the required membrane thickness: approx. 2.8-3.6 kg/m² giving a coating thickness of approx. 2.0 mm.

Application The substrate must be dry, sound and free from any material that would hinder adhesion. Before application of KEMPEROL® V 210 Waterproofing, prime using KEMPERTEC® Primer according to the priming recommendations. Apply only when substrate and ambient temperatures exceed 5 °C. During application the surface temperature must be 3 °C above the dew point. If the substrate temperature is below or at the dew point temperature then moisture can form at the surface which can affect coating adhesion and cure. (Please refer to DIN 4108 - 5 Tab.1 for a dew point graph). At temperatures of less than 10 °C, KEMPEROL® UP-A Cold Activator, and above 25 °C, KEMPEROL® UP-I Inhibitor should be added to KEMPEROL® V 210 Waterproofing component B. Mixing:Mix KEMPEROL® CP Catalyst Powder component C thoroughly into KEMPEROL® V 210 Waterproofing component A. Dissolving time: approx. 20 min. at +20 °C. Stir KEMPEROL® V 210 Waterproofing component B thoroughly until no streaks are visible and mix thoroughly in a 1:1 ratio with the KEMPEROL® V 210 Waterproofing component A+C mixture. Again, ensure that no streaks are visible. Application:Approx. 2/3 of the KEMPEROL® V 210 Waterproofing is applied to the substrate and KEMPEROL® Fleece is rolled with a perlon roller, removing air bubbles and allowing an overlap of 5 cm. Then the remaining 1/3 of the KEMPEROL® V 210 Waterproofing is poured onto the surface until complete saturation is achieved. To reduce dirt retention, after a minimum of 12 hours KEMPEROL® TP Talcum Powder can be sprinkled onto KEMPEROL® V 210 Waterproofing. Spread with a light brush and sweep off excess. Joints on door and window elements etc. with a height of < 15 cm (as a water-bearing level from the upper edge) should have at least 5 cm of overlap. Connections to the surface waterproofing should be made with at least a 10 cm overlap. The thickness of the membrane needs to meet minimum requirements defined in the European Technical Approval ETA. National regulations must be followed. Job interruptions and further coating: After more than 12 hours: Clean the surface intensively with KEMPERTEC® MEK Cleaning Agent. Alkaline protection layer::

KEMPEROL® V 210 Waterproofing has only limited alkali resistance. For long-term exposure a coat of KEMPERTEC® EP-Primer, KEMPERTEC® EP5-Primer or KEMPERTEC® AC-Primer with KEMPERTEC® NQ 0712 Natural Quartz to be sprinkled in provides suitable protection (see also Technical Information TI 15 - alkalinity). Personal protective equipment should be worn. Clean the tools immediately after use with KEMPERTEC® MEK Cleaning Agent. Clean your hands and rub KEMPER SYSTEM skin care cream into the skin.

Mixing:Before mixing, pour KEMPEROL® V 210 M Waterproofing into a separate container. Then, mix 0.6 kg KEMPEROL® CP Catalyst Powder component C thoroughly into 19.4 kg KEMPEROL® V 210 M Waterproofing (approx. 2 min.). At 20 °C no dissolving time! - At 5 °C approx. 15 min. dissolving time. Stir again!Application:Approx. 2/3 of the KEMPEROL® V 210 M Waterproofing is applied to the substrate and KEMPEROL® Fleece is rolled with a perlon roller, removing air bubbles and allowing an overlap of 5 cm. Then the remaining 1/3 of the KEMPEROL® V 210 M Waterproofing is poured onto the surface until complete saturation is achieved. Application Approximately 2/3rd of the required KEMPEROL® resin should be applied to the primed substrate prior to embedding the KEMPEROL® 165 Fleece. All overlaps in the fleece should be saturated to ensure continuity of the system, and be a minimum of 50 mm. When this has changed colour by rolling or brushing from above, the remaining 1/3rd of resin is applied to the surface and lightly rolled to remove excess material. The interface with door and window elements etc., minimum recommended height 15 cm, should have a minimum 5 cm overlap. Remove the bag from the aluminium packaging. Knead component A (cream/white coloured) thoroughly (until uniform colour achieved). Pull away the rubber cord separating the two components, so that both components A and B can be mixed together. Now knead the bag quickly and thoroughly (approx. 60 secs.) so that a homogenous, streak-free primer is formed. Cut off one corner of the bag and pour the KEMPERTEC® D-Primer onto the surface and work quickly. Apply the primer evenly with a nylon roller until the pores are closed. Distribute with a nylon roller avoiding accumulation of material. After approximately 12 hours (depending on weather conditions, such as wind, ambient temperature and humidity) and provided that the primed surface is tack-free and dry, further suitable KEMPER SYSTEM products can be applied. Important note: KEMPERTEC® D-Primer must be overcoated within 8 days of application, otherwise adhesion of subsequent coats cannot be guaranteed and repriming will be necessary. To avoid this, KEMPERDUR® NQ 0408 Natural Quartz (approx. 2 kg/m²), should be strewed into the wet primer, allowing recoating to take place unhindered after this 8 day period. Personal protective equipment should be worn. Clean the tools immediately after use with KEMPERTEC® MEK Cleaning Agent. Clean your hands and rub KEMPER SYSTEM skin care cream into the skin.

Application The substrate must be dry, sound and free from any material that would hinder adhesion. Prepare the substrate according to Technical Information Tl 21 - Substrate Preparation. The priming recommendations should be followed. Apply only when substrate and ambient temperatures exceed 5 °C and are declining. During application the surface temperature must be 3 °C above the dew point. If the substrate temperature is below or at the dew point temperature then moisture can form at the surface which can affect coating adhesion and cure. (Please refer to DIN 4108 - 5 Tab.1 for a dew point graph). Remove the bag from the aluminium packaging. Knead component A (cream/white coloured) thoroughly (until uniform colour achieved). Pull away the rubber cord separating the two components, so that both components A and B can be mixed together. Now knead the bag quickly and thoroughly (approx. 60 secs.) so that a homogenous, streak-free primer is formed. Cut off one corner of the bag and pour the KEMPERTEC® R-Primer onto the surface and work quickly. Prime at least once until saturated. Spread out evenly using a nylon roller, avoiding any build-up of material. After approximately 2-3 hours (depending on weather conditions, such as wind, ambient temperature and

Application The substrate must be dry (in concrete, the residual moisture in the upper 2 cm must be < 5 %), sound and free from any material that would hinder adhesion. Prepare the substrate according to Technical Information Tl 21 - Substrate Preparation. The priming recommendations should be followed. Apply only when substrate and ambient temperature exceed 5 °C and are declining. During application the surface temperature must be 3 °C above the dew point. If the dew point is not reached, a moisture film can form on the surface to be treated and cause separation (DIN 4108 - 5 Tab.1). KEMPEROL® AC-Primer may only be used with KEMPEROL® CP Catalyst Powder. The quantity must be adjusted depending on the particular material temperature(see table).

The KEMPERTEC® AC-Primer must be poured onto the surface and distributed evenly, immediately after mixing with KEMPEROL® CP Catalyst Powder. Prime evenly in one operation with a nylon roller or a rubber slider until saturation. When using a rubber slider, it is necessary to roll over the surface again with the perlon roller to avoid material accumulation. The next stage can be started afterapprox. 30 minutes when the primer surface is no longer tacky.

KEMPERTEC® AC-Primer must be overcoated within 8 days of application, otherwise adhesion of subsequent coats cannot be guaranteed and repriming will be necessary. To avoid this, the wet primer can be blinded with KEMPERDUR® NQ 0408 Natural Quartz (approx. 2 kg/m²), allowing recoating to take place unhindered after this 8 day period. Use as alkali protection layer: To form an alkali-resistant barrier (see also Technical Information TI 15 - Alkalinity), apply a coat of KEMPERTEC®AC-Primer to the KEMPEROL® waterproofing membrane (approx. 400-500 g/m²). Immediately after application, strew in approx. 500 - 1000 g/m² KEMPERDUR® NQ 0712 Natural Quartz, ensuring full surface coverage. Sufficient ventilation is required. The corresponding instructions should be followed. Personal protective equipment (breathing protective mask with filter A/P2, protective gloves, protective glasses) should be worn. Clean the tools immediately after use with KEMPERTEC® MEK Cleaning Agent. Clean your hands and rub KEMPER SYSTEM skin care cream into the skin.

Technical Information 15 Protecting against alkalinity of KEMPEROL® and KEMPERDUR® Products Without appropriate protection, KEMPER SYSTEM liquid polymer- or polyurethane-based products exhibit inadequate long-term resistance to media with extreme pH values and, therefore, must be protected against the damaging effects of alkaline media.

On building sites there are many products exhibiting alkaline reactions, e.g. screeds, concrete, tile adhesives, etc. These materials contain large proportions of cement, whose principal constituent is calcium hydroxide, although there are also small amounts of sodium hydroxide. Dissolved in water (electrolytic dissociation), this sodium hydroxide exhibits a strongly alkaline reaction (up to pH 14).

This means that when a product containing cement is placed directly on a KEMPEROL or KEMPERDUR product, e.g. a screed laid to falls or ceramic finishes laid in a mortar bed, over the long term there is the risk of damaging the waterproofing or coating system. In chemical terms this process is known as saponification. The saponification leads to embrittlement of the waterproofing or coating system, which reduces its elasticity.

Adequate protection can be achieved only by applying a an alkaline protection layer on the cured waterproofing or coating membrane.

On one-component products (e. g. KEMPEROL® 1K-PUR, KEMPERDUR®

Deko) the alkaline protection layer can be applied after 3 to 7 days, on two-component products (e. g. KEMPEROL®

2K-PUR, KEMPEROL® V 210, KEMPERDUR®

Deko 2K) the alkaline protection layer can be applied after one day.

After this period of time, the KEMPERTEC® EP-Primer, KEMPERTEC®

EP5-Primer or KEMPERTEC®

AC-Primer can be applied to the surface.

This can be carried out in one operation with a thick coating, approx. 400-600 g/m2

(KEMPERTEC® AC Primer: max. 500 g/m²). KEMPERTEC® NQ 0712 Natural Quartz is spread

liberally (leaving no gaps) over the primer while it is still wet.

However, in order to avoid imperfections in the protective layer, it is better to apply two coats of KEMPERTEC®

EP-Primer, KEMPERTEC® EP5-Primer or KEMPERTEC®

AC-Primer each coat approx. 200-300 g/m2. With KEMPERTEC®

EP-Primer wait for one day, with KEMPERTEC®

EP5-Primer for 4 hours, with KEMPERTEC® AC Primer for one hour before

applying the second coat. Before the second coat is dry, KEMPERTEC® NQ 0712 Natural Quartz is spread liberally (leaving no gaps) over the primer.

days at 20 °C, with KEMPERTEC® EP5-Primer wait for two days and with KEMPERTEC®

Technical Information 21 Checking – Assessing – Preparing the substrate

General

The most important requirement for the success and long-term adhesion of KEMPER SYSTEM products is the bond with the substrate and its testing, assessment and preparation. Ignoring this requirement is the most common cause of defective workmanship, defects and complaints.

Balconies, terraces and patios can have many different substrates, e.g. old ceramic tiles, mastic asphalt, old paint, or concrete/screeds. According to the requirements of DIN 18365 "Flooring works", any substrate that is to be waterproofed must be firm, clean and free from all loose material, dust, dirt, oil and grease.

According to the German Contract Procedures for Building Works (VOB), the contractor must test the substrate to ascertain its suitability for the specified covering. The contractor should inform the client immediately in writing if he has any doubts about the suitability of the substrate for the specified works.

Checking the moisture content of the substrate

In all cases, the moisture content of the top 20 mm of substrate may not exceed 5%. In the case of a fresh cement screed or concrete surfaces, a coating is not possible until the moisture content (equilibrium moisture content) of the material has dropped below 5%. This is usually not until 28 days after laying the screed or placing the concrete.

In the case of substrates in contact with the soil, they must be adequately isolated against groundwater and rising damp (capillary moisture), e.g. by means of a layer of gravel (filter) plus a damp-proof membrane (dpm). So-called waterproof concrete and waterproofing screeds do not represent adequate protection because they are still permeable to water vapour.

A chilled mirror hygrometer can be used to measure the moisture content. Rising damp can be checked by covering an area of approx. 1 m2 with dense polyethylene sheeting. If the covered area turns a dark colour within 24 hours, rising damp is to be expected.

Checking the strength of the substrate

In all cases, the substrate must possess adequate strength.

The compressive strength of concrete and screeds can be determined with a rebound hammer (Schmidt hammer). A value of min. 30 N/mm2 is essential. The pull-off strength is determined with an adhesive strength tester. The value must be min. 1.5 N/mm2.

KEMPEROL® waterproofing systems are elastic, have a high inherent strength and can bridge over cracks, but as they are very thin (approx. 2 mm), they cannot perform a load-distributing function.

Preparing the substrate

The substrate should be prepared in such a way that a permanent, strong bond is achieved between the system to be applied and the substrate. To achieve this, the substrate must be consistently firm and free from all separating substances, sharp edges, burrs, flashes, fins, etc. The choice of a suitable preparatory method depends on the condition of the existing surface, the specification and the waterproofing system to be applied.

Besides the "traditional" methods of treatment

• grinding (grinder) • cutting (angle grinder, floor saw) • chiselling (chisel) • hammering (chisel scaler, needle gun) • brushing (brush, rotary brushes, brush machine) • planing (planer) • sweeping (broom, magnetic broom, sweeping machine) • blowing off (hot/warm air) • vacuuming (industrial vacuum cleaner)

Cleaning methods using solvents are also still in use, particularly in the case of greasy or atmospheric pollution and/or flexible synthetic sheeting.

Preparing the substrate 1. Flatness of substrate

The flatness of the substrate is based on DIN 18202 "Dimensional tolerances in building construction". Unevenness and irregularities cannot be compensated for by the KEMPEROL®

primer to be applied and therefore require special treatment. High spots must be removed and low spots filled with KEMPER SYSTEM trowel-applied levelling or repair Mortar.

In this case the levelling mortar is used after applying the primer. The filling compound consists of a mixture of

- KEMPERTEC® EP-Primer and KEMPERTEC KR Quartz Sand Mixture in a ratio of 1 : 4 or

- KEMPERTEC® EP5-Primer and KEMPERTEC KR Quartz Sand Mixture in a ratio of 1 : 2.

The repair mortar is likewise used after applying the primer. The mortar consists of a mixture of

- KEMPERTEC® EP-Primer and KEMPERTEC KR Quartz Sand Mixture in a ratio of 1 : 9 or

- KEMPERTEC® EP5-Primer and KEMPERTEC KR Quartz Sand Mixture in a ratio of 1 : 5.

The repair mortar is used for unevenness in the range 6–20 mm.

Repair mortar can also be used to make good smaller damaged sections or spalling, e.g. along edges of joints. Depending on the application and the local conditions, the quartz sand/binder mixing ratio may be varied in order to obtain an optimum result. For further details please refer to the technical data sheets for KEMPERTEC® EP-Primer or KEMPERTEC® EP5-Primer.

Either mortar has to be scattered with KEMPERTEC NQ 0408.

2. Soiling

KEMPERTEC® primers do not adhere well, if at all, to soiled substrates. Therefore, the surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned wet or dry depending on the type of soiling with, for example, an industrial vacuum cleaner, high-pressure water jets, KEMPERTEC® MEK Cleaning Agent when using steam cleaners, scouring machines and flame cleaners. Any bitumen or products containing creosote adhering to the substrate must be removed completely by planning or blast-cleaning.

3. Porous and loose constituents

Cement laitance, cement flakes, mortar residue and all surface constituents, e.g. old paint, that are not permanently attached to the substrate must be removed by chiselling, planing, blast-cleaning or grinding prior to applying the primer and can be levelled as described under point 1 above.

4. Cracks in the substrate

On substrates with a cement binder a network of surface cracks does not have any detrimental effect on KEMPER SYSTEM waterproofing systems; however, greater consumption of primer must be allowed for because the substrate must be fully saturated. Continuous shrinkage cracks can be filled with KEMPERTEC® Filling Compound after applying the primer.

Settlement cracks and other cracks due to structural movement can be filled with KEMPEROL®

Repair Mortar and are bridged over reliably by applying, for example, a double layer of waterproofing at this point.

5. Joints

Joints in the substrate should be straight, with a consistent width and stable edges. Any damage can be made good with KEMPERTEC® Repair Mortar.

6. Voids

In the case of voids, e.g. under old ceramic tile finishes, the tiles must be removed and the void must be made good with a similar material. KEMPERTEC® Repair Mortar can also be used to level such unevenness.

Technical Information 23 The use of products containing solvents If porous or absorbent substrates (concrete < grade B15, concrete with lightweight aggregates, aerated concrete blocks, calcium silicate bricks, autoclaved aerated concrete, clay bricks, timber, etc.) . adjacent to occupied interior spaces . are to be treated with a KEMPEROL® waterproofing system or a KEMPERDUR® coating system, please note the following points:

KEMPEROL® or KEMPERDUR® products containing solvents may not be used directly on porous or absorbent substrates! (Possibility of solvent odours inside the

building)

Check the possibility of using solvent-free products.

Generally, make good all open joints, gaps, etc. or large areas of damage before beginning work.

If, nevertheless, products containing solvents are to be used, prime the entire substrate first with two coats of solvent-free KEMPERTEC® EP-Primer or KEMPERTEC®

EP5-Primer to close all the pores. Work a layer of fine sand into the second coat.

Products containing solvents must be applied only in the thickness specified on the technical data sheets.

When applying solvents containing KEMPERTEC®, KEMPEROL® or KEMPERDUR® products indoors or around windows, doors or the intakes to air-conditioning systems, fans, etc., please take all necessary safety precautions! (Switch off air-conditioning, use fresh and exhaust-air plant, etc.)

Provide occupants and users with all necessary information about the work well in advance.
