Vibratory Bowl Finishing MachinesDesigned and built for the most challenging finishing applications, the flexible vibratory bowl range can be used for a variety of applications: deburring, descaling, radiusing, cleaning, polishing, general surface improvement. A range of standard sizes is available but the machines can be customised for specific applications.

Features

Process Chamber

The process bowls are stress relieved to improve their life and the internal chamber section designed to optimise the tumbling action and ensure shorter process times. They are also designed to ensure ease of customisation if required.

Pneumatic Separation system

If auto separation is required, this option ensures no parts are trapped under the flap and the flap system is not damaged. By reversing the rotational direction of the motor, the contents in the process chamber move in the opposite direction of the separation area and clearing the area so the flap seats correctly.

Superior Bowl Lining

The bowl lining is extremely important as it ensures the base bowl fabrication is protected and the components are effectively processed. A special grade of polyurethane materials, formulated to enhance the overall life of the machine, is used, with hot cured cast linings or spray linings available up to 30 mm thick in processing areas. The high wear resistant, polyurethane material reduces the coefficient of friction between the media and bowl, increasing media life.

A wide range of cast systems to choose from, where variables such as shore hardness range, physical properties, and chemical resistance can be selected for particularly difficult applications.

Small delicate parts, or part on part processes, can benefit from wedge profile lining which prevents the parts from sticking to the outer wall of the process chamber.

Dosing Unit

A diaphragm dosing pump, usually wired to the control panel of the machine determines the liquid compound flow rate dosed in to the bowl. Once set, it offers accurate control of liquid compound use, reducing wastage and saving costs. Capable of handling all types of liquid compounds, the system helps to achieve a clean component, extended media life and maintains the cleanliness of the bowl. A dual feed system allows liquid compound and water to be dosed separately, so local water authority regulations can be met without the need for expensive header tanks. Floor-mounted or wall-mounted dosing units are available.

Acoustic Lid

The acoustic lid uses a custom designed acoustic foam which has improved properties of sound absorption, keeping the machines quiet in operation and reducing costs on any additional noise deadening enclosures. The lid can be operated manually or pneumatically.

Work Bowl Drain

The work bowl drain is polyurethane casted with openings to suit the media geometry. These drain designs allow effective discharge of the effluent to ensure that the process is clean and effective.

Vibratory Bowl - Separation system

Where separation of components from the media is required after processing, these machines feature a mechanical flap directing the media and components onto a separation grid with openings that the media fall through, back into the bowl, while the components continue to a separate receptacle. Reverse separation is also possible if the application requires it.

Vibratory Bowl - Ball burnishing

Specially designed for burnishing applications using stainless steel media or a mix of burnishing media, these machines are designed for this heavy duty application with a powerful drive system and special springs. The bowl has a special rubber lining to assist the movement of the parts during the process and can be manufactured with or without separation to suit the applications.

Vibratory Bowl - Processing of large circular components

Featuring a narrower central section of the working bowl, this machine enables the processing of large circular components, such as vane rings, without the need for fixtures. The machine can accommodate a component with a bore of more than 250 mm and an overall diameter of no larger than 940 mm.

Vibratory Bowl - part-on-part application

This series is robust and has been designed for a process where 100% discharge of media and parts is required at the end of the process. This is accomplished through the pneumatically operated discharge door which opens and allows the unload of media and components.

On completion of the process, parts and media are discharged from the bowl as a pneumatically operated door opens. Additional equipment can enable automated component/media separation and auto return of the media to the bowl.

Vibratory Bowl - Avoids impingement damages

Unique in concept, these machines feature individual chambers to avoid components impinging on each other and causing damage during processing. It requires manual loading/unloading.

Vibratory Bowl - Single speed motor

Where manual separation is mandatory, both large and small batches of components can be processed in this machine. Featuring a single speed motor, the flyweights are adjustable to transfer the optimum amount of energy and efficiently to produce the required finish.

Features

Drive system

The powerful, heavy-duty work chamber has an extended shaft on both sides and a foot mounted vibratory motor to impart powerful and uniform vibrations to the mass in the trough. The vibrations drive the mass in a linear/spiral path causing the media to be continuously in contact with the components, providing effective processing to finish the components in the shortest time.

The heart of the machine, the vibratory motor is designed to meet the conditions, with special castings and bearings making them mechanically robust and reliable.

Process Chamber

Stress relieved to improve life, the internal chamber has a specially designed “U” section to subject the components to an effective tumbling action and ensure efficient process times. Designed for ease of access, the chambers offer the flexibility to process large or irregular components and are easily customised.

Part Fixture

For processing multiple sensitive parts, special fixtures are available to mount the components and avoid part-on-part process and protects them from coming into contact with the side walls of the process.

Divider Plates

Efficient batch processing of precision, or delicate, components is possible with the option of fully polyurethane coated plates to sub-divide the work chamber. The divider plate fixture system is designed to offer flexibility in changing the chamber size to suit the part geometry.

Acoustic Lid

The acoustic lid uses a custom designed acoustic foam which has improved properties of sound absorption thereby keeping the machines quiet in operation, which reduces costs on any additional noise deadening enclosures. The lid can be operated manually or pneumatically.

Vibratory Troughs - Capacity from 85 - 1417 Litres

Designed to be simple to operate and highly efficient, these Trough Finishing Machines are suitable for large and small batches of components where manual separation is mandatory. Featuring a single speed motor as standard, adjustable flyweights transfer the optimum amount of energy to produce the required finish in the optimum time. Several process chambers can be created in the rectangular, polyurethane lined, process chamber to suit different part sizes and multiple media types.

Designed and manufactured with a single/dual/variable speed motor to suit the application, both large and small batches of components can be processed on these machines, while adjustable flyweights optimise energy transfer to achieve the desired finish in the shortest time.

Vibratory Trough - Capacity 60 Litres

A very user friendly kit for deburring or burnishing operations, this machine is ideally suited for small batch works and delicate components, housing a work chamber which is polyurethane lined and working on the same principle as the larger trough machines. Powered with a standard 16A socket, single phase, 240V AC supply and mounted on castor wheels, the machines can be moved with ease. They have their own recirculating tank with pump for dosing the mixture of water and compound for the process, and are relatively quiet.

Dual Machines - Combined Wet & Dry Vibratory FinishingThis easy to control design features two chambers. A polyurethane lined inner chamber for wet process applications: deburring, descaling, radiusing, cleaning, polishing and general surface improvement, and a heated outer chamber for drying/cleaning the parts after being processed. Parts can automatically be transferred from the inner chamber to the outer chamber.

Separation System

• With the machine still vibrating a polyurethane flap can be engaged, manually or pneumatically, to form a bridge to a separation screen. The media falls through the screen back into the bowl while the components continue to the outer chamber for drying. This operation is repeated once the parts have been processed in the outer chamber.

• Sturdy, reinforced separation screens, capable of handling the weight of the parts, can be manufactured out of a variety of materials with openings to suit the geometry of the media and components. Holes and slots are typical.

• A wedge type locking system reduces down time during screen change/removal.

• Inverse separation screens are also available for applications where the media size is larger than the parts.

• Spray bars over the screen are an option to clean the parts prior to discharge from the machine as are air knives to push back any media carried over the screen by components and also assists in the removal of excessive water on the components.

Inner/Outer Bowls

• The inner (wet) chamber section is designed to provide an effective and efficient tumbling action to ensure the shortest possible process time.

• Stress relieved to improve life the process bowl can easily be customised.

• Separation screen to transfer components from the inner chamber to the outer chamber to be dried.

Automatic Dispenser

A controlled method of introducing accurate quantities of process consumables into the inner chamber at precise regular intervals.

Parts Feeder

A parts feeder stores a batch of components and transfers a pre-set weight of them into the machine inner process chamber, recharging the bowl automatically after each process cycle.

Dust Extractor for Maize Application

The Dust Extractor is a self-contained collector built for collecting the fine dust resulting from the process carried out in the outer chamber. With a compact design, it minimises the floor space and it fits in virtually any plant layout. It is available in standard version or with explosion relief system.

Vibratory DryingEasily integrated with the vibratory finishing machines, these dryers can offer a complete finishing solution for your components. Available in standard sizes or customised to bespoke specifications, they provide 100% separation of parts and can be used for batch processing or single lap continuous process applications.

Flap separation system

Despite the unique, elliptical shape of the process chamber, the separation flap operates without catching any parts or agro media when moving into position, ensuring no parts are left in the work bowl during separation.

Imbalance weights

The upper and lower imbalance weights are securely fastened to both ends of the motor shaft and are adjustable to suit the process parameters.

Suspension

A stable machine base and special arrangement of the springs ensures stability of the process chamber whilst the machine is running, without the need to bolt it to the floor.

Process Chamber

• The elliptical shape of the stress relieved, metal spun process chamber provides more drying area in the machine for a smaller footprint.

• Components can be loaded into the chamber through a side loading chute

• Various channel sizes and overall diameters are available to suit the application.

Dust Extractor for Maize Application

• Compact, self-contained, quiet and efficient, the dust extractor for collecting the fine dust resulting from the process, is quick to install and easy to maintain.

Vibratory Dryer for large and small batches of components

Simple to operate, these highly efficient machines are constructed with a component separation and discharge facility. The work chamber has an elliptical shape which gives an extra drying area to minimise drying time.

Manufactured with a single speed motor and adjustable flyweights as standard to optimise energy transfer and achieve the desired finish in the shortest time, both large and small batches of components can be processed in this machine, either as a batch process or a continuous single lap process. Heating elements heat the drying media (Maizorb) which absorbs and removes any moisture from the parts, while a gentle tumbling action prevents component damage. Separation is by either a manual or pneumatically operated flap system.

Vibratory Dryer - Conveyorised Electrically Heated Drying Oven

Best suited for drying a variety of components, which are large in nature or where the agro media cannot be used due to the risk of lodgement, this machine features three banks of heating elements and an air circulating fan for efficient drying.

Components travel through a heated drying chamber on a tensioning and tracking adjustable, variable speed, metal conveyor belt, which is housed in a strong and rigid framework. Shafts are supported in sealed-for-life, self-aligning, bearings and driven by a precision chain drive, which incorporates a friction type safety torque limiter and is totally enclosed in a sheet metal guard.

Vibratory Dryer - Re-circulation of drying media

Used to dry the wet components that come out of the finishing machine, these dryers comprise of an inner rotating chamber where the components get dried using appropriate agro media, absorbing the moisture and preventing corrosion.

Vibratory Dryer - Continuous Drying Machine

Ideally suited for small batch works and delicate components, these machines can be used for either batch or continuous drying. The machine features a polyurethane lined work chamber and is mounted on castor wheels so it can be moved with ease, while a media discharge door assists to empty the bowl.

In certain applications, such as sanitation of cutlery, a UV lamp on the lid which automatically switches on when the lid is closed. Powered by a standard 16A, single phase, 240V AC supply, the machine is quiet in operation and user friendly.

Super Centrifugal Polishing & Deburring MachinesSuper Centrifugal Finishing (SCF) is a process that delivers superior results in a short space of time using very high gravitational force.

Very flexible, it allows small or large numbers of parts to be finished simultaneously and can be used across a wide range of industries.

In many cases the results achieved with SCF are impossible in a standard vibratory process, particularly applications that have a high surface finish requirement as well as removal of heavy machining or grinding marks. Parts that require hand finishing are also perfect for SCF, one of the main advantages being reduced processing times. SCF is one of the most efficient batch finishing methods - up to ten times faster than vibratory finishing, with most applications taking 10 to 30 minutes, and producing superior finishes.

SCF creates a force of 5-25 times normal gravity with 3 or 4 hexagonal/circular barrels mounted on a turret. The turret and the barrels rotate at high speed in opposing directions and the resultant centrifugal force increases the weight of the abrasive media in the barrels which slides against the components, also in the barrels, to produce a rapid cutting action.

Components can be processed wet or dry. In a wet process, parts are generally loaded as a batch with media and a solution made of a barrelling compound and water. Large or fragile components can be processed without the use of fixtures, divider plates forming compartments within the barrel so that the parts are processed individually and do not impinge on each other.

Selecting the suitable media for your application

The process to achieve the required surface finish involves using the correct machinery but the media and compound are of equal importance and the following factors should be considered when selecting these.

The media transmits the energy generated by the equipment to the parts being processed and are capable of heavy burr removal and edge radiusing to smooth and bright surfaces. A variety of different media types are available: Ceramic, Plastic, Agro, Pre-Treated and Stainless Steel.

Ceramic Media is recommended for removing burrs, edge radiusing, burnishing and quickly removing polishing lines on components made from harder materials. Faster cut Medias are designed to be softer and to continuously expose fresh cutting surfaces. Polishing Medias are harder but contain no abrasives and are used for burnishing. In general, the slower the cut, the harder the media.

Plastic Media is lightweight and is manufactured out of soft bonding agents, which allow it to remove burrs without rolling the burr onto the part. This media is suitable for obtaining a very smooth surface finish or a bright or matte finish on components made from softer materials.

Agro Media is used for surface brightening or final finish refinement while Pre-treated Media is for achieving a high lustre or mirror finish. Stainless Steel Media is used for burnishing, cleaning, improving compressive strength and light deburring.

Media TypeWhen choosing the shape of the media it is important to consider the geometry of the part to prevent it lodging in the component and to ensure the finish is consistent.

Flat sided media, such as triangles, tri-stars, wedges and the end side of cones, can generate longer surface contact time on edges for deburring and radiusing.

Round shaped media, such as balls, cylinders and cones generate a single point contact, concentrating energy in one small point, and producing more work in that area.

For components which have corners, holes and slots both Tri-Star media and wedge media are recommended, to minimise the possibility of media lodging in the component.

For surface improvement of hard to reach areas, an ellipse or cylinder shape can be considered.

Media Shape

The component finish can also depend on the size of media chosen. Larger media will generate higher energy and will cut and finish faster, but will suffer from higher wear rate. Larger media is also recommended for processing larger parts.

Smaller media can hold more water and compound and reduce part-on-part damage. Smaller media also has a gentler impact on the component, resulting in longer processing times but better finishes and less media wear.

Media size should be a different size to the components to enable complete separation at the end of the finishing process. If the media is larger than the components, an inverse separation system can be used. For ferrous components, magnetic separation is also available.

Media Size

To avoid damaging the component, it is important to consider the part material and the hardness of the media. Ceramics are harder than plastic and may cause damage to components made from soft materials.

Special MediaSpecial Plastic Media

Developed to finish components manufactured out of non-ferrous, semi-precious and precious metals as well as stainless steel. Some of the applications include grinding and polishing.

• SPM4 (particularly good for achieving a low surface finish on medical implants manufactured using materials such as Cobalt Chrome and Stainless Steel).

• SPM7, SPM6 and SPM5 (recommended for removing machining lines on Cobalt Chrome and Stainless Steel parts, SPM7 being the most aggressive plastic media option). For further dimensions and special types of media specific for your application, please contact us.

Wood Media

This media can be used in different applications on part materials such as plastic, nylon, ceramics, wood and metals. Generally used with liquid compounds to achieve a smooth or polished finish. Also used for dry tumbling or light deburring, wood media is available in different sizes and shapes: Cubes, Diamonds, Pegs.

Stainless Steel

Mainly used for burnishing, cleaning and light deburring. This media wears very slowly with a life of up to 10,000 hours. For a burnished finish, it is recommended that the media is used with the burnishing compound in the Vibratory Bowl Ball Burnishing machine series which has the added reinforcement needed to cope with the weight of the media.

• Stainless Steel Balls (available in sizes ranging from 2mm to 6mm in diameter)

• Stainless Steel Ball Cones (dimensions on request).

• Stainless Steel Pins (dimensions on request).

Aluminium Oxide

An aggressive and tough media suitable for different applications such as general blasting, surface finishing, grinding, polishing, matte finishing and edge rounding, it is also used for cleaning and preparing the component surface prior to plating or painting. A durable abrasive, aluminium oxide, can be recycled a number of times making it a cost effective media to deburr parts made from hard metals and sintered carbide. It is also much lighter than other media making it ideal for components with thin sections. It is available in the following options:

• Brown Aluminium Oxide (high performance for aerospace and automotive industries).

• White Aluminium Oxide (commonly used in the medical industry).

Precision Polishing

To provide a complete surface finishing solution we offer a precision polishing service for components from various industry sectors, including the removal of manufacturing defects from casting and forging processes. A fast turnaround and excellent quality as well as cost benefits.

Inspection

Trained inspectors ensure every component is inspected to the required specification prior to delivery. Inspections can include visual, dimensional and surface finish measurements, while document controls ensure that all inspections are recorded for traceability purposes.

High Energy and Vibratory Finishing Services

Equipment includes Vibratory and Super Centrifugal machines to process parts of variable sizes and batch quantities, the SCM providing a fast and efficient quality finish, preventing impingement while eliminating the need for fixturing.

Waste Water Treatment

It is critical that the effluent, polluted with oil, media and metal fines, is treated before going to drain or recycled back into the system. Each area or district have their own environmental requirements so the effluent should be analysed to ensure it complies.

Recycling can save on the significant amount of water and compounds used and the waste can be recycled, but there are certain applications where this is not advised.

In these cases, treated effluent can be transferred directly to the drain and a range of flocculants (powder and liquid) coupled with our Centrifugal technology are available.
