“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow
of death, I will fear no evil.”
This is perhaps an all too familiar line of the 23rd
Psalm. I say “familiar”, because when we hear it our
first thought associated with it is most likely death. It is
read at funerals more often than any other Psalm and
perhaps is one of the most read scriptures, period. I
myself use the 23rd Psalm quite often, because I do find
comfort in the words, yet it probably means more to me
in my daily journey.
I am reminded that no matter what I am confronted
with in life, no matter how dismal the outlook of things,
I have nothing to fear. God is with me to give me hope
and comfort and to help me find the courage and
strength to face whatever life may hold for me.
As I write this I have witnessed several of our family
here at West Lake go through life changing
circumstances, involving surgeries, long hospital stays,
the need for full time care, time rehabilitating, and the
death of a loved one. We must all walk through our
valleys in life and it is in these moments we are
reminded by the Psalmist that even though we face
what feels like the darkest times of our life, there is
hope and love surrounding us.
Give thanks for God’s mercy and goodness, trust
Him to sustain you in your time of need, and rejoice in
the intimacy of a relationship with Him.
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes
me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my
soul. He guides me along the right paths for his
name’s sake. Even though I walk through the
darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with
me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You
prepare a table before me in the presence of my
enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup
overflows. Surely your goodness and love will
follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Psalm 23 NIV Translation.
Blessings, Kelly
From your WLCC BOARD MODERATOR
Terry Mathena
We are already moving towards the fall time of
the year and so many great things are going on
within our church. Before long many of us will be
attending fall festivals and enjoying the fall colors
throughout the lake area. Some of us will be
heading south to enjoy the winter in warmer
weather.
It’s truly an exciting time of the year for the life
of the church. The Samaritan Purse Shoebox
Campaign is underway. I can’t imagine being a
young person in a third world country or
devastated environment with nothing and
receiving one of these boxes, possibly from
someone within our congregation. The committee
is asking for 150 boxes this year and I sincerely
hope as a congregation we can make that goal.
I am so thankful for the committees and the
work they do that sometimes it goes unnoticed.
They do it so quietly and well that we might not
even know that it’s being done. I would like to say
“Thank You” for all the work that they do to make
our church events go so smoothly.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR : October 13,
2019 At 3:00 P.M. We are having a special event
at the church for our Pastor Kelly Caldwell
celebrating his completion of his Certificate of
Pastoral Ministry. I’m excited for Kelly and what
his efforts will bring to our congregation.
Don’t forget to ask a friend or neighbor to
come join us here at West Lake Christian Church.
God Bless Each Of You! Terry Mathena

RESOLVE O what a happy soul am I!
Although I cannot see,
I am resolved that in this world
contented I will be;
How many blessings I enjoy
that other people don’t!
To weep and sigh because
I’m Blind, I cannot, and I won’t.
Note*- Fanny Crosby wrote this poem
when she was only eight years old.
Blinded in infancy, Miss Crosby spent
the ninety-eight years of her life
composing over 9,000 songs and poems,
many of which mention a deeper sight
than that of our physical vision.
“Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind
but now I see”.
John 9:25
Ladies join us for CWF October 8th,
2019. Let us share the joy with others. Blessings,

Where Is God When It Hurts? Tuesdays 10am-12pm
Oct. 15 – Nov. 19
Life happens to all of us and we struggle to cope with our grief and hurting.
God helps us in ways we sometimes do not even realize. Come, let us learn
and share together as we explore the book Where is God when it Hurts by
Phillip Yancey. Using examples from the Bible and from his own experiences,
Yancey looks at pain—physical, emotional, and spiritual—and helps us
understand why we suffer. Bring your Bibles, your questions, and your stories,
as we allow God to guide us, strengthen us and encourage us.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD 2019
Operation Christmas Child is a way to show God’s love and bring the
message of His Son’s gift of salvation to children in over 112 countries and
territories around the world.
In 2018, over 10.6 million shoe boxes were delivered to needy
children all across the world! Many times the boxes are delivered after
disasters. What arrives in the shoe box may well be the child’s only possessions at that time.
WHAT: We at West Lake Christian Church supply the contents to fill the gift boxes for
children. Each box will contain a “Wow” item, personal care items, clothing and
accessories, crafts and activities, school supplies, and toys.
Note the suggestion list on back for ideas & for items that cannot be included.
Boxes are packed designated for either a Girl or Boy in ages 2-4; 5-9 or 10-14.
You pick by which label you cut and paste to the top of your box.
You may use one of the Samaritans Purse* OCC boxes from the table; or use a similar
size box (or a bit larger –like a boot box or plastic box) Samaritan’s Purse is an organization
headed by Franklin Graham, son of Billy Graham. We also send $9 for each box. This covers shipping and the book about Jesus in the
child’s language supplied with each gift box. Christian teachers then provide a 12-lesson
class “The Greatest Journey” where they learn to follow Christ and share Him with others.
At the end of their classes each child receives a Bible in his/her own language.
Be a global missionary right from our church at West Lake!
HOW TO PARTICIPATE:
1. Pray for this project and the children who will be reached
2. Buy items suggested on the back of this sheet and place in designated plastic
bins in the parlor near the front entry at church before Thursday, November 14.
3. Donate $$$ toward the project. If you aren’t a “shopper” make a donation to West
Lake Christian Church designated for Operation Christmas Child. The team will buy
needed items. We also need donations to cover the $9 per box.
4. Help pack boxes – Friday November 15 at WLCC at 10:00 am. Members of the
congregation will gather to fill the boxes.
DATES:
Thursday, November 14 - deadline for bringing items for the boxes.
Friday, November 15 - PACKING SESSION at church.
Friday, November 22 - DELIVER OUR 150 boxes (PLUS a check totaling # of
boxes times $9) to drop off point!

Aw-fall Jokes! Share some laughs — or groans — with these autumn-themed jokes:
• What did the tree say to autumn? “Leaf me alone!”
• What did one autumn leaf say to another? “I’m falling for you.”
• How do you fix a broken pumpkin? With a pumpkin patch.
• How do leaves get from place to place? With autumn-mobiles.
•What’s the ratio of a pumpkin’s circumference to its diameter? Pumpkin pi.
• Why are trees very forgiving? Because in the fall they “let it go” and in the
spring they “turn over a new leaf.”

Dinner for 8 is held in the spring & fall. It is an event where 8-12 people (depending on # host home can
seat) gather to share good food and fellowship in a “’host home”. It is an excellent opportunity to get to know
folks you might not know well. Past participants say this is where church acquaintances began to form real
friendships.
How it works: Those who sign up to attend are grouped by the event coordinator(s) into appropriate sized
groups for the host homes. Hosts provide the main dish and beverages and contact their assigned guests about
what to bring; appetizers, salad, side dish, or dessert. Time is determined by host home … midday, mid-
afternoon, or evening.
How to attend: Sign up on clip board in entry, on the slip in bulletin or call Norma Johnson 573-207-0546 or
text her cell at 402-880-9989 OR leave word with Jan in the church office 573-374-0647
Interested in being a host? Let Norma know how many guests you want and time of day you want to gather.
SIGN UP BY Sept 29
(Late deciders?…call Norma anyway!)
All couples and individuals are encouraged to participate.

True Spirituality Becoming a Romans 12 Christian
Christians today live in a world that is activity-heavy and relationship-light. We struggle to know what
God wants FROM us and FOR us …. and we're unsure what a real relationship with God really looks like.
God gives us a clear picture of what Christians should look like at the root level in Romans 12. If you're ready
to move beyond the motions of religion and experience a real relationship with God, your journey begins here
where we will touch on the following topics:
Would you like to know what God’s dream for your life is?
What does living like a Christian really mean?
What causes God’s blessings to flow to you and me?
What does God want from you the most?
How to get God's best for your life?
Do you want to “do” life differently?
Who am I?
Where do I belong?
What am I supposed to do?
God has designed you and created you for a specific and unique purpose. Let’s look into these remarks
as we study “True Spirituality: Becoming a Romans 12 Christian” beginning on
Sunday, October 13
9 am in Library
Dinner for Eight 8 Sunday October 6, 2019
All Members & Guests are Invited…

What is it? The lymph nodes filter the fluid going through it capturing bacteria, viruses and other foreign objects. Then the lymphocytes (certain white blood cells) will destroy the substances. These nodes may be in the underarm or groin areas. Lymphedema occurs when the Lymphatic system does not function well and allows a build-up of fluid (edema) in the arms or legs. Causes
Primary- may be present from birth or it may develop as a teenager or adult with no known cause.
Secondary- may be as a result of having lymph nodes removed (may be related to cancer), medications, radiation therapy or injury to the lymph nodes.
Symptoms Swelling (Edema) of an arm or leg Feeling of fullness in your arm or leg Decreased flexibility (movement) of wrist, hand or
ankle Clothes, rings, bracelet or watches may be too tight
Diagnosis If you have these symptoms, see your doctor. The doctor will do a physical exam, ask about your symptoms, ask about any injuries that may have occurred and ask about
any medications you take. If you have had surgery or radiation, then you may already be informed of this possibility.
Treatment It may require wearing a compression garment, eating a healthy diet, watching for any breakdown in the skin. Follow your doctor’s recommendation regarding any exercise to the area. Lake Regional offers support groups at the hospital on the second Tuesday of even numbered months in the Cancer Center at 11:15AM and at the clinic in Eldon on the third Wednesday of the month at 5:30 PM.
