Robots take over ecommerce-drivenlogistics from humans

At courier firm DTDC’s Delhi hub, a 25-arm monster sorts packagesin lightning speed: 3,600 items an hour, or one in every second.

MUMBAI: At courier firm DTDC’s Delhi hub, a 25-arm monster sorts packagesin lightning speed: 3,600 items an hour, or one in every second.

The robotic sorter is one of the highlights of eight automated hubs DTDC issetting up in the country for Rs 50 crore over the next year and half, executive director Abhishek Chakraborty said in a recent interview.

The DTDC initiative is an example of machines increasingly replacing humansat logistics operations as they try to keep up with demand from thefastgrowing ecommerce segment.

Ecommerce companies need third-party support to deliver almost all productsthey sell, and in a segment where cutthroat competition is the norm, packagingquality and the time taken to deliver the product play a major role in customerstickiness. Companies such as Flipkart, Gojavas and DTDC are investinghundreds of crores to modernise logistics.

“By utilising automation and robotics, we expect to reduce time by replacingmanually intensive tasks, and respond quickly to the new and emergingdemands, in most cases even anticipating them,” said Sanjeev Mehta, vicepresident and head of product and design for eKart, Flipkart’s dedicatedlogistics partner.

The company is using automation in select centres to pick and movepackages and will extend this to other facilities, Mehta said. It will also usenew technologies like sorters and profilers to better handle packages asper specific orders. Mehta didn’t give details on investment or the number ofsystems Flipkart is setting up. Amazon India is meanwhile planning to setup its first automated sortation system at one of its 11 facilities, a personwith knowledge of the matter said. Amazon denied comment.

WHY AUTOMATION?

The online retail industry, which was valued at $1 billion two years ago, isexpected to reach $32 billion (more than Rs 2 lakh crore) in 2020, accordingto retail advisory firm Technopak. While online travel still constitutes morethan 70% of the ecommerce segment in the country, online retail’s sharehas doubled from 10% in 2009.

Urgent need for automation also comes from the concept of seasonal risein sales is fast getting obsolete, industry experts said. “For a month youhave an iPhone model as a slow-selling product. Suddenly a retailerannounces a heavy discount the next month and there is a major influx oforders. How do you suddenly get additional manpower to handle a spurt?”said Apurva Vadera, who heads operations at GreyOrange India, one ofthe few home-grown robotics firms.

The company has installed 12 automated sortation systems for Flipkart,Gojavas, Aramex, Delhivery and DTDC since 2009. It is in talks with one ofthese companies to sell “Butler”, a smart automated guided vehicle robot tohelp in picking products fast and putting them into packages, said Vadera, without elaborating.

One of its first customers was Flipkart, for which it designed an automatedsortation system at a fifth of the price that was being charged by anoverseas company, he said.

HOW IT WORKS

Broadly, ecommerce logistics operations can be divided into two stages: i)picking of the right products, combing it with other products (mobile withearphones etc) and packing them; ii) sorting and allocating packages as perthe delivery location.

Most Indian companies have invested in automation of the second stage:sorting. At DTDC’s Delhi hub, a parcel takes half an hour before it’s readyfor delivery, down from two hours when it used to be done manually.

GreyOrange is now in talks to sell a sorter which can do 7,200 packages anhour, Vadera said.

Look on This......The damage to the road and infrastructure duesea erosion at Kovalam fishing harbour inKancheepuram district on May 14, 2015.

Those along the Kovalam coast are worried of their housesgetting washed away.

Sea erosion along a 500-metre stretch of the Kovalam shorehas prompted residents along the coast and environmentalactivists to make a joint appeal to State government agenciesto find a solution. While this is a regular phenomenon duringthe rainy season, residents were taken by surprise when theysaw the onslaught of the waves over the past 10 days.

Fishermen said that a concrete road connecting the mainthoroughfare with the coastal hamlet caved in and two lamp-posts were uprooted on Wednesday evening, leaving manycoastal areas without power. However, electricity lines were setright by Thursday afternoon, residents said.

R. Narayanan, a fifth-generation fisherman from Kovalam said,as the road caved in, they cordoned off one side of the road toprevent any untoward incident. Panic gripped residents livingnear the shore, as waves came far into the housing units and atemple nearby, which they thought might get washed away. Hesaid three children, who were playing under a lamp post, had anarrow escape when it crashed on Wednesday.

On Monday evening, the sea had turned rough and giant wavesbattered the coast destroying several boats, said S. Kalaivani,(86). She said the Kovalam fishermen community had over 2,000residents and they had been petitioning the department for severalyears to construct a sea wall.

“Numerous petitions submitted to the officials went unanswered. The sea was 500 metres away from our village even in 2011, butit has been steadily eating into our land. They are takingmeasures now and various officials have visited us, but therehas been no action,” she said.

Residents recalled that many projects formulated over the pastfew years had remained on paper. The Water ResourcesDepartment had even devised proposals to establish a geo-tubesea wall instead of concrete groynes. However, it was droppedowing to the cost factor and coastal zone regulations, they said.

However, an activist said that coastal regulation zone rules willnot be a problem. “Recently, the rules were changed in such amanner that permissions could be obtained at the State-levelitself. All it requires is coordination between environment, fisheries and WRD departments. If the government wishes, thepermission can be granted within a week,” he said.

Mahalingam, a fisherman, said that the government should ropein agencies like IIT-Madras and get the work done quickly.

“The government is helping Pulicat fishermen but does not seeminclined to help us. If they delay it any further, our hamlet willget washed away,” he said.

Science and Technology......‘Home-brewed morphine’ made possibleScientists have figured out how to brew morphine using thesame kit used to make beer at home.

They have genetically modified yeast to perform the complicatedchemistry needed to convert sugar to morphine.

The findings, published in Nature Chemical Biology, raisepromise for medicine but also concerns about “home-brewed”illegal drugs.

Experts have called for tight control of organisms geneticallymodified to produce narcotics.

Brewing badIf you brew beer at home, then you are relying on microscopicyeast that turns sugars into alcohol.

But by borrowing DNA from plants, scientists have beengenetically engineering yeasts that can perform each of the stepsneeded to convert sugar into morphine.

One stage of the process - the production of an intermediarychemical called reticuline - had been a stumbling block.

That has been solved by a team at the University of California,Berkeley, and the scientists say it should now be possible to putall the steps together and “brew” morphine.

Dr John Dueber, a bioengineer at the university, said: “What youreally want to do from a fermentation perspective is to be able tofeed the yeast glucose, which is a cheap sugar source, andhave the yeast do all the chemical steps required downstream tomake your target therapeutic drug.

“With our study, all the steps have been described, and it’s nowa matter of linking them together and scaling up the process.

“It’s not a trivial challenge, but it’s doable.”

High hopesMorphine plays a vital role in pain relief in many hospitals, but itrequires a poppy harvest to manufacture.Brewed morphine could, eventually, be easier to produce. Itcould also allow scientists to tweak each of the steps to developnew types of painkiller. The broad concept of using microscopic organisms to makedrugs is not new in medicine.Insulin for people with diabetes has been made in geneticallymodified bacteria for decades. But there are concerns these latest advances could allow a DIYdrug lord to brew illegal narcotics in their home.

‘Basic skills’“In principle, anyone with access to the yeast strain and basicskills in fermentation would be able to grow morphine producingyeast using a a home-brew kit for beer-making,” reads acomment piece in Nature journal. It calls for tight controls on such genetically modified yeasts.Prof Paul Freemont, one of the directors of the Centre forSynthetic Biology and Innovation at Imperial College London, said: “Making opioids that can be used in an illegal sensemakes this an important story.“It’s technically demanding to make these strains, but in thefuture who is to know?“That is why this is such an important time - how do we regulatethese strains?”

Difference between sun lotion andsunscreen? There is a huge range of different sun products available, including lotions, mousses, sprays, gels and creams. In general, they can use either organic or inorganic filters toabsorb or reflect Ultraviolet rays.

The terms ‘sun lotions’ and ‘sunscreens’ are usedinterchangeably to describe many of them.‘Suntan lotion’ is sometimes used to refer to substancesdesigned to accelerate tanning with little or no sun protectionfactor. Some people use the term ‘sunblock’ to refer to sunscreens thatreflect rather than absorb UV rays. But what’s more important than the name used is the product’sprotection qualities, which can be found on the label.

Cystic fibrosis drug offers hope to patientsA “groundbreaking” cystic fibrosis therapy could profoundlyimprove patients’ quality of life, say doctors.

Patients often die before their 40s as mucus clogs and damagestheir lungs and leaves them prone to infection.

A major trial on 1,108 patients, in the New England Journal ofMedicine, showed a combination of drugs could bypass thegenetic errors that cause the disease and may increase lifeexpectancy.

The Cystic Fibrosis Trust said it could “improve the lives of many”.

One in every 2,500 babies in the UK has cystic fibrosis.

Errors in sufferers’ DNA - inherited from their parents - damage themicroscopic machinery that controls salt and water levels in thelinings of the lungs.

The result is a thick mucus that inexorably damages the lungs.

Antibiotics help prevent infection and drugs can loosen the mucus, but nothing deals with the fundamental problem for most patients.

The combination of drugs - lumacaftor and ivacaftor - weredesigned to repair that microscopic machinery.

The trial showed that those patients given the cocktail for 24 weekshad better lung function.

Cystic fibrosis also affects the mucus lining in the gut so thedoctors were pleased to see the patients also gained weight in thetrial.

‘Fundamental treatment’

Prof Stuart Elborn, who led the European part of the trial fromQueen’s University Belfast, told the BBC News website: “This isvery exciting and it really demonstrates that we can correct thebasic defects in cystic fibrosis.

“This is likely to become a fundamental treatment for cysticfibrosis.

“Starting in children may prevent the disease process developing ifwe correct the basic defect early in life.

“Will this improve survival for people with cystic fibrosis? We wouldanticipate it would have a really good chance of doing that, but we

don’t know for sure yet.”

There are however, many types of error in the DNA that canculminate in cystic fibrosis.

This treatment combination should work on around half ofpatients, while one of the drugs on its own corrects a smallproportion of errors.

New treatments are still required for the remaining patients.

‘Groundbreaking’

Susanna McColley, professor of paediatrics at NorthwesternUniversity, said these were “groundbreaking findings” thatshowed the future of treating cystic fibrosis.

She told the BBC: “For subjects I’ve cared for, they felt better inways that are not necessarily measurable.

“One young woman said, and this is a direct quote, her CF ‘isnot a problem’.”

Janet Allen, the director of research at the Cystic Fibrosis Trustcharity, said: “These results open up a new front in the fightagainst cystic fibrosis and this combination therapy looks set tobe an important additional treatment option that could improvethe lives of many.

“As this leading edge of science continues to be explored andbetter understood, we are hopeful that a future of personalisedmedicines is increasingly within reach.”

The therapy is being examined by regulators around the world.

Arulmigu Kandaswamy Temple - History

The battle of Thiruporur was fought against “Thalayaya Asuran” inether or Air and connotes the vanquishing of “arrogance or pride”.Thiruporur as the very name suggests, is the venue of war (“Por” inTamil means war) and is situated between the 40 and 41 kilometerstones on the Thiruporur High Road (Old Mahabalipuram Road-OMR ) from Chennai.

Thiruporur is an ancient little hamlet nestled around the imposing“Arulmigu Kandaswamy Thirukoil”.

Over 450 years ago, the founding guru of Thiruporur AdhinamSrimad Chidambara Swamy who was an ardent worshipper of“Madurai Meenakshi Amman” had a vision of the Goddess biddinghim to build a temple for Lord Muruga at Thiruporur. This happenedwhen the savant challenged the Goddess that he would not eatuntil she graced him with her vision. Many days passed andChidambaraswamy was almost in a coma.

Suddenly he could hear the anklets of the Goddess Meenakshi and when he opened his eyes slightly, he got a magnificent glimpse ofthe divine feet.

The Goddess then raised the swamy to his feet and as her hands touched him, his skin turned golden. She told him that six earlierattempts to establish the temple had failed. Chidambaraswamy reached Thiruporur to find that it was a dense forest full of palm trees.

He could hardly make out where the attempts to build the temple had been made. When he had despaired of locating the site, LordMuruga himself appeared as a small boy and gave him the vision of the sanctum sanctorum. Thereafter, Chidambaraswamy unearthedthe Swayambu Moortis of Lord Muruga with his consorts and established the temple.

In those days, Thiruporur was one of the hamlets under the reign of a minor Muslim ruler. When the Muslim ruler’s daughter was afflictedwith a form of vertigo, his minister “the dubash” suggested that the ruler seek the blessings of the nearby Chidambaraswamy as allother efforts to cure his young daughter had proved unfruitful. The Muslim ruler accepted the suggestion and prostrated, along with hisdaughter before Shri Chidambaraswamy.

When Sri Chidambaraswamy applied the sacred ash to his daughter’s body, she was cured instantly.

Baba's Leelas (Miracles)Lighting lamps with waterLong before Sai Baba's fame spread, he was fond of burninglights in his Masjid and other Temples. But for the oil needed inthose little earthenware lights that he lit, he depended on thegenerosity of the grocers of Shirdi. He had made it a rule to lightearthenware lamps in the masjid every evening and he would callon the grocers for small donations. But there came a time whenthe grocers got tired of giving oil free to Sai Baba and one day theybluntly refused to oblige him, saying they had no fresh stocks.Without a word of protest Sai Baba returned to the masjid. Intothose earthenware lamps he poured water and lighted the wicks. The lamps continued to burn deep into the midnight. The mattercame to the notice of the grocers who now came to Sai Baba withprofuse apologies. Wouldn't Sai Baba kindly pardon them? SaiBaba pardoned them, but he warned them never to lie again. "Youcould have refused to give me the oil, but did you have to say thatyou didn't have fresh stocks?" he admonished them. But he hadmade his point.Premonition of burning fieldsOnce, harvesting in Shirdi had been completed and the foodgrainsof the entire village had been stored in a yard. The summer wason. The heat was intense as only those who have lived in Shirdiknow. One afternoon Sai Baba summoned Kondaji Sutar and said

to him: "Go, your field is on flrel" Frightened, Kondaji ran to hisfield and. frantically looked around for any sign of fire. Therewasn't any. He returned to the masjid and informed Sai Baba thathe had looked everywhere but had found no trace of fire and whydid Baba have to frighten him? Unfazed, Baba said : "You betterturn back and look again." Baba was right after all. Kondajinoticed that a sheaf of corn was indeed on fire and smoke wasbillowing from it. A strong wind was fanning the fire and word hadgone round to the villagers who now came running to the scene."Sai Baba," the people shouted "help us, help us put the fire out!"Thereupon, Sai Baba walked casually towards the yard, sprinkledsome water on a stack of sheaves and said: " There now! The firewill die down!" And so it happened.

Powerful PrayersKim and Ray were very close companions. They wereneighbours, studied together, completed their graduation andworked together. They planned to enjoy a vacation and took asea voyage to explore different places. Unfortunately, theirship wrecked in the middle of the ocean. While most of thetravellers were unable to secure their life, only Kim and Ray,who were able to swim, could save their life by reaching anisolated island. They were very happy and thanked god for saving them. However, the island looked like a deserted island with hardlyany trees, and poor atmosphere that no living organism couldsurvive. They have no option other than praying to god to savetheir lives.Kim and Ray sincerely prayed to god. Nothing happened evenafter a couple of days. They decided to split their ways intoopposite ends of the island and challenged themselves aboutwhose prayer would be powerful. Both divided their region in the deserted island and offeredtheir prayers to god.

Kim prayed god that he would need food to survive. Surpris-ingly, he got a pile of food, fruits and vegetables on the seashore. After two days, he requested for a beautiful girl as his wife, ashe was feeling very lonely in the island. In a few hours, a shipwrecked again in the island near Kim’s region, where only abeautiful girl was alive! He married the girl. After a few days, he requested for more food and shelter. Allprayers of Kim were addressed by God.

It was almost a month after the ship wreck and Kim decided tomove back to his hometown. He prayed god to send him a shipto take him home. Surprisingly, a ship came and took Kim andhis wife.Just before the ship was about to move, a voice appeared! ‘Are you going alone, leaving your companion of life here?’

Kim was surprised, ‘May I know who is this and whom you arereferring to? I have my wife with me!’

The voice said, ‘I’m the one whom you offered your prayers!,whom you requested to save your life, whom you requested foodand shelter and of course, a wife!’

Kim happily stood on his knees and said, ‘Thank you god!’

Then god said, ‘But why do you leave your companion here?’

Kim was confused again! Then god added, ‘Don’t get so excitedmy son. Your prayers are not answered and fulfilled by me. I wasonly fulfilling Ray’s prayers. He prayed only one thing to me! Hesaid ‘Please fulfil all the prayers of Kim and it is my only prayer toyou.’ Kim was in tears and rushed to the other side of the island. He realized that he did not even think about his best friend Rayand was happily enjoying life with all pleasures.

He could not find Ray there and asked god ‘Where he was?’

God replied, ‘I took him with me, the man with the golden heartshould be with me! But I will fulfil all your prayers as I promisedhim to do so!’

Kim was completely broken and realized that his friend’s prayerswere more powerful.
