The KEIL undercut anchor, for invisible attachment of thin panels, is manufactured from stainless steel. Its geometry, matched to the KEIL undercut hole, applies maximum loads to the panels in an optimum manner.

This geometry ensures stress-free attachment in all commonly used panel materials from 6 mm thick.

Depending on panel thickness or carrying capacity required, different insertion depths (hS ) are available. The KEIL undercut anchor is designed in such a way that it withstands a greater load than just the weight of the panel.

The KEIL undercut anchor offers major benefi ts due to the high installation integrity. The anchor is placed quickly, easily and safely at a controlled depth for all panel thicknesses in an optimum installation by using matching KEIL system components: anchor, panel bracket and KEIL locking screw with integral locking mechanism.

Only two parts (anchor sleeve and screw) are required for safe attachment.

The undercut holes on the back of the facade panels must be made using KEIL System tools under workshop conditions.

The KEIL System tools comprise the KEIL facade drill bit, the KEIL drill head and the undercutting and drilling machine (e.g. KEIL manual drill, KEIL bench drill or automatic drilling machine with KEIL drill head).

The undercut hole is produced in one step (cylindrical drilling [1] and undercutting [2]).

Correct installation of the undercut anchor is possible only if a precisely undercut hole exists [3].The hole geometry is regularly monitored with the KEIL gauge matching the insertion depth of the anchor. The hole depth is set by means of this gauge, and all major hole dimensions can be checked effi ciently with it.

The undercut anchor consists of an anchor sleeve and its hex screw.

Hole, anchor sleeve and screw length have to be matched to the hole depth required and to the panel bracket chosen. Only the use of matching components results in quick, simple and safe installation.

The anchor sleeve, which is compressed in the lower end, is placed in the hole with the specifi ed panel bracket [4].

The screw is screwed in while exerting slight pressure on the panel bracket (to fi x the anchor) [5]. The locking mechanism of the screw cuts into the panel bracket to secure it.

The panel bracket forms a rigid unit with the KEIL facade anchor for this type of installation.

The anchor sleeve is expanded to its original dimension by inserting the screw to a controlled depth, so that the sleeve sits snugly against the undercut section of the hole in the facade panel. After installation, the anchor sits stress-free in the undercut hole (i.e. the bracket can still be rotated with a certain amount of effort).

Correct functioning is only guaranteed if all components of the KEIL undercut facade system are used. Expansion of the anchor sleeve controlled by insertion depth requires precise matching of the screw length to the anchor and panel bracket by KEIL. Production of the undercut holes and installation should be carried out under workshop conditions. Workshop conditions in this sense can also be created on site. The dimensions of the undercut hole are to be monitored in accordance with the regulations in force. The standards, guidelines and relevant regulations applicable to design and use must be observed.

CAUTION:Before fi nal installation, it must be checked whether the screwed-in part is fl ush with the anchor sleeve at the front and whether the correct installation tool is being used, by means of a test assembly.

without support structureDrilling - Grouting - Insulating

The KEIL plug-in anchor and the KEIL fork anchor in conjunction with the KEIL undercut anchor make it possible to attach natural stone panels without a support structure.

The support bolts are attached to the panel back with the undercut anchor. The holes in the substrate to which the panels are fi tted are fi lled with a permissible mortar.

The threaded rods on the facade panel are fi tted into the fi lled holes. The facade panel is aligned and fi xed. After the correct setting time, depending on temperature, has passed, a safe, stress-free bond has been produced.

Plug-in anchor

Fork anchor

With/without insulation Subsequent replacement of individual panels possible High safety due to optimum load distribution with both systems

The KEIL plug-in anchor facilitates the tight axial connection of undercut anchor and threaded bolt. It is used where facade panels need not be removed again after fixing, e.g. to replace damaged panels, in precast reinforced concrete elements, for internal fi ttings.

The KEIL fork anchor facilitates the safe, detachable connection of natural stone facade panels and the substrate. It is used, for example, when the panel has to be removed again, for example to fi t insulation or to check the anchoring. Fork bolt and undercut anchor are not directly joined. The fork plate between them makes disassembly of the facade panel possible.

Drilling technologyAutomatic drilling machines

Undercutting Unit for automatic drilling machines

The KEIL undercutting unit for drilling machines is the optimum automated drill unit for drilling and undercutting. Almost all available drilling/milling machines can be retrofi tted with this. The undercutting unit uses diamond or carbide tipped facade drill bits, depending on which material is to be worked. For undercutting, the drill head is pneumatically defl ected after reaching the pre-selected drilling depth. If the diamond facade drill bit is used, water is applied through the centre of the spindle. The carriage of the machine supports the KEIL undercutting unit with frequency-controlled motor. Thus the motor speed can be selected for drilling with the carbide facade drill bit (approx. 1,500 rpm) or for drilling with the diamond facade drill bit (approx. 7,000 rpm).

Connection requirements

Type “P“ drill head data

At the heart of all KEIL drilling machines is the KEIL drill head.

The cylindrical hole and the undercut are quickly and precisely produced with this drill head together with the facade drill bit.

The drill head can also be attached to your existing automatic drilling or milling machine. (Fitting as per customer requirement).

Various mating conditions must be met to be able to fi t the KEIL P drill head with pneumatic defl ection to existing machines.

The spindle speed must be about 6,000-7,000 rpm for water-cooled drilling with the diamond facade drill bit and about 2,000 rpm for drilling with the carbide drill bit.The facade drill bit must be seated free from play and the spindle must be running faultlessly to guarantee precise undercuts and long life of the drill bit. Locking must be possible in the different feed directions.

When drilling with the diamond facade drill bit, the water is supplied through the drill spindle (water pressure > 4 bar). It is advantageous to use a water fi lter to avoid any water failure which could lead to the diamond plate detaching.

A circulating water supply with added cooling lubricant provides good corrosion protection and has a positive effect on the optimum life of the facade drill bit.The customer must: Screw in the drill head or insert it into the collet. Fit locking for drill head.

Depending on machine, control of the drill head can be mechanical or under program control. For mechanical control, a KEIL pneumatic unit is attached/installed which is controlled by a limit switch which starts the undercutting process.

Cylindrical hole: Switch on cooling water. (Always drill with water as a matter of principle.) If drilling is carried out without water, this can result in detaching of the diamond or increased wear of the sealing rings in the fl ushing head.) Switch on drilling machine. Drill to the required depth (to the depth stop set).

Undercutting: The drill is held at the depth stop and undercutting is carried out by actuating the drill head with compressed air (approx. 6 bar, depending on material). Depending on material, the undercut is completed in about 3-5 seconds. Once pressure is released, the drill head returns automatically into the starting position (cylindrical hole). Remove drill bit from hole.

Installation Instructions

Function

Drilling and Undercutting

Replacing undercutting diamond facade drill bit

Installation Steps

The drill head is fi rmly screwed into place. The brass bell [4] must be secured against rotation. Connect compressed air.

Push compression lock washer [1] in direction of arrow and turn by 90°. Pull off compression lock washer [1] and compression spring. Pull out both cross bolts [3]. Push brass bell [4] into position A-B. Take out facade drill bit. Also replace sealing ring [6], if required. A new facade drill bit is installed in the reverse order.

To produce undercut holes matching the undercut anchor being used, drilling is carried out with facade drill bit and drill head. The drill head makes it possible to produce the cylindrical hole and the undercut with one tool quickly and precisely in one step. The facade drill bit is defl ected with compressed air.

Maintenance information

After operation, clean drill head and carefully spray with corrosion protection agent (creep oil) from underneath. Only use fi ltered water, preferably with anti-corrosion agent.

KEIL provides a soffi t panel attachment for the installation of soffi t panels to main facade panels with the KEIL undercut anchor. This type of attachment has been developed from the point of view of precise and fast installation and particularly easy handling.

Attachement of soffi t panels

Place soffi t angle on the drilled facade panel. Insert anchor with screw and serrated washer through the slotted hole into the undercut hole and tighten. Alternatively install threaded pin and locking nut.

Installation of soffi t panels

Installation is quick, simple and safe as the system consists only of an aluminium soffi t angle and a serrated locking screw with undercut anchor.

The patented soffi t angle, designed for the most commonly used soffi t sizes, offers the greatest possible adjustment and preliminary fi xing in both directions.

Optimum load application into the facade panel is ensured as the faces of the undercut anchor provide contact over the whole area. The high support forces resulting from this have been confi rmed repeatedly in tests by different research and testing institutes.

The high installation safety is also shown by the fact that the undercut anchor never pushes through to the front of the panel. Thus, even thin facade panels are attached safely and with a high load strength.

You can also use the KEIL KSDV manual drill with vacuum foot to drill the appropriate undercut holes. With a cost-effective add-on, this machine becomes a stationary drilling machine with roller table for soffi t panels.

Page 14: Keil Undercut Anchors

General building approval provides the legal basis.

Open and closed joints are possible.

Structural proof available for different soffi t panels and main panels with regard to length, width and thickness.

Highest safety due to mechanical attachment in undercut hole.

Simple and fast installation independent of the weather.

Even friable materials (e.g. sandstone) or for extremely large and heavy soffi t panels, KEIL offers undercut anchors with the larger diameters and insertion depths required. The increased load application area provides even higher breakage loads.

Thus large soffi t panels, too, are attached with a high safety factor.

Drilling and undercutting is carried out with the existing, proven KEIL drilling technology and the machines based on it.
